I've had my boy piggies for about 2 months now. They started out as a bonded pair sharing their living space, but are now separated by a C&C partition due to fighting (with blood drawn, more than once). But this morning, after I cleaned their home, freshened everything up, topped off their hay and gave them a treat, I bent down to talk to them quietly with my face near their pen wall. One of them stood up to me and nudged my nose with his... then the other one did the same thing. They may have thought I had more treats for them or had some other practical reason for nudging noses with me, but it melted my heart. 💕 The younger one has started popcorning at times and he did that a few times also this morning. It makes me so happy to see them happy... and learning to trust me. I credit Sarah's suggestions for taming with helping me to tame them... I have watched a number of her videos and they are so very helpful! Thank you Sarah... Keep them coming. 🙂

My guinea pigs have become so much more comfortable around me (ive had them for almost a year), however i have come to terms that one of my piggies absolutely hates being touched even after me being very patient and trying everything i could however my other piggie absolutely loves being stroked and held 😂😂 they are so different from each other❤

Have you considered that by not picking her up and forcing some interaction upon her you have allowed her to be more scared for these past months/years? Rather than just a more scary few days and then a much more confident experience after

@@user-zs8yu4bc9t I do pick her up and handle her. It's more about her letting me pet her in the cage. I've been doing Saskia's method of gentle taming for months and take her out quite often. I rescued her from a horrible hoarding situation and she is just a wild thing. She's still very skittish around others but finally warming up to me.

This morning I put a soft hidey my piggies havent had in awhile, so my little one Nugget was checking it out and so focused on chewing on it. I gently 'grabbed' him with one hand and it startled him and he kicked and made a little squeal but when he realized it was just me he didnt even move away lol! Ive been putting my hands in the cage a lot, even for no reason just fluffing up hay or adjusting mats. Ill even do some sweeping and get them used to my hands reaching into the cage. The more they see your hands and realize nothing bad happens, the better! Ive only had my piggies for 6 months and theyre already getting used to me and when I walk into the room they don't tend to run to the other side of the cage as often.

I love your piggies they are so cute! so much personality. I also love the little guinea pig captions. always makes me smile. I have Himalayans, Peruvians, alpaca, two coronets, two texals, and various buff color varieties. I'm still learning about the different breeds. My alpaca "Frodo Baggins" and my coronet girl "Pearl Harbor" are my two favorites. Thank you for sharing this advice with us! My Himalayans have arrived from interstate and had a long journey to get to me, so are still settling in and getting to know cage mates etc. and getting use to the grain mix I give them. It's so much for the poor little dears to get use to.

I recently got a pair of bonded sows to bond with my boar (he and his brother had to be separated) and they were so terrified they didn't move in 24 hours and went into stasis. I gave them the night with as little noise as possible as the environment was very different to before but in this case it was good i did try to handle them to check on them. One had completely been soaked in her own pee from being too afraid to move then obviously ill from not eating ;; They had a week of meds and critical care they are both so lively now they've had a couple of weeks getting used to me, my flat, and also the boar I bonded with them. I'd recommend getting pet cameras to anyone new to it too as you'll get to pick up on behaviours to keep an eye on them as well.

I had mine for 6 months now (one of them 2 months) and its slowly getting better, I am a bit scared to handle them proper as they are really skittish about that and ah I feel bad. But I can pet some of them a little while feeding and I handfeed them and most of them come running for treats. Its a lot better than it used to be and that I am proud of. I been keeping up w their haircuts and nailcuts too despite it being scarry. And had to give some of them a bath too, which actually wasnt too bad. I hope we can work up to handling soon. Some of them are definitely more ready than others. One only just started coming out for food sometimes, shes super skittish. Then our newest one, a neutered boar has almost immediately been super confident. I do love them a lot even though they only like me when I feed them 😂

I got a 2nd piggy after watching yours ❤. The 1st is about 6 weeks (Lulu), and 2nd is about 1yr (Daisy). Of course D is dominant, but when is it too dominant? While she doesn't chase she constantly tries to nip Lulu if Lulu is anywhere close to food/hay/hidey that Daisy wants to be near. Should I separate? They have been in midwest enclosure for about 2 weeks now. Lulu mostly stays along sides of enclosure. I strew the hay and treats, so Daisy can't claim all at same time. Or is this normal? And if Lulu is in one hide and D walks near, she runs to other hide. 😢

I miss them so very much, and I want to try again with guinea pigs. But they are very expensive and I think I ruined my chances of getting guinea pigs again. Looking for some help. Got a pair of pigs about 3 months ago but one of them just hides in his bed all the time unless he wants food. He seems entirely healthy but is constantly anxious. He will hand feed but just goes back to hiding. Try to hold him and give him treats daily but just doesnt seem to improve. The other pig is the opposite, very scatty and just wont sit still. Just sprints everywhere.
Is there any advice on how to get them to calm down a little or is it just because they are adolescent?

Hello! I am a Guinea pig owner to 2 girls named biscuit and butter! I’ve had them since March of this year, and I had the same issue with Butter. She would always hide and run away unless there was food. It took probably a month, but I was just patient with her, and every time I try to pet her, I let her smell me and sniff around my hand first and slowly go into pet her and speak in a soft voice. This helped a lot. being gentle is the best way, but on the other hand, piggies have different personalities, and some are timid and some are outgoing. Just keep being patient and working with your pig. - Leah 😊

I love having a herd but also with two piggies they are easier to manage in terms of sharing out attention and organising things like lap time and floor time. But with three you have another character and dynamic added to the group. Things to consider are your future plans when it comes to carrying on owning piggies; the risk of them not getting along and what you would do; whether you need to upgrade cage size etc; and how easy it is for others to look after them when you're away.
