I liked the tonal shift that this series had. Raimi's series felt like a classic Hollywood style take on Spider-Man, with huge action set pieces, fun characters, and a story that only every took itself seriously when it needed to. Webb's series had a more grounded feeling to it. When you break it down, it felt like an indie movie, with a super-hero movie budget. Webb said that he had an obligation to make his own version of the character, and the world that he existed in, and I think he did a superb job at that. The story felt personal, and the action was great, but never too insane. It was a Peter Parker story through and through.

This is *exactly* how I feel about the film.
I really really adore the character arc given to Peter in this film, but that arc is kinda complete by the halfway point. When Peter finally adopts the moniker of Spider-Man, and stares at that mask in his room, the film crests, and after that it’s all just dealing with the villain plot as a formality.
It’s astonishing how much they shafted Conners, Ifans, the whole movie. And for what?

Another movie that is greatly improved by extra scenes is Batman Vs Superman: Ultimate Edition. In the theatrical cut, the plot was thin, the characters weren't fleshed out, and there was barely any motive for Batman and Superman to fight. When I first watched the theatrical cut, I was very disappointed and had lost all my faith in the story that they were trying to tell. However, upon watching the ultimate edition, my experience with the movie was much more positive. The extra 30 minutes were very crucial to the story and added a lot to the movie. While the theatrical cut was a 4/10, the ultimate edition was a solid 8/10. This just shows that studios have no idea about what needs to be added or cut from a movie to make it better. The simple solution would be to let the filmmakers decide what the final cut should look like.

Every once in a while, I watch a thing like this and realize the kids are gonna be alright. Thanks for this essay, it really gives me hope for the future.
This is why superheroes exist, and why we go back to them again and again. Their simple stories can contain so much of the human experience. The superhero, I feel, represents the warrior archetype in the broadest sense, taking on the metaphor of life as a battle to be fought. And I think this is a good metaphor for life, not despite its darker overtones, but because of them. It reminds us how close the dark side is, how easily we can become the shadow version of the warrior, just as Peter Parker does early in this film. Kurt Connors as the Lizard is a perfect representation of the monstrous shadow warrior, a perfect monument of muscle and power, except without humanity. The metaphor is so on the nose it's ridiculous, but that's what makes superhero stories so great. They're not trying to be subtle.
One of the things I didn't care for about Amazing Spider-Man is how hard it leaned into dark shots, dark shadows, and dark characters. I think it's safe to guess that it was conceived in the shadow of Batman Begins, trying to match the mood, the complex origin story, etc. Everyone could see that it was a Spider-Man film trying to be something else, rather then embracing what makes Spider-Man great. I'm not surprised to learn that the scenes that made it a true Spider-Man movie were deleted. Without them, the film's villain doesn't reflect Spider-Man, and so beating him doesn't show us the core of Spider-Man's character. He's just an obstacle to be overcome.
So what's the core of Spider-Man? I think you found it in this essay. He's a boy trying to become a man by taking on the burden of the world alone. Yet, like all of us, he's not quite strong enough to do it alone, and must rely on help of others. And that help comes because everyone can see how much he's done for them. So he represents the conflicted duality of self-reliance and mutual support that lies at the core of our social fabric. As you pointed out, the cranes scene was a pure, perfect Spider-Man moment that captures this transition from self-reliance to mutual support. It's like the scene in Spider-Man 2, when the people he saved on the subway car carry him to safety, or in Spider-Man 1, when the people he rescued from Green Goblin's no-win scenario distract Gobby, giving him a chance to save both them and MJ.
To be honest, I've always been more of a Batman fan. But Batman films have very few true Batman moments. Perhaps because it's hard to put one's finger on what makes a Batman moment. It's not just standing over the city with your cape flapping. It's not saying "I'm Batman," or even "I'm vengeance. I am the night." That's just the pose. Whatever it is, it seems to me the films haven't quite found it yet. While Sam Raimi knocked his portrait of Spider-Man out of the park by finding that duality within him. And Mark Webb clearly understood it too. And it's a shame he didn't get to fully express it.
It doesn't take a huge leap of logic to notice how many superhero films start off as real films, only degenerate into a listless parade of effects, stunts, contrived stakes, and empty triumphs. Wonder Woman is a perfect example, a film that lost track of its real story in the final act. And Marvel Studios seems to have abandoned their higher aims in order to churn out that formula. But I think it's better for us to look for what's good in films than what's bad, to see what's there rather than complain endlessly about what's not. We should draw a distinction between criticizing a film for not living up to its own intentions, and criticizing it for not living up to our expectations. After all, the last thing we really want is for every film to be exactly what we expect.

