Yeah they saw how Bethesda gets tonnes of mods with similar rules for modding so they thought they would so the same. But.. the difference is Skyrim comes with a tool to make mods so it's not comparable. And skyrim mods (unless they are using Script Extender) that contain scripts use a language Bethesda made them selves called Papyrus so it is even less comparable.
This is a big reason that FTB (the company) is floundering. They pay their devs and artists, and then give away their mods and modpacks for free, but it's getting harder and harder for them to do this without breaking some rule. As it stands now, they pretty much count on a launcher with ads to fill in the gap. Everyone hates it, since it is no longer compatible with modpacks from Curseforge or Modrinth. It's a frustrating reality to be in.
Mojang giving secret explanations and then demanding them be kept secret has forever ruined my image of them. They are beyond shady in many ways, and act in abusive/manipulative ways which contradict how they expect their community to behave.
I'm trying to recover my son's Minecraft account right now because we moved computers and Microsoft has completely screwed me over. He only ever uses it to play Minecraft, but the account is a Microsoft Online account now, and Microsoft is useless when it comes to customer service. They seem to have explicitly designed their system to prevent people from getting help.
Microsoft. Reread their rules. Aside from 1. Minecraft is for "everyone," each rule contains a heavily politically charged buzzword. They are openly announcing that they WILL be policing any and all political speech, and removing the creator for wrong-think.
I trust Mojang so little at this point that I honestly could see them try to remove your ability to download and launch older versions of minecraft within a few years. I really need to go make backups of old versions and modpacks to play offline incase they do do something crazy

Not just companies. Dead laws, being laws that aren't actually enforced, have been increasing in number all throughout the west, as have usage terms for products all over. Effectively what they are is a wall of unenforced rules, which once they are enforced to the fullest, will disallow anything and everything within its scope. Death by a thousand cuts. I suggest best cause of action is do it anyways in the name of raising money for kids with cancer. Do it in a way that will 100% get Microsoft to do something then use that as 100% undeniable proof that Microsoft doesn't want to help kids with cancer.

The officer pulling you over has full authority to determine if the conditions are too poor for you to drive at the speed limit.

Here's an idea: Given the size of MC's playerbase, get as many players as possible to break these ambiguous rules as to create as much work for there legal department as possible. Sooner or later it'll become financially unfeasible for them to enforce their own rules.

Mojang are really treading into "Biting the hand that feeds you" territory, they managed to pull Minecraft out of obscurity once, but if they keep things up, NOTHING will bring Minecraft back into the spotlight a third time, so on that note, i REALLY hope that Mojang is watching and listening to this and the outcries of the community in general.

Like, seriously, banning (any) references to firearms and realistic weapons? That just feels over the top and hurts the MAJORITY of the playerbase to "protect" the 2 8 year olds whom play the game. Not to mention that this kills many already existing mods/servers who rely on this, and forcing them to rebrand to something "child friendly", killing their playerbase in the process.
It's a real shame that one of the biggest examples of games that give you absolute freedom is becoming the complete opposite now. If you play your way and it's not the way a 5 year old would play it, then you're not allowed to play it, doesn't help that they also just focus more on this than updating the game in general. The new wood pallet and mob with basic AI we've seen since 2009 is really helping me digest the loss of freedom in this game that once represented true freedom in games. (also hey Pig)
As someone who has attended both official and unofficial Minecraft events, the fact that in-person Minecraft events are essentially dead is heartbreaking to me. Those events are some of my favorite memories associated with the game. I have been wanting for 6 YEARS for Minecon to make a return, but it feels like Mojang is still living in 2020.
I wish Minevention had taken them to court, because there's no way Microsol was in the right here. Sure, they could restrict them from using Minecraft's name and other branding, both in promoting the event and _maaaybe_ in terms of the conference events, but, like, if companies could prevent people from gathering at paid events around content they were passionate about, SEGA and Nintendo would have killed all Furry gatherings years ago.
I've never had the chance to go to a Minecraft convention. I've always hoped either Minecon would come back some day or there would be a third-party convention I would have the chance to go to, but now it's looking like that may never happen. I don't understand what Mojang has against third-party conventions, like what's their problem with a group of people interested in Minecraft coming together and setting up an event?

