    When we can get to about 800-1000 Wh/kg energy density (about 3 hours of flight time on a single battery pack weighing about 20-25kg), I will happily dump every single gas paramotor I've ever owned and move to electric. Excellent stuff!!!

      that is far away in the future i guess. but we are slowly getting there! 20kg for 3 hours flight time is magic territory and if we would have that right now everybody would dump gasoline. as i said electric isnt for everybody but i love it even right now and will never ever go back to gasoline. since i cant find really much information about this entire EPPG thing i decided to start this journey myself and see where it goes.

      range anxiety is the biggest reason pilots still refuse electric paramotors. i stick to my opinion: its not for everybody. if you wanna do 5 hour cross country flights, by all means stick to your gasoline engine.
      but if you love a quiet vibration free smooth and insane powerful unit which can be charged on the field in same time you need to make a cup of tea then this is a good option for a nice afternoon exploration flight after work. it doesnt smell inside the car. and is overall so clean.
      i wanna show that its possible to use any electric car 230V output to fly the entire day on location. charging one battery pack while using the second pack to fly for 35-45min for example. come back to land and have a snack. swap battery and continue to fly.
      or just combine both packs and fly 80-90min.
      depending on weather 20-30min is my personal sweetspot. after that time i wanna come back and have a break. spend some time with family and go back up for another flight. these batterie packs are much cheaper than anybody think so its also very easy to buy a third or even fourth pack in case you dont have a hybrid or electric car/ powerplug nearby. just charge them all up before you leave to your LZ. the charger i use in the video can charge 4 seperate batteries same time. having the option to increase charging to 60 amps will get 4 batteries from empty to full in an hour.
      i see others around me with DIY electric PPGs here and they need 2-4 hours to charge only 1 battery which can then fly for 15-20 min...
      i would not want to wait such long time. would you?

    Sweet! Charging from your EV. I have a EV VW ID4, never thought of this. If you could optionally attach a charger to the frame and use EV stations, you could potentially do long distances on an EV paramotor. Or have your partner in the EV follow you for long distance flights. Nice!

    • @cloudpandarism2627
      @cloudpandarism2627  11 місяців тому

      the charger is too heavy and big i think. a fast charger for 4kw could get the battery full in 30 minutes but for that you need carry around 6kg extra. not worth it. what is better is as you said correct, have your wife drive the electric car to the next spot. bring the charger there where you land and charge it full like that haha! in this video you see the most powerful charger i could find for the time being. 60 amps is ridiculous. my car have a 16A 230V outlet and it still shut off sometimes because the load towards end gets too high. i got a second charger with "only" 2500w around 51A max. that should be fast enough for most situations. would you consider getting one of the first prototypes for a better price and use your car to charge and fly? give your honest opinion about it.

    • @ColinMacKenzieRobots
      @ColinMacKenzieRobots 11 місяців тому +1

      @@cloudpandarism2627 Yes, that charger is too big, I was thinking if there was a way to optimize it somehow and also only taken when doing a long distance. Like it's probably mostly heat-sink. 2 hours is possible but you carry extra weight thats true. my sweet spot is 30 min and then i wanna land to have a rest. so for me this is perfect. i cant understand how you professionals fly so long time without getting tired and arms falling off. 😅 maybe i am too old for this. but yeah you are right. eventually we will get there. couple more years in development. for me right now flying electric have WAAAY more benefits than disadvantages. in china people are not allowed to just go and buy gasoline in a canister. because too many idiots would burn the station down while smoking. so they just made it impossible to fill up your paramotor without alot trouble.
      then there is no gasoline smell in the car on way home which gave me insane headaches each time i went to fly.
      no more messing around with oil mixtures and engine maintenance. noise and strong vibrations combined with the heat on my back really threw me off couple of times to the point it was almost painful to fly. (because my brand new but crap moster185 was a monday unit with lots and lots of problems as you see in my crash videos before)
      all that is gone with electric and having a hybrid car with 230V 16A outlet was a nobrainer for me to switch to EPPG. i love how silent it is and smooth while having insane power to get my fat a$$ up.
      i am always happy to hear other pilots opinions about this. keep the blue side up mate and thanks for your comment°

