Travels by Narrowboat - "You Are Cordially Invited" - S10E13

- Aslan & I continue along the South Oxford, towards the first of several locks on our way to an overnight mooring near the tiny village of Somerton.
We soon arrive at Aynho Weir Lock, which for a short distance drops us onto a length of the Oxford Canal which becomes the River Cherwell.
Along the way I receive an invitation to a full English Breakfast and later a canalside birthday BBQ. Unfortunately my strict schedule along this barren 21 mile stretch of the Oxford Canal prevents me from accepting these kind and generous offers. Ah well, maybe next time . . .

So enjoy watching your videos! I've tried watching a few other narrowboat videos, but they don't compare. Your cinematography has such a great style and not only tells a story, but captures such beautiful scenery. Small request.... can we get another cooking video? It's been awhile! Thanks!!
Many thanks Christina, great to hear you appreciate the series. Since Season 7 I do cooking videos between seasons of TBN. 🙂
Best part of my week, escaping to travel with Kevin and Aslan.
Mine also.
Amen!
Kevin, you film so well I feel like I spent the day on the English Canals. Thanks for sharing your day with me. ❤️
I probably watch too much UA-cam these days, but, with my slow-easy-have-fun lifestyle, this is still my favorite channel.
Another peaceful morning watching you float slowly along beautiful countryside and good conversation.
Thanks Kevin for taking us along onboard the mighty Aslan on this lovely cruise through beautiful countryside. I hope that you are doing well. Have a great weekend. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Friday doesn’t half come round quick…Which means another instalment from Kev and Aslan. ALWAYS a good thing ❤️
Thanks again, CHG! What a shame, looked like a lovely party, with a good group of people. But at age 66, I fully understand your position. When you get tired, you get tired and that's all she wrote. No point pushing yourself of an evening, only to be miserable the next day. Very nice stretch of canal. Nothing really remarkeable or memorable, but pleasant enough for sure. Enjoyed your commentary, as always. Until next time, Cheers and godspeed!
The perfect accompaniment to a cold beer after a busy week!
Hi Kevin,
Interesting comment about the boating community, we’ve found that to be true nearly everywhere we have traveled.
Happy holidays,
Bob & Jill
Kevin, thank you for your videos, always a great pleasure to view them. Your perspectives on life, so interesting.
This is Colin and Heather from Ohio
Back in October 2021, we were coming to join you lucky folks on the cut. Well we landed in September this year. And commented on one of your videos.
Your reply ,to the comment we made is below
.......Msg start, CountryHouseGent
Thanks indeed Colin. Pleased you enjoyed watching. If it was me, doing it all again and knowing what I know now, I'd go for a boat with a nicely sorted Gardner twin or three cylinder. Whichever though, enjoy every minute. 🙂 msg end......
Well although somewhat late, I have secured a lovely boat, with guess what a Gardner 3LW, it was the first boat we saw, we then looked at plenty of others, but we bought Iris No 2. Now have the pleasure of a lovely Gardner
Heather is still in ohio and will be joining me in April, she doesn't want to do the winter in UK. Anyway, thank you for your advice, what an engine........ that said if my memory serves me well, Aslan's Petter Mclaren is a wonderful sound and it's been serving you very well
Hope to see you about on the cut. Keep up the videos. Best Regards Colin
Merry Christmas 🎅 and a happy & healthy 🥦 new year. 🍻 Best wishes, Colin.⛄️🚢
Kevin your joys, sufferings and various escapades are truly an amazing experience to vicariously be part of. I only wish I could be there in my own boat to share too.
Love the variety of camera angles. Happy Christmas! 🎄🎄
Currently watching Season 1 episode 3 on Prime and spotted a cracking little NB called ‘Iets Groter’ moored at the Braunston locks that has recently been sold from Rugby boats. It sold really quickly as was such a good buy. Was lovely to see it looking so pristine and well cared for in your vid.
Everything looks fine and dandy in the lens of CHG. 🙂
Oh really…😏
When you think about it, 7 miles when you're having to do 1 to 2 miles an hour at times, dealing with locks and the occasional swing/lift bridge... yeah, that can add up to a long day for sure. Perspective, I guess. Thanks for another one. Take care. 🎸🎶
Thank you for this lovely trip with you and Aslan!
Watching this on Christmas in Florida Kevin. We’ve been watching since your adventures with Aslan began. We were in London and Worcester over the Summer hoping to get a glimpse of the two of you; no such luck.
We did get onto a narrow boat while there, and in some small way, it was all your doing….
Cheers mate.. keep doing what you do, as there are many copy cats out there; you and Aslan are the original streaming lot on the River Trust Network..
Stephen and Alison
How I wish I was comfortably numb. Need more beer or wine, maybe both.
Top video thank you 😊
Thanks again for my relaxing moments of the week!
