One of my favorite arcade systems, looking forward to this. The fact that the games at the "bottom" of the list are still pretty amazing is a tribute to the quality of the system and its devs as a whole.
8:10 Wait, WHAT?! This isn't Japan. Warriors of Fate is Tenchi o Kurau II. It's the sequel to Dynasty Wars, both are based on a Japanese comic book version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Set in China. A thousand years before feudal Japan. It's literally 2D Dynasty Warriors. Same characters, though western translation gave them Mongol names for some reason.
I lived in Japan until 2010 and Tenchi wo Kurau 2 was at every old school arcade there. This is just my personal experience but it seemed to be the beat em up with the most longevity over there. To me it is the true sequel to final fight and my favourite beat em up.
Sad to see Three Wonders rated so low. The first game is a great expansion on the Ghouls n Ghosts gameplay with wonderful artwork and designs with fairy-tale atmosphere, the second game... okay, I've never completed it. But still, I think it should be a little higher...
Ramzes XIII I do too. The graphics alone make it worth playing, but it is also a lot of fun. Plus, it is similar in gameplay to stuff she loves, like Green Beret (I would actually say it is superior to that). Oh well, at least Kim’s taste is not overly predictable.
Yeah me too, I think in many of Kim's videos failing to note how fun games are in coop is kind of a let down since Mega Twins is a great game and a decent conversation on the Amiga as well.
It also combines platforming levels with shooter mechanic sections, allows you to choose the order you take at the beginning... From the footage it seems Kim just played two minutes of the default first level and gave up on it. What's odd about those comments to me is that you could easily say the same or worse about a lot of clunky old ugly floaty platformers that Kim raves about! But then we all have our own biases and nostalgia ;)
Strider has the best, and quite possibly the scariest attract mode ever in an arcade game. I used to think Strider must be the hardest game ever created, you see about 5-10 seconds of rock hard gameplay and then it's suddenly back to the title screen before you even got a chance to focus on what was going on. Also well before Sonic The Hedgehog, seeing Hiryu being able to run around the ceiling and spin around that satellite with the legendary words "NOBODY EVER HAS CLEARED THIS STAGE" blew my mind. Back when I was a young lad, I used to think that nobody in the world had cleared the stage EVER!
My first encounter with Strider Hiryu was with the japanese version, which somehow managed to sneak its way into a bar in northern Italy during the summer of 1989 (pirate board for sure). The fact that I couldn't understand a single word made it even more mysterious and charismatic. And man, those soundtracks... The fun fact is that I never dared to put a coin into it, it looked too damn hard, so I just watched older kids play it.
@DejaVoodooDoll Yeah, ten years after, when I finally got Strider at home thanks to MAME, I realized that it wasn't as hard as it seemed at first glance.
I had this same experience! Strider was at my nearest 7-11 and that visual of him running down the exploding slopes to the giant robotic monkey or rotating around the giant sphere followed by that ominous message saying no one had ever cleared this stage was downright intimidating! I would pass it by and just watch the opening and never play. I didn’t have the guts! The only other time I felt like that was the first time I saw the original mortal Kombat.
Hyper Fighting was the first SF to be based on predicting what the opponent would do instead of reacting to their moves. This is how all competitive fighting games operate now.
I disagree so much with the order but REALLY enjoyed the video and just watched it as a list of your favourites rather than the worst to best. I was looking for a game covering all CPS1 games and this was perfect thank you. Subscribed.
I'm getting sick and tired of people saying there are no original gaming videos on youtube because this is a perfect example of some great original content from a person that specializes in original gaming content. So many great memories playing a lot of great capcom arcade games in the early 90's and they really did an amazing job when it came to fighting games, beat'em up games, and shoot'em ups as well. I would love to see more videos like this looking at ranking the arcade games from a specific video game company from least favorite to most favorite. Another excellent video by the best radio voice in the youtube gaming sphere.
I remember going to Meadowhall Arcade and seeing a certain new Capcom arcade cab for the first time. "Hmmm...'Warriors of Faht-ay'...", I said, thoughtfully trying to dechipher how the last word could possibly be spelled. "Warriors of 'Fate', you absolute prick!", said my mate, ruthlessly responding to my complete brain fart of an effort.
I remember that arcade, went there for years. And I went to that arcade roughly at the same time, it was carpeted at the time and I saw the same machine you spoke of. I remember having a go on World Heroes 2. HATE how they pushed Namco out to make way for more food stalls, totally ruined that area of the center, they had something unique and wrecked it.
