The singer/bassist is the late John Wetton who played with King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash and others. The other guys, Geoff Downes (keyboards) and Steve Howe (guitarist) came from Yes and drummer, Carl Palmer came from Emerson, Lake and Palmer. They were basically a supergroup.
Wetton was also in a short lived prog band called UK with Terry Bozzio. Saw them open for Tull, & they put out a few albums. Danger Money is a great album by UK. He joined Asia after UK.
@@josephgallagher945 Yeah, and a couple of others. I just listed the primary three. I have the FM stuff as well.
Saw them in concert and they were amazing. I love Uriah Heep
John Wetton is massively underrated. Great distinctive vocals, but also a fantastic bass player. His work with King Crimson (especially the "Red" and "Larks Tongues in Aspic" albums is spectacular)
Speaking of, they really should check out Wishbone Ash and Uriah Heep. Not enough reactions to either group!
"Asia" was a post "Yes" "supergroup" of progressive 70's icons.
Short lived but it gave the 80s something more than "new wave" and big hair.
They had the potential to be so much more.
@@bertisjordan1085 AMEN!! Convinced by the "culture execs" to make their inherent prog sound more "mainstream."
What IS "mainstream" today anyway but the sum total of media manipulation, cultural rape, leftist ideology, political spin and bold-faced lies!
I love their first two albums.
And hated by the prog snobs!
Actually, they reunited a lot, but with various lineups.
Check out these other great Asia songs. DON'T CRY/Asia, ONLY TIME WILL TELL/Asia, THE SMILE HAS LEFT YOUR EYES/Asia, GO/Asia.
Love Only Time will Tell
Definitely Only Time Will Tell.
He'll yes, yep, yes and yep!!!
Indeed, "Only Time Will Tell" is a great song!
"The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" for sure!!! The video is chilling, and the song ends on an amazing climax.
John Wetton (bass) was lead singer, one of the best voices in British progressive rock.
may he RIP. 💔🙏😢
Only Time Will Tell - Asia. This is another awesome fun banger that I know both of you will like. It was another early 80s hit. Love to see you react to that one next by Asia.
You guys are killing it with these reactions thank you so much!!
Only Time Will Tell is my favorite Asia song.
Jeff... absolutely a great suggestion!
That’s the track that made me buy the album. Best. Album. Ever. 😇
Asia was a "supergroup" meaning their members came from other successful bands. In Asia's case those bands were Yes, and Emerson Lake & Palmer. I think you would also like "Don't Cry", "Sole Survivor", and "Here Comes the Feeling".
And the singer is from King Crimson.
Yeah, John Wetton was an amazing bass player and singer with a real rock pedigree - both King Crimson and Uriah Heap, UK and more.
Came here to say this.
Geoff Downes was also in The Buggles.
There's a big Geoff Downes/Buggles influence on this song. The verses are lifted right from "Video Killed The Radio Star"
One of the greatest rock bands of all time.. there will never be a sound like theirs ever again. Love Asia!
A supergroup.
Vocals and bass - John Wetton (King Crimson)
Guitar - Steve Howe (Yes)
Keys - Geoff Downs (Yes/The Buggles)
Drums - Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake and Palmer)
video killed the radio star....first video evere on mtv
This is a mega band with members from a lot of different groups making great music, early 80s!!!!!!
Yes , much talent from some of the best rock bands ever.
ASIA was one of the first true supergroups...each member was already a superstar before joining forces together. And yes, they were an early 80's band.
God bless!!
The drummer is Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake and Palmer or ELP and you can see his incredible drum set and a great drum solo from the (Calif Jam 1974 ELP Karn Evin 9 1st impression pt-2). Carl Palmer also did the 1st ever recorded electric drum solo in (ELP's Toccata)
Yes! I was at Cal Jam (74). So many never to be forgotten moments. I wouldn't call that a drum "set", it was more like a drum "monument"!
