THANK YOU!!! BEEN LOOKING FOR A TUTORIAL OUTLINING THIS FOR YEARS!!
Glad it found the one guy who did :-)))))))
@@MediaDivision There are literally dozens of us!
😜
@@MediaDivision Just discovered your channel today, really love what you do. Hope more people discover you in the future!
Thanks a lot Agonist......... yeah, me too...... believe me!
Lolz... your VO was sync'd to Rachel's lips for a bit... was hilarious intro.
Also, thank you. Was perfect. :D
Lucky A. True! I haven’t noticed! Funny. Thanks Lucky
I thought that was intentional?
@@desotaku5202 no... the brain is a beautiful story machine ;-)
@@desotaku5202 we are on the same boat
I dont even make videos or film and I still was really impressed and entertained.
.... Thanks Berzer..... thats sounds like a Filmmaker in the making 😜
Love these sort of in depth cinematographic tutorials, hope to see more in the future. Less CGI, more ol' school Thank you!
Thank you Tim… yeah, when I see one more CGI suite or make up I will go berserk ;-) Practicals look so much better. My next (long term) project will be practical, too. Combining stop motion, scaled miniatures, and rear projection to recreate something like the "Terminator (1) in the factory" scene.
@@MediaDivision Can't wait to watch this one...
@@johannes914 What keeps you? 😜😝😁
@@Gordymax Thank you so much Gordymax....that really makes me happy. Glad to have you around
@@MediaDivision I ment your next (long term) project
It's just amazing how the music completely changes the scene and makes the lighting go from good to perfect.
Thanks man.... it is the closest I could find to match the mood of the old Blade Runner that will not give me copyright claims
Effectively you are recreating what compact photo cameras do when they flash. You know, those red eye pictures. Strong light on the same axis as the lens. The difference is mainly in light intensity and getting the light in the actual optical path instead of very close to it.
Cool tutorial, thank you. :)
Thanks Christian……Yes, same principal physics… but this is the way to "maintain" that effect in film (you couldn't with just sticking a bright light on your cam) even with closed iris.
Glad to see this. I was amazed when I read in Cinefex #155 about BR 2049 that "In designing replicant characters, the production abandoned the telltale metallic eye-glimmer that signified synthetic humans in the previous film. 'The metallic lenses used on the first Blade Runner are no longer available,' noted makeup designer department head Donald Mowat. 'Those lenses were hard, they were uncomfortable and the dangers associated with them were severe.'"
I wonder if they ever printed a correction.
That is such a bullshit... they should be ashamed! One google search reveals all tricks stated by the original film crew. There is really no excuse. Thanks for exposing this blunder Max.
You really know what you're doing, working with you must be a bloody pleasure.
Thanks Beamer.... very nice of you!!!
This is so cool, thank you for making a tutorial. I like how Ridley explains the trick, but it’s tough to imagine the setup without a visual to help.
Glad you are entertained Rodrigo!
Why doesn’t this have more views ? Excellent work!
Well, a niche of a specific subject within a special interest…… ;-) Thanks a lot man!
I just found this channel and I love it. Thank you for this tutorial, and I thought the final mix looked amazing, that shining eye effect looks phenomenal
A very classic practical effect…. Glad you enjoy our older stuff James. Check out our newer videos, we came a long way since these days.
And I always thought the actors in Blade Runner were using some kind of lens, this is a very neat trick.
... yeah... sometimes it is simpler then one thinks… still, so cool as an effect
I feel so lucky to have found this video! Thanks for the high production value and intense details. Can't wait to try this! Have a great weekend. :)
Pleasure ... good luck with hitting your marks
Dude
That was really good!
Thanks Lebowski ;-)
Fantastic! I have so much respect for all your effort.
Thank you for this tutorial, I got my setup dialed in now.
Always… we improved the setup since. Use a 50/50 beam splitter and a small desk light… that works well. Teleprompters like the Parrot will do the job
That spray FX scene was majestic.
