Love the list! In regards to your question of the Robinson/Tanner connection, the Wikipedia page for The World is Not Enough has Tanner marked as Chief of Staff and Robinson listed as the Deputy Chief of Staff. Yes, it's Wikipedia so it can be taken with a grain of salt but it does offer something of an answer! Keep up the good work, sir!
Intresting idea for a ranking! I remember faintly you once stated in your GoldenEye review that Michael Kitchen was the best incarnation of Bill Tanner. But back then we were talking way before the release of Skyfall and SPECTRE of course! I completely agree with this list, and like your suprising but worthy inclusion of Charles Robinson on there!
What do you make of Tobias Menzies as Villiers in Casino Royale, another character that is basically Tanner (to the point where he is named after no4 on the list)? Got to be more worthy of mention than 5!
It's a bit of dream casting, but I'd love Paul Bettany to play Tanner. Although he'd also make a great Bond or Shadow Bond Villain, I think his screen persona fits as being an thorough thinking and considerate person, who we could definitely see as being someone Bond socialises with (maybe they went to Naval College together?).
....I actually did think that Salmon's character was an agent, especially during that simulation scene in Day Another Day. xD It's actually been so long since I've done a marathon that I only remembered Bill Tanner being in GoldenEye and the Daniel Craig films, forgot he appeared in more films. lol
It's that mixture of not believing, fascination ("see what you've done there") and "Oh shit", that expression is just perfect. He's one reason that movie is soooo good
I knew that tanner was a character in the Daniel Craig universe, had no idea he was in other films until I saw him in the Brosnan film - even then I hadn't known there were Tanners before until this video!
I've gotta be honest, despite being a Bond fan for several years, having read all the Fleming books, and seeing all the films, I think it was only around last year I ever found out that Tanner wasn't just the Rory Kinnear in the Craig films. I think when you already have 3 good MI6 regulars, the boss, the secretary and the quartermaster, the Chief of Staff is always going to have a hard time sticking out.
1. Michael Kitchen 2. Everyone else. Michael Kitchen's Tanner is actually reminiscent of Fleming's character in that there is a warm friendship between himself and Bond. The problem with Kinnear's incarnation is that he's more of M's plaything and less of an ally to Bond.
Great video as always, Calvin! I was eager to find out if you would include Robinson, and you did! Hurrah! To be fair, I would put him just above Kinnear or maybe on the same level, I always got the impression that he was a good friend of Brosnan's Bond. The dialogue and emotion in the pre-title sequence of TND does the trick. About Kinnear, it seems a lot of Bond fans don't like him all that much. The MI6 Community boards are loaded with people saying he can't act.. Whatever, I think he's amazing and brings some lightness to the films, which is needed in QoS and SF, especially.
4:07 Is that James Bond producer Michael G. Wilson in the background working at the computer? I know he likes to make Hitchcockian cameos in all the Bond films he produced, but I also know he appears in GoldenEye as a Russian politician. Did he make two cameos in GoldenEye?
Apparently so. I probably would have included him [and included Jack Wade in the Felix Leiter video] even if he didn't make much impact to the extent they replaced him with Kinnear's Tanner for Quantum even thought it's set hours after Casino,
I recall reading somewhere that he was named after James as a tribute to the popular character actor, although the surname is pronounced wrong. It's "Villers" without the 'i.'
I remember Michael Kitchen most in his role as the King in To Play The King, the second of the Francis Urquhart House of Cards series. He was great in that, even if he can't overshadow the great Ian Richardson. Rory Kinnear is good no matter what he plays - just like his father.
A great analysis, making me feel justified in liking Kinnear's Tanner best. Kitchen will always be the ultimate Tanner in my mind though, perhaps because he combines different aspects of the character that other actors tended to specialize in (exposition - Goodliffe, stern - Villiers, respectful - Kinnear) but the latest Tanner is definitely a good fit for the role, perhaps less cynical than i would imagine the character but the way he works with Bond and M is perfect.
