Another brilliantly articulated bunch of tips and tricks mate. And it hasn't gone unnoticed that every Tech Tips intro is different and relevant to the subject. It's little details like this that make your videos stand head and shoulders above the rest. Fantastic work :)
Thanks Mark! I think that's probably the consensus! :) Hey, I read your comment on the little mini doc also brother but think it's disappeared before I got to reply. Much love to you mate, and awesome to see you've created your own journey and amazing success with music even though it's been a really different road to get there!
Also on a side note I’ve worked out a way to get 4 mono loops out of the Ditto X4 using 2 AB footswitches and one ABY Pedal. It’s quite tricky to remember all the foot presses but lots of loop possibilities. May get around to doing a video soon.
For RC300 users, the all start/stop pedal allows you to use the same technique for playing a chord for a one bar break. Another good thing I do is leave a guitar riff loop playing but drop out my rhythm sections and guitar chord sections but play the guitar chord with a 1 strum per bar technique to give some nice dynamic range to the song
@@davidshanhun Thanks mate. On a separate note, what do you use to do your videos? Go Pro? And how do you edit them so you can see the picture in picture of your loop pedal? It's eluding me trying to find something simple to use to do the same! 😁😁
@@AidanMooreacoustic I have a canon 6d that I bought when I decided I wanted to create videos and film a whole lot more. the picture in picture was shot on my cellphone, and I edit everything in final cut, so that's how I did the picture in picture. just a case of matching the timing of the two videos up in final cut when I edit them together, so you'll need some software for video editing, but I expect pretty much any editing software will allow you to do it.
do you have something you were editing on already? final cut and premiere pro are the main two 'go to's' for editing, although there are heaps of other programs as well.
F-N outstanding, mate. Learned so much from this video and John’s song. Song sounds simple but it has so many behind the scene components and is really a subtle masterpiece. Thanks!
David Shanhun And you are so laid back and crazy talented on guitar and looper. Im learning my new Boss RC-300 and OC-3. No fade like your Ditto X4. BTW, JM’s 7 min i guess i just feel like solo portrait video is pretty cool too. And you should do a video for Love on the Weekend and Heartbreak Warfare. Cheers from USA:NC
@@nicholasinnorthcarolina1918 Thank you mate! No fade when I use the Voicelive 3 for me either haha - just nice to have the option when I use the ditto though! Oooh I'll have to check out the JM vid you mentioned. Off to a show now bud but happy jamming and feel free to reach out anytime if you think I can help with anything!
Never heard this song. Watched this video. Checked original song. Came back to this version cause it is better than original. ))) Many thanks for this !
love everything you've share bro... i just learning to do looping about couple days ago (i use BOSS VE-8) and your video help me alot & give more knowledge how to be a good looper player... Cheers from Bali bro 🍻🍻🍻🙏
Hi David, thank you for your great videos. One question please: Is there a `Hold`-function in the Boss RC-300 ? Maybe with the `Loops FX`? I couldn't find it but maybe you know `cause you were playing with the Boss RC-300 too I think. Or maybe some other viewer knows. Best, Tom
Wait, what, standard tuning! lol Thanks for these videos and showing how the Ditto x 4 works as I'm trying to figure mine out. I'm very grateful for you sharing your knowledge and wonderful talent. Thanks to you I can't get "Englishman in New York" out of my head; I just finished watching a video with Sting and Shaggy singing it. lol Cheers!
I think one of the best loop players by far is Mike Love. Maybe not everyone is into reggae music, but his live performances are never boring or feel repetitive.
Thanks :) I really enjoy the creativity of making video content ay! Like an odd jigsaw puzzle of footage captured versus story and info making sense and being useful as well haha!
@@davidhurrell9930 ah. I took his skills from the track and applied them to looping (since that track of his is built from a loop). He talks about it more here on the John Mayer Making of New Light IGTV vid - ua-cam.com/video/u03DZEaSewM/v-deo.html
yeah it's pretty neat eh? Sadly no - there's no loop fx on the the Voicelive 3. The closest I can get is stopping the loop and playing and holding the chord live, (or leaving just the rhythm loop going and playing the chord live, then kicking both loops back in for the next section).
A really good explanation Dave. My Digitech Jamman looper has a new lease of life as a result. Thanks for the inspiration. Just wondering whether you think John Mayer’s infectious groove sounds better with augmented G7+ and C7+ chords to create a jazzy feel?
Mostly because it was in my Amp case at the time, and then I do like the little options of fx that it has - the fade out at the end and the 'hold' option over that Gmaj7 chord. The VL3 doesn't have these little options, although I'm still using the VL3 for my shows rather than the ditto at this point.
@@davidshanhun ah yes, Thanks for explaining. I'm surprised that TC - Helicon couldn't put in an FX option in the uMOD area on the VL3. Seems it could be another FX option to use, and the user could just buttonmap it how they like.
that would be superb! I think the ditto came out after the VL3, so perhaps it was something they weren't doing at the time. I look forward to the next creation that they come up with though! :)
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos and tutorials! You have inspired me at my age to add some looping songs to my show and need some advice! Is it cool to perform wearing headphones as opposed to in -ear buds? I have noticed a significant difference in the quality and my confidence level with headphones. I have also used Shure E215 IEM but I don't get the bass and warmth as I do with headphones. Is it kosher to perform wearing headphones?
Thanks so much! I think you can really do what you want... however in saying that, I think you'll find some places or people have some objection to headphones - that's just my perception of places here in New Zealand and not necessarily true just my thoughts! I totally get what you're saying though - I have cheap in ears, and they have nothing compared with full headphones. I would simply do gigs with your full headphones and see what feedback you get from the venue and if you keep getting booked! If so then all is good. Much more a fan of trying things and seeing what response I get before just not ever doing it haha! Hope that helps!
I love the DittoX4. It's just so simple and packs in so many functions! I understand that people have problems with it being glitchy or whatever, but I guess I got a good unit :)
heya - full gear list is on this page with a link to the Takamine's details. I have no idea of nut width so hopefully it's in the details on the page! 🤷♂️. davidshanhun.com/live-looping-gear-list/.
You explain very well and it's fun to watch you.!!! But, I did not understand the chors in the video. Can you please repeat and write to me? Thank you !
John Mayer is good, you are better because you made music with just a good amp and a 160 $ looper pedal. I'd rather seeing you apply all this into another song if it's possible? My John Mayer 's favorite one is «Still feel like your man ( Ah! three different parts, might be impossible with the ditto) But we never know, you suprise me every day! 👍❤🙌
aww thanks Dov! :) That's a great John Mayer tune! Might be fun to play with and yes, will be great to put this same/similar info into a different loop song.
Totally! Just some ideas that you can either implement to make shows more interesting, or totally ignore if it's not something you want to add to your shows! :)
If you simply loop something and then play live over it, the constantly running loop gets monotonous. That's not a problem if you're just playing at home because you have only yourself to please and you're having a good time playing your solos or whatever, but if you're playing in public a constant, unchanging loop gets boring for your audience. These tips and tricks are great ways to break the monotony and sound ten times more interesting!
You undoubtedly have it in you to seek originality and maybe improve the song. And, of course, the original songwriter will commonly change their songs to avoid just another stale performance.
not sure quite what you mean by this comment Mark...? This video is about looping with a loop pedal - and some of the ways you can use John Mayer's songwriting skills to incorporate into your looping. Hope you got some value from it all the same 😊🤷♂️
