This man is national treasure if you are a car guy. if you enjoy building motors this man is like the pied piper, I would be like a sheep if I were ever to sit in a classroom with him. he is well spoken and knows his shit. I find him fascinating to listen to. I wish I was in this man's neck of the woods, bcuz honestly, if you like playing with race cars nothing, and I mean NOTHING is better than having a machinist who knows his shit and is trustworthy to help guide you thru the process of making choices about the building process when it comes to motors. period.

The amount of knowledge I am learning for this channel is crazy! Love this guy! Was looking at doing a 383 build and thought anything but forged was junk. Turns out I don't need forged for mild strip and street use. The hypereutectic will work just fine. 👌🏼

@@Myvintageiron7512 You caution against trusting a “balanced” stroker kit because some companies/manufacturers aren’t as accurate in their tolerances. Is Summit a company you’d recommend for a kit? Thank you for any advice.

Thank you for your time and effort. While at times, way more in depth than I predict I'll ever go, the upside is with your videos, I have an idea what to expect, how to plan and most valuable to me is when I'm having someone do this and paying them I know some of the process so I can keep from those extra add on Kanooder valve, head light fluid, pipe stretcher charges that pop up so thank you

I'm currently 6 weeks away from writing my journeyman's exam so in class now were tearing down our engines and rebuilding them (I'm doing a V6 out of a 2007 Buick Enclave lol, would love to do a V8 like this but for todays new techs we obviously have to learn with all the modern stuff of haha), your videos are very interesting and full of useful information. Its great study! lol

I myself would watch 2 hours of die grinding but that is the kind of nut I am. I love this kind of stuff. I understand mistakes. I have made many. Case point, push in Chevy head studs, big solid cams. Youth and inexperience, bent push rods and very steep gears in a daily driver to boot. To make it short great V-log. I think of the best improvements over the years, heart shape and quench and just head improvement overall. Are you going to do a port V-log? Thanks for the detailed build. BEST OF LUCK FROM SOUTH FLORIDA...

My 2000 silverado with a nearly 300 thousand mile LM7 has piston slap on every cold start since I bought it fifteen years and tens of thousands of miles ago. I just let it warm up a bit and take it easy for a few minutes. Buddy of mine had a WS6 trans am years ago and would crank it up on cold winter mornings and take off full throttle. I told him that it wasn't good for the engine but he insisted it ran so much better cold.

I just saved a 1980 Z28 Camaro from the crusher that was beat to death and put out in a salvage yard. Going to do a 93 octane 383 build in it. Not going to get crazy. The information here, especially about the balancing, will be incredibly valuable. If I can make 450 flywheel on it i'll be happy. I want it to be reliable.

good video--good info. I will use the hyper pistons for my LT-1 350 (1994) when i get her rebuilt next year. Still thinking, keep her the same bore and stroke or bring her up to a stroker motor, 383 and LT-4 cam. Chevy Police Intercepter.

I've run hypers in my dirt cars for years to 6-6500rpms with no problems. Of course as stated in th 1st vid a great balancing job goes a long way. Also piston slap sounds nothing like a knock really. It is a very unique sound as you said. Nice vids here. I've had 383s built for me and built my own 350s and 400s, but never my own 383. So I'm hoping these will help med get it right from the start.

The best factory engine is the 170 slant 6. it was designed from the ground up to be a engine that gets good gas mileage and still has enough power to get you from here to there. It's no hot rod, but will last a million miles easy. It's also a under square design which is why it's that way. They are well worth the history read. The 225 still has the longevity but is missing the mileage. It's a over square design. (it's also a bean counter engine, so go figure. Not a bad engine, but not as good as the 170)

more great information. the more I whatch of this build the more I want to start over with the one I built flying by the seat of my pants. I can't believe I've gotten over 5k miles out of it without it flying apart. Probably because I rarely rev it over 5k rpm. I did do some things right so far. I bought the right rotating assembly pre balanced but I didn't recheck it for acuressy.

I'm thinking of building a 383 but I have one question. The 350 that I have has a two piece rear main seal. I would like to put a one piece seal on it if possible. Is that something I can do? Also what brands do you recommend for a street stop third gen Camaro that This 383 will be in?

People always talk about pump vs race gas. Without differentiating between regular and premium pump gas, and the various octane numbers that different kinds of race gas can have, this doesnt mean anything to me.
What kind of pump gas? 87 octane? 91, or 93? 100 octane race gas? 110? Huge difference.

Longer stroke big bump in low and mid range torque in addition to the horsepower up top. I used to have a 383 in my iroc and much more noticeable torque. compared to my old 350 formula even with a mild cam.

Hi I had a question, I’m building my first 383 and didn’t realize it was bored over .030 already . I had already ordered the pistons for it so I just had it honed. After honing I check bore size and realized piston clearance is going to be around .003 . Is it ok to run that much on speed pro hypereutectic pistons ? Appreciate anyones imput.

Have a question I have a 74 nova I want to build a 383 its a street but I also want to race it I want a 383 with 475 HP to 500 HP was wondering with piston slap does that hurt a stock block like over time it will destroy my bottom end I saw a forged set for 1500 bucks and it has a forge crank and everything information would be grateful.

  • @496chevyrat
    @496chevyrat 7 років тому

You forgot to mention a "HUGE" advantage with the cast and hypereutectic pistons is a much shorter engine warm up time. With no piston slap you can run the engine for 1 to 2 minutes then drive away. Then the engine warms up faster and puts out less emissions.

You couldn't explain to the customer what was going to happen? I would have explained it to him very clearly what forged pistons were going to lead to and made him sign a wavier and liability release that the engine was going to knock and he was not going to like it. But hey kudos to you getting paid for doing the job twice and getting a free set of forged pistons.
