Do You Need A Special Kick Pedal For Edrums?

- Опубліковано 24 вер 2024
- Someone recently asked me if electronic drums require a special type of kick drum pedal. I answer that question, along with some advice on the best kickdrum beaters for edrums in this video.

Thank you
lol
LTVestaa thx bro really needed that...
Thank you. You saved me 0:00 of my life.
It has been 3 years since I've read this comment. I'm ready to say thank you
Hey Justin, could you do a video about the maintenance of the edrums? Something about the cleaning would be nice.
Thanks!
I'll keep that in mind :)
I'm still amazed by how great your videos are, you always do great research, consistent uploads, pleasing to listen to and although the production quality might not be quite on the level of a professional production, it's about as good as iPhone videos get and still way better than 95% of youtubers in the
Thanks man, I appreciate that. I don't have the budget of Buzzfeed, but I'm going to continue improving the channel, I want to get to 100,000 one day
@@65Drums it's been 4 years and now your only 6k away.
I subbed
hey Justin. Recently my band had its first gig with the e-drums, which was possible thanks to the thigs I learned in your channel and I thank you for that. It wouldn't be a live performance without the unexpected problems. You see, the stage was made of a very thin wood and every time the drummer hit the kick the whole stage transmitted the vibration through the rack activating the cymbal triggers. There was a lot of double kick that night and as you can imagine it wasn't very fun. At the end the drummer made it without being too messy but I guess we'll be checking stages closely in the future
Hey thanks man! btw: I don't know what drumset that was, but you should be able to fix that by adjusting the cross talk settings.
It's a dm10. The cross thing doesn't work properly with EZdrummer for some reason.
Which DW kick drum pedal would you recommend for the ROLAND 17 KVX ? 🥁🤔 Great video btw !!!
It is actually the heat that causes problems. The felt causes heat on the mesh and melts it. Same effect with your hand sliding real fast over the carpet, you would burn yourself by doing this. And the only kind of patch that is properly sticking to the mesh is the drum-tec one. Others went off real quick.
Vdrum Tips I use a Remo double pedal patch that works good too.
I destroyed 2 aquarian (normal) bass-drum heads inside a few months. The top layer kept splitting because I was basically melting it.
Does it stick well to the mesh head?
My drum patch is still hanging on to the mesh. But not completely flush.
My Evans double bass patch is sticking to my kd85 pretty well.
Time to bust out the wooden beater! Thanks for all your knowledge and expertise!
Super useful video thank you mate. I was wondering about this exact question for a Yamaha KPH 65 electronic tower. Great informative vids. Keep ‘em coming!
Just bought a SD1250 didn’t know the pedal is purchased separately. Heading to guitar center and pick one up thank u for the vid 👍🏾
thank you for you videos bruh, its been my number one resource in the nail biliting numerous decisions you need to make with all the components, making sure you dont fuck up
I don't know about everyone but I could not give two shits about having to replace a drum head. What I care about is not damaging the triggers or piezo inside. So maybe the question should be "What is better for the piezo felt or plastic beaters? I have to change out the piezo now and its a pain in the ass.
Sweetwatwer sells this beater that uses a tennis ball that's apparently designed for electronic drums because it's quieter than a plastic beater or whatever. Does it feel any different? Damage your mesh head? Give any less response to the trigger? Asking you first because you're the real MVP expert on electric stuff, your videos are so Informative and fun to watch. Thanks!
Hey thanks Kevin :) I think my friend that runs the channel Vdrum Tips did a video on a beater that's similar to that. It works well.
My plastic beater mashed up rubber pad from my Alesis Nitro Mesh kit. It still works but it's damaged.
I've just ordered my first ever electronic kit (with mesh heads), and was looking for advice exactly like this 😀👍
Thanks!!
Throw a slam patch on your kick and you can use any beater you want. I'm using a 22 inc bass drum with a roland powerply head and a rt30 roland kick trigger ,i also have 2 pillows inside and it works great. I have the remo slam patch on mine and use felt beaters.
Thats what I do :)
I use a mesh kick-drum (with a felt beater)...
I immediately ordered another kickdrumbeater... thanks for the tip ☺
:) that or get the patch, either will work. Glad the video was helpful!
THANKS! I am getting my VAD 506 tomorrow!
On my Alesis drum tower I could only use the Alesis kick pedal, a normal drum pedal would not attach securely. So keep that in mind when purchasing Alesis Electronic drums.
This is a super helpful video.. And a big plus because it's straight to the point
my main question for a kick pedal was about quietness more than anything! I'm trying to get the quietest pedal possible to not disturb neighbours, and I'd rather not buy a stick-less pedal if i can help it
what about the rubber circle beater on the newer iteration of the Speed Cobra?