Thanks man
Thanks for the upload. I've been looking for this for a while now, it still my favorite scene for its visual beauty. I've started a Batchlor degree in photography and this video will give me ideas. You earnt a new subscriber.
Thanks, nice to have you. We perfected the technique since this old old video, so, if you have questions, hit me up.
We used it for our Blade Runner spoof in this episode: ua-cam.com/video/bIhaItLnSR0/v-deo.html
And here is a little VFX breakdown:

If you as a red transparent sheet, it will look like the glowing eyes for terminator
Yes.... but moving the eyes is changing luminosity, so it looks different then the Terminator glowing eyes.
Oldie but goldie!
Thanks!
man ! you are really something !! no one ever takes the time to explain practicals ! am glad i found you !!! thanks allot
My pleasure and thanks you metalje!
This is so.awesome, for so long I wondered how they did it, thanks for the uploads
Thanks… we improved a lot on the technique. Watch our Scope series and see how we use it in a Blade Runner Spoof
Very cool! I think I have binge watched your whole channel already. Excited for some more content!
Thanks for hanging..... working on it ;-)
I still remember the first time I saw Blade Runner. I was probably six years old living overseas and this movie was on VHS. (I think this was around '84!) I knew nothing about "Replicants" or "incept dates" or anything like that. But I was so mesmerized by the movie. The visuals, the music, the sounds. I own the soundtrack. I played the Westwood game. I bought the books. Yea, I am a fan.
It's 2022 and I am *still* learning something new related to this movie! Thank you very much for explaining it so easily! :-)
Same for me... a life long companion of sorts.
My pleasure... if you are a BR fan... our SCOPE series is for you... Anamorphic with a lot of BR spoofs
ua-cam.com/video/bIhaItLnSR0/v-deo.html
Great video mate! Never knew that those effects were made for real
Thanks DJ… yeah… for lack of alternatives. Blade Runner is pre CGI. And it still looks way better!!!
Thank you, this tutorial was incredible. I remember watching the Ridley Scott interview explaining this technique but was difficult to visualize.
Dauntlessfilms my pleasure Dauntless. Nothing like learning by doing, right ;-)
1 replicant disliked this.
😅😉😄 maybe he lost his precious photos that day
daemorhedron , must have been one of the post prod “eye glowers” 😄😄
FINALLY, FINALLY SOMEONE SHOWS US HOW THIS WAS DONE
Paul Aulridge Jr my pleasure Paul... glad you found it useful
Very cool. Thanks for the explanation of how the original eye effect was created by the d.o.p along with ridley's ideas.
Thanks... my pleasure
Very nice job of making a practical effect available to even low budget film makers. Your explanation was easy to follow and I for one will certainly experiment with this and find a way to work it into future projects.
I'm very interested to see your results if you should do, post a link then please. Thank you for your kindness.
That was awesome! That's by far the best way to do it without too much hassle or ton's of editing! Really quite simple and it costs very little to setup. I also liked the overlay, maybe you could do a step by step on how you created that and wish you would do more like these!
Thank you Richard... the overlay is very basic... just using a couple of masks to blend fitting images.
Simply use a background that fits your foreground and dissolve the foreground slowly into the background. Duplicate foreground on 3 layers. 1st just 20% transparency (gets some atmosphere in). 2nd very wide feathered mask around your subject. 3rd a narrow fathered mask around your subject. This is not a "works all the time" thing... just work it out for any given task, the human eye is easily fooled. Good luck
I'm sorry - but you need to have more subs! I've only just discovered your channel, but the quality of your content is just insane!
Thanks Danyal... made 10k subs this month 😜we will see
Oh my gosh... Thank you so much! I didn't know how to set it up like that! You deserve to have million subscribers!
My pleasure Juan... hope that works for you!!! I wish I had :-))))
Yes! Practical FX!
This is great sir , thanks a ton. Never thought it would be possible without proper post production .
Pleasure… it had to be… there was no possibilities to do this effect in post at the time
@@MediaDivision Yes , Exactly . I have just been a mystery to me .
Amazing tut! One of the best I've seen.