      i tested the new massive SSL battery yesterday. way beyond 1 hour flight time and less weight than my gasoline 172 black devil before. i got like 200gb footage from that and try to upload a video soon. 3 people flew the same battery. first me couple of minutes. came back to land. i just went out the harness. my flight teacher jumped in and flew half hour. then he did some touch/go´s, landed and then his brother flew another half hour. after he came back battery was still 29% plus reserve. we are creeping up on 2 hours. my flight teacher broke both of his legs so for him heavy paramotors are a pain but even he said carrying this is a breeze. no problem at all cause the weight is so close to pilots back.

  • @iKenFlyPPG
    @iKenFlyPPG Рік тому +6

    I think you said this is a 30 Ah pack. You should consider charging over 1C degrades the battery cells. It may bode well to slow charge it after a flight or the night before instead of supercharging it when you're setting up. You're going to lose endurance.
    Another major characteristic is max cell voltage, that charge probably goes to 4.2V, further diminishing the capacity of the pack, so there are 2 things working against you. If anything end the charge early. With my escooter, I opened the charge and reduced the top voltage to 4.10V, an industry go to for longer life with a lion lipo.

    • @cloudpandarism2627
      @cloudpandarism2627  Рік тому +3

      good points but the cells i use have a normal charging rate of 10C and 15C fast charging. having currents around 19-20 amps is already much lower than people normally use to charge them. i also found out that there is nothing worse for lipos then charging them at night and leave them at full capacity sitting half day until LZ arrival. its much better to take them fresh off the charger with a bit temperature already inside from charging so they dont reach their optimal discharge temperature later from draining cells with motor.
      but in principle you are right. charging cells slower is doing them well. thats why i have a new charger on way to me which can be set to 10 or 15 amps instead of 20A which is the minimum for that huge charger. and i will also use trhe internal 230V 10A outlet in my car to charge the battery while i am driving to my flying area because i always need to drive 2.-3 hours anyway. perfect for getting the pack full on arrival and still keep the C rate rather low.
      charging the night before to 4.19 and then just leave the battery standing there for 12 hours is a bad idea because voltage will always drop to 4.10 or even lower. i am working with lithium batteries for 10 years now and leaving them fully charged for longer periods of time hurts them the most.
      i accept a slightly faster degeneration because these batteries are not same crazy expensive than lets say a high quality sony 21700 pack which should last go 6 years.
      i am happy to get 2-3 years out of these batteries but having multiple of them to change in between flights which further reduces stress as if you fly with 1 battery every day and fast charge it to get back up in the air ASAP right?
      but good point for sure! subbed to your channel!🙌

    • @cloudpandarism2627
      @cloudpandarism2627  Рік тому +4

      oh and i wanna show whats possible. alot people say they dont like flying/charging times. having 2 or 3 packs and a charger on your field with lets say a tesla this should not be anbodys concern anymore. yes i agree this is not your 5 hours cross country unit but its also not meant to be one. this is a lightweight smooth and very quiet paramotor for a relaxing flight after work. no gasoline or smell /oil keruffle in car anymore. just take it out from trunk and have a chilled evening flight.

    • @iKenFlyPPG
      @iKenFlyPPG Рік тому +1

      @@cloudpandarism2627 Like electric cars, it has its application. I often fly with buddies and we always do 1.5 to 2 hr flights. Looking at gaggle stats browsing public flights, Id say the majority are under 1 hr, more like 30 min. Seems like a lot of people would be happy with ePPG.
      For the 10C charge in a commercially available battery I think those are inflated quite a bit. I've been a battery test engineer for a few years working with automotive stuff, they don't go past 1C. The goal here is to meet life cycle requirements, so part of this is reducing C rates and closing the voltage window, not charging to 4.2V to start it's life.
      If you do the math with a Tesla, they're not going past 1C or not very of they do. Huge capacity makes up for high charge and discharge rates. Try to poke around your charger and see if you can force it to stop at ~4.10v, this way you can charge the battery and not worry about it. As the pack degrades, then open it up to 4.2 to get more out of it.