3 Yrs ago I went to a Yes/Asia concert... The opening act was Carl Palmer doing the music of Emerson Lake and Palmer with Arthur Brown acting as the front man... Then John Lodge did the songs of Moody Blues... Then Carl came back and did a full set with Asia... the man was 69-70 and he played the heck out of those drums for two sets... he's in great shape... there are a lot of men half his age that don't have that kind of endurance.
Interesting to see Carl Palmer using a traditional grip with the sticks. Not something I would have normally noticed as a kid in the 80s -- except that my favorite drummer, Stewart Copeland, also used (uses) that grip.
@@rray848 being a drummer will keep your cardio in shape thats for sure
"Only Time Will Tell" "Don't Cry" "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" are their other three hits.
Sole Survivor.
Have you already heard my own time? Is the best underated song from them.
@@canaldoyu-gui3947 The John Payne era of Asia had some great songs as well! Check out "Ready to Go Home." ua-cam.com/video/cvXQdt3n9nA/v-deo.html
@@algallego Yeah man, this song is also great. People still talking about only time will tell, no doubt is a great song but My own time... Man... How can no one knows this masterpiece? And thank you for share this awesome music here 🙌
@@canaldoyu-gui3947 my vote for most underrated is There was a Time from Omega
Carl Palmer is definitely one of the greatest drummers on the planet. This was a slightly edited version. Only Time Will Tell is another good one by them.
I don’t know that I would go that far. Don’t get me wrong, he’s good. But certainly, not oneof the the greatest.
@josephwalker5577 well, have you heard anything by Emerson Lake and Palmer? I'm definitely not talking about Asia, he's very scaled down with his performance here. I mean the real Carl Palmer of ELP. As I said, one of the greatest. I did not say that he was THE greatest, but definitely one of the greatest.
I'm so lucky I was able to enjoy/love the 80's music. Being in high school during the beginning of the 80's was such a blast and the music just got better.
Agreed , but I am a bit younger. I turned 10 in December of 80 but by that time I had already been in piano lessons for 6yrs. My mom and my dad's youngest sister were concert promoters and I have been to a lot of shoes over the years
I am also a little younger than you , I graduated in 1990, so the 80’s were definitely my jams
Same
@@reneeholcomb205 The 80's rocked!!!!
OMG I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH!!!! I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU ARE LISTENING TO IT!!!!!!!!!
This always reminds my of my brother-in-law who used to have a cover band where the singer couldn't understand the lyrics "The disco hotspots hold no charm for you" and always sang "The disco hunchback holds a chair for you" instead. Makes me laugh every time I think of it.
😂😂😂 that's hilarious! I was in 6th grade and I always though it was "the disco hot rocks on the charts for you".
That's really funny!
I so much enjoy you guys sharing your reactions. I am a huge fan. Being 52 years old, I can recall waiting for just the right song to come on with a cassette loaded in the tecnics sereo system that occupied the top of my bedroom dresser. just hoping the radio dj didn't talk too long at the beginning or ending of the song and hoping the recording levels were p to par, the tape ran smoothly and all that. What a brilliant time to be alive that really was. I think this is one of the most bombastic of all 80's songs. The whole arrangement is theatrical and over the top just like being alive was, back in the day. you know what else it was? Vulnerable! Damn 80s musical artists were vulnerable! Innocent AF. SO DAMNED HONEST with themselves. I see today's youth as tremendously guarded hiding behind sweatshirt hoodie and ipods and running scared. Not that I blame them. They have 10x the awareness of imperfections in society as I did as a youth. They are doing what youg people do surviving until adulthood, surviving until they have a voice. Watching and calculating. In the 80's people just put it all out there recklessly, yet theatrically.. lWithout this channel I would have never made this connection or felt motivated to share. Praise God for youtube and for ROB SQUAD.
"Only Time Will Tell" is an absolute MUST. Very dramatic and has 'horns' (keyboard horns) too! "Don't Cry" also has Asia's dramatic stamp. They are a British SUPERGROUP consisting of members of Yes, King Crimson, and ELP.
