think about it. Take it anywhere, little to no maintenance. When wwIII happens you can always pull out your harmonica and set that oppressed mood. yeh think about it
That's what I did I learnt to play guitar when I was 14 when I was 16 I was pretty good but to join my older brothers band I had to have better gear so he was just like fuck it play the harmonica so I spent five years making random noises with a harmonica and i now play the guitar for the band and harmonica
I saw them play 5years ago, I thought Mick Mars was going to drop dead at any moment, poor guy has some degenerative health problems , incredible guitarist
Thank you paul I just built my first pedal board using a pedal train pro I did everything you said and it came out perfect !!!!!!!!! You saved me alot of trial and error stress and headache !!!!!! I put my pedal board together in one night and it made me happy thanks again paul you the man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The price of pedal boards is a joke, even Pedaltrain. Far too expensive for what they are. Build your own with strong wood that's light. They sure know how to suck the money out of guitarists. Power to the people n all that jazz. This is a good demo, but not a cheap option. You can order the power supply from China for £20 (£35 UK) and make you own board, all for a fraction of the price. Update: From more experience I reckon it would be better to invest in a decent (true isolated) power supply. Too much noise is created from the cheaper one's.
Argos 'duck board' from their bathroom section ( £9.99 ) makes for a good pedal board. Add 1 or two power supplies and a strip of velcro and you're good to go.
Im using a piece of particle board i got off the side of the road and screwed some other chunks of wood under the top to slant it. works great. plus i made a case for it but that was a bit more expensive. DIY or Die
Here's a cool tip for all interested: Use a distortion pedal with a harmony pedal. Be sure the distortion pedal is patched in closer to the guitar than the harmony one. Cool, heavy sound.
Another pretty good thought is to use some masking tape on the back of the pedal so that after you attach the Velcro it will be easy to take off without making the back of your pedals all gooey
One piece of advice: rather than put the velcro on immediately, initially set your pedalboard up with no velcro so that you can experiment with the ordering and placement of the pedals more easily and without beginning to wear out your velcro. You will need to figure out what order gives you the desired the sound and what is the easiest placement for you to work with your feet. You should take some time messing around before you put the velcro on. There are plenty of books and articles about pedalboard order (I especially liked Dave Hunter's book "Guitar Effects Pedals" to learn about different pedals and ordering on your pedalboard), but in the end each rig's components will interact differently with each other and each guitarist will have a particular idea of what sound they are going for, so experimenting with the order will be important. Also, you have to figure out which pedals you will need to turn on/off in the middle of songs as well -- they should be in the front as much as possible, regardless of wiring order). If you leave the velcro off, you can easily move stuff around. I always keep some blank pedalboards around so that I can experiment before I actually make a gig pedalboard for a particular purpose -- that's when you are going to need your velcro.
It's just a matter of layout. You can actually do that (tuner -> wah) but I keep it the other way since I like having Cry Baby + Whammy together as they both have expression pedals.
If anyone is looking into buying pedalboards then i recommend the Furman SPB-8. It has LOTS of room, its powered (will run most pedals with built-in power, up to 8 at a time), has three AC outlets for 12 and 18 volt pedals, has ins/outs so you can easily plug into your effects loop (take it to your gig, plug in 4 cables, and your rig is done) AND it has a built-in Furman Power Conditioner that comes in handy at the bar gig with questionable electricity/outlets/grounding. Its a little older so on the used market you can get one for 70-80. I got one from Ryan the violinist from Blue October for helping to setup his pedalboard, and I love it.
One thing I just figured out with my board is putting the waw first then the buffer then the Big muff to the compressor, this made it finally sound really great and work together well. Putting the volume pedal AFTER the overdrives and EQ allowed me to not need a noise reduction pedal. So I sold off my ISP. The drives seem to like a full signal going in to them and it is so much less noisy cutting their output signal afterwards.
When you started putting all the pedals together, at first it looked little bit random to me, but when you played it all made sense. Great tone! You know stuff man. Good job!