This is why "legalese", despite the bad reputation it gets from the public, is actually really important and exists at all. Broad language used by normal people is not precise enough to allow for clear limits on activity or rules. I am disappointed with the direction microsoft has taken regarding minecraft. They are dismantling the very things that allowed minecraft to grow and flourish back in the early 2010s. A relaxed, lasseiz faire approach to rules and user content allows the maximum amount of freedom for all ages. It will lead to extremes, but it will also mean a stronger community overall.

I wish I could have attended the early Minecon conventions myself but I was too young at that time to travel by myself. Minecraft Earth is rubbish and doesn't target the whole community. They are trying to focus on the younger demographic too hard. They themselves should know that some people grow with the game and therefore should also go with time.

I remember shortly before the MUG ToS got updated a friend of mine was an active player on a WW2 factions server and Mojang kept repeatedly delisting it due to "usage of violence". Troublemakers and bigots were banned without hesitation, but Mojang didn't trust it enough and repeatedly kept trying to blacklist it. The server owners were still able to keep up the IP and circumvent Mojang's takedown attempts, but after the server was done and the event was over, Microsoft quite literally shadow banned everyone including my friend. They were permanently locked out of their Microsoft accounts and contacting support resulted in a "sorry but we can't help you", causing them to not only make new Microsoft accounts but to rebuy Minecraft. It was absolutely BS and honestly all of these updates feel like retaliation over that server/those users and what happened with it all.

I've never considered Minecraft to be a kid's game. It certainly wasn't kids who made it the monster brand that it has become. I am in my 60s now and have been playing it since Beta. I have played Bedrock because Microsoft/Mojang gave Bedrock to Java players for free. I was thoroughly under-awed and am disappointed that Java seems to be getting slowly phased out

Louis Rossmann has drafted a new term I think needs to be used more often, he calls it "EULA Roofying." And that is essentially what this is. Hidden deep within the EULA, is clauses basically saying "We can take anything any everything even remotely related to us in any way shape or form any time for any reason we want and you cannot sue us for it." People don't have time to read the long as hell EULA, so while Mojang and Microsoft *technically* got consent from you via EULA you agree to by playing the game, they did it in the least moral way possible.
The part people don’t know including apparently most corporate Eula offices is that there is a “reasonable limit” in law for what you can expect a person to agree to. I don’t know the exact law or wording but for example you can bury in legalese jargon in a EULA a clause that says “if you use our product on tuesdays we can arbitrarily take money from your bank account because you agree we own your bank account” If this was ever taken to court the argument is that the average person does not speak legalese jargon and no reasonable person would ever agree to this if they knew it was in there

I remember having so much hope for Minecraft. between 1.13 to 1.16, I thought "Finally, a company that cares about it's users and listens to them", but over the years I've come to the same conclusion as almost everyone else. The idea that a company could care about it's users is hopelessly naive.

The worst part about this is that the rules are worded in a way to breed corruption. Mojang employees have the right to enforce, or to refuse to enforce, these rules as much as possible. What happens if two Mojang employees disagree on where to enforce something?

The goal is pretty clear to me. They want to set the actionable level so low that they can just action anyone at any time for any reason. What I've gathered from this is that Mojang doesn't want you doing anything with the game except playing the vanilla version by yourself or with a small group of friends. The community built Minecraft. I’ve been saying this for years. All these new imposed “rules” are just an attempt to dismantle and rid Minecraft of what made it so great. It’s community. All of this for what? To appease investors ? Greed? Jesus. What else is there to look for apart from huge wealth they already made. But they can’t see or don’t care in the value of a community this passionate and loving of the game, that is now bit by bit being disposed for whatever goal they might want to obtain.

You know I think we are entering a new age of company policies. It's not just Mojang doing this. We have seen the same with Unity, Wizards of the cost, Games workshop, Amazon, etc. Companies keep changing policies to say they can now have enough customers to do as they please.

