@A Chick NA Thank you for sharing that you rescued your horses. That is awesome. I want to let you know that when you are speaking of the European country, the correct word is "Belgium." When you are speaking of the breed of horse, it's "Belgian." Or the man was of "Belgian" descent.
So cruel to slaughter a horse. For non Americans out there, the "story of the west" was written on a saddle, and horses are huge in American culture. Just about anyone you meet here will agree that killing a horse is cruel and evil.
It is sad but true. Horses in the US that are going to slaughter can only hope to go to Canada where conditions are “better”. In America it’s illegal to slaughter horses for meat, and interesting to know that in Europe it’s illegal to raise horses for meat. I suppose we would be overrun with horses if something was not done. I don’t like it, it is what it is, we can’t keep them all, but I can try to save a few. And THAT makes me happy.
@@laurem5485 Hi Laure, I did not know horses were not allowed to be raised for meat in Europe. It just seems crazy that Europeans and some Asian countries eat horse meat, while no one in USA eats it. It is such nonsense it seems.
Here, slaughter is used as an alternative to digging a grave or sending a body out for processing. Once the owner knows its time for the horse to pass on, some may choose to eat the horse themselves, use for dog food or donate the meat to a zoo. The owner drives the horse to the butcher themselves, watch it go down and come back after a while to pick up the meat. Slaughter isnt cruel when done right, here many ''horse dealers'' buy off older or unrideable horses and will either sell them saying theyre in top shape, or ship them off to Italy where horse meat is a delicacy. Id say legalizing slaughter in the US would probably keep the majority of kill buyers from shipping their horses long distances to Mexico, the meat tastes great, and if you know where its from, even more sustainable than beef or pork. I live in Denmark.
@@DanishButterCookie the horse is a noble creature mentioned frequently in the bible and I think it's barbarian to have an almost family member taken to the butchers to be slaughtered and eaten ,shame on those that do ! thats a nice place you have. And it's a nice looking mane to look at as you ride anI like how you're leaving him free control of his head. You'll get further and faster with him in trust that way im sure. Too many keep tight reins and it sadden me.
Thank you. His mane is amazing now! I tray to create a mutual trust relationship with the horses. I ask them to do things and they do them because they want to, not because I forced them to.
Just came across your channel. Always like to see rescue horses living a good life! You have a beautiful piece of property there! Your barn looks fairly new and I see it’s sheathed with metal. I noticed the stalls don’t have any wood inside on the outside walls. You might want to consider putting something up. Either boards or plywood to protect the walls, and also the horses. If one was to kick the wall or roll into it and dent or tear it, It would kinda suck! I have seen horses get some pretty nasty cuts from kicking metal walls! It’s a minimal expense worth doing considering the costs of property damage or vet bills.
Welcome to the channel! The plan is to continue the 2x6’s around the inside, but the cost of wood went too high at that time. It’s still on the books we just haven’t finished it yet. lol
Great job. I love the bit less. I’m just learning proper horse care in my 60’s. Didn’t know until recently that horses could be ridden in a halter. Let’s hope more people can learn that.
Rubber mats will save you a ton of money in the long run… they help keep your floor level and from the dirt getting full of pee. Makes whatever bedding you use last way longer and stalls easier to clean. We buy shavings from a sawmill nearby. Check and see if there are any in your area - you can buy them by the truck load and some places deliver.
Thanks for the great suggestions, but we always use straw in our stalls and have a natural flooring. The type of straw that we use allows the urine to flow off of it and drain into the ground. But, we have been blessed with horses that are actually quite neat. They’re very very rarely pee in their stall and would much rather go outside to do their business and come back inside to eat. We don’t ever lock them in unless it’s absolutely necessary, and even that it’s only for a few moments.
I don’t think that the comment that I just put up went anywhere. I never meant to chastise you and I know that you love your horses and would never do anything to hurt any of them. I am a new subscriber and will be looking forward to more videos from you with your beautiful Bishop and your other horses. Jane
With a nice open stable like yours peat is the best bedding material. In compacts into a layer that is super easy too muck out. It neuteralize the ammonium in the pee, so it lasts for a long time. It needs to be kept a bit moist, cause if it gets to dry it repells moisture and becomes very dusty. In the winter I combine it with a layer of straw to isolate against the cold ground. Works great.
I wonder how that would work in NC. we get a couple of months where it's super dry. I use peat in my gardens but never thought about using it in the stalls as a pre bedding under straw. GREAT idea!
@@SFD-Horses I've used it for some 15 years. I have a 450 sqfoot barn that the horses can enter if they like. I live pretty much at the Arctic circle, but we have had some very dry summers sometimes and then the dark dust gets everywhere and is a bother if I forget to water the peat bed.