In our prayers
Thanks!
Thank you Lee. You're very kind and that means a great deal. Cheers 🙂
The Oxford is a lovely canal. I enjoyed chugging along with there, Kevin 😄. Happy travels!
Today’s observation: The 7 mile canal challenge. L&L = Lifts & Locks, fast water and narrow stretches. So, your entertaining series does illustrate man’s daily struggles in Navigating through life nevertheless! Thoroughly enjoyable viewing……cheers
Just as an FYI, the somerton deep lock house is completely off grid. Its got rights to draw water from the canal which is filtered for washing. Drinking water has to be brought in. There is no vehicular access, so its either walk the towpath, or the house was sold with a small nb which just shuttles back and forth.
Wow that shows just how isolated that section of the canal is, though modern services could've gotten that far by now.
England is such a beautiful place. Love your videos.
I’m so jealous of the beauty of England’s countryside. Where I live it’s a lovely shade of brown 8 months out of the year
I Kevin very good lvog thanks well done for long canal journey all the best for now 😊
Thank you Kevin~NancyR
Low-angle shots around 4:00 were well-conceived, very nice.
Thanks
Fabulous thank you Myles. That's most appreciated. 🙂
After Somerton Deep, methinks the "Oxford Canal" notice is for the benefilt of railway travellers who pass by on the embankment on the other side. You'd think it couldn't be seen from the train - but it is (I checked...)
EE Kevin you would never catch me turning a free English Breakfast down! 🥓🍳👍
Was sorely tempted. It was close.
Great video Nells house bridge and a lock wow not a pub too?
Lovely lock keepers cottage sold there.
I love the way the chug of your boat is merged between clips perfectly.
Breakfast and a party 🥳 you were honoured 🎖 such a pity you didn't take em up on the offer. 😢
Have fun 👍 be good 👍
See you in your next episode
😊 kev the Brinklow kayaker...😅
like others posting here, Kevin, I, too, look forward to your weekly post, finding ease and a peaceful feeling viewing the sights you record and hearing you narrate your journey punctuated by the steady voice of Aslan's diesel -- this week, though, I'll be distracted by the suspense generated by your "scenes from next week" which have me worried that you are being returned to Banbury under armed escort, or however they do that sort of thing in Britain...
Another great ride! And a long day to boot. Thank you. By the way, I was surfing around UA-cam and caught you on another narrowboat episode from 3 weeks ago called NarrowboatWill. What a surprise! Seems you are quite the celebrity to him. 🙂-Cheers from Seattle!
Thank you for sharing your adventures. May they continue well into the future.
Love the camera angles you choose to set up Kevin. They really show what it's like to be a "lone" narrowboater... I mean... the actual mechanics of it. It does beg the question, have you ever had one of your cameras fall/get knocked off into the water? Inquiring minds want to know. ;) Thanks for sharing your travels. I really enjoy them.
Fortunately I haven't had a camera fall in the canal, though it did come very close near the start of this video with a huge gust of wind in 2022. ua-cam.com/video/uOpGXPjtVro/v-deo.html
Hiya Kev. 2:33 The CRT workboat. That would do me just perfect. Tools in the fo'c'sle, nice working space midships for making stuff and standing bikes, ample living space in the cabin, and a nice spacious tiller deck aft. Sh1T colour scheme tho. Ill carry on watching now.
I really look forward to this every week. Keep it up, hello from Seattle Washington
As usual a lovely video. Intriguing cliffhanger of next week's video. 😮 Can't wait.
If memory serves me correct you mentioned 2 or 3 videos ago that this stretch was not very populated. It’s amazing to see how beautiful a whole lotta nothing can be. To me there’s nothing I like better than the quiet country life!!!
He's back! 😁👍
Helloooooooooo Kevin, I bet that cup of tea was good.
Great video, looking4ward to your next video you share with all of us.
7 - 8 miles on the canal is far enough I remember it well went had to move the boat so far then go back and get the ruddy car for work the next Monday.
After accident could never do the moving part or walk to get the car.
Thank you for sharing X X X
Thanks Kevin for another great adventure.
Watching you right now Kevin. Bel has a lovely house. Go and get that cup of tea, Yorkshire I hope! Beautiful vlog as always.
Kevin, thanks for another fine cruising vlog. You shot some fine video to share here. I think anybody would’ve been knackered after that much work in during those hours. See you next time! By the way, I would really like to see you cooking again, that’s always interesting and enticing. Goodbye from over here in Portland, Oregon.
Oxford is the best canal you have been on... no question 😊
My favorite UA-cam channel!
Love you and happy Christmas xx
I know this canal so well, and all the good mooring places. The lock landing at Aynho weir lock is before the long bridge. You should see it right now, the river is in flood and the fields are under water. Not enough headroom to get under Nell bridge!
