oh my god! is that who Toy Box was?! i remember hearing Best Friend and Sailor Man all the time when i found UA-cam back in 2007-8. i swear you can hear them in alot of AMVs back in the day.
I remember as a kid, I used to be a big fan of Foldhesten Dolph. The hilarious, baseball bat-wielding, racist, fascist, bigoted, politically incorrect hippo… …man, the early 2000s were a different time huh?
As a Swede so do I remember Tomas, Tim and Frida (yes, they added Frida to the title here) and Smurf hits, though I'm still surprised to this day how long-lived it is.
Thank you for this tour of your nation's pop culture, Esh; I had no idea that Danish kid's TV was so horny! And I won't lie, I winced as you drank that milk/orange juice mixture!
Oh Toy Box, that takes me back. Back in high school I bought the album on rhapsody and listened to it all the time. People used to give me a hard time that "it was for little kids," then I would play Super Duper Man for them and instantly changed their minds with the line "can I touch your tingaling?" They were quite explicit if you really listened to the lyrics.
I freaking loved the video. I had never heard of any of these pieces of media, and it was really fun to see. Thanks for the small glimpse into your childhood in Denmark.
We had similar trucks in Poland. They mostly sold packages with ice-cream too. Tho I think they went out of business...we have trucks now. But they're more stationary and sell natural ice cream. Like some more homemade scope ice-cream. They don't sell popsicles.
It's so funny how every country has their fair share of crazy media, Esh, and even in the US, we have our fair share of wacky media, from crazy commercials (like they guy made of ice cream who ate himself) and cringy TV (like the game show Moment of Truth). Also, when you mentioned Toy Box, I just laughed from the funny memories I had when I was little since their lyrics were so childish and goofy as well as how hard they tried to copy Aqua
Spoiler: I was wondering when this channel would mention the Smurfs. Even though I cannot understand the lyrics without subtitles and the voices would get on my nerves, I would still listen to this Smurf music over Kids Bop any day.
It is thanks to you, I discovered BonBon and felled in love with it. I'm British but I have a fondness for international stuff. Perhaps you can do a video talking about the album you briefly mentioned in the video in the future and perhaps as an separate video featuring English translated lyrics to the songs on it?
Now that you mentioned Bennys Bathtub at the end, do you have any conciderations of covering some of the danish animated movies, like War of the Birds (Fuglekrigen)?
@@FictionAddiction I'd love that. I'm a big animation fan, and the language barrier has been what's prevented me from really trying to get into a number of non-English animated movies that didn't at least have fansubs made for them. The only Danish animated movie I've seen is Valhalla, so having a look at others would at least be a great time for me.
I really think that The old Danish products had a special charm to them, From how They were made, To how it shaped The Culture. and believe it or not, Im Danish too, so when I was younger I expireinced alot of The Products You mentioned. and quickly became obesessed with some of them throughout My Childhood, plus there was also The Hugo and Pixeline games. Also I really like you're sense of Humor and Editing, keep up the good work :).
This was so interesting tbh. I like viewing media from other countries and cultures and seeing just how different is is compared to my country’s (USA here.)
lol cartoonz were pretty big in Italy for like, one summer. Between this and PK i'm learning Italy and Danemark had a lot of media in common. I am pretty sure even some of the Aqua knock off came here.
In New Zealand, there's also basically one ice cream brand (Tip Top), and its vanilla is SOOOOOO good. Goes perfect with a cake cone Also, holy shit! That weird park with the horny statues was from a candy?! And is that Cowey mascot based off Jessica Rabbit? God, I know that sailor song, too. This is such a bizarre experience. As to your post-video challenge, when I was young I watched this VHS called "Baby Animals Just Wanna Have Fun" ALL THE TIME. It wasn't THAT weird, but I feel like my repeated viewings were a bit abnormal. An early glimpse into the animal freak I would become. Also, the Honeycomb Monster terrified me.
Are a lot of Danish commercials in English like that milk-orange juice one? Or was that from a British broadcast or something? Also, since it's actually kind of a concern here in America now, there's a bit of backlash against orange juice and other fruit juices being called 'healthy' since it's largely just the sugar from the fruit being consumed without any of the fiber from the flesh of the fruit. You'd probably never eat 6 oranges in a row, but you can easily drink 6 oranges worth of juice without a second thought. Obviously, being American, most of the weird shit we've made has been pretty well covered on the internet, and I don't have too much new to add. I'm a few months younger than you are, so I grew up in the 90's, which means I didn't catch all the weird 80's commercials, but I did catch a number of the 'radical' and 'Xtreme' stuff which is probably some of the weirdest stuff to me. Other than that, breakfast cereal commercials, fast food commercials, and toy commercials are all I really remember.
I mean if a company wants to make their product "hip" and "trendy" then yeah they'll use english, especially American english since America for the longest time has been synonomous with the newest, most hip and trendy culture around.
Oh I know You Box. Like I've listened to some of their songs. The videos were hilarious. It was a bit cheesy but in a good way. Yo we had the same thing with Smurfs too. With Polish hits of the time remade
Really intresting to see the danish had the same obession with smurf as is swedes. We also had an popular actor/singer make an album with them. And used listen smurf hits alot as a kid.
Revisiting this video after Benny's Bathtub just got a really good American blu-ray release by a specialty label and I got to see it for the first time. The transfer is excellent, you can see practically every bristle stroke of the painted characters in each frame and the colors are clear and vibrant. With your comment on how it's a commentary on contemporary culture at the time, I feel I got the gist of what most characters are making fun of, all except the bird-watcher/child molester. I don't really get what he's supposed to represent. I also thought the pirate skeletons got old quick. Considering how short the movie is, I think a bit too much time was spent on them. The disc also has a few HD episodes of Circleen, including I'm told was banned from TV, one about going to America during the 70's civil rights protests. Now I wish I could get a good copy of Denmark's first animated feature, the one that adapts Anderson's The Tinder Box. There's an Italian dubbed version that's easy to find online, but that's it.
@@gordhanxYeah, I'm waiting to get the money to get a good region free UHD player so I can fix that issue with my own setup, but if you have a PC with a blu-ray drive you can use a free software called Make MKV to rip dvds and blu rays of any region to it. Only real solutions that I know.
You have the computer game based on Thomas and Tim as a child. You could play their superhero story and their pirate story. A series of small tasks and mini games with clips from the cartoon in between. Each game ended with a "boss fight" against Frida. You could choose to play as Frida or Thomas. In the pirate story (the one with the big boobs), Thomas wins by repeatedly touching Frida's fantasy breasts, whereas Frida wins by beating Thomas all the time. Who you played as did not change the end of the game as long as you won. As a kid back then, it was really fun.
Toybox for eurovision 2021? Emile De Forest who ? Move over Rasmussen, Leonora, and Ben and Tan. Also Smurfs should go for Finland. gtfo Lordi and Sarah Alto
There was a DIY found footage alien horror film a few years ago called "Encounters", and the film "The Substitute" is about a boy who realies his substitute teacher is an alien. But that's about it as far as I know.
I think you're making too big a stink over the more elements in these shows. I think it gives them a more worldy feel. It realizes that the world isn't as clean a place as we'd like it and they run with it. Honestly, I'm kind of envious of Danish kids right now.

