Do you know that the Sonic 3D Blast's creator, in his infinite wisdom, has released a Director's Cut for the Genesis version? It has bugfixes, level selection screen and all, and you can run it as a ROM on an emulator, a Sega Mini or on original hardware if you have a multicart. I haven't tried it though...
@@KairuHakubi Yeah but by this point it should had been the norm, Sonic 3D Blast was the third Sonic game to be isometric by that point, the first been Arcade SEGA Sonic the Hedgehog (which had Sonic, Mighty, and Ray) and the second being Sonic Labyrinth for the Game Gear. Sonic 3D Blast seem to be a sort of sequel to those (and Flicky) two rather than the mainline 2D ones, it's literally Sonic Labyrinth 2.
Thank you. Funny thing though, When I recorded this, I was using a headset mic from, like, 2015 or something. I just recently got a much better studio quality mic.
I'm honestly a bit of an apologist for this game, I got the Genesis version for Christmas when I was like, 8 or so and I was fascinated with how they managed to make a convincing 3D game experience on my Sega. I mean, even back then I knew it wasn't "Real" 3D (except for the special stages, those were practically witchcraft to me, oh and the intro cutscene) I guess even as a kid I was a huge tech nerd because of all the impressive things this game did on the 16bit machine even if the game itself was kinda bland-ish, I can't say it's "Bad" because I've played BAD games in my time, Sonic 3D doesn't even come close! All the tech-y stuff plus the amazing soundtrack kept me playing for years and made me get good at the game which heightens the enjoyment pretty significantly. I actually think the bonus rounds are just... kinda easy compared to the others. I think this was the first Sonic game where the Bonus rounds barely challenged me at all as a kid, still the amazing tech plus the soundtrack made me enjoy them reguardless
In relation to Jon Burton's UA-cam channels, I would highly recommend anyone wanting to play 3D Blast, play Jon Burton's ROM hack, Sonic 3D Blast Director's Cut. Jon Burton, the original director of the game, decided to refine Sonic's controls, add a non-Flicky mode, level select menu, password save system, and Super Sonic to the game! He even restored a few beta enemies that got cut from the final game.
Thank you!!! Finally someone said it! I haven't even watched this vid yet! Btw you can even predict your trajectory, based on 90 degree angles. Use also the tiles to know if your lined up or not before spin dashing to an enemy. So many tricks ppl dont know
Always liked this game, I'm very nostalgic for this era, in general. I still remember Sonic Spinball on the Genesis kiosk that was set up in Sears at the mall, Christmas season..you sound ike a younger guy, it's cool that you have good taste and appreciate the older stuff
Reviewing titles with names as big as Sonic, it's tough to be objective, but I think you did a good job with it. Personally, I think a good way to test this is to ask yourself, "If this was made by a different company and starred a different character, but the gameplay was the same, how would we be thinking about it now?" With a game like Sonic 3, if it had miraculously been Bubsy 2 instead, I think it would still be described as one of the greatest games of its generation. With Sonic 3D Blast, I think it would be fondly featured in a lot of "hidden gems" lists. The 3D isometric thing genuinely looks cool, especially for a 16-bit game, and the production values and control tightness are good enough to call it an upper-tier game of this sort. I just don't think it's on quite the same tier as the mainline series. Doesn't mean it isn't fun.
I think you're right. While the Sonic branding initially (massively) helped its sales, in the years following it instead gives it a harsher judgment than it probably deserves. I still think the gameplay is a bit underwhelming, but it is well polished and technically _very_ impressive.
I was recommended this video on my home page btw. Just thought you’d like to know. Keep it up! I honestly love this game. It was one of my favorite, and I never got the hate for it. It could have been better in some areas, but I definitely wouldn’t call it a bad game. Also yes, the special stages are so fun, despite looking simplistic. They’re not frustrating, giving you enough time to react to the early 3D
And using the 3D controller for the Saturn makes this game easier to control. And I love the music in this game. Richard Jacques who made it, also made the soundtrack for Metropolis Street Racer among others. Now I feel like playing it again 😅
I do own the Saturn Version, My Biggest Issue with it is the Lack of a Save Feature. The Load times can be a be a bit on the long side as well. Also, This was know as Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island in Europe and Japan.
@brentendo6424 I own a lot of Saturn games and Sonic 3D is one of the worst when it comes to Load times. I've heard the load times are better if you use a flash cartridge.
If you play on an emulator, you can always play the Japanese version. Loading times are shorter, they even removed the 'picture' of the clouds with the word 'Loading'.
That's the one thing I hate about this game. The loading screens seem to have no effort put into them whatsoever. the loading screen is kinda ugly, and it doesn come on screen for about 10 seconds after loading has started.
Look at it this way, they are significantly easier than any other classic sonic special stage so they are MUCH easier to appreciate. I used to like them a lot too when I was a kid but once the special stages in the other games clicked for me, this quickly fell down in my list of preferred special stages lol. Also, it can be argued that most sonic special stages aren't that good anyways so for something you have to do to get the best ending, this being the easiest makes it the most painless special stage which can be easily confused for it being good when really you just have to tolerate it less relatively speaking
I honestly love both games I mean sure it’s not the best classic game but it’s fun! I love booting them up on the genesis and Saturn because it’s such a charming game! The music(both games), level themes and everything else is just amazing
I haven't played the game myself yet but I always love what I see whenever gameplay shows up in a sonic video. I'm a sucker for the not exactly 3d isometric platformers, my first one being banjo kazooie grunty's revenge
I wanted to love it. I beat Sonic Spin Ball, and was a huge Sonic fan as a '90s kid. This Sonic could never build up any speed, and was trying to pass off isometric pseudo 3D graphics as true 3D to a bunch of dumb kids. This game was what distanced me from Sonic.