Ooh ek Phil, I can imagine. The alert emails from CRT have been flying thick and fast these past couple of weeks for the two river stretches.
From what i can gather, Nell was the Family name of a commercial Merchant from Louth originally, who used the Canal for Business.
There you are!
Loved the show Kevin, All the best from Stephen and Jane. SETTLE N.Y.
Howdy Kevin & Happy Christmas!!!! May the year ahead bring you every good & happy blessing the the universe has to give you!!!!!! Hugs & tugs from Kenny Ohio USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've driven by Aynho Wharf soo many times - a classic east-west cross country route. Nice to finally see it from a narrowboat perspective. The Cherwell floods there spectacularly, on occasion, and the road becomes a causeway.
is there a Naismith Rule equivalent for Canals, I wonder ? 🤔
Thank you, as ever, Kevin
That sounds like a good route, I haven't tried that. I'll check it out, whenever I get round to getting the bike out of storage that is.
Still at it I see...Enjoyed.
Brilliant title Sir!!!!
Your videos are the best way to wind down during my lunch breaks. Thank you SO much.
You're very welcome Chris, thank you for watching. 🙂
As always, we enjoyed your adventure! Thank you 🙏
Hello Kevin from Kansas! I watched this this afternoon and had a spot of Typhoo. I hope you do some more cooking videos sometime they were very entertaining. Keep your chin up!
Always fun to see a fellow Kansan on a narrow boat show. We don't have canals like this here 😂
"Ayhno sunshine when she's gone"...
Another fine job sir, like another viewer who comment said... I vote for more cooking videos. Cheers!
More cooking to come, after Season 10. 🙂
I really appreciate the details in the landscape which you show us, also in the sky - surely that was a Vickers VC10 at 12:10, one of the last hurrahs of the all-British aircraft industry? The railway and the viaduct you showed us is the Great Western line from Oxford to Birmingham, hence the name of the pub which also appears! Great cruise as always!
It sure sounded like a classic
Motorcycle boots, I believe, on a narrowboat.... love the contradiction!
You seem in such great spirits, helpful folks along the way... this episode was especially fun to watch! Safe cruising!
Well spotted. They're my faithful old bike boots from the Harley Shovelhead and Kawasaki Nomad days. A little on the worn side now but still very comfortable and strangely the soles haven't split. 🙂
I thought I saw a couple of splits starting though..Merry Christmas and a very Happy New year Kevin..all the best from Yorkshire
The evolution of camera techniques utilized now versus the very early videos is really noticeable. In addition, the editing has also evolved to go hand in hand with those techniques to provide a most professional presentation of life on a narrow boat. I appreciate the amount of work required to produce such wonderful videos.
Enjoyable video, as always!
Thank you for that and thanks for watching.
I can see from your eyes how tired you are - no words needed. That was very pretty scenery, but also what a schlep!
Great video!
Awww another grand cruise thanks for letting us come along tc now keep well and warm the oldies 👍🤗
cool vid cranking on thanks lewe
Lovely episode. I did have to google whether half six meant 5:30 or 6:30, and I see you meant 6:30. See you next week!👍🏻💛😀
Kevin a great video ,brought back many memories to me I remembered going down Somerton deep lock in about 1974/75. ❤
It must be so nice to meet fans who enjoy your relaxing show.
I watched this yesterday while I was busy doing things in the kitchen, so today I watched again and enjoyed my relaxing armchair travel with you, Kevin. As a matter of fact Aslan’s engine nearly put me to sleep 😴 😅 Thanks for another lovely video!
We still love watching your travels now we have our own boat. 2 years later, convinced by you and fellow vloggers and no regrets. That Aynho lock is a pig isn’t it! 😮
Put put put❤😊
Ah Kevin and Aslan are back to sooth the soul.
Couldn’t help noticing (and admiring) your comfy-looking leather boots with the inside zipper. Can you share the brand? Cheers from Minnesota (where a good pair of boots are a cherished part of winter life)!
Nothing fancy, dirt cheap but surprisingly well made, very hard wearing, comfortable AND waterproof. www.ghostbikes.com/5269-black-heritage-leather-motorcycle-boots.html
The pacing and cinematography in your videos is perfection, Kevin. Thanks for another enjoyable ride aboard Aslan:)
The cottage at Somerton Deep Lock is absolutely gorgeous, it’s completely off grid, no mains water ☺️ only access is via canal, included in the sale was a tiny narrow boat called Dilly 😄(which the owners used to get to there car about 1/2 mile away) a truly fantastic spot, great vlog again thank you 😊
It's a damp dark day in Seattle so thanks for the ride Kevin with you and Aslam! Gorgeous scenery & incredible videography & i have no idea how you do it. Happy trails!
