I live in Nevada. If you fly over in a plane, its featureless. If you drive, its beautiful. It's absolutely mind blowing at sunrise, sunset, or during thunderstorms as the shadows fleetingly reveal the secret vistas of the landscape.
As far as I know, US 50 is the only 2-lane road that completely traverses this country, from just outside of Baltimore, all the way to Sacramento, California. Drove the entire thing back in 1971, in my `65 Buick Riviera Gran Sport. That was a great trip ! The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Who, Tull, Yes, Creedence, and about 30 others were all in heavy rotation in the 8-track player :-)
Thank you for indicating the towns we're passing through. I wish all video drive posters would follow your example!
My Grandfather was born in Fallon. His Dad & Uncle had a stage coach company that was involved in the last Wells, Fargo & Co. payroll robbery that wiped them out. They all moved to San Jose.
This was in 1908.
Rick Le Blanc - I luv the history of some of these comments
Was stationed in Fallon 69/71. Nice lil town
I have traveled that road. It not the loneliest. I have traveled through the Dakotas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas. On some occasions, I did not encounter another vehicle for an hour. We are fortunate that there are still some sparsely populated areas.
I drove Hwy 50 from Sacramento to Gunnison, Co. in 1973. It was an epic drive. So much so that I did it again in 2001 and once again in 2005. I agree that everyone should drive at least a part of Hwy 50 once in their life. For anyone interested in geology and driving, I recommend the series of books called "Roadside Geology". Each book covers the geology of a state along the interstates and state hwys and is referenced by mile marker.
I visited the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in the early 1990s. It was an amazing canyon, and even during the height of the summer tourist season, there were hardly any other cars there. I drove from viewpoint to viewpoint and marveled at the depth of the canyon. That place is definitely worth seeing.
Bought that at Great Basin NP also John McPhee's book "Basin and Range" for an understanding of the larger picture. Used the first a little eg going up to Twin Falls.
You might want to look up the Lincoln Hwy, Hwy 50, and see how the Army, under General Pershing built this piece of road, on the Lincoln Hwy! Contact the NVDOT before you drive it, and they will send you a punch-card, where as you go through all the cities on the route, you get your card rubber-stamped in each one. Mail the completed card to the Governor, and you will get a wall-mountable certificate, with your name on it, that says you Survived the Loneliest Road in America.
Do you have MORE INFO on this you speak of? :)
@@RVingwithG Like he said, contact the NVDOT, they would be able to tell you everything.
Made the trip on 50 twice, in a Toyota 4runner with my Tonkanese cat from Missouri to Ukiah CA., she was 17 when she passed a few years later, still cannot bring myself to watch the videos of our road trip......
I would have pulled over and made a cup of coffee, that is my kind of road! Thanks for another great one!
+smacdiesel i took a couple breaks... pulling the u -haul trailer was the spoiler
I took US Hwy 50 over the Labor Day 2018 weekend and it was the most relaxing drive I've ever experienced. On Hwy 50, there's no turnoffs or junctions to look for; there's nothing to distract from the scenery. It's like sailing a boat on wheels, or perhaps it's a magic carpet ride! For scenery, this is by-far the best "basin and range" highway I've driven, and small towns like Eureka & Austin add a touch of old-fashioned Americana along the way. Best gas mileage I've ever had too, just putting along & soaking it all up.
Looks like a fabulous road to practice my driving skill!!
Sir---------in the summer of '77, my late-wife & I took US 50, going back to Denver, from LA. wE DECIDED TO JUST TRY IT & SEE , & WE ABSOLUTELY FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. There's a part of me, that many times wishes, I could live in a small town like Fallon & Ely Nevada. I'm a big city boy, but I love the small towns on old Route 66, & on US 50. We cut over to Hwy. 285, through the Mountains of Colorado, & finally back to Denver, in 2+ days. We drove our '70 Ford Maverick, a 6 Cylinder engine, with A/C & Automatic Tranny, with new tires, a full check up in LA, & we never had a problem. ----------One of my very best memories, ever. I used to love to drive. ---------------Sadly now, I don't drive anymore. It saddens me, but at 74 y/o, it's just not smart or safe. --------------------------Wolfsky9, 74 y/o
Absolutely beautiful country as an Australian I really have to comment on your roads ...they are the best in the world
Then don't ever drive in California; your impression of "best roads" will be shot to hell in an instant.