This video captures perfectly why I relate the most to Andrew and Marc Webb's Spider-Man. This spidey often gets criticise for its inaccuracies but it's kinda hypocritical of those who complain since the entire purpose of Spider-Man's character was that anyone can be Spider-Man (a hero).

(just a little rant) for as long as i can remember spider-man had been not only my favorite superhero, but my idol. i aspire to be as strong as him and courageous as he is. this movie was the first spider-man movie i saw in the theaters and i remember the audience and seeing people of all ages here to see one man. andrew is my spider-man, i tried to dress like him, style my hair the same, hell i even tried skating cuz of him. this movie means the world to me and after watching probably over 50 times i felt a connection between me and peter in this movie, and tbh if it wasn’t for this movie i don’t think my love for spider-man would be as big as it is now in my teens. this movie definitely has its flaws, what movie doesn’t? but in my eyes, this movie is my definitive spider-man movie.

I am definitely conflicted about the second movie, I see why people hate on it, but usually I hear the same arguments: two many villains (Witch is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard), two many plot points, confusing Gwen relationship drama, Captain Stacy ghost, and bad villains, but I find many great highs, like many emotional scenes, and great dialogue and suspense, and memorable and a stunning effects and fight scenes. The lows of this movie are big lows but the highs are so dang highs that is why I give The Amazing Spider-Man 2 a 6/10

Wasn't "we must be greater than what we suffer" in Gwen's graudation speech in TASM2? Makes me think Marc Webb wanted that to be the main thematic thesis of the series, as TASM2's deleted ending with Richard had him give Peter similar advice. "Don't [go on without Gwen,] take [the memory of her] with you."

The reason why the original trilogy and TASM1 were memorable, was because of the producer LAURA ZISKIN
It was because of her and her husband (the screenwriter Alvin Sargent) that the movies had depth
She was the only one capable to tell AVI ARAD when to back off
Unfortunately, she died in 2011, during the production of TASM1
Without her, there was no one to stop Arad from destroying the franchise
    Spiderman was nothing without her

The Amazing spiderman is one of my favorite movies personally out of the entire trilogy and I feel like The Amazing Spiderman had the best origin movie out of the lot. I love the tone and the realism of this movie. Peter feels like a complete human being he doesn't feel like a complete saint or this perfect superhero and because of that he is completely relatable to everyone. I also love the story of how they show Peter's process of grief to how he became spiderman. This movie also had the best combat out of the Spiderman movie. The problem I had was the fact that Conner's didn't feel like a fleshed out villain

Finally this movie gets some recognition. This is my second favorite liveaction spiderman movie (after no way home). The way it handles grief is.... well amazing. The scene when Peter pushes Flash against the scool lockers gives me chills. Also Uncle's Ben's last message is so heartbreaking.
Not to mention Andrew Gardfield's performance is outstanding throughout the film.
I also love the scene where Spiderman saves that kid inside the car hanging of the bridge. It's so simplistic and yet it represents Spiderman's heroism at it best.
This movie is great, and i never understood why people hate it so much.