Mega twins is actually pretty good. Its one of those games that should have released on the saturn instead of the Genesis since the console was vastly more powerful with 2D graphics. If I could recommend it, I definitely would and preferably played on a CRT.
Me and my brother loved playing Cadillacs and Dinosaurs at the arcades. And SF 2: Champion Edition was the game that introduced me to Street Fighter series.
@7:58, despite the name is called the *warriors of fate*, it is actually a direct sequel to *dynasty wars*@2:44 and a retold of the same story of wars in china during the three kingdom period, and did not happen in japan
I'm really happy to see Strider, my favorite game of all time, being given much deserved love in this video. I totally agree that the Strider franchise needs more attention!
There's a lot of great memories here. Captain Commando, Strider, Final Fight all have a special place for me. CPS1 was a sweet spot for some supurb pixel art. Thanks Kim.
Capcom was one of the kings of stand up arcade cabinets back in those days. I still remember how intimidating it was to see the big kids hogging the Championship edition machines.
Kim, you are a legend. I have always said my 3 fav games ever in arcades are Outrun, Streetfighter 2 and Strider, to see 2 of the 3 at the top of your list is music to my ears.
I guess everybody has their own order of preference; mine would look very different to this (personally I never got on with Strider) but what a line-up... surely everyone agrees that this is one of the greatest arcade systems of all time. Even if my own personal favourite Capcom games are slightly older.
The old church I used to go to when I was a kid had an activity center next to it and had some old arcade games in it. The ones I played the most were Buster Bros and Time Pilot. Buster Bros in particular I still hold up very high on the list of puzzle games. But I would say that my top three are Strider, Street Fighter 2 Dash and U.N. Squadron. The latter is one of the finest STGs ever made.
Good to see Ken Sei Mogura on this list, a lot of people seem to ignore it like the CPS1 redemption games (Pokonyan! Balloon, Ganbare! Marine Kun) because they consider it a similar novelty product rather than a real game. I still hope to get the chance to play the cabinet one day after working with the owner of it to get the thing emulated as I imagine it's a very different experience in physical form. Guess you're saving MegaMan for the CPS2 list as it was released on both?
Willow was basically Lord of the Rings for the arcade...Magic Sword was an awesome one, I played the shit out of it in the arcade but it's a shame that we never got a 2 player console port.
Final Fight is may favourite CPS1 game, Caddillacs and Dinosaurs then followed by the Punisher. Strider and Ghouls and Ghosts feels very nostalgic to me as I discovered them in the arcades during the late 80's.
i love cps1. it was a shock to see two of my favorites 3wonders and magic sword with such a low rank. but i guess it’s just a matter of taste. waiting on your cps2 video.
What? Three wonders average? Dang gal...midnight wanderers was amazing! Chariot moderate granted and dont pull...ok fair point. But midnight wanderers has some of the most gorgous looking bosses of the period. Willow higher than this??? First time ive ever disagreed with the justice....unsubbed......then resubbed as forgiven due to noting carrier airwing - a fave of mine and severely under rated
there are few questionable entries in this list and some of the descriptions about the games from him didn't match the views of people actually lived though the 80-90's and played the arcade games with their pocket money. i think he just fired up mame and did a filter on cps1 games then made this list based on them after spending 5 mins on each game
I used to work at a collectables store and we had a Mercs machine since the store was not a busy place i played it ALOT i got good enuff to beat it with 1 credit
Willow is, IMO, one of the best jump and runs with 'adventure' elements, surpassed only by Super Wonderboy in Monsterland. And it was totally crowded by the folks in my arcade back in the day.... damn difficult tho...
Nice to see some love for Forgotten Worlds. One of the few arcade games where you upgrade strategy really matters. You need to balance getting upgrades now vs saving you zenny for big upgrades down the road. Also has the single best boss in arcade history - The War God.
Another awesome list, Kim! Speaking of Compile, aside from Jeremy Parish, I've rarely seen any documentaries about them. They were arguably as famous and influential as Capcom and Konami and deserve more coverage over their rise, fall and their library in between.
Excellent work Kim. I could watch these countdown videos all day. Could you possibly include the year as well as the name in future videos? It helps me put things in context. Keep up the great work!
