I'm not particularly an expert on Plymouth but most of those old engines that set for a long time lose compression like that, if you put a couple of teaspoons of gear oil in each piston it should give you enough compression to start it up, once you do that and run it through a few heat cycles you should get your rings back and have compression again.

Chevy's in my experience either start straight up quite easily or they are hell on earth. Had a '65 C10 283 that sat for 30 years, started up after new points, rotor plugs and was great. Oh man, that growling starter brought back memories when I first started up my 58 Plymouth. I had this very similar situation, ran great and let it sit for months. No start. These don’t like sitting for long periods of time.
Marvel mystery oil down the holes, clean and relube the starter (helps get more rpm’s out of it) and dribble in 2 cycle mixed fuel down the carb for starting, any mix is fine. Straight gas will just wash out your cylinders.
Once it does run, try to get some heat cycles into it to help loosen/seal up the rings. Also might want to look into replacing that carb with the correct unit. The one currently in your car is off an early 1950’s Plymouth. It’ll work, but it’s not correct for the later model 230 flatty.

I’d throw in a new starter right off the bat. That old one sounds pretty tired. I’d love to see this one kept original as possible aside from some bodywork and paint. If the engine is salvageable? A potential rebuild, cleaning and a good rattle can job at the least.
Bringing that body back and maybe a respray of it’s original color would be amazing

Now we're talking! Finally a '58 Plymouth, the only classic american car I know quite well. Looking forward to watch that beauty come back to life. By the way: That's a 2dr Sedan, not a hardtop. It has a 2-speed powerflite automatic transmission, there was a 3-speed automatic available as well, called torqueflite + the basic 3-speed manual transmission. With that golden "V" in the grille she usually should be a 318cui V8 (or the V has been added at some point). Watch out, at some point she might even try to kill or hurt you...and I know what I'm talking about. Looks like she's a factory radio delete so at least you won't be surprised by a radio that will suddenly turn on and play music from the 50s. 😂 PS: Check out some of my older videos to see one of these. 😊

Thats a sweet find. For some reason the 2 dr sedans are harder to find than the hardtops. I remember a number of years back, Hotrod Magazine was trying to replicate one they had built back in the day as a racer or was it for the salt flats and as hard as they tried, they could only find hardtops. I dont know if they ever found a 2 dr post like yours or not, but they were trying to find a correct one that would eventually go into the Peterson Museum even after building a hardtop. If I remember right they were pretty much to the point of offering the bank account, the editors left arm, the authors first born, and the secretary for one.

I would recommend checking your points again and make sure they aren't fried. When you tried to shut down the engine and it kept running. That tells me that even when the car is not running and the ignition is in the off position, the ignition system "thinks" the key is in the on position and is constantly getting power up to the points (anytime the battery is connected). If this is true, then your brand new points are shot and you'll have no spark. Worth looking into! Good luck

It has that Christine face on it and as you show the front it seems to be looking back at you. Weird but true, and amazing how a novel about a similar car made these so popular. Install a 440 in it and keep her blue, and give her a name. You are good at everything mechanical, so she will look phenomenal when done. Not to mention that the metal side of things shouldn't be a big complicated job. It will be more about getting door cards, seats and other details.