To use your speed limit analogy: It's basically like having a sign saying 50, but it has a little note saying "or maybe less, we reserve the right to change the meaning of this sign at any point" So basically you never know if the sign STILL means 50, or if they have secretly decided for your car its actually just 45
So, funnily enough that's sort of the law. A cop can decide you're driving unsafely, there's a lot of leeway. At best that's used when you're weaving, drifting to one side, rapidly accelerating and braking for no reason.

@@pim691 I've seen a version of something like this with speed laws. The visible speed limit signs weren't actually on the edge of the speed zone they were for, but were slightly inside of it and a few police officers here actually used that for a while to meet quotas.

Fr. It’s infuriating. I have so much to say about how they’re ruining the game, from the game itself to the EULA. However, it seems they don’t care and not enough people do either to make GOOD changes.
Well them purposefully removing mods because they don't meet guidelines, they're doing something we cant control, modding the game how we want, the morons. Minecraft is becoming outdated because of the way they are handling the game in its legal service.
Creepers and Endermen are legacy content. They are only in the game because they have been for so long. I don't exactly remember where, but I remember hearing that if the Creeper had never existed, it would have never been added today.

It's ironic how things are changing. Minecraft was always the more mature platform I played as a kid, and roblox was a kids platform when I was smaller. Now that I'm older now, an early adult, roblox is allowing/embracing 17+ games and communities and encouraging them to get more creative, while minecraft is buckling down on becoming the more kid friendly platform. They're doing a switchup 😮 I went on a drinking pub on roblox and chatted with a bunch of other adults my age, some of them drinking. It was wild!

Mojang just doesn't have the track record of doing so themselves, until they were owned by their Microsoft Overlords. It only makes sense that their overlords would implement practices they see as common on their newly owned product, of which doesn't have the ground to fight back since they're owned by Microsoft. Do you have any examples of Mojang making major negative changes like these before they were owned by Microsoft, or major changes that don't align to Microsofts typical actions?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. These changes are the final straw for me. I quit minecraft. I don't expect others to do the same, but when I can find games that do exactly what minecraft does better, for cheaper, without dumb rules and policies, I fail to see why I'd stick around with minecraft for anything other than nostalgia. And boy, those rose tinted glasses are doing a lot of the heavy lifting in hiding red flags.

I would strongly recommend that you watch the recent video going over the full text of the EULA by the channel "Moon Channel," in which he (an actual lawyer) goes over the new EULA and compares it to previous versions and similar games' EULAs. To summarize, basically every single thing being complained about with the new EULA was present in the previous EULAs, but just not clarified and written with muddy language. The previous EULAs having less clarification doesn't mean they gave more freedom, it's just that now you can more easily see "the line in the sand" before you trip over it. Not to say that all of the criticism isn’t warranted, but it seems the real problem isn’t any new changes but rather the incredibly overly-complicated and outdated US IP law. EULAs are most often put in place just to prevent potential legal liability on the hands of the company, and they haven’t enforced many of the points in the past. Any recommendations you have? I really like games with a sandbox focus rather than forced gameplay to it. I also don't like the stress of survival in survival/horror games so finding replacements is not easy.
Fellow Minecrafters, take a lesson from the DnD community; if you want them to listen, you have to find a way to make them hear you where it hurts; their wallet. Make your demands, find a stream of income they care about, and boycott until your standards are met. Do not yield.
The people who care have already given their money away. And kids who badger their parents to buy Minecraft do not have the capacity to care anyway. Mojang/Microsoft knows this, that's why they cater primarily to minors, where they can get away with pretty much anything.

Microsoft squeezing every $ they can out of the game. The things i had to do to set up a home private server to play with my kids recently was insane. Cant play locally without EVERYONE having a microsoft account and then the hard push to do it in realms is frustrating. What used to take literal minutes too setup and get people playing took over 3 hours

The youtubers really kickstarted minecraft. The first videos they made made people join, and then make more videos, then more people. We the community rose up the game, and we could easily take it down.