+2inchfromtheground i bet they outsourced the labor and materials, and it cost about $10 to make. You don't have to explain cost of doing business, I'm a business owner myself. what I mean is why pay $120 for nothing more than a piece of metal, when you can buy a self-powered, padded, cable organizing, durable carry case for $150 (I paid $80 for mine used) and I could fabricate a completely custom rail system that blows the train away for about $30 in materials.
Nothing but great results from mine. And I'm running 15 pedals, with a small group of analogs daisy-chained. No signal or problematic noise at all.. I use the Pro (CS 12) version. Maybe there were things wrong with yours.
A sales presentation for velcro-type boards and products.. Others use zip ties, clamps, or hardware that adapts pedals to "bolt down" schemes. Materials are available that are much cheaper than formed metal products, and you can save big bucks by exploring options. Anyone can get ripped off.
Velcro is too expensive for me. I prefer to drill my own holes in a plain piece of elevated wood, then use zip ties to hold the pedals in place. Glue, clamps...even binder clips....are deployed to tidy up the wires.
If your onespot is noisy, it just means you have exceeded the maximum power draw in Ma. If u use any digitech pedals, they draw a ton of power. I use two onespots and it eliminated the noise that only one produced. Use ur heads guys and gals. If the max milliamps of the onespot is 1500ma and one delay pedal draws 1300, adding two more pedals will make a high pitched skweeeel sound. Just use more than one.
I think a looper should always be at the end of the signal chain because it records what you play. E.g you wouldn't put a recording interface in the middle of your signal chain.
The way I was taught, which might be totally wrong, is Guitar>Tuner>compressor>misc. pedals>Volume(/wah)pedal>noisegate>amp Whatever you do tuners and compressors should come first and volume pedals and noisegates last. IMO.
ArtfulDawdger Why would you put the tuner first? If you are going to put it in your signal chain then put it later (effects loop) so it will mute your guitar. If you have it before overdrive and distortion pedals you will still get audible noise from those pedals. I like to put it right before delay and reverb (using effects loop so it will be after amp distortion in the chain) so that you will still hear trails after your tuning. Honestly I'd rather have it on a tuner out or something like that (removing it from the signal chain) to keep it from messing with my tone. Delay and reverb belong last in the chain, after gates as well. I have always found that wah pedals belong BEFORE distortion or overdrive, but not necessarily volume pedals.
yeah but if you put the tuner first then you get the clearest signal so you get the best tuning, but i guess it depends on priority, better tuning or slight hum?
James Rogers You know I never thought about it picking up a better signal for more precise tuning, I'll have to look in on that! Maybe the ideal setup would be and aux setup (like an A/B box or a stereo out your not using) to get the best of both. I use a Snark pedal tuner that is one of the last in the chain and I have no problems with it picking up the signal for tuning but now I'm gonna try it before to see if it will pick it up better.
FreedomForever Yeah, I was always taught to put it first for a clean signal, but that's a great idea using it for a mute. I love my volume pedal for muting though so I wouldn't really need anything else. It actually a Morley combination wah/volume which is why I put my wah so far down the chain... because I have to! (its a bummer if you are 'right-footed' too) But I kindof like the wah so far down because it sounds good when I run other effects through it. But a tuner out or an AB/ABY setup would be the tits. Someday I will get a sick ass strobe tuner but I have about 1000 more bits of gear to get first :p
It happens. Mostly if you leave the cables as a complete mess underneath the pedalboard. If you're in a hurry and pull the board out of the bag/case and a cable decides to get stuck with anything, it will loose.
Great video, covered all the basics. I just finished building my 1st pedal board out of 3/4 inch plywood 10 in. x 24 in. with 2 xtra pieces of plywood screwed to 2 ends to raise the long end of the back of the board. Cost = zero. I then added 2 in. strips of velcro to the board and cut pieces of velcro and attached them to the back of pedals. Cost = $10 on Amazon. Its all powered by Truetone One Spot combo pack cost = $30 on Amazon plus a 6 pack of cheap patch cables cost = about $10 on Amazon. My pedals in order from guitar are Jimi Hendrix JH-1 Wah, Mooer Auto Wah, Mooer Tender Octaver, Joyo Ultimate Overdrive, Joyo Vintage Overdrive, BBE Tremor, TC electronic Flashback delay. Pedal cost = about $400. Its awesome to just plug in one wire and everything is ready to go. Running it thru a Fender Blues limited Ed amp. I use a Snark clip on tuner. Its working great with no unwanted noise. I'm a happy camper/guitarist.
