“While we were touring in Northern California, we were inspired by the beautiful sunset on the hills and vineyards, and so we walked to a field nearby and began to play “Buffalo Gals.” Maggie’s cousin, Danielle Dixon, captured it live on an iPhone for us. This tune and so many other great tunes like it have been singing in our heads ever since we finished teaching violin at the O’Connor Method String Camp.” - Kate Lee and Maggie of the Mark O’Connor Band

The song “Buffalo Gals” was written by John Hodges in 1844 and refers to the women who lived in the canal district in Buffalo NY. By the 1880’s, it was said that there were as many as 400 women “of easy virtue” (prostitutes) working in the Canal Street area of the City. Included in the district were 93 saloons, 15 concert-hall dives, and hundreds of dance-hall girls. The street was called “the wickedest street in the world”.
maybe.
@Alondra O "She said Come on over, there's no one home. I went over, there was no one home!" - Rodney Dangerfield.
Actually it was originally written as Lubly 'Fan by Hodges. Buffalo Gals in an adaptation.
I think I was happier not knowing the history behind this song. We used to sing this in grade school music classes. Another childhood memory besmirched.
That's cool. I did not know that.
Beautiful music!
I come back to this vid whenever I'm feeling low (like now). Thanks again, ladies!

Beautiful....
You guys are so good
This song is amazing and honestly I can listen to this version all day. I think it was adapted from the 1944 song Dance with a Dolly which has basically the same rhythm and parts.
This song is from the 1800s, it's a song that minstrel show performers sang in the streets of the town they were going to perform in to advertise their show or something.
@@shekakargbo7961 Very nice
It seems I once read that it goes back to the days of the Erie Canal, written presumably by canal workers, about the young ladies of Buffalo, NY, near the end of the canal.
@@lazylili3699 I agree and I was just giving an example of another song