It depends on which state you are in
Missus and I drove a camper van from Darwin to Perth, nearly 4000km counting side trips, in one month... roads not too shabby at all, until one took turn offs for campsites 'off the beaten track' (90 mile beach being a good example.) when it became just a semi-graded dirt road. Overall, though, a magnificent experience which we intend to repeat, maybe in the opposite direction from Perth to Cairns. Termite mounds as folk art are pretty cool and amusing, and the termites don't seem to mind!
Gary Quelch Thank you Gary, I’d have to agree. 😂✌🏽🇺🇸
My wife and I drove this in Sep of 1996 from Jackson Hole Wyo, overnight at the Parsonage House in Eureka and onto Lake Tahoe. Fantastic drive even bought a "Highway 50 Loneliest Road in America" tee shirt in Austin. Very few cars we saw on this hwy but unfortunately one was the Sheriff from Eureka and would you believe he was drivng a Camaro . And yes after following us for about 10 miles,he pulled us over when coming into Eureka. Did not get a ticket for speeding but got me for driving in the center of the road..Icing on the "Cake"....Fantastic time back then...and a fantastic drive on lonely 50. Can remember this spectacular trip like yesterday day.. Parsonage House in Eureka like an overnight dream..
Gorgeous scenery, thanks for posting this. It's so nice to be able to see these places that I'll otherwise never be able to see!
i love driving these type of highways, its was beautiful
did this highway with my parents back in 1977and it was definitely very lonely during those days
The US routes are the way to go. Especially out west, but from about Ohio on out to California US 50 is really great.
I love the "Two Lane Blacktop" because that's where you really see America. Coming into and out of the towns and cities along the way.
Wow feeling so peace to watch this lonely road...
the MOST BEAUTIFUL ROAD on the planet
Agreed.
The part of Nevada not many people see. Loving it man.
My wife and I drove it and arrived in Ely spent the night. In the morning we were snowed in for the day. Glad we made it to Ely.
not so lonely..when i drove it a few years ago,for about 10 miles a cop followed me in a chevy camaro, when driving into Eureka he gave me a ticket for driving on the center line.He was hoping to get me for speeding but i had a hunch he could be a cop.
We stayed at the beautiful Parsonage Cottage in Eureka an old chuch turned into this magnificient cottage wine cellar and all..Hope u picked up your souvenir shirt "lonliest highway in America ". fantastic road to drive
Yeah, doncha just love when cops patrol desolate roads for the sole purpose of catching speeders? I'm normally in their corner, but sometimes, it seems like they needlessly go out of their way just for the sake of writing tickets to give themselves something to do and to look good to their bosses. It's as if it's one big game to them. If someone's tearing down I-80 through Reno at 100 mph, that's one thing. But to sit with a radar/lidar gun on, say, US 375 between Warm Springs and Rachel (or any other stretch of road in the middle of nowhere where you can do 100 without even realizing it), that's ridiculous.
I just drove this road from west too east last week on my way to Tennessee. Drove all the way from Sacramento. This is probably my 10th trip on this road and I love it. Beautiful views, great road and solitude. This was my favorite section of the entire 2300 mile drive. I will drive it again next year just for the fun of it. I especially love Ely and Great Basin National Park .
I think everyone should drive the Great Basin at least once... amazing
Did u move to Tennessee
Also the friendliest road in Nevada unless you are an Asshat, most of the people who live here are just plain common folk who like to hear of other things from far away places, like Reno, or San Francisco. I live near the old Ghost town of Belmont Nevada, so Fallon and Austin are the go to places for me. I love the serenity and the quiet of the mountainous area that I live in, wouldn't trade it for anyplace else. Thanks for the great video of our area, and stay safe out there.