      @@Team.Louish i love to hear it. for pro pilots i think electric is a nice alternative to add a useful motor to their collection and take the gasoline units to fly crosscountry or longer flights overall. and have the electric unit inside car at all times for a relaxed after work or quick holiday flight where you not need to fiddle around with oil, gasoline and other messy stuff. made such a huge difference for me that i can have an engine inside my car all time without the smell and ready to go at any time. if i decide to fly somewhere i need drive 1-2 hours and i simply use the time i drive to charge battery full while going there. when i arrive i get 100% pack fresh from the charger. its perfect. some friends here have Tesla cars and they all gonna buy a unit from me when i finish the second smaller prototype and test it enough.
      for me personally electric is plenty of flight time since i never like to go up more than 30 or maybe maximum 40 min. i couldnt be more happy to never need touch gasoline PPG anymore. but of course everybody have different ideas how long they wanna fly. all fine for me! cheers°

      is in progress. right now the straps will melt in case of fire and battery drops. but i have a system which lets the pilot eject the battery at any time. good point! many people talk about that. also interesting to hear batteries are dangerous since gasoline is so much more flammable yet nobody talk about ejecting the tank. same goes for electric cars. if a tesla is on fire we see that in all news. statisticly every months hundreds of normal cars burn down but nobody talks about it anymore because we see it as normal. maybe it have something to do with batteries are fairly new tech and people like to justify in their minds that of course it must be more dangerous 😅

      @mountainblack Рік тому

      @@cloudpandarism2627 Thanks for sharing this insight! It's great to hear that you're actively addressing safety concerns in the design. The ability for the pilot to eject the battery in case of a fire is definitely a crucial safety feature.
      You make a valid point about the perception of battery safety compared to traditional fuel sources like gasoline. It's interesting how new technologies tend to get more attention when things go wrong, while established technologies with their own risks are often taken for granted.
      I guess it's human nature to be more cautious about what we're less familiar with, and it's also a testament to the rapid evolution of battery technology. It's good to see the discussion happening and the industry continually improving in terms of safety. 😅

      @@mountainblack ok here we go i am home now. yes i agree with every point you made. i trust these batteries with my life otherwise i would not fly. lipos just dont burst into flames for no reason. otherwise car manufacturer wouldnt build electric cars right? there are 3 reasons they could cause fire. short circuit, puncture and overcharging. last reason is out because we dont charge while flying. short circuit is possible if the ESC have a stroke and something terrible happens with the PCB. but i am using a good high quality ESC with fuses inside to prevent exactly that. puncture is possible if pilot crashes and fall backwards into metal poles but if that happens and metal sticks are inside your back i guess battery fire is not a big concern anymore. i tested the cells against impact by grabbing a stone and whack it as hard as i could. nothing.
      then i drove over it with my 2.5 ton car. nothing.
      then i out it in front of the tire and accelerate as hard as i could. again nothing.
      battery was fully charged at that point and didnt even swelled up after 10 min. as a last resort
      i put the battery on the street. drove 100 meter away with my car. went straight back and slammed on the brake as hard as possible while running ot over with one tire.
      and THAT finally made it smoke. but no fire. the cell was totally destroyed and smeared across the pavement. i remember lipos 10 years ago where you just needed to look at them funny and they went into thermal runaway 😂.
      so technically its possible to have a lipo fire mid air. just very unlikely...still possible though - thats the reason why i am developing a system to eject the battery. i doubt anybody will ever use it. but its a good way to calm pilots down who still dont trust new technology which is fine by me. now the straps are not fireproof for that reason. i thought about this alot and there is still risk because batteries swell up to double their size in case of fire. that means the space in between the frame could not be big enough. yes straps will melt but if cells swelling up to double the size and the entire pack get stuck? i am working on something which wont affect that problem and can still eject a battery mid air. if its done i will show it here.
      glad to talk with you about this. many people told me same issues but didnt want listen any of my solutions. it was always same result. lipo is baaaaad. dont fly. topic closed. 😂
      i am happy you listen and understand my point. i also like safety and dont want get fried while flying. thats what we always do. minimize risks for PPG.