I love Don’t Cry! And The Smile Has Left Your Eyes.
Only Time Will Tell is a great song!!! Best song on the album!!! ❤🙂👍
These were musicians who comfortably performed in front of tens or hundreds of thousands of fans in stadiums. They were also very intellectual as evidenced by the vocal harmonies and lyrics, both individually, in this group and their former groups.
Man, you guys are going back and digging. I love it! You will NEVER run out of great, not commonly known songs and artists if you keep doing what you're doing. I'm a fan, love you two!
I still have this album on vinyl. "Only Time Will Tell", "Sole Survivor", and "Time Again" are other favorites on this album. That's the legendary Steve Howe (formerly of "Yes") on lead guitar. After a couple of albums with "Asia", Howe joined another supergroup called "GTR". Songs by that band I recommend are, "When the Heart Rules the Mind" and "Imagining".
Asia's lead singer, John Wetton, passed away in January 2017.
Omg, high school! The memories! 1982. "Only Time Will Tell", should be next.
Keyboardist Geoffrey Downes was originally in the band The Buggles who's claim to fame was that the video for their song Video Killed The Radio Star was the first video ever played on MTV
I saw Asia about six times on their first tour. Each member was well established in other bands before they got together.
Steve Howe (Yes)- Guitar
John Wetton (King Crimson)- Lead vocals/Bass
Geoff Downes (Yes/The Buggles)- Keyboard
Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)- Drums
Great individual artists that wrote and performed great music as a group. Great reaction, you two really are expanding your music. I love that.
I graduated from high school in 1983. This is one of those songs that instantly brings my minds-eye back to that specific point in time. Things were much more innocent then, before the internet. Before cell phones. Before streaming music. This was a huge hit on FM radio back then. Another great one from Asia is "Only Time Will Tell".
This is an 80s band of amazing prog rock musicians. "Only Time Will Tell", "Don't Cry", "Summer Won't Last Too Long", "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" all bangers.
Asia was a Supergroup. John Wetton was from King Crimson, Carl Palmer was from Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Steve Howe from Yes, and Geoff Downes from the Buggles and Yes (for a while). I saw them live a few times back in the 80s and they were amazing.
Asia is one of my favorite 80s bands. Please do more Asia!
“In a Big Country” by Big Country came out around the same time. It’s totally your jam. (Nothing like Asia, which I also like.) If they listen, they should use the studio version. The official video cuts out the long drum intro, which is one of the best song openings.
Awesome song
I've recommended this one before!!
One of the best bands to come out of Scotland. Love how they make the guitars sound like bagpipes.
Absolutely agree. Big Country is actually my favorite band of all time.
LOVE THAT SONG!!!
I just love Don’t Cry. This song was playing when I got my first crush. Sigh… I was only 12 years old.💙
This song was literally stuck in my head ALL day yesterday. How serendipitous that you reacted to it!!
Asia was one of the first supergroups. John Wetton vocals and bass ,Jeff Downes keys, Steve Howe guitars, and Carl Palmer drums all were in successful groups Yes, King Crimson and Emerson Lake and Palmer. There were other incarnations of Asia but those original 4 were responsible for their biggest hit Heat of the Moment. Thanks for that blast from my past.
Saw John Wetton with Uriah Heep on the "High and Mighty" and "Return to Fantasy tours.
I think Wetton was so unheralded especially as a bass player. Definitely was a musician's musican.
In the early 1980s, Asia’s first record stayed at #1 on the Billboard Charts for MONTHs…I think it set some kind of record
This was huge in 1982-83. Great album cover art too. My senior year of high school, graduating in 83. Asia and Def Leppard's Pyromania, what an awesome year!
And now you find yourself in 82......is part of the song, this was early 80's
When you were young and parting and dancing with someone you crushed on ...in the Heat of the Moment!
One of the best songs of the 80’s. You will love this.
