In 1978 basic training was 18 weeks. 6 months after signing up I was patrolling the Streets of West Belfast , happy days.
6 months after training?
2 weeks after training we was doing the Grand Prix
The tash suits you. Has an authentic British army feel about it.
Haha thanks🤙
Have loved this series and this was a great one-stop for a lot of questions. It’d be nice to hear from some of the training staff and officers about what they think helps newcomers the most and even to hear from the staff going into phase 2 in various roles about what were the most important bits to focus on to excel in chosen roles, or what are common stumbling points and fixes for those going through phase 1.
Cheers Chris! Really good points, definitely will be putting out a couple of videos from a training staff point of view soon 👌
Our daughter is at Pirbright right now. So proud, but as a mum I’m constantly fretting. She is LOVING it.
What does fretting mean? Sorry I’m American lol
@@quangos9455 It means worrying
Basic training at catterick was awesome! Memories and friends for a life time!!!!
Oh hell I remember that casualty stretcher experience during training my arse was hanging out, to this day I don’t know how I completed it. 30 years ago, just where has the time gone but would I do it again of course I would joining up was probably one of the best things I’d ever done.
Anyone reading this and are considering a career with the best do it and stick at it and when your in training and finding things tough, dig in and don’t give up just keep saying to yourself things get easier as I progress and that tomorrow is another day make a mark on your calendar at your halfway point of training and work to that then it’s countdown to pass out parade. Good luck all and enjoy your new chosen careers.
Some things you never forget! Agree with your comment 100%, great advice
i love how my time in the acf has made it so i understand and have done all what is shown in this video. i am currently working towards my gcses and want to get a bursary toward a medical role in the army
Miss being in training can’t wait to get back at it 💪 GOOD LUCK KINGS 6 💪

Got bravo training with the reserves in January, then hoping for the full time regular transfer later on in the year!
Stab
How does the transfer work? I'm going through reserves training now and hoping to transfer to regs at some point. Testing the water with the reserves so my family can get a feel for what it's like. Is additional training needed when transferring?
Enjoyed the whole series lots, great production! Sandhurst to Platoon Commander next? Would be really interested to hear about the Officer pathway and your path to Plt Cdr?
Thanks! I agree, I think that series would be great. Definitely a good idea for a video on it, a lot of others have asked also. Need to get round to it 👌
My grandfather was a founding member of the SBS. He knew Ian Sterling and Paddy Maine and others who were the original members of of Britain’s Special Forces. He was originally in the Long Range Patrol Group in North Africa in WWII. He went on to become a Major, in the SBS and was awarded the Military Cross and Bar. (Which means he won it twice). The Military Cross is one down from the Victoria Cross. He was mentioned in Dispatches and is mentioned in every book I’ve read about the SBS. In some books he’s referred to as Captain Duncan because he wasn’t promoted until towards the end of the war. His name was George Duncan.
Well this is a total lie. It's the lrdpg. Go back and read the book you are copying from
I can't wait till I'm old enough to join that's all I want to do with my life.

good luck from england!
in the 1980s we never had these different phases in basic training, as we did 14 weeks in the RA at Woolwich and after pass out we had 2 weeks summer hols as i passed out at the start of the summer break, then it was off to my regiment where i learned how to fire the rapier missiles as at the time i was in 22 air defence, but the kit the recruits have today in their basic training is a lot better to what we had, and the weapons today compared to our SLRs
I loved the SLR (L1A1). I was in the REME during the mid to late 80's
Great video kind of the perfect thing i was looking for starting basic in January and looking for every bit of help and advice i can find 👌
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Good luck in Jan
me too mate where are you going???
Good video mate. It's interesting to see how another military works
Thanks man 👌
love the series but, quick tip from a sound engineer, try turning the gain down on the audio for the intro as the high volume is clipping (distorting) quite badly. otherwise though great video series
Thank you!! I’ll try it, the problem seems to be when the video is uploaded to UA-cam. On the original clip it is really good quality so not sure why it hasn’t worked - will try that though!
I came out on 1990 (12 years infantry). UK accommodation was absolutely appalling. During training room inspections were harder than anything physical. Contents of your locker including No.2 dress and ammo boots thrown out of the window. Don’t know what that achieved.
But once at the regiment. The proper job began.
Brings back memories. I did my training in pirbright
i did mine in woolwich

