Could not agree more . In Singapore where the bulk of the armed forces are made up of civilians reservist who had did their 2 years full time service. Sometime shit gets out of hand when they are too bored in their in camp training (2-3 weeks a year).

Because bored professional soldiers are somewhat predictable, and they think in somewhat predictable ways due to common training and experiences.
Now with part time soldiers, you get the known factors of military training and mindset, but you also get the completely unknown factors of whatever each soldier do for a living and hobbies when they are not in uniform.
For example, a militia colleague had volounteered to the Opfor for the exercise of another unit, he had arranged with the exercise supervisor and his civilian boss to go to the exercise in his civilian work clothes as an electrician, driving the electrical service company minivan...
He just drove up to the guard checkpoint of the A-side field camp, claimed that he had been contracted to do some service work on the lamp posts for the lit running track that happened to go through the camp and was allowed entry without much challenge.
Once incide, he drove around to the various fuse boxes where the A-side camp had also hooked up their power supply and placed a fist sized bar of modelling clay with some wires sticking out and a note labeled 'bomb' in each fuse box while also mapping the camp before waving goodbye to the guards at the checkpoint and driving off home, change to his uniform and return to the Opfor camp and the exercise supervisor with his report.
Noting that the evening report from the A-side didn't contain anything about any electrical works or discovered sabotage attempts, the exercise supervisor proptly shut off the main power to the 'serviced' fuse boxes at 2am the following morning XD

By the time he left Arsenalen I'm sure the Chieftain thought the Swedish military must be a bunch of thieving magpies, taking everything shiny they find in a combat zone!
Hillbilly armor? in '91, we stuck flak vests in the doors between the canvas and the diagonal metal bar that was part of the door frame.
At least you could do that. The unit I was with, being a Wing unit, only had the soft skinned Humvees, I don't think that flak vests would have helped much with those. It's a good thing I got out before 9/11 happened and didn't have to worry about that. Then again, our job didn't normally involve us going out too far with our advanced units behind the main front line units but ahead of the rear units and I'm not sure if they would have had us doing patrols in the cities & viallges either.

Yes, the M998 (or M1038, with a front winch) was a very good off-road vehicle. It was reasonably comfortable, fast, quiet, and could go almost anywhere a Gamma Goat (M561, FTW!) could go.

That's right, almost. No bilge pumps on a HMMWV.
I once had the opportunity to drive one of those things. It was a long(ish), straight road in Iraq, on Basrah airport. Quiet, not a soul on said road. This was one of the basic ones, mind you, not the all singing & dancing ones with remote weapon station, armour, etc etc.
I decided I'd try a 0-60. I gave up when it finally got to 30. Or rather, I ran out of road after about a mile. It only just managed 30. Had to have been the slowest vehicle I have ever driven.
I remember marvelling at just how cavernous the inside of that thing felt. Hearing it described as small just boggles my mind.
Now the inside of the fancy ones with all the gadgets? Now that's cramped!
I used to drive Humvees fairly often when I was in the Corps and I can attest to how slow those things were on the road. It was always a pain whenever we did road marches on the freeway because I had to practically floor just to hit 50; luckily this was back when the speed limit was still 55 so we weren't that much slower than the speed limit. But what I really hated was making lane changes in them because even though we had the soft top versions with the vinyl "window" in the back , they were always kind of frosted and there was no rear view mirror anyway. And forget about looking at the passenger side mirror, it was so wide across it was near impossible to see anything in it. I guess that's why we always had an A, or assistant, driver in them whenever we went on the freeway, I'd always have to ask them if it was clear before making a lane change to the right.
You might not be able to use a HMMWV on US streets but I have recenly seen a stretched one (Limmo style) here in the UK. I can only imagine it is used for military weddings.
I think they are street legal if you wear a PT belt while driving!
Oh yes, the MP's definitely needed those armoured HMMWV's more than the frontline guys.

The hmmwv is much like the BDU uniform dreamed to do everything good at nothing, the hummer did have awesome off road capabilities once armor packages began to be installed those advantages were negated. The BDU was a marvel of military development a uniform that was hot and uncomfortable in warm weather yet of no insulative value what so ever in winter
It's more a case of a piece of equipment being thrust into a role it was never designed for. Lest we forget, the Humvee was fielded in the cold war as a way to ferry troops and equipment around behind the front lines. Of course with two uniformed armies smashing into each other, it's pretty clear where the fighting is and isn't, so by and large you design a capable reliable offroader to putz around the German countryside with.
And as the Chieftain pointed out, the Humvee was totally fine, if not excellent in that role. What it wasn't excellent at was fighting a counterinsurgency, where literally every road could be mined, people could shoot at you at any moment, and the threat was ever-present. All the armor kits and whatnot was just lipstick on a pig, it wasn't until you had purpose-built vehicles for troop transport in an asymmetric environment that lives started being saved.
A bit too much of a square peg into a round hole if you catch my drift.

Personally, I think the best equipment for armored recon vehicles is wheeled armored cars like the LAV used by the Marine Corps.
A LAV would be better than a humvee but not by much. You're still putting people in a vehicle that's still easily killed by most anti tank weapons. I think you might be better off with a armed drone(s).
@@readhistory2023 well yes but the job or armoured recon is generally not to get stuck in combat with anything that can kill them back, just disengage and report to the main force
that and the introduction of active protection systems means that even a surprise attack with RPG or ATGM will be unlikely to hurt the vehicles
also drones usually fly quite high and may miss something that a ground recon unit will spot, and hellfires are a bit costly to kill a couple hajjis with AKs
Max, depends a bit. Recon may be to not get caught in combat, but US Cavalry has more of a job than just recon. It also has counter-recon at the very minimum, and can undertake much more combat-intensive missions.
@@readhistory2023 The main job, as I understand it, of the LAV wasn't so much to do recon themselves but to carry troops out to a point and have them do the recon. The LAV would then come back and pick the scouts up and bring them back to report to HQ. Although, I'm sure that, when feasible, the LAV didn't use their dismounts and did the scouting themselves.

Couldn’t you theoretically just buy a 998 frame then drop on an 1151 everything on top of it but have it registered as a 998 but since the 998 was made before there were mandatory airbags you would be fine. Kinda like how people would put a nascar on top of some 60 something Monte Carlo frame they found in the junk yard and have it registered that way. Hell with this you can even swap in a new turbo diesel V8 and an Alison transmission so you’re not stuck with an anemic power train on your Frankenstein hmmvw.
There is a company that sells kits to turn them into street legal vehicles. I think it costs like 5 - 7 thousand.

Iv always felt the driver safety argument is bullshit. If ou choose to drive around in the vehicle then you are also taking responsibility for what may happen to you in a wreck by that choice. If you may endanger other drivers thats a different issue but your own personal safety should not be the responsibility of the government. If you do something stupid and get killed thats on you and only you, both the decision and consequences.

The Humvee was NOT intended to be used in the role it was thrown into in Iraq. It was intended to be employed as a flank security vehicle for advancing mechanized units in a conventional battlefield, not as an internal security vehicle in an unconventional warfare battlefield.
@@MrDgwphotos so its overkill in what it was intended to do (i.e too big of a size etc) but under-equipped in what it ended up doing?
It was far better than the CUCVs (Chevy Blazers or Silverados, depending on the exact model) and M151 jeeps it replaced in the '80s. The off-road performance was excellent and it carried far more cargo.
@@MrDgwphotos Only some versions were intended for a combat role, such as the TOW missile carriers or Avenger AA carriers. The vast majority of Hummers were simple unarmored cargo vehicles. Trucks.