no noise gate or suppressor? Thats the #1 pedal necessary for playing with a chain as full as that under real-life circumstances. In that studio you could get away with it, but in a club having 20 pedals and no way to kill the noise would never work.
depends on what you like to boost. Sometimes OD`s and Distortions can't handle a very high input Signal. If the boost is only there to give a volume boost for solos or to help passing a long cable to the amp the shown order ist completely alright. :-)
Ma Rio If the boost is put BEFORE, it will add a little gain and grit along with volume to the OD right? After the OD and distortion it should just bump volume correct?
Thor Bear I think it's all relative on what pedals you use. I use a clean boast followed by different gain stages, then an equalizer to touch up the parameters and if I want use another boost pedal and it works for my front of amp chain.
Nathan Savage Thanks dude! I appreciate the response. BTW- I have a TC mini Spark boost, then a Fulltone OCD followed by a Carl Martin Plexi Tone or a Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe. My understanding is that if the boost comes before the OD, it'll add some grit as well as volume. If set up AFTER the OD and distortion, it'll just add volume. This sound correct?
The chain of effects must have been just right on that big board. when he played through it and had a ton of them on at the same time, it didnt sound overwhelming. the signal still sounded clear and not crowded. nice!
Just curious. With the smaller pedal board set up, why isn't the Uni Vibe after the distortions? It's essentially a chorus pedal right? And in the first larger set up you said to put the chorus after distortion ;X
makesoundsnotlove yess people like to fight alot about where modulation should be in the chain, this is most likely for showcasing that you can use it in both places, according to your personal taste :D
makesoundsnotlove yess univibe sounds better when put in front of distortions/fuzzes. you'll hear the swirls better when it's in front. try it for yourself.
Strymon Onai and Zuma are the best power suplies out there now.I ordered one Ojai 5 inputs of 9V/500Ma can power my 18 pedals all which are 9v hungry with daisy chains. And it just looks amazing.
I would use a patchbay on my pedalboard for the pedals that are going into the front of the amp, and the pedals that are going through the effects loop.
Correct title should be Watch me screw up building pedalboard. Anytime you build the cables you chance screwing up. In long run they come apart and make noise on a board. Buy good quality cables and a good pwr supply. Save problems for learning how to play guitar!
What about the pedals that are meant to go into the FX loop? Phaser, Chorus, Tremolo etc? Don't they need to be on a separate board/different cables? (Sorry if this is a obvious question, I'm still new to the idea of the FX loop and pedals)
I still don't get how your supposed to know which pedals should hook up to which?? Why does the order even matter??? I thought you just basically hooked them all up, connected power to them and then that's it??
7Earthsky Understandable. You still want to at least have some concept of the order. For example you don't wanna put your delay before the distortion, because then you would be distorting your delay etc.
7Earthsky Generally your wah is the first Pedal on your board. Tends to work well first. There is no real "right" way to do it however. Just general guidelines. Try out a few different combinations and see what YOU like the most
I personally would run the chorus, delays, echo, and other time based effects through the effect loop and the others like distortion, fuzz, volume, wah, into the front input. But thats just me
That's good if that's all you want/need. But I feel if you are going to call yourself a guitarist (a good one for that matter), you have to throw yourself into every aspect that is guitar. Be a scientist gone wild and experiment with everything style, every technique, every sound, every tuning, every setting, and every genre you can. Your journey should help you evolve as a guitarist and just playing either clean or overdriven/distorted doesn't cut it. If you don't like the way a chorus pedal sounds, then play it like you've never heard anybody else play it and make it into something you do like. That goes for all things in life. Experiment, Explore, and Evolve.