One of the best videos I've ever watched! Thank you!
thank you
US 50 is also on my bucket list, thanks for sharing your experience there. Happy Travels 🍺
Up here in N Idaho, this is on my road list going south ... thanks for a nice adventure
Half of Canada is like this. Once you leave the major cities and go a few hours up north you can drive for weeks without seeing a town or civilization.
Yes, absolutely no one, fact I doubt if God has been in Canada for centuries. :) So pray before you leave.
Yes but it's Canada and with the boy pm Trudeau running the frozen wasteland I'll pass.
You think it was "lonely" in 16, you should've seen it 66
drove several times on a big truck .loved it everytime
I used this road often when I was trucking. One of my favorites!
Neat video. Brought back memories of driving a 1990 Ford Festiva from Cali back to Iowa. The little Festiva didn't have enough power and would only pull the passes in 3d gear. An older couple at Fallon told us it would be best to not drive in the dark............it was open range and the cattle would come out and lay down on the warm pavement. They said the last thing you want to do is hit an angus cow laying in your lane with her back to you. Festiva against cow, nobody wins that one.
Bohica1966 I say your wrong , there would be a winner ..... the new car company you would be buying your new car from lol !!!
ok, here's my story of Route 50.
I'm from the UK and 3 friends and I all flew into San Fran to hire Harley's and take a 1800 mile road trip taking in Fortuna, the Redwoods, Route 50, Lake Tahoe, a couple of National Parks, down to Monument Valley and finally into Vegas where we were going to fly back from.
Day 2 of our trip was the part where we took Route 50, and trust me this place is BLEAK. Stunning landscapes but nothing apart from distant mountains, scrub and (probably) snakes.
With the highway being so empy we took turns in blasting out in front of the rest of the pack (4 of us in all) without our helmets and enjoying the sun.
Who wouldn't???
The guy who "organised" the trip mentioned in passing where we were heading motel name wise, but nothing more and didn't inform the other members of the party either. Great huh? Our phones weren't compatible in the US and even if they were I seriously doubt you'd manage anything resembling a signal out there.
So when I went blasting on ahead I must have gone straight past our turning which I think (with hindsight) was the 379.
After a while when they hadn't caught me up I pulled to the side of the road and waited for the guys.
And waited.
And waited.
After an hour I realised they weren't coming. Now Harleys are huge gas guzzlers so in the middle of nowehere with only a third of a tank and no map nor sat nav on my phone, I had no choice but to aim for the nearest town. This was Ely. There i would fill the bike up and ask if they knew where the motel was I luckily managed to remember the name of when the "organiser" mentioned it earlier in the day.
When I got to Ely I pulled into the first gas station on fumes and asked if they knew where the motel "whatever" it was called was. They did!!!!!....... but they also said I was about 100 miles away from it and it's near some old mine. They gave me some basic directions so I set off again back the way I came, it was now getting dark. And cold. As I rode back along the 50 I saw a sign warning travellers of hitchhikers and that due to a maximum security penitentiary being in the area that hikers could be escaped criminals. This just keeps on getting better!
I kept on going getting more and more tired and nervous as I went.
I was now freezing cold. I only had jeans, a t-shirt and a lightweight non-waterproof coat on.
Now, this was 2014 or 15 and the year of torrential rain and flash floods throughout Nevada and as I turned onto the 379 the heavens opened. The storm was wild!
Torrential rain, thunder and probably the most violent lightning I'd ever experienced! The rain was coming at me horizontally and at force. My helmet was open faced so I was getting blinded by the rain as it hit my eyes with enough force to make them bloodshot. I had no riding goggles only sunglasses and they'd be useless now it was dark.
I could barely see but there was nowhere to stop and it was getting colder. The lack of vision meant I could only do 15mph maximum as I was riding blind, with either scrub at one side of the very narrow road or huge drops on the other! This I did for a couple of hours. 😳 😳 😳
I was seriously thinking of giving up and potentially sleeping rough somewhere but EVERYWHERE was under half a foot of rainwater!!!
