I grew up self-taught. Could sort of play by ear. Pieced together a drum kit. Then I started playing more complex stuff, learning fills and polyrhythms. Thought, "ok... now it's time to learn them for real" and got lessons. Learned how to do all that stuff, but realized the real skill is knowing when NOT to play.
I went from punk bands to alt-country and that was a TOUGH adjustment. But my meter and my chops have gotten more refined for it

Reading the video title I thought this would go in the direction of "If you think about starting to play any kind of instrument..don't". Maybe pointing at the hassle of hauling around equipment as you have shown a couple of times already. But to my surprise, it's a very simple, yet truthful piece of advice for playing music.

what occured to me many many many, many times, during rehearsals, recordings, concerts.... whenever i play without much thinking (relaxed, well-fed, well-slept, after a small puff of mild mj sometimes, if need be:) - things go right, everything's in place, just observing my hands do the stuff i never got to learn, being happy i can play it anyway on point, being in the moment,, connecting with the other members of the group...... then there's that ending of the song when i feel "oh there comes this difficult passage, i know it's really easy, played it many times effortlessly before, just don't f*** it up, it's only 3 bars, you just got to play two times faster for three bars".... as soon as some "concious" words pass through my mind, things start to fall apart, mistakes begin to happen, the ending of the song loses impact...... as for me, it's best when you are just listening to the music coming out of your head and hands, no words in your head, listening to the sound of the band as a whole, as if from the perspective of the listener. "oh, i'm playing the concert right now, there are people, i forgot" :D.... anyway, i believe it wouldn't work in a Zappa cover band. hope i got my message through
It’s interesting how many revelations of this sort, are just describing flow state in different ways.
That’s absolutely where your most expressive and impressive playing will always come from.
And it makes a lot of sense, that it’s especially difficult to capture while recording🗿