"Only Time Will Tell" is simply amazing. But "Days Like These" is a great one to get pumped to.
How about 'Sole Survivor" ?
Asia was a "Supergroup" from the 80s. SOOOOO much great music. 'Without You' is still one of my all-time fav songs.
The video is directed by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme half of the band 10cc. They left the band to do their own albums and got into directing videos when they were asked to do a promo video for their song 'An Englishman In New York', when the director that was hired to do it couldn't grasp the concept the duo were proposing; so, they did it themselves. They also directed The Police 'Every Breath You Take'.
I'm 50 !! This is my signature song of the 80's. Well 1 of many. But this song in particular - I was 9 and my mom was a huge music fan and she had this album. And I played this song along with only time will tell and Don't Cry over and over. Still do. My friend and I created a fictional band called " Big Gig " he actually a real musician - but this was the first song we put on our fake album. Total eclipse of the Heart was the B side :) yeah we were kids of the 80's and im so grateful I was a grateful you guys took a peek at this classic jam
Great reaction of an early ‘80s gem! “Time Again” and “Sole Survivor” are other greats by Asia.
Yes on "Sole Survivor" !
I got so much serotonin from this. One of my all time favorite bands and criminally underrated. PLEASE hit “only time will tell” and “one step closer”
Such an 80's classic. They never get old. Asia has a few other hits too. Check out "Don't Cry", "Only Time Will Tell" or "Sole Survivor".
"Go", "Only Time Will Tell, "Don't Cry" and a nice ballad "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes".
This was my late Uncle Chris’ favourite song, my family sing it together in his memory. This warmed my heart seeing other people enjoy Asia’s music just as my Uncle would have done, I’m sure he is smiling down from heaven watching this video. Thankyou 💙.
Asia....I don't know....there is something about this song and the song "Only Time Will Tell" that feel so bitter sweet. There is a beauty and sadness to them. Each time I hear these two songs, perhaps more than any other songs from my childhood, they pull back in time with such strength and longing, to some quiet magical space in the clouds just above the neon and the city streets. I was a pop chart kid so these two songs of Asia's are pretty much all I have ever heard from the band, but these two songs were more than enough to make me love Asia for the rest of my life! 82 crew!💖
The singer (and bass guitarist) is the late John Wetton. Great singer, great songwriter, great musician. If you like the drummer on this song, check out his solo with ELP at the California Jam. Carl Palmer is not just as good a drummer as has ever played, but an amazing showman, too.
Great song! Great Band! John Wetton on vocals and Bass, Carl Palmer on Drums, and Steve Howe on Guitar, Geoff Downes on Keyboard. They were a Rock Supergroup. You got ripped off, however, you got connected to a really short version of the song. Kudos to both of you for playing this band!
Always loved this one. The supergroups in the 80s had some unique hits.
My number 1 favourite group of all time.
I love this song - shoots me right back to the summer of 1982. I remember listening to it driving around in my yellow Toyota Celica. Ah, to be young again. lol
Lemme tell ya, Rob Squad, this song hits way different now than in 1982 when it came out and I was 11. Thanks for this brief trip back in time!!
Someone I had a crush on in high school gave me the Asia album for my 16th birthday. Nothing came of the relationship, but it's a fond memory every time I hear this song.
Considered as one of the very first super groups. A real blast from the past of high school for me. I heard their live shows were outstanding.
"The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" - Fantastic, deep song.
In the early summer of 1982, when I heard there was a band named ASIA featuring musicians from YES, King Crimson and Emerson Lake and Palmer, I rushed through my senior final English exam , drove to Record Bar at 10 am picked up the album, drove straight home, listened to it a couple of times then jumped behind my drums and proceeded to pick out Carl Palmer’s drum parts. I have bought every ASIA album when it came out for the last 40 years.
I'm glad you reacted to this great Asia song. Check out some other great hits of theirs like "Don't Cry", "Only Time Will Tell", "Days Like These", "Rock and Roll Dream", and "Go". All of these songs are Bangers.
