Correction: Wilmington, North Carolina does not have any mountains, but other parts of NC do (like Asheville). Film producers around this time were attracted to North Carolina as a whole due to its varied landscape overall, which was ideal for production (beaches near Wilmington, mountains near Asheville, etc).
I noticed that, when the map of North Carolina was shown. The Los Angeles/Hollywood area has mountains and the coast within a relatively short distance. Wilmington, NC doesn't.
I love DEG for the risks they took when it came to releases. Dune, Blue Velvet, Evil Dead, Transformers. All mainly underground hits, so I respect them for that.
Seeing how these companies rose and fell is always interesting and definitely worth noting for anyone wanting to have their own business. Even if it’s not in the film world, some of these lessons are worth learning from regardless. Keep up the great work man, your channel is great!
Dino De Laurentis-produced movies were a HUGE staple in my childhood. The Conan movies, Death Wish, Flash Gordon, Dune, even the animated Transformers movie. Those TV deals he made for those movies made them a big part of my Saturday afternoons. It’s funny, the first time I had seen his daughter’s name, Raffaella De Laurentis, was for the Jackie Chan & Jet Li movie, The Forbidden Kingdom. It was so refreshing to see that the De Laurentis name was still being associated with fun movies.
Fun fact, Army of Darkness was originally going to be the second Evil Dead movie. Sam Raimi came up with the concept after Irvin Shapiro (who’d been The Evil Dead’s publicist) told him to capitalize on the first movie’s success with a sequel, but after Universal and Fox passed it was shelved in favor of 1985’s Crimewave. At Stephen King’s recommendation Dino approached Raimi about adapting King’s novel Thinner, and though Raimi wasn’t interested Dino agreed to produce an Evil Dead sequel. He still balked at the script (then titled either “Evil Dead II: The Army of Darkness” or “Evil Dead and the Army of Darkness”) and told Raimi he wanted “something more like the first one” due to DEG’s financial issues, So Raimi and Scott Spiegel penned a new script and that was that. Well, almost. Raimi and Spiegel planned for the movie to open with a recap of The Evil Dead, but New Line (distributors of the first movie) refused to free up any footage since they weren’t involved with the sequel. Raimi and Spiegel figured they’d just reshoot what they needed with new actors but DEG wouldn’t approve the higher budget or extend the shooting schedule (due in part to Raimi going over both with his previous film Crimewave), so they decided to turn the first 10 minutes of Evil Dead II into a streamlined remake of the first movie. To this day, if you ask Raimi or Bruce Campbell they’ll tell you Evil Dead II doesn’t really start until the scene where Ash first gets possessed.
They most def fumbled the bag on that 1. I (a Wilmington, NC native) remembered it happening like it was yesterday as the local news never wasted an opportunity to speak on it lol

I love stories like this, & was familiar with DEG, as they released many films, that although were flops, at the time, are gaining audiences, in more recent times, myself included. There's some true gems here that I've never heard of, that I'm now interested in checking out. Especially the million dollar mystery film & King Kong Lives. All in all, I'm glad that Dino was able to go out a success, instead of a failure. This video also taught me, that the now corporate minded, "maximizing profits" business model, that now dominates the film industry, started in the 1980s.
Great, well-done video. Dino lived one hell of a life. It's too bad he stretched himself too thin financially. If he didn't try building a studio in Australia, producing too many films in one year, not produced so many flops, hired a CEO that could handle the business end of the studio system. DEG could have outlasted Cannon, Calaco, & Orion pictures, Dino could have bought them out. DEG could have been the biggest Independent film studio.
His first three American films are incredible. I absolutely love 3 Days of the Condor, and Deathwish and Serpico are cinematic classics. What a debut. The Dead Zone, Firestarter, Conan, Dune, Blue Velvet, Silver Bullet, and Maximum Overdrive are all films I cherish too.🎥🤌🏼❤️ Thanks Dino. RIP DEG🔥

Fascinating and well told. In 1980 my friends and I got into one of the roadshow test-screenings for Flash Gordon - in Orange Connecticut. So I went up to the lobby - and there was DeLaurentis with a string of assistants in suits, and also the rock group Queen (without Freddy Mercury).

Whoa whoa whoa . . . Did you say Wilmington had mountains?! I’m a N.C. Native and Wilmington is a beach city. The mounts are about 7 hours in the opposite direction. Maybe you meant to say North Carolina as a whole had varying terrain, because Wilmington literally sits at sea level 😂😂 The studio lots are still there too, operating as Screen Gems.

A year later the man was in handcuffs and Cannon Films was under federal investigation.
DeLaurentiis never partnered up with people like that.
@@phillophotographer7366 lol I never said that he was nor was I accusing him, merely curious about the possibility since it was fairly rampant back then in Hollywood. From what you've said here though it seems like he was flying straight
I really like Three Days of the Condor. It's interesting that parts of the movie take place in the Twin Towers.
as was part of the deal (CIA/Mafia predictive programming ), same with Halloween III (has 911 all over , on clocks ,e tc etc) and King Kong ( the ape falls EXACTLY to ground zero) . Days Condor also has Cliff Robertson on floor 93 , born on 9/9, died 9/10 , and flew with his private jet , returning from his bday party, over the WTC , exactly the moment Tower 2 blew up on 9/11 ( u can see his jet even in some news footage)...go figure
It's funny I'm only aware of the logo for being at the beginning of Transformers The Movie that for awhile there as a kid I thought every movie with that logo would be just as good.
Carlo Ponti achieved the same if not more international success than Dino. He was Sophia Lauren’s husband and a legendary producer before Dino.
There are no mountains in Wilmington,Nc.
You are correct... what I meant to say is that North Carolina as a whole was appealing to film producers due to its varied landscape (beaches near Wilmington, mountains near Asheville, etc)
At least King Kong Lives did well in Japan and got a Famicom game
I'm watching the Snick video and I was wondering if you or anyone reading this comment. if they know of a show that's kind of like Jackass but in the suburbs with a group of mid to late teen friends, all guys and made in the early 2000s. I'll say around 2000 to 2004. It features mostly family friendly pranks and sketches.
I'm from Canada and it played on our family channel which is the Disney Channel for people in the states. Been wondering what the name was for years and hope anyone here can help!
Hm there is something familiar about that. I'll see what I can find but that may be nothing lol.
@kamenanew9867 yo for real that would be such a huge help! It's been bugging me for probably 15+ years lol
@@SmithSens16 not a lotta luck so far but I'll keep lookin
DEG made some awesome cult classics!
Do any of you remember fullmoon entertainment? What ever happened to them?
DEG released some fine movies but just never could get those big hits that prop up the smaller films.
Dune really didn’t get the attention and respect it deserved- then again, the story has tons of details and if you never read the book , the movie wasn’t a great preparatory for what was playing out .
Stuntman Dar Robinson gave up his life for "Million Dollar Mystery".
Please do embassy pictures next
Embassy Pictures is now folded into Studio Canal, began on Tuesday June 25, 1985.
@markelijio6012 but I want to know it's whole story
thank you Dino for Dune
Arnold Schwarzenegger did a movie for this company but sadly it stunk he made better movies after that which were Predator and Running Man.
He did two Conan movies and raw deal all with DEG involvement.Conan is considered a good movie
Year of the Dragon & Breakdown , Hannibal were Dino 's best films