I always see this move with big companies to "Protect" their brand, but all this does is lock them down so they can't make any profits later down the line, turning an amazing game for so long, to absolute trash where the community is no longer valued. I wouldn't be surprised if this turns into Mojang hosting their own Minecraft servers, and eventually pulling support for custom servers, alongside the Java edition entirely.
I feel like, because of the way Java Edition servers work, Mojang literally cannot get rid of them as they are now. They’ve already released the .jar files to make the servers, and quite a bit more than dozens of Java Edition versions that connect to multiplayer this way. They could try to remove every previous version of Java Edition from the Launcher and make the latest version the only one you can launch, but the official Launcher is not the only launcher that there is. TLDR: If I can just up and make brand new server on whatever version of Java Edition I want, I don’t think Mojang can get rid of Java Edition multiplayer as it is now.
At this point I hope the recent severe US national security issue with Microsoft makes the US government disband Microsoft, making Minecraft public domain. It's unlikely and relies on a corrupt piece of sh!t, but i still hope for it.

I keep saying that this is all an overly elaborate means to try force people to use Realms instead of their own private Java-edition servers, and I keep getting proven right. Let's see what we're at so far: .) They tried to add an automoderator to the ingame chat with a rather baffling list of "banned words", with the consequence for being banned by this automod being that you were locked out of multiplayer entirely for a time, if not permanently. There was no way to disable this feature on a Java server, but a Realm owner could turn it off for their Realm. However, modders managed to thwart this by creating mods that rendered this feature useless. .) They are trying to remove mods that they deem to be "harmful to Minecraft's image" (or whatever schlock they used to word it) which we all know damn well means "we're going to find a reason to get rid of all the popular Java edition mods". Without all those fun mods, there wouldn't be much point to have a Java server over a Realm. .) They're clearly trying to find a way to go after content creators who use all those fun Java edition mods. After all, if people keep seeing all those fun mods that can only be played on Java servers being played by content creators, they're not going to bother getting a Realm (those can't be modded, after all), but rather will either play on a modded Java server or pay a third party to host their own. And MicroJang doesn't make any money off of that. I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that content creators who use modded Java servers are going to be held to much stricter standards than content creators who use a Realm.
whenever I hear that a dev is going after mods for their game, I immediately view that as a red flag like sure cheating is a problem, but content mods? ones that don't just give you an unfair advantage but instead add content to the game that the people using said mod would like to see? why go after those? this is especially worrying in a singleplayer/mostly singleplayer game, where there is no "harmful" mod since its entirely user-driven

With how many creators and small businesses have built themselves up from Minecraft as their foundation (with Minecraft initially welcoming and being accomodating with such activities), i'm shocked that folks don't consider a class-action lawsuit against drastic policy changes/reversals such as this..
Thank you so many people are like we must do something about this but it is just lip service if some of the big channels did something about this we would have a fighting chance. For example if even half the people on hermit craft would do something about this which half of them have a stake in this because they are in the modding community or run there own big server, we could get stuff done

I already said it every time I could to everyone I met. The fact that my server should be banned just because I decided it will be more realistic in dialogues and actions, and because I have NPC talking about murders, stealing or other stuff that might be very, very not OK to kids... that makes me sick. I made a good lore with shady decisions, shady characters and I even have a warning that it might not be ok to minors. I'm so glad that noone is gonna care, since it's not in english and there is a small community. But it's still stupid.
What happened to "No one can tell you what you can or cannot do?" It looks like Mojang has gone from a personal, friendly developer, to just another soulless corporation that cares about nothing but money. It is sad and pathetic to see what they are doing to the game that has been my childhood.

I am so glad to see a content creator speak out against Mojang. It seems like a lot of content creators are afraid to disagree with Mojang. I would also like to point out that political messaging is strictly prohibited unless you have Mojang's consent. This seems like an easy way for Mojang to push political messaging onto the playerbase. And again, as I do whenever I see a video about Mojang's dystopian power fantasy, I must point out the reason: competition. If any other game were to do something this shitty to its community, the community would just leave and play a different game. But because there are no sandbox games remotely close to Minecraft, the community can't do that, and so we are stuck either not playing Minecraft or dealing with a corrupt company.