such a chill beast.
I just found your channel. Very nice... I'm subscribed. Always wanted to learn about drafts. I really want a draft/mule cross. Thanks and God bless!
Thank you for subscribing! I will be doing an informational video about the draft type horse soon. I have only seen 1 draft/mule cross in my life. I bet it would be amazing!
What a sweet heart! He will be a lovely horse to own. He's being so so good and so calm for a first time out. Lovely first ride. How are his feet doing?
He is doing great now. I watched a video of him romping around his paddock with his 2 girlfriends!
nice video and always good to see when horses gets a good life instead of going to the Slaugterhouse .oh I miss riding alot been many years since I had my own horse bought her when she was 1 year old spend 2 years with ground work before one day to just sit on her back like it was just another day I miss her so much, and I hope one day I can get a horse again but sadly right now I cant where i live
Thank you very much for the kind words. We do try to help them as much as we can.
What a beautiful boy, I am very new to the iPAD that my brother bought me since I lost my wonderful husband Allen.
I am not a woman that knows how to work electronics. If I make a mistake I beg you to forgive me. I am in my 70’s

You’re doing fine Jane, don’t worry😊
Dear Jane, this made me smile. My grandparents are the same way.
You doing great Jane. You can work electronics as everyone can read what you have written your brilliant for giving the comments a try. I agree the horse really is beautiful.
I know this was a while ago but im now too ill to ride but I loved this and the view from the camera is like riding myself. Thank you so much for such wonderful videos xx
@Shona Smith
You may enjoy watching a woman named Stephanie who has a UA-cam channel. She goes by @Happier on Horses. She is very informative. I have watched several of her videos. She gives demonstrations and has a draft horse named Fame. She is very well-spoken and interesting/fun to watch. She did a Ride-a-long similar to this called something like "Draft horse trail riding" or "Trail riding with my Draft Horse." I hope i gave you enough clues to find her UA-cam. She is truly awesome. She trail rides in scenic California
@@sallykauth2115 oh brilliant thank you!! Yes I found her and will be watching some back. Oh this makes me so happy, thank you again :)

I'm so glad you found her. I now realize she has at least two trail-riding videos. One is much longer/more interesting than the other. Although, I always enjoy her videos. She is so fun and enthusiastic. I just wanted to let you know to look for more than one of her videos. I hope you are feeling your best today 🙏
Big beautiful fella. He reminds me of the Breton draft horses that were in the field next next to our bnb when we were in Brittany. Big and friendly.
lovely to see. What a good job you are doing.
That was a nice walk! Thank you ❤️
Thank you sharing this video is incredibly calming.
God bless you for helping these animals. Im afraid of horses myself, so i do hospice work with humans. But i love people who can do animal rescue work.
Baddest 4x4 in the county!
lol yes is IS
You have a beautiful place to go riding!! And he's well adjustable to the road scenery. I love your farm it's so beautiful and gorgeous . Your so darn lucky, it must be a lot of work. If I ever win the lottery my $$ going straight to a beautiful place one day.!!!! I'm envious of your farm. I'll get there some day. Thank you for your video.!!!🍁🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦💞🇨🇦💕
Such wonderful comments. Thank you very much.
Need a portrait of you and Bishop. He’s really easy going.👍🏽👍🏽camera position is good. Nice country for a ride. He talks to you a lot.😃
thats a nice place you have.
Fun...horse was great! Thanks for taking us out on the ride with you...trails are nice & open.
I can feel what he is like by watching.
Honey, he’s looking for his friends. There they are. Now I’m home Thank goodness. Jane
I enjoy your videos. And your beautiful horses
Hes a sweat heart im so glade you saved him God bless you such great looking anamal
Great Vid! Love the POV! Thanks Good job, to both of you!
BISHOP IS LOVELY.
Sometimes a halter is called a side-pull bridle when reins are attached.
I like the way you tie the halter to be an improvised hackamore. I bet that that they are not easy to tie.
Its really not that hard once you get used to it.
Wish I hade your life such a beautiful location all those horses, I must have done wrong in my past life
We have a Belgian Draft Cross PMU foal named Clyde. He's all grown up now and 18 years old❤
Awesome! Glad you saved him!
@@SFD-Horses Me too. He's such a sweetheart. VERY STRONG 😂
I hope I have the same luck with my rescued Belgian Hercules.
Belgians are sweet natured, i'm sure with patience you'll do fine with him! Congrats!
This video was actually so relaxing, your talking is so nice to listen to, and I love just the view of riding a horse. Better than any regular blog❤️
Here’s a quick trick: clip the reins to the bottom of the halter and use the pressure from below.
Nice trick. Thank you.