Well, I own a Yamaha KP-65 kick tower and the beater that I'm using is KAT tennis-ball beater (black)
i cut my kick in half cuz the pad was facing straight up and i wanted a regular kick pedal.
then i taped the pad to a cinderblock and it's been great aside from my kick pedal going limp all the time
I just bought the DW3002 for my VAD506!
I use an Evan's patch on mine as well. Doesn't effect the action or sound triggering. Highly recommend especially with metal drummers who are running fast. I actually use patches on all of my heads and cymbals so as to prolong the life. Just thought it might protect better
I remember when I was trying to buy my second drum set and I kept looking up td27kv kick drum beater did that for a couple of days and found 65 drums thank uuuu (and yea the td27kv is amazing
Is there a softer beater that can safely be used on a mesh head?
Hey brother. Good to cover beater type for edrums. A lot of people don't know damage felt beaters can do to mesh heads. Look fwd to your next video.
Glad you liked the video :)
For my e drum kit i use a rubber beater from the speed cobra :D it works great
So you're telling me I can use any kick drum pedal on my Roland HD-1 because almost everywhere I've read says that nothing is compatible for that specific model. Is that true???
Great vid Justin! im using a kd9 and i was using a felt beater until i seen this. invested in a drum patch too. potentially saved me a lot of cash! :-D
Awesome :)
the alesis nitro kick drum pedal comes double sided with a felt side and a plastic side
thanks for this video! super quick and informative
Just moved into a new house and my kit is above the garage in the bonus room now. However, my kick pedal is now fooooking rediciously loud in that room. Is there something I can buy to dampen it or build myself?? Help UA-cam peeps ✌
how bout double kick pedals?
dude I love your videos!
Awesome! Thank you :)
was wondering about this for a couple weeks, buying an alesis crimson kit this weekend. thanks!
hey the video arrived just in time :)
Trying to find an answer for this. I use a Roland TD-17 KVS. I want a double kick trigger set up lie ten acoustic set ups with beaters. Beaters are too loud in my home so I even use a trigger for the bass drum leaving the Roland Kick pad unused. Can I use two trigger pedals as kicks without losing the hi hat?
On rubber heads the plastic beater double triggers.
Hey Justin.. thanks for the awesome videos. Can you change the head of the KD10 Kick Pad?
muy bueno, muy buenos todos tus tutoriales
Saludos desde TIJUANA, MX
I'm glad that you like the videos! Thank you :)
Gaffa-tape with an old creditcard... Used it for ages (live & studio) ; I even recorded 2 albums with it.. Gives also that fat click sound.
THANKS
Do you think the flat head piece would be a problem even though you are using a kick drum patch?
Hi Justin,
Thank you for all your videos!
Personally I play e-drums mainly because I'm in an apartment.
For me the most important in a kick pad is silence.
I have a TD4-KP and the sound of the kick pad is infernal for my neighbors ... but also my wife !!!
What is your best kick pad in terms of feeling and silence? Yamaha UK100? Roland TK-9? TK-10? TRIGGERA KRIGG? Other?
Thank you for your feedback on this subject
Marc (France)
Hey Marc, glad you're liking the videos! If you want something that's REALLY quiet, pick up a Roland KT10 (it lets you customize the feel of the spring and weight)
thank's man ;-)
Wooden beaters can heat up and actually damage your mesh head.
That happened to a friend of mine his head look like it had melted
Wow I didn’t know that, thanks!
Thanks for sharing 👍 you rock Brother
I am thinking of buying the roland td 1k. Can I play slide or heel toe bass techniques with it?
Spherical I would think would be good. The 682 guys who sell the conversion kits give you wooden spherical beaters.
great info thanks!!
Do you need to buy additional kick drum pedals w electronic kits like the Yamaha and Alexis drum pad pro ?
Cool man, im excited, just got the roland v drum Td10 and I need help setting up the kick drum, the pad thing is like loose, hard to explain , do i need some special tool? drum key, thanks? id like to see a tutorial about that. Thanks a lot
Hey help me out with this, can i use a kp65 yamaha pad with a td1k vdrum module from roland?
What kick pedals do you recommend?
Hey Justin. Thanks for all your time and effort in putting these videos together. My question is have you had any problems with your Roland KD A22 rubber impact pad? I’ve tried different beaters and some have caused a permanent indentation into the strike zone. I’ve tried the Gibraltar Click Patch to protect the impact area but I found that it doesn’t stick very well. Any thoughts on how to try and keep the beaters from damaging the KD A22?
Thanks.
I have a Roland expensive Edrums set ... can I use that kick pedal on my real drums bass drum? whats the guidelines on that? rather not damage a head or the pedal.