There is Terraria, which is close enough that people could reasonably make the switch, but it's limited just enough that by itself it can't compete against the Blocky Juggernaught.
They arguably already do try to push political messaging - not in a significant manner, but some of the splash texts now shouldn't be anywhere near a game generally played by a very young audience
You guys did a great job with the video, I’m really getting sick and tired of all the new guidelines coming from all these companies like Minecraft and most online games as well as certain social media platforms. I can’t even type simple sentences on signs or in chat boxes anymore because it either gets censored or I get a warning message I’ve never even used any offensive or bad words I like to write stories in book and quills in Minecraft I typed an entire page and it deleted the entire page because I used the word Night I mean Really!?!?, I’m trying to get my UA-cam channel off the ground and I’m really worried how this could affect my new Minecraft comedy series. I’m also concerned this could lead to several old Minecraft series or videos being taken off UA-cam and other platforms eventually and that we wouldn’t be able to rewatch them anymore and that would be a very sad day for me and so many others. So sad, Minecraft used to be a place where everyone could be themselves and do whatever they want and now they’re saying they get to decide what is unique and what isn’t, the whole point of Minecraft is every world, every player, every mob and every build is unique and different stop trying to control us and let us do what we want again.
As someone who really, deeply, genuinely loves Minecraft as a game, it suuuper sucks to see all this happen. Given how vague and poorly laid-out these rules are, I'd question how enforcible a lot of the EULA and MUG even is. To me, it looks like Mojang didn’t even bother to hire a lawyer to help them write this, which is exceptionally stupid, especially when you consider that a legal document would probably be easier to understand.

One thing that has pissed me off for a while is how about half of the Mojang supported server on Bedrock edition are pay to win and probably break a ton of other rules that are fair like gambling but are not only ignored but shown to everyone who owns a copy of Bedrock edition and it makes sense why since you buy stuff in Minecoins so Mojang/Microsoft are making money from it unlike Java
YES!! As somebody who owns and mostly plays Minecraft on the Switch, I agree. The only servers we can even have are those Pay to Win ones, and I rarely ever play on them because of it. Let's not even talk about Mineville, you can't even do anything without purchasing a gamepass for it. Other servers are a tiny bit better (not Galaxite), but they still have SO MUCH they have that are locked behind paywalls.
You can actually add servers on switch you just have to go through the effort of messing with the settings in a weird way. You can probably find it if you look it up but that still doesn’t make it any better

Somehow I get the impression that all the people who were joking about all the terrible things that would be done to the game following the acquisition by Microsoft weren't expecting to see things like this being introduced.
@explodoboyv2 they probably wanted to wait until a significant amount of the players from that era moved on so they could make their changes with less community resistance. I gave up on them at 1.9 after realizing it wasn't gonna get better. As soon as bedrock edition was made, it was pretty clear this is their chosen direction.
Legally speaking this could be a bit messy for them considering they’re providing contradictory information about their EULA and MUG to different groups of players. With the addition of a ‘gag order’ not to tell people or show anyone what they said within those private messages. Also considering things like sharing screenshots a commercial act, especially when sharing content with others is a core aspect of the user experience, could be seen as overly restrictive. Like, their EULA even states “Your local law may give you rights that this EULA cannot change; if so, this EULA applies as far as the law allows” So I’m a US citizen, we have Fair Use laws and them considering the act of sharing content like a screenshot would be directly infringing on those.
This is the big lie of a lot of these contracts. Most of them aren’t legal but people assume they are and they might as well be as long aa no one takes it to court
As someone who makes minecraft maps under a brand, I can’t tell you how terrifying the new rules are. It’s a shame that I can’t quit Minecraft in protest as long as I’m actively updating these maps.