In the total pitch black I saw some distant lights behind me. As they got closer I realised it was a state trooper in a large 4x4! I'm saved!!
As he pulled me over he asked me my name and said that my friends had rang the Police as I had gone missing 5 or 6 hours earlier. He said he knew where they where staying and if I followed him we'd be there in about 20 minutes.
So I set off again. The cop didn't realise I could barely see and shot off ahead at about 60mph, he stopped for me and asked why I was going so slowly, I explained and he apologised but added that 20 minutes would be about an hour at my pace, or lack of. He shone a torch in my eyes and could see my eyes were bloodied.
I finally arrived at the motel (a weird soul-less faux retro 50's style thing, with a chequered floor and red seating near a mine) around midnight. (If anyone knows this motel please let me know the name of it so I can look it up!)
I was freezing cold, soaked to the skin, could barely see and was absolutely exhausted. On reflection I could have easily died out there that night, as the tempertaures drop dramatically in the desert and the ensuing storm didn't exactly help.
The morale of the story is if you are travelling this Route MAKE SURE all your party know EXACTLY what the route is - oh, and get a better organiser as a friend! ;)
My Mother lived in N. Cali...I drove this one time and the second time with my friends...yes Pony Express route for sure...great ride...after Carson City...the road was too gorgous for words...hidden lake then Tahoe(I swam in when young...)Thanks...great memory...
I was just there! Drove from Los Angeles to Twin Falls via Hwy 50. Stayed one night in the Ely Motel 6 - the skeeziest motel I've ever stayed in. The views along this highway are breathtaking - miles and mikes of gorgeous snowy peaks. I really enjoyed this drive.
Skeeziest? Is that like sleazy? :-)
Want to see Sleazy? Stay at the Clown Motel in Tonopah.. Frick'n Clowns are scary!!
@@kenuber4766 The only saving grace for Tonopah is that mining museum up on the hill. The rest of the town can blow away, & nobody would miss it :-)
@@terryballard4674 Boy you sure got that right. LOL. Spent 2,5 yrs there working on a Solar farm outside of town.
I coasted down from Austin Summit, through the town, to the Reese Valley on a sled in 1946.
Iguana
Awesome video!! It felt as if I was driving myself. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for sharing this ride with you Brother.
Been there, drove that, on my way back to North Carolina from my Route 66 trip driving my Mustang convertible with the top down.
This is on my bucket list I drive trucks for living and I always wanted to Drive across it
We drove from fallon nv to all the way to iowa to see bridges of madison county .... its just beautiful drive .. i will do that again sometimes in near future .
Thanks for refreshing my memories 🌻🌻
Town founder; hey were in the middle of know where...lets build here!
More like - I think there's silver here. Let's build a fire.
Mining towns
Your presentations are EXCELLENT and very viewer friendly!
Extremely beautiful. Thank you for your hard work bringing this to us. Cape Town.
Loneliest road I've ever been on was the stretch of I-40 from Amarillo, Tx. to Tucumcari, NM. We didn't see a single vehicle the entire trip.
Studa Baker Try US 212 From BELLE FOURCHE (Yes, You Pronounce The R In FOURCHE, Hence Like Number 4) SD To CROW AGENCY GARRYOWEN MT!!
I was in Amarillo to see an old friend, that place was yuck.
@Dave Smith That's what I'm wondering. It's a pretty major route across country. I drove it when I was relocating when I was in the Navy, but I returned home for my 30 days of leave (plus a few more for travel) from Virginia to Las Vegas (my home town). There's plenty of traffic, not just from freight semi trucks, but passenger cars as well.
Lol,.I just traveled that stretch,..not many travelers to be sure,..but still lots of trucks
@@jimmym3352 I agree. I have driven four times on I-40 in that stretch. It is fairly busy, as you have written. Once, in my case, a poorly-fastened sheet (plywood or steel, I am not sure) flew off from another vehicle. Fortunately, it did not hit another vehicle or person!
