best video ever. i mean it's not easy just read or memorize every single word about family members. but this video helps a lot. not only for its well explained and described graphic buy also for its examples. thank u so much. so excited to find a really fantastic lesson.
Thanks for your feedback. In facts, it takes us about two weeks to finish this video about Chinese family tree in a clear way. Please share it to let more Chinese learners know. Thank you!
wow! just started learning chinese this year and needed to revise family members. i was only expecting really simple, but goes into full detail, which is really helpful. it is really complicated though, so i wrote it all down so i don't have to keep watching the video on loop. thank you so much for putting this out there! ♥♥♥

why is it so complicated for no reason ? and i thought having a different word for uncle and aunt in the father's side or mother's in arabic was complicated enough now we have this ... this- anyway that was a great video , i will wipe my tears and start memorising this !
So what if there's more than one 表妹? Like what if I'm the eldest in the family and there are 4+ 表妹 (from different uncles and aunts), how do I differenciate between them? 大表妹,二表妹,三表妹..? But how to differenciate between uncle's daughters and aunt's daughters? Or do I just call all of them 表妹?
Thanks for your comments, and your Chinese is excellent. In China, there are a bit regional differences in appellation, however, in this video, we just summarized the most commonly and simply used appellation in Mandarin Chinese.
Thank you so much for this lesson, so good and organized, so can I ask if there a sibling either from the father or mother side only how to call him or her?
I’m so greatful for this informative video, but how should I address my Jie Fu’s parents, is there a title for that? What is my Jie Jie’s children called? Because I have a Ge Ge and I’m glad to know their children is my zhi zi and zhi nu
We call our in-laws family Qǐng Jià 请假, but when calling your Jie Fu's parents please refrain from calling your Jie Fu's parents by their first name since they are still a generation above you, it can be quite controversial, so the appropriate term would be uncle in-law or aunty in-law, depending on how close are you to them. In some cases I've heard others addressing theirs 'Sir', 'Madam' or 'Mr', 'Mrs'. But I do know there is a proper title for them. Afterall the chinese had a history span of 5000 years and running, so what haven't they not invented? :)
Hello, To address your Jie Fu’s father 姐夫的爸爸 (of similar age to your father), you can call shūshu (叔叔)or his family + shūshu, E.g. Wang shūshu 王叔叔. To address your Jie Fu’s mother 姐夫的妈妈 (of similar age to your mother), you can call her āyí (阿姨)or her family + āyí , E.g. Lee āyí 李阿姨. To call your Jie Jie’s children 姐姐的孩子, you can call them wàizhí'ér外侄儿 ( for boys) or wàizhínǚ外侄女 (for girls). Hope this will help you.
外侄儿 wàizhí'ér and 侄女 wàizhínǚ sounds about right! My Jie Fu's father 姐夫的爸爸 E.g. Zhou shūshu 朱叔叔 or Jie Fu's mother 姐夫的妈妈 E.g. Zhou āyi 朱阿姨 can work too. Thanks! ^_^
I wished that I could simplify by calling family members as uncle, aunt... and do not care whether he/she is from my mom side or my father side. For cousins just simply call them " hey brother, hey sister.

6:11 你媽媽的姐姐是你姨媽 你媽媽的妹妹是你阿姨。

2:44 你的爸爸的姐姐叫姑媽
你的爸爸的妹妹叫姑姑
姑妈 (formal) = 姑姑(informal)

Why chinese use this while they had one child only
Now one-child policy in China is gone.