At minute 07:34 the guy explains about a medium size pedal board Can you please tell me what is the board he is using, I would like to order one for myself? Thanks in advanced
Trem after Reverb? pourquis? personally i prefer the sound of a trem being washed by the verb to create a larger sense of space over the idea of adding modulation effects to a verby signal. to each his own. My set up is guit into strymon optical comp/boost, sparkle drive, Mesa Toneburst and Boss GE-7 graphic EQ to volume pedal (tuner out of the volume pedal's tuner out (keeps the tuner out of the signal path)) then out of the volume pedal to the Mesa Lonestar Special. Effects loop carries the Mxr analog chorus and the strymon timeline. It's super simple with massive numbers of tonal options. The amp's channel switcher boost pedal sits in the pedal board as well!
Are you broke? Yes
Are you a thief? No

nikki sixx actually stole his (first i guess) bass, didn't know the difference between guitars and bass, thought that's a 6 stringer!
I really wanted to like this comment, but I can't fuck with that beautiful 666 like count.
Why am I watching this if I have only 1 pedal ?
I feel the same xD
+vova rasta I'm watching it and I only have one pedal... I plan on ordering 9 more with my pedal board tomorrow.
lol same here.
i feel you bro. :(
Same
I saw that dude from Mötley Crüe and it scared the shit out of me
+Curtis Same here dude XD
+Curtis I thought it was Hillary !!
I saw them play 5years ago, I thought Mick Mars was going to drop dead at any moment, poor guy has some degenerative health problems , incredible guitarist
SAME I JUMPED UP LMAO
holy shit! wtf was that?!?! it scared me too haha!!
Step 1: don't be broke.
Or just buy an integrated pedal board (eg Zoom).
Alexis Andrade-exactly
Haha! godo one
Goddammit I failed
IKR
Thank you paul I just built my first pedal board using a pedal train pro I did everything you said and it came out perfect !!!!!!!!! You saved me alot of trial and error stress and headache !!!!!! he looks like badger from breaking bad
I can't unseen that now. hard to watch the video now! lol
Fuck me, it's all I see now.
You're killing me 😂
haha that's hilarious
I was wondering why he looked familiar! lmao

Wait, I ordered a power supply for £7 and it took me £20 to build the board
Ufuk Çelik You ordered a 9v power adapter, you didn't buy an isolated power supply.

Agreed!
Yes!!!
You could also put the velcro on, and put pieces of paper on the pedalboard so there is no stick when laying out
@@MS-hj3ox I did similar but using a thin cloth. I was re-arranging the board completely to get some new pedals on.
Meanwhile, I have zero pedals.
If you play mostly clean or 60s-70s rock you need almost no pedals at all but in my case I need a chorus for clean it sounds to dry without it
+Miles Hodges Good, I use my guitar for Beatles nowadays.
I use amplitube but I really want real ones.
Get a Marshall MG30CFX. New amp + 5 effects. That's what I'm gonna get.
Harry Evans I have that amp. It's awesome!
why is badger from breaking bad teaching me how to build a pedal board???
This made my day
***** Side Job
***** Jesse we need to cook, omg im in willy wanks meth factory. take me down your river of meth
Best comment on here!!! 😂😂👌🏻👌🏻
If you drop a hooked pedal on carpet, you'll never get that shit off again.
Why the hell would you put a whammy before a tuner?
Actually, I do the same because the whammy has a dry output so the tuner gets the clean signal.
+Roberto Yanez Schmidt tuner has a dry output as well why not tuner -> wah?
It's just a matter of layout. You can actually do that (tuner -> wah) but I keep it the other way since I like having Cry Baby + Whammy together as they both have expression pedals.
Keep tuners away from raw guitar signal. ALWAYS. Use a buffer with an iso output sidechained off the main signal or just plug into it when you needa.
+Rick Feith Exactly. I personally use a modded vp junior volume pedal for that purpose.
Is this the Buzzfeed channel? Because it feels like it.
Super-Ultra all I know is that BuzzFeed has no talent m9 while this one has potential

I'm literally a bassist who's here to learn how to build up my pedalboard
Really liked this video, was so funny and educational
5:47 Mick scared the shit outta me!