Cheers man..... watch the Golvader tut.... that was sooo much more work thyn this one ;-)
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ive been wanting to know this for years... Also your little shot at the end... You look great, You look like a replicant whos just discovered his whole life time of memories were in fact implanted and youre not unique having strange dreams of unicorns...

Very nice! Effective, easy, practical effects are so often overlooked... :)
Wow, just tried this at home today and was having a hard time getting that perfect angle. Thanks for the detailed video.
yeah, it is tricky, but once you made it, it becomes easier and easier. My pleasure James

Thank you sooo much for making this video!!
My pleasure Sobha!!!
thank you for this tutorial!! I'm writing an essay about the lighting techniques of blade runner and other film noirs, so this video helped a ton!
Thanks man... glad you fin it helpful. If you want to include anamorphic to the essay... we have something upcoming
Fantastic channel! Love this "analog" special effects. Thank you for the tutorials :)
Me to Tony… they look just way better then the digital stuff. My pleasure and thank you.
Transparencies are totally like the coolest hacks ever.. !
Well, it only works in very specific situations. Most of the time I work without greenscreen as the look is always a bit artificial
Your channel is awesome and very important for all the stuff you teach and share with us. I can't tell you with words how much i'm grateful for what you do and for all that i'm learning from you. Thank you very much again, regards from Italy. Moreno.
Thank you so much for your very motivating feedback Moreno... grazie mille. I will try to live up to that 😬😉
Thank you ! Thank you so much ! Blade Runner is so rich, so much to learn from the lighting, sets, sound design, vfx. I'll try this on my recently bought Z6 & 24-70 f/4s Nikkor ! =)
Our pleasure man... love that movie, too. Planning some cool Blade Runner VFX for the next episode
Really interesting, I'm a huge fan of digital, but will definitely try out this!
Thanks man… sure. I think that digital FX look better, if they enhance practical effects………… most of the time ;-)
Fascinating! I had never thought about this effect but having watched your video I really appreciate it, it’s a great tool and I’ll definitely refer back to this video in future ^_^ your teaching method is great, pragmatic and full of choices to make the same result. Thank you 😊
Thanks a lot Dove! Let me know when you use it on one of your film!!!!
this is so cool!!
that's awesome!!!!! thanks for sharing
Cool stuff!
Workbench thank you man!!
Just stumbled onto your channel, that was great. You've gained a new subscriber, and I would love to see more content like this !
Thank you Inurublij... I am doing my best!!!
Beautiful! Nice job, very inspirational!
Thank you Stardog!!!!! Glad to inspire
Was wondering how you made that "tyrells office" light glimmer reflections?
Projector with defocussed pattern in the face
@@MediaDivision Also, sheets of mylar moved to reflect on Tyrell's walls.
@@MediaDivision Awesome content as usual. This is looking great! I think that projectors are underused. I am thinking of trying a cross slit light projection on the face. Horizontal beam on the eyes and vertical beam doing a slow scaning movement on the face, highlighting some smoke. I wonder how would that look…
Thanks… sounds interesting… go for it
looks epic, dude.
This is the way 😉Thanks Dabu!
It's funny how something that we hate in photography can be used as a practical effect. The fact that they used it like that shows the imagination they had at the time, when there were almost no CG in movies. Thanks!
Agreed… well, it is a very rare case of how one could possibly use this - and own it.
this is beautiful
Thank you Marco!
Loved it. Thanks for making the video
Thanks for watching. Pleasure man....
Just stumbled upon this video and I thought your scene at the beginning of the video was a part of the movie :D
Nice job, looks awesome.
Labowich ha ha..... that’s the best compliment one can get ... I wish i’d agree.
Awesome!
Thanks man!
Again, never thought of it!
………………… thats the spirit 😂😂😂😂😂😂
AWESOME!
Thanks man!!!
I love this video. I use filters, glass, and other little bits to create practical effects in my stills photography so this is brilliant.
Nothing like the real thing 👍 Next episode will be for you I guess… Instagram has some hints
This was so freaking good.
