  • The Dam Is Finished! well, sort of. This is the final video on the three part series of the dam re-build. As a homestead, we had wanted a pond for a long time. Last year we attempted to build that pond and the dam ended up failing on us. In the previous two video we have gone over exactly why it failed and how to avoid these problems. In this video we finally top out the dam and get some great aerial shots of before and after to really showcase the progress on this pond build. Huge shout out to Jerry, who is the retired dozer operator that helped us out, Man behind the Scenes for coming up and running the roller, and Mike for renting us the excavation equipment. Hope you enjoy the video!

This doesn’t even look like the same location now. Huge transformation! The dam failure turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Now you have a pond that is twice the size in a beautiful location that you can be very proud of. That dam will not fail again. Giving a big shoutout to Aaron and Jerry for helping you on the repair.

Out of the ashes rose the phoenix, ok a bigger pond !!!
For the fish habitat, could you use concrete blocks, bricks or stone ??
You had plenty of help along the way, and you certainly needed it !!! Good to have friends who can bring their skills along to help out, I was half expecting to see your eldest operating the roller !!
Good advice from your better half to the girls to go into the pond, you will never see it again !! You are leaving a fantastic legacy on this land, long may it continue Sir !! 💪😎👍🇬🇧

  • @NotJustaTool
    @NotJustaTool 2 роки тому +1

Maybe some slate rock on the property could make good fish habitat? I would pour an underwater concrete bridge. You have some experience on that. lol. At least you could shape it so it doesn't catch lures. Even double as a boat ramp??? You'll figure it out. Cheers Captain. Sorry been away a few weeks getting married. Best week ever! 🙌

Cap’n, that looks spectacular. You guys did a mighty tidy job on that rebuild job. I can’t wait to feed the fish when I sail over on the UA-cam Yacht!!!
You mentioned fish cover. When I was 16, my Yardner job turned into a lake builder for the summer. My boss hired a construction crew to build a 4 acre lake in a valley in his sons property. An older guy and I were charged with building three stationary fishing docks and numerous fish breeding structures.
As soon as the bottom of the pond was established we began dismantling a neighbors rock wall and loading it into an old pickup bed. The stones ranged in size from basketball to bushel basket in diameter. They were both roundish and flat. We then hauled them to the pond bottom and made stacks about 6’ in diameter. They were laid to make as many cavities as possible for smaller fish to have cover. It took two pickup loads of stones per pile.
Once they were in place we laid a tractor tire flat in the top. These had a couple of holes drilled in the side wall to allow air to escape. We repeated this maybe a half dozen times.
The fishing docks were located so they had clear fishing lanes to both reach and get between the the spawning beds. Once the lake was full the tops of the tires were between three and six feet below the surface.
Did it work? Like a charm. The catfish flourished. So much so that… after I turned 18, I left that job and started work in a factory. The following year my youngest brother took a job with my old boss.
Every Saturday, he went to the lake and trapped catfish. These were then cleaned and sold to a local Mom & Pop corner market. Because they were fed daily, the fish had grown to the perfect size and, I know for a fact that they were delicious! Because, while my brother was trapping, I was fishing to catch my own dinner!
As for bass and perch, the fish docks and aquatic plants provided adequate cover for them. The docks were built so that the bottom of their decks were 6” above the spillway surface. I had fishing rights to that lake for about 12 years. I caught the largest and most bass of my life during that time period.
The design of the fish structures came from our local State Conversation Agent… his son is now serving in his dad’s place. The father advised also on the best mix and quantity of the half dozen species of bait, sport snd catfish to stock. He also helped get fingerlings at a discount. Best of all, the advice cost nothing!
Cap’n, I’ve never built my own pond so, obviously I’m no expert. But, I know people who are. Perhaps your Local game warden is a free resource you could tap into so that you get it right the first time?
I sent you a follow up email. It explains the dates I screwed up in the previous correspondence. Please accept my apologies and take a fresh look.
I was successful in downloading the clip that I wanted. Thanks.