40 years! Written by the late John Wetton and Geoff Downes. Produced by the late Mike Stone.
Supergroup. Members of King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Yes, Emerson , Lake and Palmer.
This is an 80s song: the year 82 appears in the 2nd verse.
RIP Mike Stone and John Wetton.
Suggested next video: Only Time Will Tell.
Buggles
@@pablomalaga4676 Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn 🎷 were members of The Buggles until the break up 💔.
They say the year in the song 82. " now you find yourself in 82"
Growing up I always thought they said “find yourself an empty tomb” like they were calling her hollow and empty inside. Hearing it again years later I realized it was “find yourself in ‘82.” Talk about time stamping your song.
@@amyk9175 I thought the same thing back then.
"Only Time Will Tell" is another great song by Asia.
This was an iconic radio friendly song by a band that I thought could've been so much more.
Why do I want to hear some Mike and the Mechanics now? 🤣
“Only Time Will Tell” has to be next. Great vocals and awesome COWBELL!!!!
There’s a lot more great songs from the band Asia you must listen to.The songs are Don’t Cry,The Smile has left your eyes,Voice of America. This band was one of my favorite bands growing up in the 80s .The lead singer John Wetton just passed away not to long ago and he had a great voice.
Got to see them back in '82 - great concert. Howe is probably my favorite guitarist. Glad you enjoyed the song!
Congrats on finding Asia. One of my favorite bands. A lot of bangers with excellent instrumentals and a very impacting voice. RIP John Wetton.
I remember Asia's biggest song being "Only Time Will Tell". It was so big my high school band instructor ordered the sheet music for it and we played it at EVERY function and competition...won everytime. You guys should check that one out.
The Smile has left your eyes. Only Time will Tell are two great Asia tunes
Every time I hear this or Only Time Will Tell that summer of '82 comes back like yesterday. Sights, sounds, music. Loved ones who are long gone now. Far too many of those. MTV of course. My cousin and I were 9 and ran around playing all day at our Grandparent's house. That first Asia album was pervasive and a massive hit; it seemed to be playing everywhere.
I'm a 55 yr old bass player and I used to play all these tunes back in the day!! It took longer to learn the tunes because you had to constantly stop and rewind or lift the needle!! Great memories! Kinda jamming them again too lol!! Peace
Sole survivor, don't cry, smile has left your eyes, go
I wish I could hear this song again for the first time.
Great band for sure. The Guitarist was Steve Howe from Yes. The drummer Carl Palmer from Emerson Lake & Palmer. The Bass player/Lead Vocals is John Wetton who came from King Crimson and UK. The keyboard player is Jeff Downes also came from Yes.
Only Time Will Tell is a must (and my own personal favourite). I can't help but associate that album with Chris De Burg's Spanish Train, Don Henley 's Dirty Laundry, and The Doors' Gold of Mine. I would play those albums one after the other, non stop. Oh the days before UA-cam, Spotify and the likes, when one would take the time to discover all the songs on the albums.
I have been following your Channel for a year now and I super appreciate you two!! I love your thorough reviews which add new insight to my thoughts and feelings of the songs/Bands/Artists. Thank you Jay and Amber for doing what you do!!
…”and now you find yourself in ‘82”….yep, 1982, the year I graduated high school, and this song and video, was in heavy rotation on MTV.
Time flies ⏰
I can't help thinking of the 'Supernatural' episode 'Mystery Spot' whenever I hear this song!🌮
Dude...Sam keep waking up to this on the radio. Such a f**king good episode 🤘 first time we meet a certain someone as well if I'm not mistaken.
Rise and shine, Sammy!!

I was 11-12 yrs old when this was released.
Asia always had great music and amazing cover art on their albums.
as many have stated this was a supergroup
carl palmer - drummer emerson lake and palmer
john wetton - bass king crimson
geoff downes - keyboards the buggles
steve howe - guitars yes
steve howe was a member of the supergroup GTR who had a hit When The Heart Rules The Mind
Welcome aboard! This is one of the groups that my future brother (in the early '80s) really liked. I learned to also enjoy their music over the years.
