I was in a hole in the ground in Kansas. Actually, it was a Titan II missile silo. My second year in the USAF, maintaining the communication equipment. It was a time I supplemented my airman’s income by delivering pizzas in the evenings and working in an amusement park on weekends.

oh man. I am ex USAF, joined in 82. was stationed at Vandenberg AFB in one of the test groups. I wen down the Minuteman and Titan silo complexes they had their both for actual launches and for crew training. Funny thing is I am heading to Utah now, in the waning time of my engineering career to work on the upgrades to the ICBM system, ground based strategic deterrent

Fun look back! This was a great compilation and variety of media from then. A big kick to see all this through decades older eyes! I think we were the first generation that ever had their childhood years captured so thoroughly, by television media.

I was 15 and remember it all. I was just getting into my hippie days and I hated the Monkees. The radio was filled with Top Forty music and a new thing was coming on the air called FM. It didn't hiss and crackle like AM did when a storm passed over. And the beginning of Time Tunnel and Star Trek were 2 of my favs. The movie selection for that year wasn't very memorable, except for the classic, "Who's Afraid of Virgina Wolfe."

I saw the Blue Max with George Peppard, Ursula Andress, and James Mason that year. I was 10 years old. The second feature was Dimension 5. Starring Jeffrey Hunter. Terrible movie. It is on UA-cam.

FIrst thing I recognize in these clips is Roger Mudd's voice. I must have spent too much time watching the news in the 60s. I do miss the days of good TV news with Walter Cronkite, Roger Mudd, Harry Reasoner, and Hugh Downs who spent much time in radio work and it shows in their delivery. Now it's all flashy folks and quick cuts so I just wait and read things online as I did with my lamented daily newspaper (now a tabloid format which I loathe). I also remember when we got our first COLOR tv in 1968! I'm also singing along with all the ads--thanks for the memories.

1966 was the year I got the best birthday gift ever. When I got home from school my mother gave me for my 7th birthday a Batman utility belt by Ideal. Today it is considered the Holy Grail of Batman collectibles. In the package it'll cost you 3,500 - 4,500 bucks!

    • @boobzac

Unfortunately it's long gone. I'd imagine it cost under $10 back then. But at $10 your looking at 350 - 450 times what it went for. Today collectors usually purchase it piece by piece. It came with a Bat boomerang, Bat-cuffs, a Bat-light etc. All of these gadgets tended to get lost so trying to put one together is tough. About 10 years ago I saw the bat-cuffs with a rusty chain, looking the worse for wear sell for just over $200! And it's my pleasure tuning in. Just keep 'em coming!

Around 1965-66, I believed that time was the best time for Herb Alpert and the Tiajuana Brass. I heard their music quite ALOT during that time. "Occasional Wife"? Didn't they already have a program like that with "The Cara Williams Show"? Its about two married couples who live together, all four work together at the same place, but they must pretend they are not married or their boss will fire them. Only their next-door neighbor knows about them.

It's About Time! That theme song has been stuck in my head for decades, and I couldn't figure out which program it was from: not Lost in Space, not Valley of the Dinosaurs, so WHAT???! Whew! I can relax now.
In 1966, I was 6 and 7, watching most of these programs with my little brother. I don't think I went to the movies, but I remember the ad for Virginia Wolf, which frightened me. I'm not sure why. I loved the TV ad for Little Friskies, partly for the cats and mostly b/c the speaker stuck his arm outside of the TV. I often visited my married older sister, who played the radio and danced. Music and dancing were something we always shared.
EDIT: Most episodes of _It's About Time_ are available here on YT.

On the lighter side, that summer offered the TV escapism of 'Where the Action Is' with Dick Clark every afternoon, and of course, 'Dark Shadows'...and I couldn't miss 'The Monkees' and 'Batman'! I still have the TV Guide and Life magazines with Batman on the cover! Although muscle cars were all awesome, the '66 Olds Toronado was a pretty rad design for older folks!

I have 5 older siblings, so there was a lot of popular music played. I also clearly remember that commercial for Lustre-Cream!

The video brings up some of the dark events that happened in 1966, but as a 12-year-old living the life of Riley on a small island in the Pacific, things were looking much differently. It was long before I started having to worry about the draft and going to college and finding a job. Now, I'm a 70-year-old man who has done all that and has somehow managed to survive though about two layoffs, but what kept me going were those magical days I spent in 1966, obsessing about Batman, Peanuts, comic books, and slot cars.

The theme song for "The Green Hornet" TV show sounded almost like Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight Of The Bumblebee," which was the theme song for the radio version of "The Green Hornet." That program was created by Francis "Fran" Striker and produced by George W. Trendle, both of whom also respectively created and produced two other classic radio adventure series, "The Lone Ranger," and "Sergeant Preston Of The Yukon." Like "The Green Hornet," those shows also used classical pieces as their opening themes: the music for "The Lone Ranger" was Rossini's "The 'William Tell' Overture," while the "Sergeant Preston" song was Georges Bizet's "Donna Diana Overture."

My mother had her first teaching job at some high school. We had a major hurricane (name of it??) where we had to evacuate for a time. I remember a Francie barbie doll, the Batman, That Girl, Family Affair, and Monkeys tv shows are all very familiar. Love the Doritos one, though I don't remember, it is so cute. I was in 8th grade, track, first year as a cheer leader, am still in touch with some of those school friends I had. Loved tanning in the summer. ,i was also secretary in Girls Atheletic Association. I was bride's maid of honor in my sister's wedding, and got to wear her wedding dress in my wedding in 1980. ,i did go to see that Russians Are Coming movie.
One memorable incident. In Social Studies, our class learned all about holding strikes, and decided we would hold one, as we felt we were gettint too much homework from our home room teacher. We arranged a meeting with him after lunch, and presented our case. He apologized and we all quickly came to terms. Then! The principal found out about whate we had done and blew a gasket, said we would be "hellers" by the time we were seniors. So we decided we would be the best class the school ever had, and through the rest of our school years, stuck together.