I think the worst media to come out of Sweden is that infernal Crazy Frog. He had two racing games. Yes. TWO.
I'm just impressed that UA-cam still allows this to be up.

"fuzzy m&m testicles" 😂😂😂
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. We really did have some wierd shit back then. 😂
Thank you for this tour of your nation's pop culture, Esh; I had no idea that Danish kid's TV was so horny! And I won't lie, I winced as you drank that milk/orange juice mixture!
Speaking of, I had no idea that commercial parodied an Elvis song.
We had Smurf Hits in Germany, too. We had a Christmas album and a more "general" album, and I listened to those more often than I'd like to admit.
Finland too
Smurf hits was all over Europe

The accent is kinda a dead give away 😂

What I got from this video is Danish advertising exec's love sexualizing farm animals. Yay¿

The smurfs hits were called here “Los pitufos maquineros”
A Smurfs parody of Lordi... I throw up my hands.
I wish they had that in USA. Lordi is amazing!
Now that you mentioned Bennys Bathtub at the end, do you have any conciderations of covering some of the danish animated movies, like War of the Birds (Fuglekrigen)?
If people are into it, I could absolutely do a video about that stuff. It'd likely be a little more educational than jokey, though.

So if I understand correctly, this show walked so Backyardagains could run. Cool. 😊👍

Bring on the weird!
Oh god, I remember the Smurf remixes, they were a major thing in Poland as well.
Certainly interesting
Awesome!
This guy is literally JonTron but blonde.
And not a Nazi-
Really intresting to see the danish had the same obession with smurf as is swedes. We also had an popular actor/singer make an album with them. And used listen smurf hits alot as a kid.
as a fellow nordic brother (norway) i felt everyone of these
oof..
This video is good good.
God I haven’t heard Toy Box in a minute, they were super popular for AMVs

I’ve heard about it. It’s a shame it’s only Region A, I’d love to snag a copy as it sounds incredible!

I'm watching this in 2025, just before the new President takes office.
A Barbie Girl reference and the political joke made are both still relevant...
So not only did they rip off Barbie Girl but also Yankee Doodle??? WTF
8:07 umm I got nothing to say.....
Ms Cowly is Jessica Rabbit if Jessica got turned into a cow-woman by Doctor Moreau.
Yo Smurfs kinda Slap!
I dunno... I think the Reptiicus vid felt more Self Indulgent then this... might just be me tho.
The first ever "porn" vhs i ever bought was one of those Danish sex comedies from the 70s that they would sell in book stores 😂😂😂 I was like 12
That was fun :D :D :D

I do remember that game! Loaned it from the library a lot of times. Always mostly played the superhero story, heh.
wait.... a Danish store doesn't have a bigger flag to sell?
They were just out on the particular day I was shooting and I didn't have time to wait. So I just decided to roll with it and make it a gag.

Hjem-is, just like Hemglass here in Sverige!
Are you danish too?
🫣
Ooooh yeah, Denmark was pretty badass once. Now it seems Sweedens PC culture slowly changes it.