If you enjoy this....... wait until you see our new episodes. We got so much better at everything. We use this technique in scope chapter one to spoof Blade Runner... you are going to love it: ua-cam.com/video/bIhaItLnSR0/v-deo.html
keep up this kind of interesting unique work, very appreciated
Thank you!
Sure thing
This is fantastic! Thanks so much for breaking this process down in such great, reproducible detail. I'm curious--is the size of the "disc" of light related to the size/shape of the light source or the size of the actor's pupil? To make the disc as large as possible, do I need to find a way to (safely) dilate my actor's eyes?
Thanks and… my pleasure Priscilla. No, from my experience a focussed single source light works by far the best. Shining any light source directly in a eye will of course make it contract a bit. I do it with myself in here a lot and you can see, that they stay open enough to make the effect work. I personally don't like "dilated" pupils, as it makes you look like a deer in the headlights. If you want that look, you can use a camera with good low light performance and use a eye-light with little power. Results are so so because of the low light. If you wanted dilated pupils in bright environment… a joint comes to mind, if that happens to be legal wherever you are - other substances have the same effect. Optologist have drops that will do that job as well.
this is so neat!
Thank you Starseed
great tutorial, very well made and informative!
Thank you Ronald!!! Much Appreciated!
Nice work.
Thanks Dempsey
I'm subscribing, your work is amazing!!!
glad to hear that lou.... thanks a lot
I really love this channel!
Glad yo do Bo… thanks for hanging.
Wow, so cool! Thank you! I was looking for how they did this and couldn't even find any BTS with Ridley Scott. 🙌🙏 Would you mind sharing your favorite focal length and the best distance from camera to subject, light to subject, light to subject and camera. I actually got it to work using a high powered LED flashlight but I wasn't able to get the effect in both eyes. Thanks again for an amazing tutorial and extra setups to get the real deal. 🔥🔥🔥
sure thing. By now I can make this fly with about anything... it is just a matter of testing and doing it. We did do the "Leon sequence of Blade Runner practical for our SCOPE anamorphic series... there we used 80mm anamorphic on FF at about 1 meter distance, and it worked great... look here:

The hole episode is SCOPE chapter one in our epic episode playlist
@@MediaDivision Awesome!!! Thank you so much for your response and your help.
Awesome !!!
Thanks!!!
Thx for this vid, very helpful. Yesterday for my final in lighting class, I attempted to recreate the Rachel Meets Deckard scene with a model friend. I got everything but the eye reflection.Nice to know how to do it for later though.
Pleasure Dan… Sorry that you got it to late… I heard they did the original lighting with just one light and a bounce (plus the glow light)… did you do it the same way?
Great contribution : your canal is so instructive, thanks for this!
Thanks a lot man… glad this is something for you!

I wish I would have seen this in October when I filmed a Halloween video. This would have added a lovely extra layer to it...Never mind. Great video.
Thanks man... there is always a next Halloween... if you are lucky
Just found your channel! Great stuff man, subscribed!
Do you think they did the Constantine Papa Midnite bar scene the same way?
Amazing tutorial, man. Thanks!
No... those are most defenetly CG... to bright, to perfect, different colors, to fake..Thanks man
Really cool
ULTRAWIDE thanks ultra!
I'm buying some hardware to do this look! Wonderful and informative video!!
Cheers man… go for a reasonably big beam splitter glass… they are not that expensive and it will make your live so much easier.
@@MediaDivision Update: I've been working with this effect with a lot of trial and error. I found that you can buy one-way film for windows and a picture frame for cheap. You can apply the window film to the glass of the picture frame and it works fairly well. I do have some issues though. The window film darkens the image a bit and you have to light the subject a bit more. I also have to apply some cinefoil to the book light to help reduce any glare on the picture frame. I keep coming back to this video to compare your results and mine and each time I get closer and closer. I'll keep you posted as I continue to experiment.
Dont be angry!!! Subscribed!!!!
Thats the spirit man… glad to have you
Amazing
Thanks
THANK. YOU.