ever since as a kid, I always loved this interpretation of the character, whether I have people who are conflicted about why I love it for what it is. It still does bother me why so many people downplay the future interpretations of said character claiming how “tobey is the best of all” don’t get me wrong, tobey was really fun to be around during the raimi trilogy, but I didn’t grow up with it or personally feel attached to it because of it’s different ideals.
Andrew Garfield’s spiderman is one I relate too so personally, a spiderman who was cut off from a potential future because others figured that he wasn’t good enough nor was he, enough. a character who had people who were willing to throw him under the bus for their personal needs. To then eventually get back at those people for those said things because he became, powerful. Not smarter, but Superior. To me, every deleted scene from both the films, explain an almost..alternate outcome, imagine yourself making a choice, you made that choice, but now you imagine what could’ve been from the other choice you didn’t make. That one thought you get in your head, that “What, If?” what if we had a directors cut, what if we had the full film completed? It really just shows how much they held back with these films, they were scared to EXPRESS themselves. which is why I love this spiderman, a spiderman I could truly relate to because of the actions they did to this spiderman. Connors too is also a compelling character, a man who wishes the same for every man and woman to be equal. It’s what I want too, but the world is just too different to accept IDEAS. It’s literally impossible. the best thing you said was how you see a movie that failed, but still TRIED. I cannot tell you how many goosebumps clicked when I heard that, when I heard that I felt understood. My parents are pretty harsh on me because they expect the BEST of me, but when the best of me isn’t there because I can’t be that said person, I face a consequence, I face insufferable regret. man, when you said the story isn’t about resolution, but acceptance or when someone feels a connection to you but you don’t, how can they be wrong? truly goes to show that we’re all different, whether you like it or not? We can’t follow what they want us to be. We’re not like what they imagine inside their heads, an illusion is a difference to reality. ACCEPT the fact that they weren’t this person you wished they were, and embrace the new outcome.
if you read all of this, take some orange juice, whilst you’re at it, take some water too.

I loved this film back then when premieres and I wasn't a little boy, I was a full grown ass man and I loved..........and then I watched again.....loved, and again....LOVED and recently after finishing No Way Home, I dare to watch it AGAIN.......................................and I not only still loved, I ADORE this film.......is perfect, hell no, it wasn't perfect not even the first time I saw it, but I still loved it, yes I know the delete scenes (BTW my favorite missing scene is the Curt Connors scene with his son), that is a tragedy Sony force on Marc Webb to do this (also in TASM2), but even so, I still think the film is good, what is great about this film is STILL THERE, Peter and Gwen, Uncle Ben and Aunt May, chief Stacy and his sacrifice, those bonding scenes between Peter and Curt, the arc of FLASH and PETER, Andrew becoming the best Spiderman with his quips and all sarcasm he have in the comics, the best Stan Lee Cameo, my favorites spider swings around the city, the beautiful cinematography, dat ending with Ben message.....the good of this film ECLIPSE all the flaws, and I will NEVER UNDERSTAND why people hate this film.....is the popular mentality of if is not what I used to like, then I hate it, if is not cool and POPULAR then I hate it, even if I really don't.....is just the popular opinion that is accepted, majority thinks this film is bad because is not SAM RAIMI or TOBEY MAGUIRE or not part of the mega popular MCU, so even people who probably never watched these films, assume was GOSPEL to hate these movies, when in reality are GOOD MOVIES (yes I include TASM2 on that), I hope now people look back and see this and not assume what others say as gospel and seal in stone. Marc Webb did a fantastic job and I hope one day he see HIS CUT of both TASM films, his vision not SONY'S mandates cuts to shorted those films, if there have ever been a fanbase demanding a director's cut that truly deserved that cut....is THIS FANBASE the people who love TASM as they are and support both Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield through the years no matter what haters said. I will love to see a finish version of this film with all the scenes deleted added back (at least the important ones there is a few that can stay out) specially these ones you talk about here. These films in my opinion are better than even the first 2 MCU Spiderman films (Homecoming and Far From Home), are more in tone with what Peter's stories are, and I not hating on Tom films, they all are good and okay stories on their own, but just not SPIDERMAN STORIES not in the traditional way both Sam Raimi and Marc Webb approaches their Spidermen films, I will always defend these films and I hope more people see it now, that these 2 Marc Webb films as FLAWED AS THEY ARE......are good movies.