I like the Michael Kitchen incarnation the best, for all the reasons that you stated. Not a fan of Rory Kinnear in the role, although I can hardly remember him, probably as I'm not much of a fan of Daniel Craig's Bond films after Casino Royale. I've got a soft spot for the For Your Eyes Only guy as he plays a pain in the ass bureaucrat well. Salmon is good, although I agree that he has more of an air of an agent about him. He even has the "dangerous eyes" of Connery. They should have capitalized on that for a bit of Alec Trevelyan style interplay or even given him a backstory of someone who could have been a 00, but perhaps was injured or something. As it stands, he's good, but slightly out of place.
I'll be honest didn't know Michael Kitchen played Tanner! Thought he played someone else actually! I truly love him as an actor seriously, the amount of times I've seen Foyles War is ridicules 😂 Also Rory is just gorgeous as an actor and as a personality TRULY IS ONE OF THE BEST OF THIS MILLENNIUM! Mummy remembers his dad Roy (He played Veruca Salt's dad in Willy Wonka... if anyone needed to know) and every time we see Skyfall or Spectre she just says "Doesn't he look like his dad" and yes he does 😁❤ I could listen to him for hours quoting Shakespeare, wouldn't get bored at all truly brilliant!
He's called Villiers and the part seems to have been created to replace both Moneypenny and Tanner as M's assistant but they brought Tanner back for Quantum [but not yet Moneypenny] instead. I would have probably included him on this list just for the opportunity to discuss the character if nothing else.
Have you seen Foyle’s War? Michael Kitchen is the main regular in that show. He plays a brilliant police investigator who investigates murders and other crimes during a time of war in 1940s southern England. An excellent blend of history and mystery.
Be interesting to see if these sort of lists get a re-do in the gap before Bond 26 given it's probably that most of the 'regulars' have now finished there runs. Good to see Robinson in here [like Jack Wade with Felix Lieter, fills the slot despite a different character name] though I'd probably have thrown in Villiers [played by Tobias Menzies and named after the Tanner actor in FYEO] from Casino Royale who fills that part, though they replaced him with Tanner next film and no one really noticed [though maybe people didn't notice Kinnear in Quantum as I read many articles at the time making out Skyfall was his debut]. Kinnear's version of the character suffers somewhat as Q and especially Moneypenny are more 'closest thing to a friend' Bond has than him, to the point he was very much a background character in NTTD.
Maybe I'm just a wee bit biased because I love Michael Kitchen (I can't imagine what Foyle's War would've been like without him) but I really wish he'd had more screen time and even got to be in the field. He's my personal favorite Bill Tanner tied with Rory Kinnear.
I sometimes forget Kinnear's actual name and mistakingly call him Bill Tanner at times because of how his portrayal of Bill Tanner has burnt into my brains since 2013.
Well seeing how the Craig era ended with No Time to Die, looks like the series may get a reboot again. Unless they keep Kinnear (and other MI6 regulars) on like they did before with Judi Dench as M, Tanner may either be recast again or not featured at all.
I'd expect they'll all be recast except maybe 1. Tanner suffered a bit in the later Craig movies as his Bond seemed far closer to Moneypenny and Q than him so I wouldn't be surprised if the character gets left in the reboot.
Rory Kinnear, Michael Kitchen, Colin Salmon, James Villiers. Rory Kinnear has a great range from comedy Quacks, bloody hilarious, Shakespeare Hamlet and drama Black Mirror, Lord Lucan.
Hi Calvin your videos are very good. You are my favorite youtuber and I have subscribed. I think you should do videos more videos, I realize it takes a long time to make them but still, I think you should make them more often
During the Brosnan era, here is how I understand who had what role between Tanner (Michael Kitchen) and Charles Robinson (Colin Salmon). Robinson is credited as Chief of Staff in "Tomorrow Never Dies", which is originally Tanner's role. In the novelisations, Tanner is given the role of Senoir Analyst in "Goldeneye" and features as Chief of Staff in "Tomorrow Never Dies", with no mentioning of Robinson. I suppose that since Michael Kitchen was unavailable, Tanner's role might have been temporarily replaced by Robinson. "The World Is Not Enough"'s novelisation suggest's Tanner is Chief of Staff, and Robinson is the Top Analyst. This however is confusing, as this is the first time Robinson is mentioned in the films' novelisations. According to the films, it would make sense to say Charles Robinson is the Chief of Staff, and Bill Tanner is an advisor. According to the novelisations, it seems to be the opposite. I hope this was more of less clear, and that it helps to understand Tanner and Robinson's roles in the films.
