The Bible talks very specifically about Joy vs Pleasure. George Lucas is correct on both accounts (again based on Biblical Principles, God speaks directly about how Pleasure is fleeting, and Joy is all about sustainability). You're a Legend George Lucas. Don't stop your great films!
its very deep/profound message. I enjoy so much listening to the path throughthout his career. This is so much better because he tells us what the beggining was like.
You can see that he knows a great deal about psychology just from watching Star wars. Anyone who understands psychiatry will enjoy star wars a lot. Especially the prequels, which are amazing.
Delia Smith on Desert Island Discs spoke about finding PEACE the other day. I believe seeking inner PEACE instead of pleasure is a good way to describe Lucas's point.

I've just re-watched the prequels with my 17 yo daughter and - being a fan of SW since I was 6 - it was a pure joy watching her watching the films and reacting. Somehow SW became a bonding time with my grumpy teenager, and I am grateful for this.
holy crap..that was... beautiful! I could hardly believe it was George Lucas talking. I mean despite everything the world knows him for and he's attributed to, there is a serious underlying side to him that you can just barely see there. A side he never shows. Not to go all shrink like here but probably things he's sensitively disturbed by.
Truly Inspirational!
Well... Hoped to hear an advice about cinematography, but instead heard another, and probably even more important. Thanks, George!
8thDay Cinematography, AKA: The film industry.
Long set days -months on productions Lifestyle is not for the timid.
Takes years/decades climbing IATSE / ASC accreditation.
"When you make something extremely popular, make sure it's the very last thing you ever make or you will have to live up to it every time." Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw (Paraphrased)
I understand why george sold, but the sequels really proved how different he was than the rest when it comes to filmmaking. His approach is imperfect, but iconic and timeless. His stories will live on when others will be lost to time. It is because he had something to say with his films. He had a purpose in what he did. It is really hard to find that these days in the films that come out.
He forgot his most important piece of advice. Don't sell your baby to Disney.
Blame the dumbasses that hate the PT.
Thanks Theory for brining me over to this video 👏🏼
I LOVE LISTENING TO HIM TALK.HE WILL ALWAYS BE A HERO TO ME.
"I didnt like school, I liked wood working and I loved cars and engines and working on them"
Woah, that's a little scarily relatable
After the Rise of Skywalker leaks I miss Lucas A LOT more.
Wish my parents had given me advice like this as a kid...
Thank you my friend! Ironically I followed his advice. I was always told to get a good job (office), doctor, lawyer, whatever, but my real passion is and will forever be entertainment: writing, directing, acting, painting, and so forth. I got fed up with all the pessimism and left, pursuing my own path and landed in Hollywood where I currently still reside. Never in a million years would've I thought I'd get here, but my ambition never ceased and the voice in my head kept on saying "go do it"
This man is very wise and a inspiration. Sad that Star Wars got destroyed though. We need you back George!
Star wars isn't destroyed, you can still watch the first 6 + the mandalorian, the book of boba fett and soon obi wan kenobi are amazing series.
@@oharryc Star Wars is dead buddy. We can look back and enjoy the original/prequels but after Disney it’s been garbage. The people running it have no idea how stories in SW work. Mando is overrated, BoBF is shit, and I have no hope in the Kenobi show esp with them just nostalgia baiting every character.
I just love these armchair critics talking about how the prequels should be "fixed". Talking about how Lucas SHOULD HAVE done his own movies. I mean, why are people so unhappy with themselves?
He just described the fundamental difference between the Jedi and the Sith.
What great advice, I always hated school and found that in real life you learn everyday something new from the jobs you do. My father didn't let us watch TV much he called it the idiot box, we had great imaginations and were good with our hands.
Nice to see this man receiving a resurgence in respect and love from fans and young people looking for inspiration.
I love how he compares endorphins spikes and lows perfectly to chasing dreams.. so perfect. thanks for making this. I best it really inspired many people that felt like you were speaking straight to them. Im thankful for all your work
this man is truly smart, and simple, while being extremely successful
True
Never listened to Lucas speak before and can definitely see some things in him that makes him the good director that he is.
Lol “good director”
None of the actors in his movies think he’s a good director. If you actually look at the behind the scenes stuff all he does is sit in a chair and drink coffee.
@@4477superman Coffee is good!
@@4477superman There is footage of him directing the staff. How can he do this while on a chair and drinking coffee ?
@@4477superman george lucas is an incredible director and storyteller.
In twenty years it will be cool to claim you always thought the prequels were great.
Get on the bandwagon before it's too late.
Prequels are crazy! Love em! This guy's a genius!
I mean, I personally love the prequels, but I do agree with people that as a film, they suck. And tbh, as much I love the prequels, I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of them.