I've made this trip, after I served my country. And the whole time, I was wondering why we couldn't share the land with Native Americans.
we do
What ever we do it’s not enough,
Because Advanced Civilizations always dominate Stone Aged(at best) cultures..Theyve been given vast tracts of land and done Nothing with it ,butt wallow in their own misery..
I've traveled US50 since I was a baby in the 50's in Ohio. Abandoned motels, drive in theaters, I even remember a playhouse built to look like a shoe along it. It's history.
i did the "Loneliest Highway in America" in 1993, west to east going to Boulder, Co.
i stopped at a ruined bar/tavern because i was so lonely, lol, and there was a hot mineral stream flowing near the property so i took my shoes and socks off and dipped them for many minutes --- wonderful.
+SKPjoe Coursegold nice
No mention of the huge copper, gold and silver mines that stretch out just off the highway. Most people are unaware of what it takes to build the things that require metals. If you travel this highway stop at Ruth Nevada and see the Robinson Mine and out toward Eureka the Alligator Ridge Mine and the Bald Mountain Mine. You will be astounded.
Thanks, been to Ely, stayed overnight at casino. $15 full hook up. $60 for the armed bandits! Good Video! Yes, top off gas, I didn't tell my wife, but we drove into a gas station on fumes. Gage showed E for over 50 miles. "OH Yeh, honey, just checking the gages, everythings OK!"
+Gene Smith you are sneeky gene
Lucky for me, I would have never heard the end of it! Sometimes we shop price and find that we end up with no gas. Thanks!
Gene, did you ever tell her?
Whoa! One good thing about our van - it has a front AND rear tank!
Used to back haul out of Sparks going to Denver love this road a couple good eating spots very little traffic usually ran on to somebody to run and BS with most the way across, Western Colorado is absolutely beautiful in the evening Sun.
Awesome video. That drive will have to wait another year.
Some of these towns look like they should be in a movie. The sky looked beautiful.
My daughter is in tamba,Florida. She asked me to visit usa. I told her if i come take me to west coast road. In this list i will add highway 50.also😄😄
I hope you meant Tampa.
Thank you
I loved this road- I loved getting out of the car at night- no human lights, just stars and silence.
Hwy 395 in Oregon between Lakeview and Burns. I guarantee you there's literally nothing between those towns on that stretch of highway except a couple of rest stops. At night you'll be surprised to see another vehicle for a good hour or so. I should know, I've driven that route. Best fill up for gas in either Lakeview or Burns as there's literally no gas stations in between.
Told my wife that one day after she retires I want to drive cross country from here in Massachusetts just north of Boston to Los Angeles to visit our daughter and her husband. I’m already retired so I’m just waiting for her.
I'm with you on that one, but eventhough I only have a few years to go, I might not wait that long!
I live in Boston and am retiring in about a year and than we are hitting the road as well.
Our last trip West was to Idaho. We live in Southern NH. Drove a 2010 C-6 Corvette. Great trip in a great car. My wife and I drove to Alaska and back in 1967 just after I got back from Nam. Best detox ever.
US 50 interstate looks awesome! Thanks for sharing
+Island Rider Jayrocpile its a nice drive
Great road trip, great video. Thanks for sharing.
one of the best road trip i every took
Must make this trip just beautiful! Thanks for taking us along be safe.
+Roger Dole thanks roger
Thanks for the video. My Bucket List is to round trip the ENTIRE length of US 50 from Ocean City, Maryland to Sacramento, California and back.
Orioles Fan - Just do it, will be a great experience - I’ve traveled cross country 4 times taking different routes each time. America the Beautiful 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
@@jolenaagapisou3803 So true. Open spaces impart such a humbling experience.
Thanks for bringing back some really good memories
I drive from Las Vegas to Boise on the Great Basin Highway.. never ever let my tank get below 1/2.. enjoyed this video..