A lot of the soundtrack got reused in Sonic Adventure.y memory is a little foggy, but: Panic Puppet = Shadow 05 title theme Special Stage = windy valley Boss theme = heard in emerald coast Panic Puppet = Twinkle Park I've never played a 3D sonic game, but I think that's it. Bonus: Endless mine from S3+K = City Escape
Definitely an underrated entry in the series.. It isn't amazing and has some issues (Flickies, depth perception, super easy special stages) but imo not nearly as bad as some make it out to be. Always fun for me to revisit every few years on Sonic Mega Collection, and I love both soundtracks.
I love 3D Blast! I only ever played the Genesis version as a kid. I think it's a really good game and the music is awesome! Some really nice tracks here. Yes, it's totally different from the previous Sonic games, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I think some go way overboard with the hate. People should give it a shot if they haven't, just go into it knowing it's not like the previous entries. Just have fun, you might actually like it (:
What if in an alternate timeline, Sonic 3D Blast was a Saturn-exclusive title? But instead of isometric, it's a full 3D platformer. With multiple playable characters and Super Forms. And all levels besides Puppet Panic Act 2 just focused on going straight for the goal?
Sonic 3d blast on the saturn was my first sonic game. I struggled to beat it, must have taken me 200 hours to get to the boss and im pretty sure i couldn't finish it. I think the game is rightfully disliked for not being a sonic game. I was so young but others had been waiting for a follow up to sonic 3 and knuckles and this is what they got. Marketted as full 3d when mario 64 was out. I always thought the sega saturn came out years before the n64 when I was growing up because of the gap in quality, not a year and a half ( a year if sega didn't pull that stunt). Overall, every game travelers tales makes is with their best effort, you can tell they didn't get the highest budgets and time to work but they just wanted people to have fun I'll still get enjoyment out of crash the wrath of cortex and lego star wars the complete saga is in my top 5 coop games of all time
I don't dislike the special stages of the genesis version either, but i'm surprised someone actually loves them to the point of commenting "the best one in the series". I love Sonic 3D Blast man, it's criminally overlooked.
I have not played Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn) in years. I'd have to play it again to see how it has aged but from my youth it was not a bad game at all in my opinion. I actually quite enjoyed it and for one the OST for the Saturn version was a major reason for that as well. Rusty Ruin is goated. Also Metropolis Street Racing for the Dreamcast has some similar tunes to Sonic R and Sonic 3D Blast because the composer Richard Jacques worked on all 3.
I got close to beating Sonic 1 & 2 but Sonic 3D Blast was the only Sonic game I was able to beat, I know, sad. This game could have easily been called Flicky 3D?
I love Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island of the SEGA Saturn - it was the first Sonic game I ever owned, having skipped the megadrive/genesis in favour of the Super Nintendo back in the day. Personally my main problem with the game is that it's way too easy, as there's so many chances to stack-up lives and you can easily collect all the chaos emeralds well before the final zone. It's still surprising to me how poorly regarded this game is in sonic fandom. PS. I especialy enjoy the music diamond dust stages, act 2 in particular. They wouldn't have sounded out of place in Christmas Nights.
I love this game. Thanks for the video. The 2017 release of Sonic 3D Blast Director's Cut by the original creator is the way to go with its improved gameplay and added features. Sadly, the game has now been delisted on Steam but the Director's Cut was available in Steam in the Sega Genesis Classics collection. The creator shows how to add it to your Steam Library here if you about the game before it being delisted. ua-cam.com/video/5nBeppQgFGw/v-deo.html The patch also works on the Analogue Pocket, and you can get a repro cart of the game which I also did.
The special stages in the Genesis/Mega Drive version are fun and easily do-able by most people. However, the Saturn's return to use half pipes sucked; they're very hit and miss, as well as a lot harder to complete. Also, in the Saturn version you have a lot less chances to try for the emeralds which exasperates those issues even more. While I do love the look and sound of the Saturn version, it's a real pain in the loading time aspect. Yeah I still own both versions of the game; And it's always the Genesis/Mega Drive version I go to back to. Play it with the 3 or 6 button official arcade pad from Sega, because the controls play and feel out as they should with it.
Let's be fair, is it fair to base a game's quality on the existence of ROM hacks? If anything the fact there are ROM hacks that fix the game but still function on original hardware is an indictment of the product, not praise for it.
So, I think there is a difference between fun ROM hacks and fix ROM hacks. Fun ROM hacks change the game in a way that improves the overall experience at the expense of the authenticity of the game. Meanwhile, fix ROM hacks are hacks or mods that make the game closer to the original release of the game. I think I explained this to someone else, but the port of Sonic Adventure on PC is basically broken. That's why I will use mods to fix the missing textures, and bad lighting system and effects. However, I won't use fun hacks for any of these reviews, because then I won't be getting an authentic experience. Hacks like Sonic 3D Blast DX are fun to play with, and they improve the original game. However, it changes the base experience enough that I won't use those mods in reviews.

I know there is a director's cut, I didn't know you can play it on original hardware. That's pretty neat.
@@brentendo6424Most modern ROM hacks are playable on real hardware which is really cool but obviously depends :)
Huh, I didn't know that. I guess that makes sense though.
he's a brilliant programmer. it's not a game that ever could have been _good_ because.. isometric running and jumping? no way.

Well, I'm sure somebody on the planet loves the Sonic 1 special stages too. Lol.
Functionally they're the same as Sonic 2's but with lower ring requirements and a longer field of view to see the bombs coming