Justin thank you so much for everything! Love all your videos. I am looking fwd to purchasing my first ekit, the TD-50K2 once it’s released! It comes w a KD-140V bass drum w mesh head. Going to use a Pearl Eliminator Redline double pedal setup, and will use plastic side as per your video! Wondering how you orient the double beaters on your kick: couldn’t tell from the glimpse in your video, do you symmetrically align both beaters off-center? Or do you do what I used to do w acoustic drums back in the day and have main beater aligned for dead center of the head and the left slave beater a bit off-center, cheating left? Wondering best way for the vdrums. Also wondering if you think I need the evans pad to protect the kd-140, thx so much!!
I have a pearl double kick for my TD17KVX and since moving my high-hat to the 11 o-clock position to stop left and right cross sticking when playing them together, the drive bar is now about 3 inches too long and massive google searches and a trip to my local Long n McQuade's has yielded no love in finding one. Any suggestions Justin? Apparently different manufacturers use proprietary connections and it seems that pearl only has the one (which seems strange to me.) Thanks a ton :)
At 3:19 you show both beaters pointed opposite of how you are suggesting at the beginning. I have the red one and it is pointed like you have it at 3:19.
So confused
Don't think too hard about it. The whole point is just use a kick drum patch. And if you don't have one, use plastic beaters.
Hello Justin
I need your help as long as you're a pro drummer
If you were me which one would you choose?
Pearl Double Pedals P-2052C Eliminator or Tama HP910LWN Speedbobra
I'm so confused honestly
I have the Efnote 5 btw
I was using felt for years on my TD-11 and never had a problem - someone then told me that the felt would end up damaging my mesh drum head so I switched it around. After a few months, the plastic beater had left an imprint in my mesh head... very disappointed! Especially since that’s rolands advice too?
Hey man. I hope you can still see this. I made a diy triggers. Im having problem with my bass trigger. It wont hitna double stroke. Like if the song is pfast and need a dble stroke it wont. It only reads slow stroke. For example is the song helena. It just wont kick in. Pls help me
so can I use an acoustic drums double bass pedal on an electronic drum?
From what I get from the video: yes, but it might be a good idea to tape the felt heads, to reduce abrasion of the mesh.
Can you use double kicks on most e drums? I’m specifically thinking of the alesis crimson ll se.
My Alesis Command e kick drum has a strange plate to clamp on to. It has a raised groove going across the plate and I cant get my mapex p500 tw double bass pedal to clamp down tightly. ?
Any ideas ?
Just gonna give the guys lurking in the comments a little TL;DR
You don’t need a special pedal, all you need is literally anything other than a felt beater. Unless you’re using a rubber kick tower, stay away from felt.
Would adding an extra kick drum to an old Roland TD-12 module be possible or does it make sense? I'm thinking of putting it in one of the Aux inputs.
Hey thanks for the tip! I used to play on a acoustic tama superstar but sold it because no where I lived would allow it. I bought a lyxjam 8 piece from Amazon. Did a lot of research and heard better things about this over the donner and Alesus. Have you come across this? It’s pretty great for under $500. Some sounds are terrible lol. But it’s pretty solid so far. And the large mesh snare is fun. Would like to get your review on it and any tips! Thanks man. Also my budget was obviously under $500 or I would have gone with a Roland.
Do u recommend the patch for rubber heads such as the Simmons KP1 ?
Has anyone ever used a kicker-less pedal for bass drum, like used the hi-hat control, or maybe there are dedicated kicker-less bass drum pedals, and if so, how did that go?
I ask, because I hope it will be more silent (to play in a multi-floor apartment).
Wow that is one fancy kit. I’m just sitting here with my Roland td-3 kit like ._.
You like the dw heads but have an iron cobra double pedal? Do you like the iron cobra duel chain drive more than the dw duel chain pedals?
any experience with cajon beaters for meshheads?
It would work, just crank the sensitivity
I have a TAMA speed iron cobra pedal. Is the proper way to actually clip the pedal TO the base of the alesis kick? thx
Older video I know. But what about a rubber beater on an E drum kit?
I've never come across one, but I think it would be fine
@@65Drums I appreciate the response! I have a tama speed cobra with the dual sided plastic/felt beater. They sell the upgraded tama cb900as accu-strike cobra beater. However it's a 1 sided rubber beater and a drum patch would protect it period, I was just wondering if it would wear faster on a double mesh head than a plastic beater would.
I subscribed! Have a good one!
Wats the best beater for Yamaha dtx6?
What about danmar click patches? I ordered one based off how it may help the acoustic sound of my atv adrums whilst i practise double kick to a metronome
What do you think about iron cobras and other double kickpedals?
I really like alot of different brands. DW5000, Trick, and Iron Cobra are all very good
Hey Justin, do you have any recommendations for any good inexpensive double kick drums that will be good for e drums? My kick pad is a Mesh (Roland KD-10).
Thank you.
