When I watched this the first time, I said out loud, "this is a master class in tension building!" For real, by the middle of the episode, I was in knots, but essentially nothing had happened yet. The use of sound design with acting and dialogue, deeply personal camera angels, as well as the claustrophobia of the set design in the diner all worked together to create one of the most tense scenes I have ever seen in television.

That was true for me as someone who grew up reading the comics this was based on. I knew what was going to happen, but the suspense was still overwhelming.

As Dream said, what John really did was remove their dreams and hopes (leaving them perhaps with only… desire and despair?).

  • @erikperhs_

You probably didn't notice, but The Fates helped Dream here. They appear to John and say he's gonna crush Dream's powers in his hands. If it wasn't for that, John wouldn't have thought of breaking the ruby.

The best part is that, as is their nature, The Fates told him the truth, but he didn’t interpret it correctly. Gotta be very careful with them.

I saw Neil Gaiman answer a question that was basically "What would you tell people who want to stop watching at episode five?"
"Because after that is the Sound of Her Wings. And it's worth it, it's hopeful, it's beautiful."

The Endless are endless. Their power isn't limited to their names, but can also affect its inverse, since one can't exist without the other. So Dream has power over reality, much like Death has power to give or extend life. Dream kept a lot of his power in the ruby a long time ago. John is just tapping into the Ruby's abilities over dreams and reality.

LMAO that diner stuff was very immersive. I was honestly shocked at how invested I got into those characters 😂 they didn't deserve to go out like that

Fun fact: This diner episode was a comic issue (from The Sandman) called "24 hours" because everything that happened in the diner was over the span of 24 hours with John Dee counting down every hour. According to Neil Gaiman, he still thinks it's one of the darkest issues he's ever written.

    • @0okamino

I agree with him very much on that. Though I do find it funny that, when Alan Moore was writing _From Hell,_ they went to have dinner, and ended up discussing what they were working on at the time. After Moore described what he was writing, Gaiman had to leave the table, go outside to get some air, and shake off the queasiness, much to Moore’s amusement.

Man this episode was absolutely incredible, top tier cinema right here. Absolutely great what they did there. The madness. The thirst. I would go as far as say this is one of the best TV episodes this year, by far my favourite episode of Sandman and one of my favorites ever on a TV show. It was one of the best one set story telling experiences I’ve ever seen. I loved it so so much. Cool touch is that if you listen to the TV in the background you start hearing reports about the slow unraveling of the world along with what is happening in the diner.
The whole he's 21 thing is a change, in the books it's even worse, he keeps calling her son "little", and he tells her he found her drug addict son being pimped out and that he paid to use him too. Implying that he abused him when younger, or that he had a thing for her son since he was young.
That was sanitized a bit for the series.
But i would say that the main difference is in John Dee itself. In the graphic novel he's doing it for "fun", there's no reason, hes evil and he do evil things. Even Neil himself said he made a huge mistake because he wanted so badly to use DC characters that he now had access to. So it was no wonder he changed it.
And im thankful for that actually because John Dee in the show has motivations, ideals, and you can empathize with the character even if he's wrong in the way of acting. This makes it more terryfing (in a psychological way) since you can understand it.
On the other hand, the show is less graphic, and "gorey", but I think it's to be expected. They still kept most of the panels, the eye stab for example is straight out of the comics, im really surprised how far they went

In the comics he says he met the son "in the pen", short for penitentiary, which implies that he had been tried and incarcerated as an adult

The deaths at the diner are real and everyone the Corinthian murdered really died. Dream can not control life and death outside his realm, only his sister Death can and she is not always present at every death but she is aware of them. Desire has always been carrying out plans to poke at Dream because she is jealous of his realm and his power and she thinks he’s arrogant so she’s constantly trying to humble Dream. She knows she can not take him in a one on one fight so she gets their sisters, Delirium and Despair to help her with her plans.

Lol, I did the same, when dude got mad at other dude over the lady. Like what, you can't be mad you were just doing it yourself over in the kitchen lol. I figured it would happen like that, taking away the lies would only end in madness and death. Crazy episode, actually was feeling sad at the end for Jon, and the diner people. Also had the suspicion before the "fight" that Dream was playing Jon, "lose" on purpose to rejoin with his power inside before Jon destroyed the ruby thinking he won. Do wish he lasted a little longer though, he was amazingly unnerving in such unassuming, docile manner.

This is the first time ever in a show that i see almost a whole ep dedicated to the antagonist to slowly showing us the world and his thinking through his point of view. I have always appreciated antagonists who have ''noble but cruel'' goals kinda like Thanos like when they think they're bettering the world yet they're doing it through a cruel means or when in their head, they're absolutely convinced that they are doing the right thing yet it's not!! I just appreciate the show creators sooo much for taking the time to slooowly show us just that and for half the ep almost convincing us that John's dream world was truly a better one until those two guys started fighting and everything went to shit.
Kinda reminds me of Joaquin Phoenix's joker, where u start out empathizing w him at first but then there's a single moment where his line of thinking/his ideology crosses the boundaries of morality and it's all flipped out and u see his true colors and in john's case it was even forshadowed when he said 'ur stories have happy endings bc you know when to stop' signaling that he doesn't stop, he crosses the lines till death...
Truly loved that slow build up throught this ep with John, and in his case he went from seeming Selfless (his dream/motive being an honest world for humanity) to selfish when we realize he wanted a world without lies bc HEE was lied to, and wanted everyone to be their true selves even if they're murderers bc HEE MURDERED SOMEBODY!! and wants a world where that's okay so he doesn't have to feel guilty about it!!
Sorry for the loooong comment but i had just finished watching this ep too and i couldn't contain my appreciation for this show and ep and i saw that u guys made a reaction of this ep too so i had to find an outlet for my appreciation thru this comment.... So glad to see u guys watching this show too 💗

To be clear everything in the Diner happened in the waking world. In the comics it's referenced in a future issue. Yes it's straight out of the comics. The Diner is issue no.6 of The Sandman comics and Dream vs John Dee is issue no. 7.
And Glacier don't judge a book by it cover as the next episode makes clear.😁

Yes the people in the Dinner died and all the taking away the lies and inhibition wasn’t just happening in the Dinner it was happening around the world too which is why it looked like riots happened because they did. Yes that was Desire at the very end there sometimes a man sometimes a woman sometimes both sometimes neither its whatever you desire all you want all you could ever desire it is want itself in every aspect.

This episode is exactly like the comic issue. There are likely very small differences to set it in modern times, instead of 20+ years ago, when it was written, but those moments looked like they were peeled off the page and given life.
The next episode is similar. This show has been amazing.

There’s also a tendency to be snippy when already dealing with a bad situation like a breakup. It’s not necessarily a good excuse for the behavior, but it is an understandable reason.

i love this episode but the comics and the audible is definitely darker. if the comic is 10/10 this is 7.5/10 in terms of darkness, the show focused on physiological horror, but the comic really encompassed all genre of horror. this is issue 6 and 7 if i remember correctly

@@TheLibrarianOG1 No, the people in the diner very much died. John made them remove all the lies they'd built up for themselves and made then reveal their true selves. He believed that their suffering was brought about by their need to cling to their lies, so he showed them how they truly were and it broke them.
