Oh man, this video makes me cry. Jimmy had such courage. This song put a target on his back, & he still got up & sang about being gay. He made a difference in so many of our lives. Much love, Jimmy.
if there is one song that signifies what the 80's were about, it is this one. 1984 was the greatest year in the history of music collectively and this song to me was the best of that year. Additionally, coming out to the world at this time took massive balls. Such courage and integrity. Lastly, WTF is up with that crowd? I would have been screaming like a crazy teenage girl.
How the crowd did not realise such an excellant and effecting performance that it would become a standard watched by over half a million people decades later...
I know this town very well, since I, quite literally, spent my childhood there. Some people called it "Black Hoexter" for some reason back in the day...
This song brings back so many memories. I was born in '73. I came out in '91 and danced to this at a dive bar in Boulder, CO called The Yard. At the time I had a constant sort of anger and melancholy about who and what I was, but was excited to meet people that were also gay for the first time and not feel like a freak. It is a perfect song.....and I am baked. LOL.
Hello I am so sorry if this sounds weirds but you wrote such a nice and wonderful comment on here and like your comment. I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you I'd love to be friends.
It was inspired by the times, The 80's were horrible for gay people in UK (especially with Hiv virus spreading) The British press went in hard against gay people
Temazo ...con el sello de los 80...aún hoy lo canta con esa calidad y falsetes exquisitos..alegre,compasivo con un dejo melancólico..transmite emociones varias..
Oh my fricking God.. This song and especially Jimmy Somerville's voice gives my goose bumps /the chills ( in a VERY good way)... This song was/is fucking the bomb... And LIVE outdoors next to a river in Germany proves Bronski Beat could make music that sounded AMAZING ... One of the best 1980's groups...
I will say hell yes….it did take a lot of courage to sing this song back then. Courage that I never had for the longest time…worrying about what other people thought.
I have respect for people like this singer he is so great artist and so humble man! All the best for the singer with his fantastic voice and personality xxx
This song has stood the test of time. I heard Jimmy sing this live last year and it is still (sadly) relevant to so many. We have come so far, but there is still a long way to go.
In 1984 i was 10yrs old and didnt even know what a gay bloke was let alone know Jimmy was one, I just thought this was a great song and took it at face value.
I was just about one and a half years old at this time. Just fuck it, I still don't care if he's gay or not, nor do I care if anyone else is. It doesn't matter to me. But this song is hands down one of my all time favourites from the decade I was born in!
@@doci6139 yes, of course, to understand the message and the impact of this song it is important to know that he's gay and that this had a huge impact on his point of view.
Your comment is spot on. Yes the subject matter is important, yes his sexuality is relative and relevant to the lyrics. But we are also becoming far too focused on carving everything up for analysis and boxing everybody into categories. Some things - like a great beat, catchy melody and standout vocal - transcends everything else and can (and should) be enjoyed for what it is and not always what it means or represents. Ironically, if people stopped over analysing and incessantly differentiating themselves and each other, most of the issues that songs like this are about would simply disappear.
This song has always been in my heart.... Being gay is not all glitters and flowers.... There are people, who wish themselves, they were not born this way.... And there is a Society, that just want to crush you and make you disappear.... Having the strength and courage, to stand up strong for who you are, no matter what, is in any case the strongest example of a great human being.... With this song they really impressed me
WOW, the next best thing to being there. Really fun! In 1984 I was still in the US Army in Germany and worried about being outed. I've forgotten how courageous Bronski Beat was in singing about the gay experience. They were ahead of their time.
@@pokushai_bratok Up until 1994 US, French and British forces were in Germany. Up until 1989, in West Germany and Berlin. Look up recent history for why. The red caps in front of the stage look like British Royal Military Police. Russian forces were in East Germany.