I didn't mind James Villiers as Tanner, because from what I recall of Tanner in the John Gardner Bond novels and the Fleming short stories, he's usually the one who briefs Bond on the mission details, whereas M just give the broad mission objectives, which is completely different from the movies. However, Michael Kitchen is probably my favorite Bill Tanner. 1. Michael Kitchen 2. Colin Salmon (if we're counting him) 3. Rory Kinnear 4. James Villiers (definitely over Robert Brown's M)
Is that true? I don't think there's been any official announcements either way. Last I heard they were in talks to get Daniel Craig to come back for one more film, and I really think he can pull off one more. Spectre was good, but didn't feel like a good stopping point for Craig's Bond, it still feels like they have more stories they could tell. And if Craig *IS* leaving, I hope they're not going to reboot the series again. With Craig it was necessary, since Bond needed to be re-established after 9/11, much like how Goldeneye was kind of a soft reboot (new MI6 headquarters, new M, new MoneyPenny, the Cold War was over). The intent with "Casino Royale" was to reboot Bond in the 21st century, I don't see what would warrant rebooting the series now.
Tanner is an important character in the series because his job is most similar to Ian Fleming’s own job in Naval Intelligence. Thus Tanner’s perspective is in some ways, the author’s perspective.
I am rewatching the whole series right now and notice that my rankings have completely changed i feel like they do everytime it would be cool if u did another Ranking in which maybe some of your opinions have changed also include SPECTRE please
I didn’t even realise that most of the actors listed here were playing the same character. I figured they were all just “MI6 staff person of the moment”.
Your ranking was, in my opinion, perfect ! But even if I love Rory Kinnear's Bill Tanner, I hope he won't become M, or at least not now, as I really want to see Ralph Fiennes 's Mallory/M back for few movies.
First time I've ever heard of such a character, but now I'm wondering how that couldn't be the case. Maybe if the character appears more frequently, he'll leave a mark?
Well it looks to me as though "Bill Tanner" is not weapons trained, i.e. he's not a field agent. However, Colin Salmon's character WAS weapons trained, which means he was potentially a field agent. This could explain how the characters appeared together in the same film, since a field agent would be somewhat wasted in a Chief of Staff position (unless he/she was retired from serving for some reason). As for Colin Salmon's role in Tomorrow Never Dies, you'd have to ask the writers, but I assumed he was a field agent advising the new 'M' on how and why Bond and other double-O agents did their jobs, since she had previously been criticised in Goldeneye for being the "queen of numbers" and of knowing nothing about the spy business. It all makes sense, if one thinks hard enough. :)
There's something else I forgot to mention. In one of the Connery-era films, it is briefly mentioned on a tape recording (although perhaps as a joke) that Bond had spent some time abroad with 'M.' This might imply that the original M was a former field agent who had worked directly with Bond, hence why the two have an understanding and work so well together. [It might not be in the books at all, but I thought it interesting to bring up as a film theory.] The arrival of Judi Dench's 'M' would have broken down this prior connection and caused quite a stir, hence all the somewhat chaotic staff changes between Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough.
paul rawes I think it is from “From Russia With Love”. It was probably the tape recording of Bond’s questioning of Tatiana, which M played back in his office, only up to a point.
In The man with the golden gun, if you've actually read the book you'd know that in the beginning the Chief of Staff has a lot of lines and a big part but just not in the film.
@@AndrewChapman It was made just after Skyfall [to the extent Naomie Harris was only represented in stills]. Like other videos Calvin has taken down, I'd expect he'll bring it back bigger and better at some point [like his recent 'Bond Girls' video which was far superior to his long deleted earlier version].
I guess I don't share the love for Rory Kinnear that you do. The problem with all incarnations of Bill Tanner is that, as a bureaucratic guy who just delivers exposition, there's nothing to the character to make you even notice him. The only two movies where he actually left an impression were FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (because he's basically just being M) and GOLDENEYE (because he gives a great setup for Judi Dench's entrance). Aside from those two movies, you could have completely cut Tanner out of all the other movies, or replaced him with Any Random Guy, and not missed him at all.
