An interview that starts with A Monday can't go wrong. Devin doesn't mention The Hummer very often. Hearing him say he's very proud of it makes me like it even more. Amazing piece of work. Love how he gives a 10 minute answer.
Very interesting. Good on Devin for being honest with himself and his fans. Too many musicians simply do what they're told or what ever sells records. I'm not a SYL fan but Devin's a really cool dude.
I have tix for the 2010 sydney, Australia show.....can't wait!! what a sincere,honest interview. I love the heavy ass strapping stuff but i also love the other end of the spectrum..a true allrounder...Dev you rule!!
9:24, what he just said there was brilliance. I have only appreciated him more since the solo stuff. SYL was always decent, but by far his solo stuff appeals to me more. Devin is with out a doubt among the biggest influences of my life.
Thanx, I know I've listened to one track from "Ocean Machine". The one is "Things Beyond Things" and I I'll you, if the whole album is like that song it seems very promising!
It's Fantastic to see him talking about his time in The Wildhearts, one of my all time favourite bands. There's vids of Devin play live with them on youtiube, search for 'The Wildhearts Reading Festival' :)
when i FIRST learned of Devin back when i was little, i thought he was a mentally unstable teenager that wrote really epic music and was totally awesome. then when i learned he was a layed back chill dude my mind was blown. now i understand how he feels about the differences between him and his music. im pretty much the same way, too. its either old school death metal or melodic pwoer metal.
Its great how open Devin is about how he feels. I love his work & he seems like a cool guy as well. What he is saying here reminds me of what Maynard James Keenan from Tool must have come up against dealing with the "persona" of Tool. Just a random thought.
I hope he doesnt worry about losing fans, cuz, I mean... Well myself I've listened to SYL the most, but what I'm out for is his talent, and whatever feeling he tries to express, I'm convinced that he will do great!
i can really relate to the music he does, alot of my riffs sounds similar to his style of music´, mostly in the later albums in his carreer, not with SYL.
And he's freakin hot now! Seriously, the shaved head fits him very well! Not gonna talk about looks though. I only have "Terria" and I think that's pretty decent album. Any advice on which other Devin album to check out? Any experts?
I recommend "Ocean Machine!" But if you find your entrance to his style (where he sometimes hardly has any, positively) you should ( and will I am certain) buy all of his albums (DTB to SYL!)
I've listened to Devin throughout the ages and I think I've heard what he's trying to say. The revelations he had when his Century Media contract was up were fairly synchronized with my own at the time. The Ocean Machine: Biomech stuff, Devlab and Hummer are seriously worth a listen if you're unfamiliar with Dev as an artist. Wasn't crazy about Addicted and I thought Anneke bastardised most of the album but I'm sure Decon will be a lot better.
@Floskeknosk Infinity is a rather interesting record that goes on a very intense journey musically, lyrically. Check that one out. The solo stuff does paint a nice picture about his life in my opinion.
i wanna be bald and wear glasses now. thanks to this fucker im obsessed with baritone flying V's, so much im not spending a penny until his sig is released, we love you devy!
Strapping young lad was awesome for the same reason that Brendan Small is a genius with Dethklok. I saw DK live, and they are old, bald guys blasting away, laughing at themselves and us. Spinal Tap for those too serious about how "dark and evil" their music is. I work in a prison, and see REAL evil every day. The parody of death metal is hilarious. Music is supposed to be fun. Devin can do anything, including laugh at himself.
@emperor262626 - Perhaps it's because he exorcises his demons through his music. Perhaps if he didn't have music to release through, he might have taken a different path?
@Floskeknosk You must, I really mean must, get Addicted.. Basically, if you really get into him, your in trouble, coz he has over 20 albums that he has done..
@BluesMaddy Yeah, a female vocalist was undoubtedly a good move but I hate her voice. Anyone else would've been preferable. The girl on Ki who sings at the end of Trainfire is incredibly talented, has a beautiful voice and I think she contributes hugely.
while i respect devin townsend musically it's hard to believe that at the time this was recorded he was 37! fuck he hasn't aged well, probably from all the weed and alcohol.
Give the man a prize!! Definately water. He;s sober now and still is a GOD! Devin Rules!
Honesty. An unusual trait in the entertainment industry. There should be more people like this guy.
I'll listen to anything this guy creates, period.
Hence the diveristy he brings to all of his albums, you will never go bored with Devin Townsend
Awesome. Interesting interview. Time for Part 2. Hail Devin Townsend.
This is probably the best explanation of his career ever, and why he wants to do what he wants to do.
Wow Devin is a true musician. Lots of respect for him!
I recognise so much, personally, in this story. How great it is that this guy is doing what he wants, and can live a good, honest life because of it!
There you go folks, a musician tells his history, shows his evolution in 10 minutes. Excellent. Way to go Devin.
glad this guy gets so much respect now. seems very honest and down to earth
There is no other musician that has ever inspired me as much as Devin Townsend.
An interview that starts with A Monday can't go wrong. Devin doesn't mention The Hummer very often. Hearing him say he's very proud of it makes me like it even more. Amazing piece of work. Love how he gives a 10 minute answer.
Simply Inspirational...
Thank you Devin for your honesty...

