Hearing Isabella Scorupco just flat out say, "Bond girls have always been strong. I think it's a pathetic question from journalists," was fucking glorious.

She's one of my top Bond girls, largely because they don't put her in competition with Bond to make her look strong (which they felt obliged to do with Anya, Goodhead, Wai Lin, and even Nomi). She's just an expert in a completely different field who saves Bond's butt several times, and carries on with aplomb after the massacre of her colleagues. AND they had the nerve to keep her in frumpy office clothes for 2/3 of the film.

@@paulthomas3247 Love that you pointed out the "frumpy office clothes." There literally isn't a single scene where they sex her up. Not even when her and Bond are on the beach in Cuba, and she's in a swimsuit. She has got to be the least sexualized of any Bond girl ever, and easily one of the most competent! Thoroughly deserving of the top 3 placement!!

I'm pleased to see all the love for Kara in the comments. I think she's a wonderful Bond girl. I love Maryam D'Abo and I love the vulnerability of the character who is completely out of her depth but does her best and seems by the end to really care for Bond. I assume they got the idea from the novel The Spy Who Loved Me, which was about an ordinary woman getting mixed up in a Bond adventure. The Living Daylights would be my favourite Bond film if the villains were a bit less silly.

She was probably also inspired by Tatiana from 'From Russia with Love' [manipulated as part of a bigger villain's scheme and deemed dispensable] and Domino from 'Thunderball' [girlfriend of the villain who switches sides to bring him down].

    • @GuineaPigEveryday
      @GuineaPigEveryday 2 роки тому +2

Yeah its rlly such a shame about the villains because the rest I really love, especially the action, setting and character, the emotions not often shown in bond films are great. Especially how he gets properly upset and angry when Saunders dies and kind of lashes out at Kara. She's also clearly written to be a bit naive and innocent, yet still a strong-willed person, I get that shes a bit of a stereotype but definitely not as bad as the 60s. Their relationship too is for one of the most believable. I know a lot won't agree but I didn't really buy Tracy as much, especially cuz Lazenby was a much more philandering guy in the film and rarely showed interest in her. In Living Daylights, Bond is dedicated to her and shows real love, and there is clear chemistry too.

But hey, the more tiers of Bond Girl levels there are, the more ranking videos you get to do!
Tier 1: Main Bond girls who are important to the story, survive to the end and end up with Bond.
Tier 2: Bond Girls who are important to the story who either die or don’t end up with Bond at the end.
Tier 3: Characters like Sylvia Trench or Miss Caruso: named characters who don’t serve the plot but they sleep with Bond, so I guess it still counts.
Tier 4: Unnamed characters, but ones who Bond has slept with so, again, it counts apparently.
Tier 5: Unnamed characters like the receptionist in The Spy Who Loved Me who don’t really do much but have enough sex appeal so that also counts somehow.
Tier 6: Unnamed characters with no lines who don’t interact with Bond, like the women in Gonzales’ pool in FYEO.
Tier 7: Background extras wearing all their clothes.

Totally agree with your comments about Madeleine; while I am still angry about NTTD, one thing it did do right was improve upon the Bond/Swan relationship from Spectre.