So Calvin, wanted to pick your brains about something; an american friend of mine saw Skyfall only recently (shocker i know, i managed t convince him to start watching the series) and me being a huge Bond fan myself he asked me a strange question ... "If Bond's Scottish, then why does he say he's English?" i think he was taking about the word test scene when the examiner says "country?" and Bond responds with "England" but it also made me think of the scene in The Spy Who Loved Me .... "James, I need you ... So does England." I gave him my answer, but i'm curious about what you think of that: What would you have said? does Bond hate being Scottish or something? I'm curious to know what you think ... one Bond fan to another.

This was a surprise! Great video Calvin! By the way have you ever heard of JamesBondRadio? If not you really should check it out!!!!
agree completely with your ranking. How about a Felix Leiter best to worst? Or maybe you've done one already and I've missed it
First time I've ever heard of such a character, but now I'm wondering how that couldn't be the case. Maybe if the character appears more frequently, he'll leave a mark?
I like to think of Bill Tanner as the Inspector Lestrade from Sherlock Holmes of the 007 verse.
Kinnear is utterly brilliant. I didn't realise Tanner was in pre-Bronson/Craig movies till this video.
Built Anna?
Villiers in the 2006 Casino Royale was also kind of a Tanner clone
Has Calvin done a top 10 Bond gadgets?
Will you be re doing a Diamonds are forever review? And again, I'm loving your podcast :)
@@davidwho1011
Can you remember what film it was?
paul rawes I think it is from “From Russia With Love”. It was probably the tape recording of Bond’s questioning of Tatiana, which M played back in his office, only up to a point.
Thank-you my friend!
Calvin I would love it if you could bond actors to play bond worst to best
My ranking:
1) James Villiers
2) Michael Kitchen
3) Rory Kinnear
4) Michael Goodliffe
Not counting Colin Salmon, but I do like him as Robinson.
In The man with the golden gun, if you've actually read the book you'd know that in the beginning the Chief of Staff has a lot of lines and a big part but just not in the film.
Yeah, but it's not as if the film otherwise stressed itself about following the book in that case, so it's still a bit curious that they threw him in.
Could we have a ranking on the best moneypenny actors
Huh, I thought he did a Moneypenny ranking video once. Looks like it's been removed.
Kinneari is great...I just can't get that pig thing out of my mind
It's the same problem I have with David Cameron
Have you ranked the Bonds themselves?
Salmon wasnt Tanner he was Robinson.
Bond comics review?
So Calvin, wanted to pick your brains about something; an american friend of mine saw Skyfall only recently (shocker i know, i managed t convince him to start watching the series) and me being a huge Bond fan myself he asked me a strange question ... "If Bond's Scottish, then why does he say he's English?"
i think he was taking about the word test scene when the examiner says "country?" and Bond responds with "England" but it also made me think of the scene in The Spy Who Loved Me .... "James, I need you ... So does England."
I gave him my answer, but i'm curious about what you think of that: What would you have said? does Bond hate being Scottish or something? I'm curious to know what you think ... one Bond fan to another.
Great video!
Keeping it up, Calvin! Also, a frequently asked question, will you ever review Spectre?
Certainly! Just deciding whether to prioritise that or Diamonds Are Forever...
Rory Kinnear is the best Bill Tanner ever. I love this actor.
I like your videos. The audio quality needs improvement, You may wish to look into a lavaliere microphone.
Cool and great video
One thing you didn't mention about Rory Kinnear: his BLINDING HOTNESS.
Do Bond ranking pls.
Colin Salmon was great and he didn't even get cubed for once!
James Villiers owns them all. He actually had some character and style. The others are just there to fill in some lines.
I like the Tanner from FYEO--posh and condescending!
Freddie Gray: HMMMMMMMMmmmmmm!
Red Pill Intelligence "Well get cracking, 007!" 😂
@@cockshield Freddie's esp annoying in this one. Funny considering him and Bond were mates in Spy Who (Bond calls him Freddie). Maybe it was after Bond embarrassed him in front of his Bridge partner Drax?
@@alfredvalrie5541 "Why...don't......you.....use...the....Identograph". Talks to Bond like he's his Housemaster. They're all just jealous because Bond saves the world and shags gorgeous birds.
David James it’s totally a British class thing. they’re born into class and even though Bond is their superior in every way, they still get to look down on him.