Asia was a great soupergroup of Rock musicians from the 1970s and late-1960s. The late John Wetton was the lead singer. Other hit songs/music videos from Asia are "Only Time Will Tell", "Sole Survivor", and "Don't Cry".
Marty, a fellow music student of mine in college in California in the 80s, was taken by a friend of his to a house in LA. He had no idea where he was going til he got to the house and realized the house belonged to Geoff, the keyboard player. He said they played til 3 in the morning. It was the greatest experience in his life, bloody fingers and all.
When I graduated from middle school in 1983, the theme song of our graduation was Asia's "Only Time Will Tell". They also had big hits in the early 80s with "Don't Cry", "Go", "and "Days LIke These". The lead singer's name is John Welton (who was also in King Crimson), the guitarist was Steve Howe (who was also in Yes), the keyboardist was Geoff Downes (also of Yes), and the drummer was Carl Palmer (of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer). A supergroup! AND ALSO... ASSUMING NOTHING GETS BLOCKED BETWEEN NOW AND THEN, YOU GUYS WILL HIT 1000 VIDEOS TOMORROW!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Definitely adding a vote for listening to Only time will tell! Thanks for reacting I love this group thanks to my parents.
this was one of the super groups made up of great musicians form various bands. kind of a dream team moment.
The original lineup reunited in 2006 to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Unfortunately John Wetton passed away in January of 2017 from colon cancer.
One of my favorite songs of 80s, listened to it maybe 100 times.
Well! ....... now this was a blast from the past.... that's fer sure. I remembered it straight away. What a beautiful song/voice. 😎🇬🇧🎼🎤
Released in 1982. I became a radio rock DJ when this was released and loved this song.
I had this on 45 (I took the records from an old jukebox a pizza place was junking) when I was little kid. I've always loved it. It was always one of my favorite 80s songs. It still gives me goosebumps if I haven't heard it for a while... like now. Thanks for the review and reminding me of this song. I can't believe it has been a few years since the last time I listened to it.
Tip, in case you actually read this comment: Most of Asia's music sounds like hit songs. Some of their songs definitely won't appeal to every taste. They were really talented and experimental, producing some really unique (for the time) sounding music. As with all art, if you're exploring a style that's new and unique you're not going to please everyone. Their depth wasn't necessarily in their lyrics so much (still they were usually good) as their instrumentals, arrangement, and vocals. Anyway, I don't think you'll regret it just listening to their albums sometime. You're almost certainly going to hear something that strongly appeals to your tastes.
Carl Palmer is now the only surviving member of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. I saw him in concert with ELP in 1977. He is an incredible drummer!
I loved Asia, They were a supergroup that got together from different bands and yes ALL were very good at their instruments. A good song to show off some of that might be "Time and Time Again" but you cant go wrong with Sole Survivor, or Only Time Will Tell, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes and several others.
YES! Only Time Will Tell is awesome, too! Saw them in concert with Journey. Good times! 80s all the way!!
Asia had a really great uplifting song on their hits album called "Days like these". You guys would love the positive vibes!
Love both songs such a vastly underrated group..
Crazy to think this song was recorded in one take, true legends.🤘
Asia was an 80s "supergroup" -- guitarist Steve Howe was from Yes, and bassist/lead vocalist John Wetton was from King Crimson, keyboardist Geoff Downed was from both Yes and The Buggles, and drummer Carl Palmer was from Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
The Buggles' big hit "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the VERY FIRST video to be played on MTV.
For Carl Palmer, almost any ELP song suggested will be a good thing. They were a magnificent band.
For Steve Howe's best with Yes, check out Close to the Edge.
For John Wetton's playing/singing with King Crimson, pretty much anything off their album Red should be considered.
ASIA is HUGE!!! thats a deep dive you're in for