For real wasnt expecting that
Same! It was like that scene in Mulholland Dr. behind the Winkie’s dumpster.
Sorry
Mick looks loke my Mother in law.. but with less make up.. lol. Really.
Zip ties or really any other cable tries are amazing as well, keeps your pedal board beautifully clean.
"Alright alright alright".
One thing I just figured out with my board is putting the waw first then the buffer then the Big muff to the compressor, this made it finally sound really great and work together well.

Tuner after the wah pedal? I thought tuners go first before every pedal. Reverb before the amp? Not in the loop?
+Spirituality1980 alot of people us a tuner as a buffer in the middle of the chain
daniel cullen Thank you!
+Spirituality1980 I have my wah being the last thing going to my amp.
I've always believed reverb and chorus do not go in front of the preamp.
When you started putting all the pedals together, at first it looked little bit random to me, but when you played it all made sense. Great tone! You know stuff man. Good job!
Why is the pedal train like $120? I wouldn' pay over $45.
+Charles Ayala It would be cheaper to by a pallet of wood and sand it down and paint it.
+Mnemosyne Gates I actually did that with some wood i found at home, the only thing i spent money on was black paint to make it fancy af
Its probably what ill do some time after Christmas tbh
+2inchfromtheground i bet they outsourced the labor and materials, and it cost about $10 to make. +Charles Ayala I bought some 3 mm steel-sheet and rubber feet. Problem=solved for a sixth of the cost.
Just added the Pitch Bay to my board, ended up starting a 30 minute long improv sesh with my band last night. Definitely a great choice
For any fledgling guitarists out there I implore you, please don't use a 1Spot. Your signal will become a persistent noisy mess.
ZiPolishHammer what should I use instead?
Nothing but great results from mine. And I'm running 15 pedals, with a small group of analogs daisy-chained. No signal or problematic noise at all.. I use the Pro (CS 12) version. Maybe there were things wrong with yours.

Of course! Here in Mexico the PT Junior goes for $200 with the softcase. They're nuts.
Gabo Palacios No it doesnt... It goes for around 140.
102.50 shipped for my pt-2. Thanks ebay

How about a quick video on what order you would have these pedals in cause I know that effects the sound.

where do you put the noise gate?
isnt it smarter to put the ditto at the end? Other wise the hole loop will get the last effects :)

My understanding is that if the boost comes before the OD, it'll add some grit as well as volume. If set up AFTER the OD and distortion, it'll just add volume. This sound correct?
Ma Rio Thanks man!
I don't even play guitar and this video helped me. lol Nice!
Hang on, let me get you a longer screw driver for those cables.
LOL!!! I thought the same thing.
The chain of effects must have been just right on that big board. when he played through it and had a ton of them on at the same time, it didnt sound overwhelming. the signal still sounded clear and not crowded. nice!
Damm if I had such rig I would be Playing my guitar 24/7
What's in the glowing box?!? Oh, there is my wallet, it's the one that says....
Should I put the phaser pedal before or after the fuzz pedal?
How do you know what order to connect the pedals in
This would have been a more interesting video.
You git gud
Nice vid Paul. That Washburn is gorgeous.
Just curious. With the smaller pedal board set up, why isn't the Uni Vibe after the distortions? It's essentially a chorus pedal right? And in the first larger set up you said to put the chorus after distortion ;X
Damn, that burn tho
makesoundsnotlove yess people like to fight alot about where modulation should be in the chain, this is most likely for showcasing that you can use it in both places, according to your personal taste :D
makesoundsnotlove yess univibe sounds better when put in front of distortions/fuzzes. you'll hear the swirls better when it's in front. try it for yourself.
Actually, a Uni-Vibe is more of a phaser effect.
I hope you're planning to go through a full demo of all those pedals, I really want to hear that Randall.
I though you said it wouldn't be boring??
David Wilson I thought it was pretty interesting :/
And just when I saw Mick Mars from Motley Crue, I HAD to hit the like like button!
"Let's build a pedal board!"
*Builds board
"Let's see if this thing works!"
