@@wayne1959 Most people won't go out. I am not all that bothered and often don't even use bug spray. I also have a bug jacket that I seldom use. What I don't like is how they attack my dog. The go for her eyes and belly where there is no hair. There is no way she would wear a bug jacket.
My labby (Daisy) loves to be out there with me, but hates the bugs. When they are bad, she is happy to get back into the truck. When I get home and her eyes are all swollen from the bites, I catch heck from my wife. Last time I was camping with Daisy, she knew she would get relief in the tent. I made the mistake of putting her in and trying to metal detect nearby. She opened the screen door by herself (nice long tear from her nails) in the bug screen. $700 4 season tent. Ahhh!
Finally, another rock video!!don' t get me wrong, i love the paterns on your silver ore rocks, but those are metal detecting videos..i' m more of a rock guy!great finds!thanx for sharing!oh, and those bugs are terible to watch up close..i' m here in greece trying to save some drops of blood from these suckers but the canadian ones seem even deadlier!last thing i'm saying is between the two of you i like daisy the most...! ;)
Exciting finds. Without looking it up, did the glaciers not hit your section of Ontario? I ask as to find anything close other than cobbles here in central Minnesota, I would have to dig down through 600 feet of glacial till.
This area was once higher than the Himalayas. I think I spelled that correctly. LOL They were eroded over the eons to almost flat. During the last glacial age, the ice was over 1 mile thick. When it left, the ground rose up in spots and therefore these hills with exposed rock. A relatively short distance south is all glacial till and the bedrock is deep. Where I live is on an old moraine and my water well is still in at 158'.

It is difficult to remove apatite from calcite without breaking it. On the other hand, sometimes, it just falls out. There is no chemical way that I know to do this without harming the apatite too. I have tried various mechanical methods with limited success.
You are SO true! :) Where I live now (west of Norway) we don't have mosqitos, only knot (the tiny black ones) and someplaces a lot of them. My first 35 years I lived in towns with enough mosqitos, we call them mygg, and I do NOT miss the mosqitos at all LOL So I will "enjoy" them through the screen, totally without the smelly spray. I DO feel sorry for you and your sweet dog tho

I understand how good it is to be outside :) I have been on crutches for 4 years, waiting on hipreplacement now, and am looking so much to be able to walk again, in the forrest and at all :) Norway is nice and have many simmilarities with parts of Canada. It all depends on where in Norway/Canada you are. Your channel is great!
It takes a while to recover from hip replacement, but the surgery is usually successful. I wish you the best of luck. Losing your mobility is awful. I have heard of something fairly new here, with most people seeing an improvement...with almost no risk or averse affects. A local knee/hip specialist has been doing it to help people who have a long wait for surgery. It is called Platelet-Rich Plasma. Might be worthwhile asking your specialist about it. All they do is separate plasma from a bit of your blood and inject it into the joint. The whole process takes about 15 minutes.
Can you do a video of how you clean the crystals from the rock after? I'm starting to really love crystal hunting and live right near a quary but I'm not sure what to do with what I find!
Sure. I have shown it in some of my collecting videos, but maybe in spring I will do one dedicated to various methods I use for cleaning the samples. No surprise, it starts with soap and water followed by either brushing or use a fabric gun. Sometimes, do a few things different such as car spray wash bigger pieces or to remove mica from garnet and some minerals like to be soaked for a while. Then there are some acids to remove stains or unwanted minerals. There. No need for a video. LOL

I have cleaned them and they didn't look much different on video. I probably needed to film them in different light because most of the crystals were dark. They look way better in person than I was able to capture on the camera.
meMiner aah i see i see, lol i have that issue with some labradorite pieces and this one chunk of (i think it's smokey elestial quartz) lol i can never get perfect lighting on them for pictures but they look epic in person :)

bigger pieces like this one I'd usually hit with the 12lb sledge once or twice, tends to blow up less smaller stuff. some of those look like maybe epidote? possibly mebe some richterite?
For sure some fluor-richterite. Busting the big stuff with a sledge is sometimes a good idea, although I find it usually fractures any apatite before the calcite splinters.
mmm, yes, apatite is so sensitive. up here I deal with quartz and fluorite veins (never found apatite up here), so in that case using a sledge to persuade big boulders to open along the veins is more appropriate. You're right though, when I tried to apply that technique down in apatite country, I did blow a lot of apatite up. Your boulder already looked pretty eager to relent though. A good smack with a sixy might have got you those last few clusters as one or two bits. Ever hit up the Smart/Lost mine? By far the best quality (size, durability and termination) apatite I ever collected came from there. Though the gemmiest I have comes from Titanite Hill. Also got some pretty blue apatite at Canoe Lake.
I love the Millar property, although it is a long drive for me. I know someone who found large zircon. Until now, it was the best apatite that I have seen in Ontario.