Your list is your own, and I'm glad to hear it, so I'm not complaining or anything. I'm a big fan of Dynasty Wars. I didn't expect to even like it, but it grabbed me for some reason and I ended up liking it a ton. Though I totally get that others may not enjoy it the way I do. But I really like the overall game play structure of Dynasty Wars from the charge and flurry attacks and the three distinct planes. I find it works really well. I don't get tired of returning to the game, and I really enjoy the PC Engine CD port as well. I do have to say that there is definitely a reasonable amount of strategy involved in the game and it can be played well so that it feels fair rather than a coin muncher. I think it's well designed, but there's nothing like it so it does feel odd at first. I prefer it to the sequel. While Warriors of Fate is more like later beat-em-ups, it doesn't feel as good to me, plus the music just bores me, and that's a big problem for me. I like the music in Dynasty Wars much more. The music is an issue in Knights of the Round as well. It lacks punch and the music loop is very short so it repeats too much for me and it lowers my excitement level. I also don't like the music in King of Dragons, but I don't enjoy the game itself. I do agree with your decision to treat SF2 World Warrior and Champion Edition as separate entries. Aside from the obvious differences, World Warrior surprised me how different it felt from Champion Edition the last time I revisited it. Champion Edition is my favorite of that bunch as well. As for beat-em-ups, Capcom has so many good ones, I don't like to pick a single favorite, but Cadillacs & Dinosaurs is as good as any, in my opinion, has excellent music, and it's the one that surprised me the most. It's in my top tier, as are several other Capcom games. I assume, unless I missed it, you left out Mega Man: The Power Battle as it really is a CPS2 game that was backported to the CPS1. It's interesting to hear that game with both PCM and FM versions of the music. Either way, you will cover it if you do a list for CPS2. Anyway, I did enjoy hearing your thoughts on these games. I was just in a CPS1 mood a few months back, so I played a bunch of these games fairly recently. And it was a cool arcade platform with a great library, overall.
A great list, good to see some love for Knights of the Round, which was a go-to beat-em-up for me. Can't beat Kim dropping in the occasional Brass Eye reference as well!
@matt fahringer Basically, because it was an early release, I believe before the 6-button Genesis controller was released or in wide usage, the game hadn't been programmed to be compatible with it. Using a six-button controller with it basically caused the game to freak out and instantly end. There's a video of it called "Fastest Game Over ever". I've tested it out, and it's a legitimate glitch.
Very cool thanks Kim! I never knew some of these titles existed. I remember playing UN Squadron on the SNES back in the day but never saw it in the arcade. I'm gonna get out both Capcom Classics Comps for PS2 today and go through a bunch of games. : ) Black Tiger is one of my favorite Capcom games of all time. Have a great week!
CPS1 was my childhood then CPS2 was me being a teenager for whatever the reason most of those games really caught my tastes, Capcom arcade scene was impeccable only SNK were in their level.
I've only ever played the mega drive version of forgotten world's, which is probably why I've never been a big fan of it. But you have encouraged me to check out the arcade original and...yeah, it's awesome!
Cracking video Kim! Big fan of arcade games like yourself. In fact once I’d collected (nearly) everything I could have possibly wanted home console wise my taste started to drift towards collecting pcb’s - especially of stuff that never got a home port such as Carrier Air Wing so great to see that get some appreciation. Have to agree on the SFHF comment also. Never been a fan of super fast SF as I just can’t shake the moves out quick enough! I’d happily put it down to old age but it’s always been the case 🤦♂️...much prefer a more conservative SF experience.
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs is hugely popular here in Brazil. You could find it basically everywhere (and still can find it in some places). It is totally the best beat em up ever.
It's a shame that it wasn't never ported anywhere. It is basically a copyrights nightmare. But hey, they could release Alien vs Predator on that Capcom "mini console", why not dig up that same hole for this?
It always interests me to see how the rest of the world looks at Hyper Fighting. In the US that game represented the absolute peak of the initial Street Fighter boom, with people constantly on the machines and tournaments in California drawing 100+ players. And yet, if you go on Fightcade 2 nowadays, Champion Edition gets so much more action due to its greater popularity in countries like Brazil/China/South Korea. HF has just recently started to get some more love from high-level players on there after a long period of dormancy...