Bula, just wondering when will the next intake take place for Basic Recruitment.
Absolutely loved it, after doing basic it goes downhill hill and field army crap.
I was in the British military for 5 and half years before I left due to health reasons but one thing I can say is the training is brutal and not for the average person. It’s mostly a mental warfare but never the less if you are as determined you would get through it.
Brutal for those that dont train before hand 🤷♂️ personally i found it easy
Its only brutal for the weak minded
I remember my Infantry faze 1, at Glencourse, Scotland. Then faze 2, ITB Strensal.
Then Battalion, then retrained in the Signal Regimant.
There was a massive difference in the way I was treated in the Signal Corp, to the Infantry. Didn't have to pick up rubbish, accommodation was better etc...I learnt to speak and write another language. I gained a fully qualified Law Degree. My HGV Licence. Rank! Knowledge! Garrila Warfare Skills learnt in Bosnia.
The Doors were open in the Sigs, to progress in achieving your Green Lid, Maroon Berry and Sandy Berry in SF.
It was a culture shock for me to hear people speaking in a different accent in Scotland, as I had never been out of my own Town before.. it was a new way of life and a harsh reality in learning a Soldier's Foundation, to adapt and overcome any situation. They even take you further, if you Volunteer for further development , to...shall we say, reprogram your Mind with counter Beliefs etc...to make you a better killing machine, as that is what a Soldier is trained to do foremost! I've been all over Europe and Africa. Seeing other Cultures. Placing Weapon Stashes in East Germany
Establishing and evaluating "Rat Lines" in the Cold War. I've seen the Old and Bold, the difference between real Life and fictional Films.
In SF, not saying I was, but the whole Picture of the Theatre Of War and how you can achieve more success as a small team, than you would in Battalion Strength. The best Weapon System you have on the Battle Field, is your Mind! With Surveillance, comes Knowledge.
Over all, I wouldn't change my Military Career. It gave me a better, more productive Life in comparison to the dule, lonely Life I was leading...what did observe, was that Lads who had no Family, no emotional attachment, excelled in the Military Environment. There was no point in quitting, as there was nothing to go back to. You have a Roof over your Head, Food, company and the adventure!
From an injured British War Veteran
Respect to you sir from a fellow former infantrymen. Stay safe
@@jimmy2494 Thanks Brother!
Respect back to you Jimmy! An Infantry Soldier is no mean Feat...
The Field Craft I learnt in the Infantry, certainly helped me later in the Sigs.
Stay Safe my Brother and may Good Tidings come your way!

Hi I was wondering if you could help me with finding information about joining the UK armed forces from a comenwelth country
Hi, here is a link to a section of information about the commonwealth, straight from the army's website.
apply.army.mod.uk/how-to-join/can-i-join/nationality
Really appreciate your channel thanks on much
Just a small point to correct your opening remarks : Phase One training at Catherick for the Combat Infantary Course (CIC) is nothing like Phase One training at Pilbright. Absolutely, nothing with in terms of the design, intensity, tactics to be used as a Soldier, fitness tests, longivity, number of exercises, content of the exercises, etc.
CIC is 6 solid months of hard training that will make most grown men cry - I mean, literally. I say it because I was there in 2005 for my training to join 1LI (now called The Rifles)
I rebatched and was asked to go back to Pilbright. My time at Pilbright, not to diminishe its merits or take anything away for dedicated men and women joining from civvy Street to Pilbright , nothing can compare it to CIC ;I found it very easy - thanks to prior hard 6 months training as an Infantary Soldier I gained at Catherick. It was tought at Catherick but thoroughly enjoyed and will do it again. Good luck everyone joining HM Armed Forces(Army), it is The Best decision you will ever make. I miss it dealy.
As I was looking to get into the intelligence corps or something technical. However, only thing stopping me is the combat type training so I want to know if I will have to do combat training at all?
One role I was looking at is “operator technical intelligence” and it says for phase one Winchester or pirbright if u know what any of them will contain could u please let me know, thanks
Many thanks for this vid, its very insightful!
Has training length been shortened in any way due to covid restrictions or is it still remaining the same?
I would assume it has stayed the same but incorporated covid regulations, like social distancing etc.
@@yesyesoyes72 Ah, cheers for the reply!

I'm X army and my training at crickhowel in South Wales which was six months, my son did his phase one in Pennycook at Glencoe Scotland after his phase one he then had to go to Catterick to do his second phase so why not complete all of the training in one place.

On your application you choose 3 regiments which you are interested in your preferred order. Then you make your final choice a few weeks into training.
You’re not guaranteed to get that regiment or your battalion either

You’ll do some PT sessions involving pull ups. Again, just get practicing them
Do the male and female recruits share accommodation if there isn’t many females to fill a separate female room at ITC?
Females will have their own room and ablutions
Does anyone know, when you go into the Gas chamber for the exposure to the gas, do you get exposed to the gas or do you keep your respirator on during your time inside the chamber, and if you get exposed to the gas, do you fully remove your respirator or partially remove it. Thank you.
What are the main tests now for phase 1?
That YMCA cop look is going well for you lad
How does phase one of paratrooper training differ from what these have gone through in phase one?
It’s the same, all basic is the same
They just do an extra session at the end. So basic will probs last about 2 sessions split up within 6 months, each session or phase being 3 months, paras have to do an extra phase resulting in 3, 9 months. As opposed to regular infantry and other branches that just do the 2. Some do just phase 1 I think

How do you get into your role/ the role of the Corporals training the new recruits at ATC Harrogate/ITC Catterick?
Or even Harrogate/Catterick permanent staff team
You are selected to be an instructor at a training establishment after serving with your unit. Typically, the corporals that are trusted to train recruits at ITC are among the best corporals in the Infantry

Brit troops are good but a long rifle with a long bayonet suited them better. As the brits love the bayonet in battle and with a long one you can get several enemies at once.

My ex-boyfriend was a British military (veteran) and he hurt me very, very badly. He never hit me, but God, it's true that these people are trained to hurt you psychologically as well. I tried my best to be there for him and help him with his alcohol problems, his nightmares and his many other problems. "You can't change him," my family told me, but I thought that if I gave him all my love I could change him. In the end it was true and I should have listened to my family much earlier because it would have saved me anxiety attacks and many, many tears and nightmares that still linger to this day. I hope to find a man who really loves me as I deserve. I don't want to think that all military men are this cruel, but many other women have had bad experiences in their relationships with military men. Why, if a woman gives you love and affection, why do you hurt her? I don't understand.