Was going to do some stromatolite as well (so far it looks amazing in the tumbler after first 4 grits, I need more though before I can keep going, hence going to cut more), but I ran out of not being hot.
The thing about rock hounding is it's always interesting, an adventure, treasure hunting but you don't know what you will find. Upon finding those nice items you clean them , view them , twist and turn them in the light, look at what if anything needs to be cut and trimmed, look again then put them on another shelf in tight formation to gather dust, or you could sell them on Facebook.
I belong to Walker Club (University of Toronto) and KRFC (Peterborough Zoo). I recommend that you join the closest one to where you either live or work. Otherwise, look at what they do as some clubs are known for their field trips and others for lapidary equipment, etc. It all depends on what interests you most. The thing I like is the people. Every club has some experts that are happy to share their knowledge, which is invaluable.

Clay can be tough digging and cleaning. A few years ago, I had a placer gold claim where the best gold was in clay. It was work to separate the gold from the clay and if you weren't careful, one little glob of clay could rob the sluice of the afternoon's work.

She would hate wearing anything and would not understand it is for bugs. Heck, she went into my tent last year when the bugs got bad, then decided she had to join me and tore thru the screen/fly to get out. We had a bug problem after that. ;-)
I know a guy who was alone ice fishing on Simcoe. He was into some nice lake trout and whitefish. He posted a video and the next Saturday there were over 300 people all around his ice hut.
Hahahaha!!! How to fish out a spot in one day! That's why I love the North, I think I've seen maybe 6 huts at the same time in my entire field of view on Superior. There's like 10,000 fish per fisherman.
I really struggled with various cameras on my older videos. I upgraded but have to watch out for scratching the lens on my newer cameras. Next purchase will be the new GoPro which has an internal gimble and better audio. It will be nice to have something that is waterproof. I am also looking for another camera that I can put onto a tripod. Suggestions are always welcome.

When I am finding clusters, I leave the individual crystals behind. Can only carry out so much. ;-)

For her head, I put it on my hands then rub her, so not to get it in her eyes. Still, it makes her sneeze.

I make a vinager and peppermint oil spray I use it on Zoe and myself, works as well as any , give it a try.

I'm finding septarian geodes and have been trying to get certain crystal beds to break free but they keep falling apart when I try.
That is a problem when the host rock is as hard or harder than the crystals. Also calcite makes it difficult because it flexes and the crystals don't.
@@meMiner I have been getting better at getting the nice pieces to stay intact while removing host rock. Practice.

Daisy hates bug spray. Sometimes though it is necessary to do something to help her out. I hate looking at her when she has live eyelashes (bugs).

Hammer and chisel for clusters. A shovel or hand spade for individual crystals. Sometimes a classifier/sieve.

She would hate wearing anything and would not understand it is for bugs. Heck, she went into my tent last year when the bugs got bad, then decided she had to join me and tore thru the screen/fly to get out. We had a bug problem after that. ;-)

I know a guy who was alone ice fishing on Simcoe. He was into some nice lake trout and whitefish. He posted a video and the next Saturday there were over 300 people all around his ice hut.
Hahahaha!!! How to fish out a spot in one day! That's why I love the North, I think I've seen maybe 6 huts at the same time in my entire field of view on Superior. There's like 10,000 fish per fisherman.
I've watched a bunch of your videos and only negative I see is you need a better camera! I'm pretty sure about that. Otherwise, nice job.
I really struggled with various cameras on my older videos. I upgraded but have to watch out for scratching the lens on my newer cameras. Next purchase will be the new GoPro which has an internal gimble and better audio. It will be nice to have something that is waterproof. I am also looking for another camera that I can put onto a tripod. Suggestions are always welcome.
@@meMiner I'd make sure any new camera has a good zoom that will focus clearly on closeup shots since you do that a lot to show a rock up close.

i feel like i the only one in this comment section who might have difficulties telling apart milky quartz and calcite...
Sometimes, they can look very similar. Just remember that you can scratch calcite with a knife and it bubbles in HCL acid. Not quartz.

I have never found a ruby. I have been in spots where they are supposed to be, but "only" found gold. Congrats on your 2 carrot.
