  • From Season 1 of Walt Disney's Disneyland Anthology program we have Episode 3: Prairie and Seal Island which originally aired on November 10th, 1954. James Algar describes some of the tricks the Disney photographers must use to capture the lives of animals in their native habitats. The next portion of the show features animals from the prairies of North America, detailing their lives through the seasons of a typical year (portions of this segment from the Vanishing Prairie have been removed due to copyright). In the last segment Winston Hibler introduces us to Seal Island as the show moves northward to Alaska and the Pribilof Islands, the migratory home of the fur seal. This segment was the first True-Life Adventure, released theatrically in 1948.
Note: this episode is from a re-airing on the Disney Channel on July 9th, 1985 (notice the opening bumper for TDC episodes from 1984-1986) which is itself a special presentation of the Wonderful World of Color episode from April 28th, 1963, despite the 1954 designation (when it originally aired).

I really wanna thank you so much for posting these videos. It makes me angry to Disney refuses to release most of these old specials which include precious rare footage of Walt himself.

Absolutely amazing. 1954. Disney always wanted color. Way ahead of its time.