You know what? I'll toss in the non-Eon Bond girls just for good measure.
    1. Tracy (OHMSS) -- She's obviously #1. She's the rare Bond girl to have a stronger character arc than "I guess I'm on 007's side now," and her fate feels doubly tragic for it.
    2. Vesper (CR '06) -- She's obviously #2. I don't quite think you can hit the impact of Tracy twice, but this is as close as you can get.
    3. Kara (TLD) -- More than any other Bond girl, she feels like an everyday person stuck in the middle of world-shaking events. And she has great chemistry with Dalton.
    4. Madeleine (NTTD) -- Bond falls in love with her a tad too quickly in Spectre, but she makes for a great pairing with him, which makes the ending of NTTD feel like even more of a jerk move on EON's part.
    5. Tatiana (FRWL) -- In terms of chemistry, none of Connery's other female leads come close, and her internal conflict makes her the most complex of the early (read: pre-Tracy) Bond girls.
    6. Natalya (GE) -- She's very relatable, and I love that she's allowed to spend most of the movie in her basic desk job attire rather than in some exotic garb.
    7. Octopussy (OP) -- She's Moore's best Bond girl for the chemistry alone, but I also like that she's a criminal with a heart of gold (sorta like a Catwoman type).
    8. Holly (MR) -- This Bond girl is one of the most (convincingly) intelligent and competent love interests of the series.
    9. Melina (FYEO) -- She's easily one of my favorite Bond girls . . . except when she's supposed to be expressing attraction to Moore.
    10. Pussy (GF) -- She's a well-acted, tough character, but I find the barn scene so repellant that it actually sours my feelings about Ms. Galore otherwise.
    11. Solitaire (LALD) -- Much like Ms. Galore, this is a really good character marred by Bond's apparent disregard for consent.
    12. Domino (NSNA) -- She is easily the best improvement in this remake, since she's actually given sufficient screen time!
    13. Vesper (CR '67) -- My preferred Ursula Andress character is the one who's essentially a villain. She might even rank higher if she didn't suddenly disappear from the picture.
    14. Tiffany (DAF) -- For the first 2/3 of the film, she's a great character. Then the script completely betrays her in the third act.
    15. Honey (DN) -- I appreciate the backstory we get with her, but I find her romance with Bond a little abrupt and unconvincing.
    16. Pam (LTK) -- She has a few really good moments (especially with Wayne Newton), but she's a generic 1980s action movie love interest.
    17. Camille (QOS) -- She's one of the better things about one of the worst Bond films, but she doesn't really stick with me.
    18. Domino (TB) -- There's a good character here that simply doesn't get enough screen time to make the proper impact.
    19. Anya (TSWLM) -- On paper, this character is a great co-lead, but Barbara Bach's wax-figure performance lets it down.
    20. Stacey (AVTAK) -- I find her convincing when she's allowed to be competent, but she's too much of a damsel in distress.
    21. Valerie (CR '54) -- This Americanized version of Vesper is not particularly remarkable, but she's not horrible, either.
    22. Jinx (DAD) -- She's okay if you just want to give Bond someone to shag with no strings attached, but that's a little disappointing for the main female lead.
    23. Christmas (TWINE) -- It's not that Denise Richards is a bad choice for a Bond girl. It's that she's a bad choice for *this* Bond girl.
    24. Wai (TND) -- She's fine as a reluctant ally, but the chemistry isn't there at all. You might as well turn Nomi into the love interest in the latter half of NTTD. It just doesn't work.
    25. Mary (TMWTGG) -- Of the Bond girls who actually get a prominent role in the film, she's the worst. Completely intolerable.
    26. Moneypenny or M? (SF) -- I suppose this is a placeholder for which MI6 agent best qualifies as the "Bond girl" of this film, if anyone.
    27. Kissy (YOLT) -- The worst Bond girl by default is the one who feels the most redundant and underdeveloped. Just stick with Aki!

Jinx's main issue is that the spin off was announced before the film came out [if it was announced after many would say 'Huh!'] and was going to be an origin story...so she was given little background in Die Another Day so it was hard to care about the character. Without Natalya, Bond doesn't find the location in Cuba, he doesn't have time bought with the satellite's reprogramming, and he certainly would have ridden that satellite down next to Trevelyan. Natalya is one of the few Bond girls who learns and adapts on her journey through the movie and employs tactics that she picked up on from earlier, truly excelling as an ordinary person thrust into an extraordinary situation.

Living Daylights was filmed during the AIDS epidemic in the news. So writers wrote Kara as she is in the film, with Bond slowly developing a relationship. But they let us know this is still the Bond we know, with the pre title line: " won't you join me".

I totally get where you're coming from with what Eva Green brings to Casino Royale what with her other roles in gothic horror, I'm reminded of that photo on set with her playing the piano with the cigarette in her mouth, she brings such an alluring energy to Casino, an off-kilterness so you're never quite sure what Vesper's intentions are which made her the perfect choice to play the role. And for how pivotal their roles had to be it was a miracle that we had actresses as good as Green and Rigg as Vesper and Tracy respectively.
I know I'm going to be sent to the gulag but I really like Dr Madeleine Swann she's certainly not in the same league as the other two and I'll admit my love her might not be rational but after No Time to Die I really appreciate her character and it does a lot to sell her and Bond's relationship, I like that they're two fundamentally broken people still trying to love each other. And personality-wise I like that she has a (justifiable) iciness about her and Léa Seydoux is incredible at capturing her vulnerability.