A couple things, Forgotten World is not a twin stick shooter, it had a dial for aiming not dual sticks. You pressed the dial to shoot. Spinning it while pressed spun your aim with the orb in place, spinning it unpressed spun the orb around you. Second, Knights of the Realm was three player, not two and had Lancelot along with Percival and Arthur as selectable heroes. Great video otherwise, loved the CPS games! It may have been relatively underpowered hardware, but Capcom sure made it sing with great artwork.
Forgotten Worlds on one of the ps2/xbox Capcom Arcade Collection uses both analog sticks and its amazing, better than the arcade. It does take some of the challenge away but it controls sooooo good.
Awesome Kim. You da man. I have been craving some good old Capcom action. I really hope you do a follow up with CPS2/3. Thanks so much for once again brightening up my day. Yo da man👍
Forgotten Worlds wasn't a twin stick shooter. It used a weighted bearing supported knob (I'm not sure if it was an roller bearing or just a simple brass oilite bushing) that was very similar to the one on Tempest to aim and shoot. The feel was like a 1 axis trackball, if you gave it a good spin it'd keep spinning by itself for a while. This knob doubled as a fire button, you'd press down on the knob to shoot. Your weapons would autofire so you just needed to press down on the knob and hold it to shoot rather than pressing it repeatedly. Because of this unique control system emulated versions don't really capture the arcade experience.
Great list Kim, I dare to disagree about Warriors of Fate being so low, definetely stronger than Captain Commando or Knighs of the round table) but hey- nostalgia is powerful thing. On the other hand, in terms of side scrolling beat'em-ups the king is only one and thats of course Cadillacs. Bit of a brag - can beat game till the punk with boomerang boss on one credit :). Looking forward to another one of those, Neo-Geo maybe? Regards Xx
I have FEELINGS about how low you ranked Muscle Bomber Duo, but I did really enjoy this list. And you're right. None of the Slam Masters/Muscle Bombers can touch Wrestlefest, which someone MIGHT have a video coming out tomorrow about. Maybe. It's possible.
Punisher IS the best Capcom beat em up. The shooting bits, to escape rolls, the weapons, spinning the enemies around when grabbing them, tossing grenades, tons of weapons to pick up, it's just too much fun. Two angry old men beating the shit out of everyone and everything. It's so much better than Final Fight. But I absolutely agree on your no. 1.
for CPS2, i vote for marvel vs. capcom. the most intense fighting game with no slowdown, at its height of the hardware! my personal favorites were street fighter alpha 3 and x-men vs. street fighter.
It should be noted that Dynasty Wars and Warriors of Fate are actually tie-in games as well, as both are based on the Shonen Jump Manga, Tenchi wo Kurau.
I have to agree SFII Championship Edition was the most well balanced as I have it on PSP.. Off topic one thing I wish fighters would implement like some boxing games is the option to turn off stamina bars.. Not knowing when a KO was going to come like real life would be very interesting..
Self Isolation with the family ain't so bad! My Son is playing Death Stranding on PS4 in the living room and I'm watching Kim Justice latest video reminiscing about my youth! 👌🤣
Surprised Street Fighter Zero wasn't in this list, as it was the last CPS1/CPSChanger game to be released. It was a scaled-down version of its CPS2 counterpart, but did exist.
I wasnt expecting 3 Wonders to be so low. Amazing games with great art direction. They were my favorites on this platform.
I love that one too.
They are they best looking games on CPS1 in my opinion!
That always happens when a clueless novice gamer makes a video
And 1941 to be that low too
For me Midnight Wonders was one of my favourite platformer when it first came out. For sometime I only went to arcades that had the three wonders.
One of my favorite arcade systems, looking forward to this. The fact that the games at the "bottom" of the list are still pretty amazing is a tribute to the quality of the system and its devs as a whole.
The only thing missing from the Capcom beat 'em up collection on the Switch, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. Such an awesome game.
Was it excluded for licensing reasons?
@@mrmacross that would be my guess.
@@mrmacross maybe double licensing - one for the comic/property and one for the auto maker. Not sure how that works
The Punisher is Capcom's first Marvel arcade game btw.
If only Punisher got into Marvel vs. Capcom.
Jim watches Kim? Amazing.

Hyper Fighting was the first SF to be based on predicting what the opponent would do instead of reacting to their moves. This is how all competitive fighting games operate now.
Yes it should be No:1
You have to cheese the ai to beat that version.
alex ojideagu yeah, my favourite version of SF2!