The Communards, Bronski Beat (Jimmy Sommerville), the British Invasion of the 80's lives on! You have this kind of voice nowadays as a performer, bet ya, record companies will offer u millions. Good era of music!
how unusual they weren't permed and lipglossed and zippered like other 80s acts - but INCREDIBLE how they managed to make the song sound exactly studio quality!!! Impressive!
This may be one of the greatest live playing videos I have ever seen. In regards to the pain this guy felt well in school I was bullied for other reasons and never recovered. To this day I have extremely high anxiety and do not feel at all comfortable with people. I can't work due to this or even when I took a job like at a Subway that my ex-fiancee ran I could do prep work but could not come out and serve customers. The fear of being hurt is still there ....
Very sorry. You can get free counseling - you may have to go through some therapists to find one that clicks. I hope you do and I hope you live your beautiful life. Look outward not inward. Appreciate the things you see that are beautiful and meaningful, and look for things that make you smile. Choose that life.
I'm pretty sure the vocals are the only live element... I have heard the album version of this song thousands of times.. Not a big deal, still a nice performance, but not 100% live..
With this summer day river his music flows through my brain straight into my heart - another sip of wine and I'm ready to die to be back in 1984...I hope in heaven they have time machines I can use without the credit cards:)
Top song from a legendary band with Jimmy Sommerville. Memories from same period in DDR in colony in Insel Usedom near Wolgast in trassenheide !!😉😎🤗❤👍👍
this is fantastic...many thanks for putting it up. The guy on the keyboard to the right, Larry Cole is my step-uncle, small world. think wot you want, be who you are , be loving ,love this track !
Jimmy Summerville... What a voice. Awesome. And the conviction he radiates while singing, I get goosebumps.
Somerville
I thought exactly the same - fabulous unique voice
This music will never die . Love Bronski Beat
Bronski forever
Never 😊
Jimmy always singing in real time.No playback!!! Amazing song and great voice!!!!
Oh man, this video makes me cry. Jimmy had such courage. This song put a target on his back, & he still got up & sang about being gay. He made a difference in so many of our lives. Much love, Jimmy.
It's easier if you just don't give a f***.
im not gay but his voice and music wow
@@vovac8915 That's hard to do if you are having your head stamped on for being gay.
I think we were more civilized in 70s, 80s, than afterwards, when the economic system started getting worse and worse.
Even as straight tears allways wells up i my eyes. This was my generations Exodus Song Jimmy you made a difference.
I served in that army base from 1991 till 1992!! The guy in the front with his moustache was master sergeant by then! I was laughing seeing this!
How did you like my hometown?
he actually sing the song there :D
Lol! Bodyguarding for a gay band. Brilliant!
I thought it was the royal military police first off , I served as a ref cap in Germany . Brilliant footage
Amazing I thought the same bruvva! Who was that segeant? What a coincidence in thoughts 💭 cheers fella!
This is wonderful. Im not even gay and this song has always touched my heart.
Speaking your mind, I really love the keyboards.
Hear u I'm not gay but went to gay they can dress and can dance luv this 😅

I come back to this song so often as a backbone. Seeing how young and brave they were fills me with so much gratitude.
This song sung by Jimmy is so distinctive and pure class.
agree
I am 65 and the music of the 80s was some of the best to ever be released. Diversity it didn't matter to most of us straight or gay ❤❤❤
50 old woman here, and definitly ok with you,sad to say but the horizon was more opened

Way ahead of its time. I can respect the movement, but I think the main focus is on the music, and this is fantastic music.

i sell my soul to be there in that day

I wonder why mr. Usher is so interested in Bronski Beat...
I saw him live, in Chicago at a dive bar, back in the 90's. Right up front, touched my hand! It was beyond amazing!❤

This song and his performance is really remarkible.
I'd give up my last day on earth if I could
go back for just couple hours at any Saturday
night in the 80's. :((
Man I'd do anything to be there and dance to this masterpiece and they're all just standing there like fucking statues
Well, there are concerts and there are dance clubs - so where's the problem?
It's for sure a good dance track but it also has a message to listen to.
I 'd there dancing with you. Looks so........ Dont know... Without a soul