As someone who watches 007 actually for just the Bond Girls, Madeleine Swan gave almost every aspect of many Bond Girls.

Honestly, my issue with Christmas Jones isn't anything to do with Denise Richards at all. Its actually just that her character should've just been called "Exposition Jones" instead. The last time I watched TWINE, it was the first time where I noticed that all of her lines were essentially just reiterations of what was happening in the scenes and it was really annoying and not because of anything Denise Richards was doing either. Her character just suffers from having it where the Bond formula dictated having two Bond girls. If TWINE had just had Electra King as the Bond girl then it would've been fine... which Calvin, she is the Bond girl of TWINE, you know?! Where would she rank?! Great video!

Great video Calvin, really digging the long format! :) My two cents regarding Christmas Jones:
    1) regardless of the actress and her believability (and I really like Denise Richards, and find her no less credible as a scientist than Tanya Roberts as a geologist or Maryam d'Abo as a cellist), her inclusion in TWINE, to me, is akin to having Solange Dimitrios pop up during the Venice portion of Casino Royale instead of the Bahamas. Quite simply said, there is a bigger fish to fry. The relationship between Bond and Elektra is the core of the film, and then there's the M stuff. We do not need another character, Zukovsky is already there to help!!!
    2) even so, I think she does not gel very well with the tone of the film, much like Kara in TLD (agree with you on that one). It's very well known how TWINE's tone is all over the place, which is one of the most offputting things about a film that I otherwise enjoy a lot. Sadly, she is the most broad aspect of that tonal discrepancy, in my humble opinion :)

Madeline swann would be way higher up my list personally. For me, I do agree about spectre, she doesn't quite work I'm that film and their romance is rushed. But for me in No Time To Die she absolutely knocks it out of the park. She's one of if not my absolute favourite parts about the movie, i love her conversation with Craig when he comes back to find her in Norway, and after that she really works as a different take on the bond girl, taking on a motherly role as well as a girlfriend for bond, and as a result her priorities must be split. I love them as a family and there conversation at the end of NTTD is in my top 5 scenes in bond and their chemistry shines through for me. While she's obviously no vesper, NTTD alone elevates her into the top 5 for me

Agreed. I even liked her a lot more in Spectre re-watching the series as a 5 part run as she's the first woman bond has come across who's not a one night stand since Vesper. I get the feeling he's a man who wants to settle down by that point and feels a connection with Swan. No Time to Die builds on this and really cements her as a fav. I also disagree with Calvin's argument she's unlikable [especially as I don't get much enjoyment from some he's rated having 'comedy/camp' appeal]-her background with her father and Spectre mean's she's going to be naturally guarded but like Bond she wants to 'come out of the cold' and find love.

I never got the whole point of toxic fandom - I think your list is well supported in discussion of each entry you present. I absolutely agree with the top 2 choices and their placements and it being a "photo-finish". Such brilliant writing and performances deserve such accolades.

I think this ranking is a bit harsh on Kara, at least give her the dignity of being above Jinx in this ranking. Couldn’t argue with the top three chosen. I’m in the camp of giving Denise Richards a top 10 Bond girl for me. I enjoy her in the role. I think she’s a lot of fun. Never got the hate she gets from some fans. She’s in a film where she’s competing against Sophie Marceau and the expanded storyline Judi Dench got as M. But I also love TWINE a little too much since it has the honour of being the first Bond film I saw in the cinema.

    Still my favorite:

23:00 BLESS YOU for caring about Denise Richards! Sofia Coppola had a similar (if even more crushing) Godfather experience. Thank goodness Sofia found her footing as a director.

GoldenEye definitely learned a lot from Dalton's two movies about giving Bond's costar more to do.

I came here expecting Dr. Christmas Jones to be at the bottom of the list and was delighted to see her ranked just outside the top ten. I think Bond fans are mainly judging Denise Richards’ celebrity as an FHM pinup of the 90’s, her highly publicized marriage to Charlie Sheen and then her subsequent career in reality TV over her actual performance in the TWINE.

I love that you stuck with the gulag bit for the rest of the video! Great choices too...you have excellent taste in Bond Girls.