It's not too fast. I'm so used to Hyper Fighting I completely forget it's "fast" until I go back to Champion Edition or World Warrior.
Gip yeh it's widely regraded as the best SF2 along with SS2 Turbo
I disagree so much with the order but REALLY enjoyed the video and just watched it as a list of your favourites rather than the worst to best. I was looking for a game covering all CPS1 games and this was perfect thank you. Subscribed.
With the MiSTer CPS1 core growing in maturity this is perfectly timed!

Only thing I didn't like about Warriors of Fate was that they changed the names of the characters. At least in the NA version. Maybe they had to?
Probably my favourite dev of all time. So glad I’m of an age where I got to experience these in the arcade.

Thank you for the excellent quarantine content. 👍
The Genesis version of Forgotten Worlds has a hilarious glitch in which if you use a six-button controller, you will get an instant game over.
That's a great retro collection of Capcom games for Ps2. Highly recommended.
I very much liked "Chariot" and "Wanderers" from "Three Wonders" actually.
So many classics on here. What a great list and great memories.
The Punisher is my favorite beat'em-up game.
Punisher and Aliev VS Predator. But man Punisher feels like a CPS2 game.
My local arcade had U.N.Squadron and Ghouls 'n Ghosts, both of which ended up being two of my favourite CPS1 games.
Ghouls n ghost music in the background...wonderful, level 2 aswell, my favourite music in the game.
Another great video Kim hope you're good and well and staying safe 👍
Another great video Kim, you deserve to have way more viewers.
Perfect way to end the night with a Kim Justice video...
Gunishment, what a word lol
Loved the vid, you probably make the best video game list videos on youtube.
I always played Percival in Knights of the Round. Smdh.
CaptainRufus man he’s so sick!
Gonna give some of these a shot, thank you! Really hoping for the CPS2 and CPS3 videos :)
Great video, Kim. A lovely list of wonderment!
I played so much Final Fight on my Amiga.
Thanks for the video.
Cadillacs and dinosaurs and the punisher are my top 2 cps1 games, still best beat em ups I've played.
Great video - there's barely a game in this lot that I DON'T like. Apart from maybe Japanese Quizzes.
Yo da man👍
Never rated Mega Twins or Dynasty Wars myself either Kim.
Great video
Thanks for the vid. Helped take my mind off the troubles in the world.
Strange you have chosen the exact same choices I would've in quiz games!
They improved on with the series of Dynasty Wars
Cadillacs and dinosaurs is god tier beat em up status
Regards Xx
I liked Percival...the half armor, stance and the axe were badass..
OOh this is great to wake up to. Cheers Kim
Hey you know who Bruiser Brody is. That deserves a like.
Wonderful video Kim, thanks.
Take care over there,
STAY HOME< SAVE LIVES
Gunishment...love it! Alabaster Codefide would very much approve ✝️
My arcade memories were with, turtles, final fight, xmen, simpsons and a spiderman platformer in the arcade (not sure which one it was).
Slow down or not un squadron on snes is amazing! Total gem
3 Wonders was one of favourite games ever down the arcades
Punisher IS the best Capcom beat em up. The shooting bits, to escape rolls, the weapons, spinning the enemies around when grabbing them, tossing grenades, tons of weapons to pick up, it's just too much fun. Two angry old men beating the shit out of everyone and everything. It's so much better than Final Fight. But I absolutely agree on your no. 1.
for CPS2, i vote for marvel vs. capcom. the most intense fighting game with no slowdown, at its height of the hardware! my personal favorites were street fighter alpha 3 and x-men vs. street fighter.
It should be noted that Dynasty Wars and Warriors of Fate are actually tie-in games as well, as both are based on the Shonen Jump Manga, Tenchi wo Kurau.
also, as far as Capcom's greatest ever sequel, that might be debatable considering there's at least one other game to fit that bill, hell maybe two.
Hyper fighting is top 1 in my heart
Not watched it yet, but loved Wrestlefest back in the day
I have to agree SFII Championship Edition was the most well balanced as I have it on PSP..
Off topic one thing I wish fighters would implement like some boxing games is the option to turn off stamina bars.. Not knowing when a KO was going to come like real life would be very interesting..
cadillacs and dinosaurs the car looks like the blue car out the 80's milky way advert :D
Love your videos, really! Thank you!
but... I always play as Percival in KOTR! lol great video