Dude, I alwaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyys loved the prequels. I loved them before it was popular. I even loved them before they were made. That's how important I am!!!!
everyone loves the prequels now
They were a mixed bag from the very beginning. But good movies; in execution, acting; story/plot and visuals. The script was tacky; and some interactions didnt work out. But honestly...thats what I thought about the OT as well. :)
I never left that bandwagon. It's MY bandwagon. The world is catching up. Finally.
Lucas gives inspiring speech to the Roman _senate._
"It’s amazing now you can go to a store and watch any film". Now you can watch any film anytime in the comfort of your home crazy
this man is a national treasure and a genius
He was multi talented. Good at drawing, good at photography. An amateur race car driver and mechanic. All his talents seemed to coincide with making movies, except writing. He was always weak at writing. But he was one of the most talented editors.
The Bible talks very specifically about Joy vs Pleasure. George Lucas is correct on both accounts (again based on Biblical Principles, God speaks directly about how Pleasure is fleeting, and Joy is all about sustainability). Cheers Mr. Lucas for this outstanding post! You are truly an AMAZING individual!!!
I love George Lucas’ philosophy at the conclusion of this. Very profound. I am happy he shared this. It’s a side of him that has not been visible before but incredibly valuable wisdom. Thank you.
Truly inspirational.
Love him or hate him, he's out there doing his own thing.
This guy is a hero. He did everything becouse he was determined focused pasioned and persistnet.
Pleasure and joy -That is some observation , luckily I found that out at an early age , but really never understood it as Mr. Lucas explained so succinctly. Great human.💜
Great advice. Inspirational.
Fans give him such a hard time. This man is wise, talented, and kind I wish more star war fans will see that
Wow, what a speech! Joy is the key to everlasting happiness. Thank the stars for this man.
Great talk--pure George Lucas (no frills, but deep). Awesome message!
This, my friends, is the difference between Lucas era SW and Disney era SW.
It's kind of interesting how you can sort of Peace together the elements of the Star Wars story from his past interests like Anthropologie and psychology
Great vision from a great man. Created many memories
One of my heroes and favorite artists of all time. I’m thankful that there’s no shortage of speeches and interviews with him on UA-cam. What a wonderful person.
Makes proud to be a Lucas too.
Proud of you cousin....great work and advice.
He’d seen a few movies, mentions Bridge Over River Kwai, little did he know....
Alec guinesssssss
thank you George for star wars!!!!! you selling to disney made me appreciate your prequels like i never could have imagined!!!! boy do i miss you and wish you would come back to do more star wars!
Wow. That blew me away. Why am I so surprised he would be that eloquent, moving and inspiring? His imagination and creativity are limitless.
What an amazing human being. 👍
Took time off after making his original Star Wars trilogy to raise his adopted daughter, alone. By himself, as a single father. And he's donated more of the personal wealth he's ever earned than most people will earn in a lifetime.
He personifies the, "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility," concept.
he is one of those 299 IQ fellas that had omni-comprehension at at early age...
(Being born in 1997) I grew up with the star wars films, and being young when they all came out, i loved them. I didn't see any mistakes with them, and didn't criticise them because I know that no-one is perfect, and now that i'm older i can see one or two mistakes made by Lucas, but i don't mind that, as he , in my view, still a great filmmaker and i still accept his films, and don't beat him up about them. You're a Legend George Lucas. Don't stop your great films!
Legend, love him
It's so dense, every single image has so many things going on
He fell in love with the art of making movies, and then had it's children - Star Wars
*its
"Use the Force, Harry." - Gandalf
its very deep/profound message. I enjoy so much listening to the path throughthout his career. This is so much better because he tells us what the beggining was like.
You can see that he knows a great deal about psychology just from watching Star wars. Anyone who understands psychiatry will enjoy star wars a lot. Especially the prequels, which are amazing.
he is wonderful i gotta say, even im not a fan of star wars. but he earned his respect.
George Lucas having not seen movies until he was an adult makes the dialogue in starwars make a lot more sense
Delia Smith on Desert Island Discs spoke about finding PEACE the other day. I believe seeking inner PEACE instead of pleasure is a good way to describe Lucas's point.
The Star Wars prequels are the greatest masterpieces in the history of cinema.
Darth Batman not a joke
Darth Batman yes absolutely there are but not to him, he has an opinion, he thinks that way, and it's okay. Deal with it.
I agree
The story was great, the trilogy of Darth Vader’s Tragedy.
Hubert Cumberdale yes they are! along with 4-6. the six film saga is epic beyond what words can describe.
Love George Lucas's distinction between pleasure and joy, and thus happiness 8:50
I loved his vision from childhood to the last movie i saw of his creation in 2005 - a lot of great artists are not appreciated in their life time and that loosely seems applicable to George.
George Lucas was way above the curve and deserved the Oscar for STAR WARS . He made Hollywood look at filmmaking differently because they weren't changing along with people .