Devin is an outstanding artist and a very pleasant person! This guy has my respect )
Great interview.
9:24, what he just said there was brilliance.
I have only appreciated him more since the solo stuff. SYL was always decent, but by far his solo stuff appeals to me more. Devin is with out a doubt among the biggest influences of my life.
looking foward for his next album, addicted was amazing.
great interview!!!!! thank you for upload!!!
I love this guy. I met him in person. He's really nice~
I can respect him for always doing what his heart told him.
I can relate to Devin on so many levels.
Thanx, I know I've listened to one track from "Ocean Machine". The one is "Things Beyond Things" and I I'll you, if the whole album is like that song it seems very promising!

Ahhhh I can't wait for his new album :D
so proud he comes from the same streets i do
when i FIRST learned of Devin back when i was little, i thought he was a mentally unstable teenager that wrote really epic music and was totally awesome. then when i learned he was a layed back chill dude my mind was blown. now i understand how he feels about the differences between him and his music. im pretty much the same way, too. its either old school death metal or melodic pwoer metal.
I Always Wonder how a Such Calm Guy like DT make music so extreme like SYL, REAL TALENT
Its great how open Devin is about how he feels. I love his work & he seems like a cool guy as well.
What he is saying here reminds me of what Maynard James Keenan from Tool must have come up against dealing with the "persona" of Tool. Just a random thought.

really good interview :)
The Yoda Of Music :)
What a really nice, honest interview :)
i can really relate to the music he does, alot of my riffs sounds similar to his style of music´, mostly in the later albums in his carreer, not with SYL.
Devin will never die
god hes a fucking genious, just able to emotionally connect to his music...something you hardly see at all in modern music Devin is awsome XD
And he's freakin hot now! Seriously, the shaved head fits him very well! Not gonna talk about looks though. I only have "Terria" and I think that's pretty decent album. Any advice on which other Devin album to check out? Any experts?
From restaurant to Steve Vai's band. Unbelievable:]
I recommend "Ocean Machine!"
But if you find your entrance to his style (where he sometimes hardly has any, positively) you should ( and will I am certain) buy all of his albums (DTB to SYL!)
@TehBuhmDiggeee The Ki singer - Che Aimee Dorval. She's on Facebook. Fabulous voice, sings on various tracks on that album, not just Trainfire.
Devin owns! \m/
"thank you sir...its good to know that we have at least one true music fan in here"
Brilliant. Dev rules.
he always gives the longest answers hahaha. love dev
¿what is the name of the song in the begin?
I've listened to Devin throughout the ages and I think I've heard what he's trying to say. did he say "tour with Opeth"? :O
I love how he turned down a scholarship. I don't know about his, but my parents would flip shit.
Keep doing what YOU want, Devin! :D
"and then I ended up on a couch, with a san pelegrino, talking to morow" that was hilarious lol
THE master
@Floskeknosk
Infinity is a rather interesting record that goes on a very intense journey musically, lyrically. Check that one out. The solo stuff does paint a nice picture about his life in my opinion.
yeah wildhearts are awesome
Devo!!! My hero :-))
wats the intro song?
So weird seeing him without the skullet
"what I ended up becoming popular for... was being an asshole... and so I got very good at it!" Lol :D
6:10
I didn't forget, Devin.
i wanna be bald and wear glasses now. thanks to this fucker im obsessed with baritone flying V's, so much im not spending a penny until his sig is released, we love you devy!
@ItsZebraMan music and crazyness I will make,yes!
He is wearing the same things in all videos :)
lol I saw him at that Opeth tour, he was high as shit. He was good but seemed a bit on edge, makes sense now.
yeah, Alien and Ziltoid the Omniscient
@blgengin yeah he owns maybe 4 outfits
@demigod325
lol, not so much, any more =P
@thrasher90 Like a lot of truly gifted musicians, he doesnt see himself that way ( i think).. So no he wont lose us, but he might think so anyway..
Strapping young lad was awesome for the same reason that Brendan Small is a genius with Dethklok. I saw DK live, and they are old, bald guys blasting away, laughing at themselves and us. I can so see why he left syl now.
@TehBuhmDiggeee Really? I thought she had a really beautiful voice, and that her vocals really helped contrast Devin's angry vocals.
@fyuuor he aged better then one of my buddies.... he's 22 balding with grey hair it's fuckin crazy
@Floskeknosk You must, I really mean must, get Addicted..
Basically, if you really get into him, your in trouble, coz he has over 20 albums that he has done..
i try to see "new" devin but i only see the screaming devin :/
@4thbeast I know he drinks near beers
:Talking to Morrow (Tomorrow)
@BluesMaddy Yeah, a female vocalist was undoubtedly a good move but I hate her voice. Anyone else would've been preferable. The girl on Ki who sings at the end of Trainfire is incredibly talented, has a beautiful voice and I think she contributes hugely.
WHO THE FUCK DISLIKED THIS ?!?
he cut his hair
@emperor262626 bipolar, and btw, im calmed too, and i write thrash and death, if you feel it, doesnt matter how you ate.
while i respect devin townsend musically it's hard to believe that at the time this was recorded he was 37! fuck he hasn't aged well, probably from all the weed and alcohol.
@Ne1s0n64
you can hit like and it will change.... do it, do it :D
For my taste SYL is too heavy for me. DTP is the perfect blend of all things Devin IMHO.
@pablox875 A Monday, from Ki.
@SuperJosephVincent My brother is 29 and is almost bald, ain't male pattern baldness a bitch?
he doesn't look as fierce without his skullet XD
@emperor262626
Calm? Not naturally. You know he takes meds for bipolar disorder right? xD
Accidentally hit the dislike button...fuck.