Back in the '80s I dropped off a horse for someone in Cedar City, Utah and came back to California via Hwy. 50. My truck had a leak in the radiator and one tire was developing an ominous bulge in the sidewall, so I was a little tense during the trip - couldn't enjoy it as much as I normally would have. I was surprised at the number of big mountain ranges the highway crosses. I'd cross one, and see snow-capped peaks off in the distance across the desert, and think "Aha! There are the Sierras!" Only to find that no, the next range wasn't the Sierras, but another mountain range. I saw lots of creosote plant circles in the desert. I've heard they're some of the oldest plants on earth, next to the bristlecone pines. It was mid-summer and I could go for HOURS without seeing another car on the road. No cellphone or GPS back then, just a CB radio and a Thomas Bros. road map. Finally got the tire replaced in Carson City, and spent the night at a campground in South Lake Tahoe. It was a memorable trip, and I hope to drive that road again someday.
Thanks for sharing your trip, relaxing, and real nice.
Brilliant. I had a great trip too. Many thanks. Never knew parts of Nevada were so high.
Thank you for sharing! Great job.
Loved this ❤️ video. My late wife and I drove this in 1989, in a 71 Ford LTD car, headed to California.
We really enjoyed it. Very fun drive.
Thanks so much for sharing this.
Retired and never been the RV route. Your vid got me wanting to. Enjoyed it.
Fantastic! This road trip has been on my bucket list for years.
Real Rugged Nevada very scenic.
good video!
your video really conveys the wide open spaces that we in england can only dream of ,thankyou.
Richard - the wild, American West, no other place like it on earth - lol
How enjoyable! Thank you.
Thanks for sharing your journey. That drive is on my bucket list. So pretty, so peaceful. 😀
I'm heading back out there in May for the first time in almost 30 yrs. Compared to the roads over here in the UK your desert roads are a dream. Can't wait to get back there again, and hopefully my wife will appreciate that part of the world as much as I do
As . a trucker from PA. I made a round trip out thru Fallon. Beautiful little oasis in the desert. Never got to travel U.S.50 but ive heard its a fun drive except in winter. Thanks for sharing your fjourney. Be safe out there.
My wife and I drove it years ago and spent the night in Ely,...u keep going and u will reach Austin...tiny tiny and on the “Loneliest Road In America”...u will see salt flats too...
Hello Russ! I watched your video of the Loneliest Hwy in America US Route 50 and it looks spectacular! I have to all of the Utah National Parks and next time I'm there I will drive that scenic highway to Carson City and head south to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. Great video Russ!
Sure did enjoy your video.. Was station in Fallon from.69-71. Thanks so much for your video. Traveled hwy 50 east from Fallon 5 days a week for work when I was stationed in Fallon.
Thank you! Please add more videos.
I'll put it on my bucket list. Thank you for the great video and narration.
Ok, you win. You've made me want to see that road. Yes, the views are beautiful and the open road is calling me. Seeing new places, seeing new things and meeting new people too. The open road, that's the place to be, it's grey and black ribbons on calling me. And I am stuck here.
Thank you so much for this video. You actually showed the scenery every other rver just shows their face and sometimes a tiny box with scenery so you basically just get to hear them talk about it.
I made this trip on a motorcycle, what a blast.
Gotta be awesome on a bike!
Just discovered your channel wow nice drive , I’m riding my exercise bike while watching it makes it so much more interesting and see places I’ve never been , thanks for sharing.i hope you make them longer drives for us all to go with you on your adventures. This was way to short lol
A great video, thanks for sharing it. Lots of fun and a lovely voice too! Well done. We stayed in Eureka when we went, Ruby Hill Hotel but that’s another story..
Great quality video love your enthusiasm!
Didn't find this till today 8/5/19 but thoroughly enjoyed your vid. Wouldn't mind making that trip myself & I'm on the east coast. Thx!
Enjoyed the journey, thanks for sharing.

Very peaceful! Thanks!
Thanks Russ for the HWY 50 tour. Adding to my bucket list. Love the old mining towns, be safe out there.
+mcanning51 thank you !!!
* I took hwy 50 back in 2001 as a truck driver..took it in a snowstorm once i hit higher elevation. Big rigs are not really recommended in the winter.👀But..this was a late september surprise lol. Anyway enjoyed the ride. great video my friend & thanks for sharing. Happy trails!*