I have a alesis surge mesh kit and I heard that the 8" mesh kick pad missed a lot of kicks. How is this fixable? Or what can i do to still use my dw 4000 double pedal ?
How can I set up double bass on a e drum kit?
thanks for the video! i'm assuming the new tama speed cobra beaters are fine for the mesh heads, since they're a plastic? looking at getting a roland would love to keep extra costs to a minimum. cheers!
Hey Justin, I need some advice. I'm thinking about buying a Roland KD 120 Pad. I've heard that some kick pedals have a problem connecting with the bracket because it's to high. I have a Demon Drive double pedal. Have you heard of anyone having a problem connecting there Demon Drive to the KD120? I really love the Demon Drive pedal, but don't want to dump $500 on the KD120 if they won't work together. Thanks, Elmer
Great videos! Getting a KAT KT4 With the Mylar head. What kind of beater is best? Thank you
hi justin. i have a td4kp. what kind of beater should i use with it's kick pad (not rubber, not mesh)? a plastic one as well? thanks!
Hey Justin today I ordered an Roland td1kpx from Amazon as I was getting it in very low price but the kick drum pedal is not included in the box I think. So if I use an acoustic drum pedal with the kit will there be any problem? What kind of bass drum pad does it have? Is it mesh or rubber?
Hi, pls help me..i just bought evans eq patch but should i really use "kick drum patch" even if i use rubber side of pedal beaters on my edrum kit (Td15+20" pearl kick drum which roland powerply mesh head added) so if there iwll be any fray away on thre mead head i dont want to use it because patch increase the noise drastically..,i live in a apartment.. you know.. ;) infact i got the delicate info from the video though i wonder your futher comments..... :)
Justin i have a problem with my kick pedal, it gave me rebound when I use it, I tried to loosen the mesh head of the kick drum but still have this problem. Any idea?
+Franco Contreras that's about the only thing you can do. De-Tune the mesh a bit more if you can.
i got annoyed when i found out that on most acoustic drums the snare is white and the rest is transparent
I'm a paraplegic and needing suggestions for a trigger for a kick drum. Would like to use some kind of trigger I bite on. Any suggestions??
This is an interesting problem. I've thought about it, and you could buy a Pintech drum trigger. It's the size of a really thick quarter. It has cable leading to a quarter inch input, so you can plug it into the drum module with a guitar cable. Maybe wrap a piece of rubber around it so when you bite on it, the force doesn't damage the plastic. Here's the link, take a look:
www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/pintech-acoustic-drum-trigger?pfm=item_page.rr1?pfm=ac-a
Its only $20
What kick pad do you use? I want one that will work very well with a double peddle. Thanks, your vids are very helpful
When using mesh and triggers, does a smaller drum size work better than larger sizes or is it pretty consistent?
It depends on the type of drum trigger it is. Side mounted ones start to struggle on the larger shells. The center mounted ones are better all around in my opinion.
Alesis forge vs alesis command mesh
What about the Roland KT-10? It's clothy and not really mesh. I'm using the Demon Drive felts and really don't want to switch it up...
I think you're fine
Ok Justin, the Alesis DM10 Studio Mesh kit I'm trading my Roland in on comes with the Alesis kick pedal that came DM8 I believe. The beater looks similar to the DW beater you use. It's 2 sided felt/plastic, and they have it set to the felt side (Ugh!), but it's a floor model. I've played around on it a couple times and it's in dire need of adjustment. I'm just wondering if it's gonna be a decent kick pedal or should I just plan on buying a different one right away. Have you ever played with an Alesis pedal?
Alesis pedals should be good enough. I rarely have played a terrible kick pedal.
Copy that, thanks!
Oh, if I do wind up buying a kick pedal to replace the Alesis pedal I'm gonna get the Cannon Twin Effect pedal. I might just get it anyway. My whole life whenever I airdrum practice I've always used my heel. It just comes naturally for me to do that and I think I could benefit from this kind of pedal. Just wish there were more videos out there on it but oh well :)
Does the patch manke it more silent? I have a rubber kick pad.
Not really :/
What would u consider the most affordable and versatile kick stand that can accommodate a double kick?
I ask because I was ready to purchase an alesis forge until I discovered the stock kick stand couldn't trigger fast enough for my style.
P.s. been looking towards the pintech til I heard the module demonstration
maybe look at ebay, lots of mesh kickdrums on there for decent prices
Can you plug an electric drum kit into some 2.1 speakers?
You can plug electronic drums into any kind of speakers you want. Drum amps are best though
What about for the td 17 ?
Just bought one !!! Here in Brasil...great Kit! And Roland advice to use the plastic side of the beater. I bought a Roland kick pedal.
I have a TD-17KVX as well and use a Roland plastic beater but I’m wondering if there is something softer that can be used..thoughts?
What he said at 2:47 was so out of pocket 💀
