From what I gather, the parts Jimmy first brought in were for piano and drums, with a few vocal melodies. Not lyrics, but melodies, because he didn't have the lyrics fleshed out. He seemingly did scratch takes like that for a lot of songs, including Brompton Cocktail, Buried Alive, Almost Easy, and Nightmare, though Matt took over most of them in the final version with Jimmy's melodies as a reference. The Jimmy vocal tracks in this video that aren't in the main song were probably from the demo, which the band hasn't released, so this breakdown was the first time even hardcore A7X fans heard it. I imagine Jimmy recorded those a little piece by a little piece as the lyrics were written. The fast parts and cartoonish backing parts seem to have been added last. That's likely because they're so extreme compared to the softer parts, whereas the screams would've been dangerous on their vocal cords.
Clarinet really is the secret to life, and A7X are great at including it in their tracks. I don't remember if we had you do the A7X Fact or Fiction video yet, but in it, Matt debunked a rumor that he could play clarinet. I think he should, because he'd be very gifted at it. Clarinet is part of why I like M.I.A. so much, when they include it at the end. It's a bold and recognizable instrument that adds great depth to a genre like heavy metal. It's incredible to hear.
This song really heightened what Avenged Sevenfold were capable of and gave them a lot of confidence. They'd done I Won't See You Tonight, Strength of the World, and The Wicked End and those were incredibly cinematic songs, but what they did with this was indomitable. A song that absolutely no one can top. The best part is that it's not a serious song about a serious subject, and because it's fun, it's all the more genuine and unique. It's something Matt felt passionate about, and his drive to finish it led to everyone else working to create arguably the band's greatest song, whether it's a person's favorite song or it's a hit or it has critical approval or not. People can't say Avenged Sevenfold didn't put everything on the table for this song. That really makes them stand out as artists even more than musicians. They truly care about both to a degree that few people do, and if a joke song was such a painstaking effort, that says a ton about their ethics.
I got a little sad when you noticed Jimmy's expressions during the drinking part, because I'm pretty sure you're right. I don't think he wanted to drink either. In one of the clips for Making the Album, there's a part where Jimmy was hitting his chest and making jokes about slapping it like a game console and about his internal organs failing. He seemed to really be uncomfortable sometimes, and I think drinking was hurting him a lot until it numbed him. At the last party Zacky threw, he didn't drink at all while he was there. He didn't seem to want them seeing the pain he was in, or the stupor he tried to keep himself in while his time was running out. You can tell he loved them and was happy to be with them, but was worried to let them down or make them feel unhappy. He was a good friend until the end.
I think recording this song was a huge part of history. It may not influence a whole generation of people to write in the avant-garde, but certainly people will have a lot of hope that maybe their kids WILL record with a band like Avenged Sevenfold that need a good classical arrangement in their music. The sky isn't the limit anymore. Now these musicians can accomplish truly incredible things by applying themselves and giving themselves the right opportunities. In that way, I think Avenged Sevenfold are a very influential band even if most of their music doesn't have that "whoa, we created a whole genre" vibe. They're legends to us, and that's everything that any artist could ever need to know to realize their ambition means something.
I'm super happy this video came up in the Patreon Polls. Keep up the great work, Randi!!! 💙

I agree. I think A7X has opened doors for future bands. It's impressive just how creative they are and all of the layers that go into their music. The fact or fiction video you mentioned - I watched it, at least part of it, not long after I started reaction to A7X. It had came up as a suggestion and I figured it would help me learn about Matt a little bit. I don't know if I watched the whole thing, but I remember the clarinet part.

@@BetterEveryDayUA-cam It would be great to see him play any instrument live, just as a one-off. He can sing and play at the same time and did in the Paradigm recording videos, but generally doesn't. I'd love more stripped down songwriter moments.

Oh my god this was delightful! Little Piece of Heaven will always be a fan favourite-and not just because we lost Jimmy. One of my favourite memories is still dancing with one of my friends at the LBC show in the back singing along with the confetti falling as they closed the show with it. It's SO special, and it's awesome to see this detailed of a breakdown of how complex it was to put together.
You can definitely hear the Pinkly Smooth influence, too-those of us who had adored that side project never thought we'd hear anything like it out of avenged but I admit, I lost my shit a bit the first time I heard little piece of heaven, going "OMG IT'S PINKLY SMOOTH WTF" lol

I love the part 11 minutes into this where Matt tried singing the chorus differently. I think I mentioned this on the Anthony Vincent reaction you did with all of the different styles. When Anthony sang that "Everybody's gotta die some tie-e-iiime" part like Axl Rose for his Guns N' Roses section, it made me gasp. This video hadn't come out, so he wouldn't have known, but singing the line that way is exactly what Matt tried to do here. Axl Rose found his way into the song already and we didn't even hear it yet. 😂

That's really cool! Anthony Vincent seems to dig into the artists he replicates. He must have just noticed some Axl similarities in Matt's vocals elsewhere or something. Maybe. 🤔

to be fair Axl is a huge inspiration to Matt as a singer

@@UhOh_ItzJDX Well yeah, but of every line in the song that Anthony could've chosen for Guns N' Roses, that one specifically is the only one Matt tried to hit with the Guns N' Roses flair. It's poetic.

How could anyone take A7X seriously after seeing this. The band seem to live for fun. Never in all my dreams did I ever imagine a "50" track recording for a single song. Editors nightmare, but they pulled it off nicely. For along reaction, it sure ended quick.
And now for my old tickler, Spike. Can't wait.

i've always thought Bass guitar has always had such a unique place in a band. definitely the least flashy (most the time) but it adds SO much to the song. most people don't notice it when it's there, but they'd most definitely notice if it got removed. it adds so much while commanding almost no attention

I only have 3 songs left from later albums, then I'll work through the rest from sounding the seventh trumpet.
