My way to work on a new random character is like this: 1. choose a aesthetic/style/ theme 2. Find inspiration for the theme (ect) on the internet 3. With a chosen style and mood board I want to go, make like 3-5 designs of different ways to interpreted the theme. 4. Draw a character based of all the parts you liked and fit together. (Special colour pallet included) 5. Choose what I like and put a fully character together. Also wile drawing, think of how the character acts and write it down. What are their perks? What is their personality? What kind of back story could they have that fits with their appearance? (Ect) 6. Make the world around the character (not necessary! Random characters are cool) Its pretty much like your way (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧
"If you have ever felt like your character is boring, generic or lifeless..." *Me, who has done nothing but anime-styled drawings since middle school and is now regretting never taking actual anatomy, shape and color theory or aesthetics classes until now:* Sounds like the video for me!
Thank you so much! Your tutorials are very helpful! I'm struggling with character design... The truth is I can barely drawing and still trying to improve my drawing skills, while I've never considered to write down a story for my characters. Your example about the candle is so good... very impressive! It let me think about my own style.
What helps me the most is giving each character a story. Even the generic towns folk person. Why does this guy have a scar? Was is battle or how about a mishap in the black smith or is he just clumsy and fell into a door knob. Lol. Once the story develops, the appearance becomes more clear to me
You artistry and ability to explain something so clearly are truly so amazing. Your videos are so professional, and make me want to pick up my pencil and draw. Thank you!
Thank you for the discussion on references. My teacher belittled me for using a reference pic of a friend. Then of course at the end of a year of "just paint what's in your head" he pulls out a pic of himself and proceeds to paint himself to show us all that he was such a great painter. That was my first and last painting class.

A really great content and channel. I dont consider myself an artist but I love to try and draw charachters. A request maybe to analyse some of the artist styles and try to mimic it. I really love Max grecke style and I would love really to see your take on it. Keep it up.
Thank you very much AJ. I can imagine, proportions are hard to nail. I love that idea, I'm also a big fan of Grecke, Sounds like a lot of fun to try a video like that. Thank you for the recommendation!
Love the tips! :) i just subscribed. I've been drawing characters for a while, but i seem to strugle on how to give them this final look, that you gave the cave man for example. The way you rendered the final image was amazing! and the way you handle the colors
Hello Moi, thank you for the comment and for the subscribe! Yes, definitely that is a good day to improve in colors. Painting from life is another one. Just making little life studies fills your head 😊
I loved this video, many other videos about character design focus too much on visual guidelines like the shape and color palette, and while those tips are useful on their own way, they are incredibly subjective and not a must know for character design at all (plenty of famous characters dont have unique shapes or silhouettes and still are iconic and for all purposes well done). Instead you go straight up at the root of character design, with all subjective tips aside you go into what it means to create a character. My favorite part is also making a drawing that represents the character in one image!