*plays a completely different pedal board
Thankx for my deploma. I power everything daisychained from my Boss NS-2, LS-2, and TU-3. I could use some custom cables though.
according to "How to Build a Pedal Board" the first step is go buy a pedalboard.
Strymon Onai and Zuma are the best power suplies out there now.I ordered one Ojai 5 inputs of 9V/500Ma can power my 18 pedals all which are 9v hungry with daisy chains. And it just looks amazing.
Why not mount the fuel tank under the pedalboard? Doesn't make sense.
I always use my FX loop for time based effects.
"Daisy chaining is TOTALLY NOISE FREE!" hahahaha false.
5:48? Is that a "Ringwraith" from the "Lord of the Rings: Guitar World Edition?"
Oh man that guy that said ''i wouldn't do that'' scared the shit out of me :P
Why wouldn't the Looper go last?
You lost me when you actually called the OneSpot....noiseless...blatant marketing is terrible. LOL
GuitarPartho lloyd
Great stuff, Paul. I love your approach.
1:08 dude reminds me of Sid from Ice age anyone with me
Lmao
Yeah...but this Sid can rip on guitar!
I would use a patchbay on my pedalboard for the pedals that are going into the front of the amp, and the pedals that are going through the effects loop.
then theres me with a multi effects pedal lol
That "Terminal" pedal sounds unbelievebaly cool.
sorry....I thought the end result sound was .....bloody awful ..just sayin
His tone is so bad
+Bo Aleman spoiler alert is music is an opinion
Sorry....He was just showing that the board works ..just sayin
yeah... almost put me off pedals for life :(
Take three layers of wood horizontally and three vertically half the lenght of the horizontal ones. Glue or stapple them together, done👍
correct title should be: "how to assemble the pedals on the pedalboard"
yes, a tad pedantic.................
The order definitely matters. I would suggest googling and finding a typical pedal chain order.
I'll probably only have a wah, fuzz or distortion to begin with anyway.
7Earthsky Understandable. You still want to at least have some concept of the order. For example you don't wanna put your delay before the distortion, because then you would be distorting your delay etc.
So if i put a Wah before a distortion, will the wah work over the distortion when i'd want it or would i need to put that after a distortion pedal?
7Earthsky Generally your wah is the first Pedal on your board. Tends to work well first. There is no real "right" way to do it however. Just general guidelines. Try out a few different combinations and see what YOU like the most
That Pitch Bay pedal sounded sick! I'm more into metal but I may just have to pick one up for blues type of things.
axe fx if you have money, line 6 pod hd (500) if you don't
I personally would run the chorus, delays, echo, and other time based effects through the effect loop and the others like distortion, fuzz, volume, wah, into the front input. But thats just me
9:03 take it easy, Mr. Morello
i like how people are saying use "digital multi-effects unit." bruh, to some the sound of actual physical pedals is better. I LOVE IT. thanks :3
5:47 That dude scared the shit out of me.
Thank you for making this! I really appreciate it
I have large pedal board but only in my dream
Absol kick ass and well explained video. Thanks Paul
i've never had more than 3 pedals. tuner, overdrive, noise gate. done.
Good for you rockstar...
Why do you have a noise gate for on overdrive pedal, not even a high gain distortion.
i use overdrive as a boost on a 6505+. very noisy.
Makes sense
Last lines sound f**** great!!
how the fuck did they get mic mars?
Dalton Pritchard he needed money.
At minute 07:34 the guy explains about a medium size pedal board
Can you please tell me what is the board he is using, I would like to order one for myself?
Thanks in advanced
Yaron Nir It's a pedaltrain classic 2, can be found here.
www.pedaltrain.com/classic-2
he doesn´t play guitar, he plays pedals
I like that Paul doesn’t just lump all of his modulation pedals together after the drives.
OMG THE COMPLICATED BRITISH ONE IS KILLING ME 😂😂😂
Trem after Reverb? pourquis? personally i prefer the sound of a trem being washed by the verb to create a larger sense of space over the idea of adding modulation effects to a verby signal. to each his own.
How fucking hard is it to make a plank of wood?
Excellent video 👍