Think this is one of your best. Maybe I’m biased as Aynho is one of my favourite places. My job in the early ‘80s required me to travel through the village many times. I can’t think of a more quintessentially medieval rural hamlet. Great job on the sound edit, that huge creaking lock gate was marvellous and the windlass hitting the deck added le verite. Thank you.
The dest plan for living aboard is “don’t make plans”. Take life as it comes, chill out. You only need a few feet of ARMCO to chain up on. The other end use two pins in a “V” formation to moor securely. This method served me well for 20 years solo cruising.
Kevin wanted to take the time to wish you a happy Christmas!
Season's best wishes to you Cliff. 🙂
Kevin thanks for giving us the local tour, I too appreciate the camaraderie of the canal people, enjoy Charlie from Pennsylvania 😅
There are a great many good people in this world. Been watching since you were selling the Vulcan. I just bought mine and found you then. I started looking at your other content and discovered narrow boating. I love it so much and it's on the top of my bucket list. Peace.
when we owned a boat kev and couldn't find a mooring we would often park up along side a pub or a private house , and as long as we cleared up the mess and bagged the dog poo most people didn't mind . although one house owner i remember did , a grumpy old sort , a proper stick in the mud grumpy old git type . i don't think it was the spur of the moment bbq we had but the wife practising the bag pipes early Sunday morning ( as she always does) come rain or shine ....anyway kevin we are thinking about getting another barge and was wondering if you would like to meet up maybe for a bit of a proper london knees up ?
hope to see you soon .
😆 Oh yes that darn bagpipe practice. Some people just don't appreciate quality music. 😳
she smells a bit but has a heart of gold ...@@CountryHouseGent
😆 Reminds me of Tommy Cooper saying he was looking in the attic with his wife. Dusty, smelly and covered in cobwebs, but she's good with the kids. 😆
Nearly that time of the year again chap….. what’s going to be served with your sprouts this time 😂
More sprouts 😆 It's going to be 101 Ways To Cook A Sprout. 🥴🤭
Thank you for another wonderfully relaxing video. I hope you have a happy Christmas, and a relaxing start to 2024.
People helping people out. What a novel yet archaic idea. I've been trying to find help for months, but here in the States, if you don't have and are lacking in key essentials, the ones that do have will make sure you never will....but will pump themselves up some kind of tried starting a metal fabrication shop frenzy saying they care when they don't. Apologies to all you great folks out there....having an extremely crappy month and end of year. I tried, am trying to start a metal fabrication shop. It's harder than I thought and I can't find any help anywhere. Bad credit...you're doomed. I was an alcoholic up until 12 years ago but that past is hanging on for dear life ... everyone remembers that guy. Again apologies for the ranting vent, I have ZERO family/support group and most of the time my only way to vent is in the comments of vlogs hoping someone might give shit. I want to be on those canals so bad I taste it every night. Yet, just a dream.
Good Video Kevin …. One of only 4 channels I watch now… too many channels selling the life short…
Thank you for your support. 🙂
@@CountryHouseGent stay well … hope you’re sorted for Christmas 🎄
💜💙💚
That last lock looked like hard work, Kev. Maybe you need to replenish your strength with helpings of pork pies. What's for dinner
Lovely stuff Kevin. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, Kevin! Sure glad you got your tea in just in time.....😁
Brilllllliant Kevin - thanks for sharing ⛵️ 👍
Hi Kevin
Another relaxing vlog, canal life eh, best laid plans laid to waste again, your laid back attitude so suits canal life
Take care mate
Jane & Martin.
Another great vlog Kevin, a very merry Christmas 😊
Hello again Kevin ,
Well.. The comments below state all the good things about your Video Technique ! BRAVO !
SBF
A great video so far, but I have to write this half way.....The pig farm.....If you get the chance, you should visit it Kevin. My daughter and her family went there last year...I live in Japan and via zoom talking to my youngest grandson - then 4 years old Harry - he said to me,,,,It was awesome Grandad the animals were so interesting,,,,,and so delicious!!! My daughter confirmed it was an afternoon well spent and the food top notch! Thank you, as always....Back to the vlog....
Another great vlog! That landing at Aynho is a bit scary as a solo boater! 😬
When the party people invited you, you said something about permits - do they have a leisure mooring for that spot?! Also, the Armco when you said it was private land… with the risk of sounding like a thicky, how would I know it’s private land? No towpath?! Thank you & apologies for sooo many questions 🤦🏻♀️ I’m learning before they let me out on the water alone! 😊
From a distance I thought they were permit moorings but going past, turns out it was visitor moorings. Anything not on the towpath side ( 'off towpath' ) is generally private land. Have a great time when you get on the water. Top tip, go slower than you think is slow and you'll be fine. 🙂
@@CountryHouseGent thank you, much appreciated! 😊👍🏼
