Het Nederlandse televisieprogramma "Countdown" was van 1976 t/m 1993 “Europe’s Number 1 Rock Show” en werd uitgezonden bij Veronica. Later werd het programma ook uitgezonden in het buitenland en was het op z'n hoogtepunt in meer dan 20 landen op televisie te zien.
Gedurende deze 17 jaar muziekgeschiedenis zijn er opnames gemaakt met talloze internationale sterren, zoals Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, George Harrison, U2, The Police, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, Depeche Mode, New Order, Whitney Houston, Duran Duran, R.E.M., Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Cure, Run DMC, Cyndi Lauper, Iron Maiden, New Kids On The Block, LL Cool J.
Uiteraard kwamen Nederlandse top-acts als Doe Maar, Andre Hazes, Herman Brood, Frank Boeijen, Spargo, Golden Earring, Time Bandits, De Dijk, De Raggende Manne, Hans de Booij, Gerard Joling, Drukwerk ook langs voor een optreden in Bussum.
Countdown werd gepresenteerd door oa Lex Harding, Erik de Zwart, Adam Curry, Simone Walraven Wessel van Diepen, Jeroen van Inkel, Rob Stenders, Simone Angel en Jasper Faber.
Het Countdown archief is vrijwel helemaal compleet en sinds 2017 eigendom van het Amerikaanse Reelin’ In The Years Productions (David Peck - reelinintheyears.com/) en Double 2 Hilversum (Jan Douwe Kroeske - www.double2bv.nl). Het archief bestaat uit meer dan 3.000 analoge mastertapes die allemaal gedigitaliseerd en gearchiveerd zijn. This came out exactly the same time as I met my husband Gareth in 1986. We had 34 yrs together. I lost him in 2020 to cancer at 58 yrs old. This song takes me right back there in an instant- wish I could go back there. Love you Gar, always will. Miss you love. He didn't want to leave me this way............❤❤

Jimmy Sommerville has a great vocal range that slams energy into every song he performs. I keep replaying this!
Unfortunately the singing was playback, but however the instruments were not, those were live.
@@Phantasia.Official Sarah is live I am sure. You can hear extra vocals I believe Jimmy is miming but sarah is singing along and also slightly tipsy by the looks of it. I don't think she was to but you can hear the live vocal over the top once she sees the mic is on and she starts belting it. She is holding the mic much closer and clearly its picking her up still even though its turned down low.

It's not that his voice is so great -- it's his whole stage presence. He is as energized by the song as we were on the dance floor. Watching him dance & be so fully absorbed in the song, sweating to the beat just as we did. His blond drummer is sooo beautiful. The band & his voice & this song are a perfect match.

Absolutely. Sarah Jane always captivated me in both her physicality and her performance as a fabulous artist. This was a match made in heaven. We were spoilt as the youth of this day musically.
"Voice of the 80s" is a big statement, considering how many great voices there were then. Personally I don't agree but he's definitely up there.
@@richardikin good point ; arguably a better voice than say Andy Bell of Erasure, to compare male voices, (with an emphasis on the "argue"!) but how do you begin to compare either of them with someone like e.g. Alison Moyet?

This takes me back to my youth and I can listen to it time and time again. Happy music and vocals witrh no hatred or malice. What a shame that the music scene has changed so much in recent years where some artists (albeit a tiny minority) use their music to incite hatred and voilence.

The song is great, 86 was my first year of university. I can remember dancing to this song at the Turret - WLU's bar. Sarah is absolutely stunning -so beautiful and talented. If she had of showed up in Waterloo, I might have given up God and Country for that beautiful girl. LOL
A good version this , I also loved the two other versions from the 70s that were in the charts at the same time.

This is my music era, I was lucky enough to be 15 in 1980, although you don't tend to realise what you had until you look back later. The 80s were amazing - I'd love to go back. Although it wasn't perfect, of course, things were much freer and simpler then.
