    I started doing ATG because of you. My max dropped quite a bit until I got acclimated, but it felt so much better on my knees after. The tendons and ligaments in the knees are stretched, but the full extent of the tension is relieved when at the bottom. It also engages my quads more. Which has been a prior weak muscle group of mine.

      @@anthonyvanadia5489 I would start with basic wrist mobility excercise on the floor, I found them pretty helpful.
      Also there are certain progressions with the front rack position which you can start with. It would be really hard to start with your whole wrist under the bar so you can start off with just a two fingers or so. Eventually you will be putting all five fingers and then as you get used to it, you will be covering more and more with your wrist. It's just a matter of time and practice imo.
      Also griping the bar wider thus your elbows are more to the side helps a lot as well I think. And working on shoulder mobility with a stick or a band by doing shoulder dislocations will help you get into a better, more stable and upright position which is less taxing on your wrists. But take all of this with a grain of salt, I am not an elite lifter or coach. Good luck

      That is not to bad. I read that front squat should be around 75 or 80% of back squat. What would you do for a five by five on those lifts? I read and know from my own experience that 5x5 usually is with a weight of about 75% of 1rm.
      My strength is (or was) very comparable to yours. At the moment i am 10 months out from a lower back injury caused by back squatting. Probably from butwing caused by stif hips. Just before my lower back injury i could back squat 130kg for 7 sets of 5 reps with good form. But with 135kg i starded to get a good morning pattern. Most i ever back squated is 160kg but was probably able to squat 170kg. About 2 months after my lower back injury i started front squating. I'm loving it now. Only am doing high volume with light weight at the moment though. 2 to 4 months in i was able to do 3x10 with 70kg with front squats. I also did 10x10 with 60kg at that time. Than i stopped because i still had some lower back pain. Back at it for a while now and today i did 155 reps with 50kg (15×10). I also have good cardio so did not find it to hard. In the past i always back squated with a belt. For front squats i don't use one.
      I also have a video from a few weeks before my lower back injury. There i back squated 130kg for 5x5 with 8 reps on the last set. If your interested you can find it on my instagram under the name of yannick_mager.

You mentioned noticing a good morning pattern during squats which resonated with me a lot and if you managed that 130 5x5 with that same good morning squat pattern that's truly impressive.

    100% Front squat > Back squat. IMO its more aesthetic than back squat and I think as a whole front squats can turn you into an absolute unit. Also I think it pairs well if you're training deadlifts a lot and want to have a squat variation that compliments it well.

    I find guys with long femurs squatting a lot of weight to be more impressive. Short femurs allow you to get really deep but often the total range of motion in terms of inches moved will be longer if you are taller with long femurs. Long femurs also put you in a really awkward position.

    The hardest part of the front squat for me isn't bar placement on the collar bone. It's the bending of the friggin wrists. If I do it at the start of a workout, the wrists are wrecked for the bench press and everything else.

    I wish they swapped the back squat for the front squat in powerlifting competitions. Imo, the front squat complements the deadlift better (deadlift: lower back and hamstrings, front squats: upper back and quads). Back squat feels more like a combination of the two. Another reason why I like front squats is that there is no vagueness in bar placement: just put it in front of the neck. You can't slide it down and create low-bar nonsense.

    • @karl4834
      @karl4834 Рік тому +1

      I agree. Of course I can low-bar squat more than I can high-bar, but my high bar and front squat are quite close. As a 56 year old just getting into Olympic lifts this last two years, fatigue is becoming an issue that I've never previously had so much trouble with, so 100% I see your front squat/deadlift combo as ideal...saving back squats for when I back off the other stuff and just do them as an active rest.

Or maybe do bench press only larsen style with fatgrips for more range of motion. Or maybe do heavy hard core work over sets of bodyweight crunches? We don't really want to do the difficult in my opinion, because we are creatures of habit. We want to do the familiar. Ofcourse we can plan for a change in difficulty, but at what cost ?

For me, I have a long torso _and_ long femurs so the "window" of balance i have for high bar is very narrow; I have to hit just the right amount of torso lean, whereas with front squats I have the counterweight in front compensating for my rear end poking back to the end of the room

I recall hitting 265lbs for a set of 8 and had a gentleman next to me repping 315 back squat and wondered how much I could back squat. I said I wasn’t sure, maybe 355 and he told me no, probably mid 400s, which was absolutely absurd. I feel like the front squat is so foreign still to US, AUS, UK etc that it seems so much harder than it actually is. Is it easy? No. But is it twice as hard as back squat? No way. When people ask “what is your secret to front squatting?” I just say “be a man”. Bit old school and a little insensitive but I feel like the message gets across. Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
