Every single time I hear that solo, it gives me what I can only describe as a *BRAIN-GASM!*
The subtitle says it ALL - "An exercise in self-indulgence."

This is one of my favorite videos of them performing. They're just so relaxed and having so much fun. Alex's main guitar solo is one of the most beautiful solos most "rock fans" have never heard. Also often overlooked are little details like during Alex's solo, Geddy is playing a keyboard part, but also playing bass drone notes on his Taurus pedals which add so much texture.

    • @Critical_Thinker858

Agreed, and Alex really cut loose and his goofy "Lerxst" personality came out with the Monsters! section where the camera even catches him acting out the part of Frankenstein or the Mummy, with they way he's walking around as he plays. I also love how they roll it back to just the core notes and drop the volume to almost nothing in the 30's jive reprise section, based on, the cartoon song entitled “Powerhouse” by Raymond Scott, right before the big finish. So fun! Wish I could have been there for that show.
For the record, here is the song broken down into sections from Wikipedia:
      I: Buenos Nochas, Mein Froinds! - (0:00)
II: To sleep, perchance to dream... - (0:27)
      III: Strangiato theme - (2:00)
      IV: A Lerxst in Wonderland - (3:16)
      V: Monsters! - (5:49)
VI: The Ghost of the Aragon - (6:10)
VII: Danforth and Pape - (6:45)
VIII: The Waltz of the Shreves - (7:26)
IX: Never turn your back on a Monster! - (7:52)
      X: Monsters! (Reprise) - (8:03)
XI: Strangiato theme (Reprise) - (8:17)
      XII: A Farewell to Things - (9:20)

The carnival music at the beginning was them having fun. If you listen to the studio version Alex is shredding on an acoustic guitar. On the official music video for this song he is shredding on an electronic guitar.
At the beginning the music is slowly getting louder , the layers representing Alex falling asleep. The ending is abrupt as that is Alex waking up.
Alex would have some pretty wild dreams on the road. In Geddy's book he described how Alex had a dream where he was driving an ocean liner down Yonge Street LOL ( Yonge street is a main street in Toronto)
My next song suggestion is Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour.
Also if you want to see how funny and down to earth guys these guys are please react to Dinner with Rush.
    Cheers 🇨🇦

Yeah, I much prefer the studio version or official video. The opening guitar riff and the beautifully slow buildup are cut out here in favor of the carnival. No doubt it was awesome in concert, but the studio version is so much better, sorry live fans.

The reason you see so many in the crowd air drumming in time with Neil is because Neil's goal was to match his drumming from the album, he stated his drumming on Tom Sawyer was his most difficult to repeat night after night.

As previously mentioned La Villa Strangiato was based on a series of nightmares that Alex had, and in their performances in Rio and Frankfurt, the Strangiato Theme Reprise would be preceded by a comedic rant from Alex, which someone recently compared to a person babbling while dreaming. If you'd like to see another amazing instrumental performance, including a killer bass and more amazing drum work from Neil, I'd like to recommend Leave That Thing Alone/The Rhythm Method Drum Solo from their 1997 Toronto show. Have a great evening, and Rush on!

The cartoon parts (from the song "Powerhouse," as someone has already noted) weren't intentionally lifted by Alex and Geddy, but they were eventually notified by the rights holder of what was clearly an unauthorized "use" of the main riff from Powerhouse. They had their lawyers look into it, who determined that the copyright for Powerhouse had expired and, as such, Rush wasn't obligated to make any payment. Nevertheless, Rush did make what was styled as a "one time penance payment" to the widow of the song's composer, Raymond Scott, anyway.
Just another indication of how "nice " (i.e. ethical) these three Canadians are (were)!

The "cartoon" portion is the jazzy piece about 2/3 of the way through. It is taken from the jazz song "Powerhouse", which has been used in a number of Looney Tunes cartoons as background music. As a previous commenter already stated, the intro here was the guys just being goofy, but it does replace Alex's wonderful classical guitar intro. The "official" music video is a live, electric version which I don't like as much. There is a UA-cam video that has the studio version that flashes the part names as they change. I highly recommend that, if only as a comparison to this version.

They wanted the album version to be a live performance, but after many attempts they ended up splicing together three sections. When they returned to Canada to mix the album they recorded music videos (this was several years before MTV hit the air) for several songs from Hemispheres at an empty Massey Hall, where they frequently performed. Neil absolutely hated doing 'mime' videos to the album version, he wanterd the video of them actually playing. They captured this video in ONE take. While it's slightly different than the album it's worth seeing them in their mid 20's kill this masterpiece.

So, Ace, they changed it up a little live. That 1st part is actually them goofing a bit, playing it polka style 😂 before entering the song proper. You'll have to check out the studio version to hear the difference. The monster theme is from Bugs Bunny cartoons when the big orange monster would chase him (if I remember correctly, it's been a while). This song is so complicated that at the time of recording, they had to put it together in three parts because they couldn't get it recording in one take. The is possibly the greatest instrumental rock composition ever recorded and I highly suggest that you check it out on your own. This is a song idea from Alex who said he had a nightmare and wanted to put it to music 🎶 🤘👏

That polka intro was just the boys having fun, at the start of the concert they played a video call the history of Rash featuring a polka band so it's sort of a nod to that. This was the first of two encores in Cleveland, the other being Working Man which is also an awesome performance if you haven't already reacted to it. This was not all 12 parts as the beginning is missing the original solo acoustic.
The song is based on a series of Nightmares that Alex Lifeson was having. If you listen to the original, it takes you through the full process of falling asleep, hoping to have good dreams, but then the Nightmares begin. The sudden and abrupt end to the song had always reminded me of that moment you suddenly wake up from a nightmare in a daze for about 10 seconds before you gain your bearings. It's that... what the heck... oh, it was just a nightmare moment.
The reason why monsters sound familiar is that it is similar to Raymond Scott’s “Powerhouse”. It is a tume that was used in many cartoons starting back in the 1940s, including Ren & Stimpy and the Simpsons. Rush said they were unaware that they had used it as it was just something they created without knowing where it came from. After, it was pointed out to them, they felt it was only right to pay the original author for the unintentional use, so they settled it without any demand.

    • @AceofBadeReacts
      @AceofBadeReacts  2 місяці тому

Oh wow. Yeah it sounds like I missed out on some context. Yeah that's what it was. I just went back and listened to Powerhouse. Core memory unlocked. And what Rush did by paying for unintended use is exactly why they are great dudes.