Most of what's said here is already illegal in the EU, the point is to scare people into following the rules by threatening everyone with expensive lawsuits. Companies have been doing this for ages.
Minecraft's issues like these you describe are only going to get worse, which is unfortunate because servers and online multiplayer were a massive part of what has made this game survive as long as it has while being as popular as it is.
There is a great video from a lawyer " A Lawyer Explains the New Minecraft EULA ". There he describes how the new Minecraft EULA did not get any stricter but in fact made the rules more transparent by clearly defining what was already there.
It really is ironic that an update to the EULA that was only supposed to make things clearer ended up creating a disaster where misinformation spread like wildfire.
Keep in mind that the last time Mojang did an overhaul in the EULA back in 2014, they started enforcing their rules. In 2014, Mojang changed the EULA so that servers can't give ANY advantages for paying users. This was a bad idea. However, before the change, it was actually prohibited to monetize ANYTHING related to Minecraft! So the change was good, right? Making the rules more accessible for server owners, they at least can give cosmetics and non-gameplay advantageous features! After the change, they started enforcing, and banning, servers that broke the EULA, which caused a lot of big servers to shutdown because monetizing things based on only cosmetics is hard. Whereas before the changes no server was punished for breaking the EULA. I guess this may happen again with these new changes.
I think their commercial use guidelines might actually be unenforceable. Fair use is a thing and if they decide to try to enforce that they may actually not be able to do so.

Similar crackdowns happened to D&D when Wizards of the Coast decided to and revole their OLG 1.0 which allowed content creators to use their rule set to create their own content. Wizards tried to revoke this to increase their profits by charging absurd royalties and heavily restricting what content creators could make. The backlash was so bad and the company lost so much money in cancelled D&DBeyond subscriptions and other products that the company released a bunch of content into Creative Commons and cancelled the release of 6th edition to try and appease their fan base

Content creators who upload Minecraft videos and anywhere within that video provide links or self-promotion for merch raise questions as to whether that qualifies as marketing products or brands unrelated to Minecraft. Does Mojang/Microsoft have the power, by this section, to take down content that is tied to a content creator raising money through support of their channel by merch?

@@_Revengist Problem is, that the MC EULA and Section 107 are contradicting eachother in this sense. If i'm not mistaken, criticism is one of the outlined exceptions in the section which cannot be copyrighted for the content itself (the other exceptions are news reporting, comment, education and research use).

Yeah they saw how Bethesda gets tonnes of mods with similar rules for modding so they thought they would so the same. But.. the difference is Skyrim comes with a tool to make mods so it's not comparable. And skyrim mods (unless they are using Script Extender) that contain scripts use a language Bethesda made them selves called Papyrus so it is even less comparable.
However to the bedrock modders for their shop. "Except you, you stay."
This is a big reason that FTB (the company) is floundering. They pay their devs and artists, and then give away their mods and modpacks for free, but it's getting harder and harder for them to do this without breaking some rule.
As it stands now, they pretty much count on a launcher with ads to fill in the gap. Everyone hates it, since it is no longer compatible with modpacks from Curseforge or Modrinth. It's a frustrating reality to be in.

I'm trying to recover my son's Minecraft account right now because we moved computers and Microsoft has completely screwed me over. He only ever uses it to play Minecraft, but the account is a Microsoft Online account now, and Microsoft is useless when it comes to customer service. They seem to have explicitly designed their system to prevent people from getting help.

Like, seriously, banning (any) references to firearms and realistic weapons? That just feels over the top and hurts the MAJORITY of the playerbase to "protect" the 2 8 year olds whom play the game. Not to mention that this kills many already existing mods/servers who rely on this, and forcing them to rebrand to something "child friendly", killing their playerbase in the process.
It's a real shame that one of the biggest examples of games that give you absolute freedom is becoming the complete opposite now. If you play your way and it's not the way a 5 year old would play it, then you're not allowed to play it, doesn't help that they also just focus more on this than updating the game in general. The new wood pallet and mob with basic AI we've seen since 2009 is really helping me digest the loss of freedom in this game that once represented true freedom in games.

As someone who has attended both official and unofficial Minecraft events, the fact that in-person Minecraft events are essentially dead is heartbreaking to me. Those events are some of my favorite memories associated with the game. I have been wanting for 6 YEARS for Minecon to make a return, but it feels like Mojang is still living in 2020.
I wish Minevention had taken them to court, because there's no way Microsol was in the right here. Sure, they could restrict them from using Minecraft's name and other branding, both in promoting the event and _maaaybe_ in terms of the conference events, but, like, if companies could prevent people from gathering at paid events around content they were passionate about, SEGA and Nintendo would have killed all Furry gatherings years ago.

I've always hoped either Minecon would come back some day or there would be a third-party convention I would have the chance to go to, but now it's looking like that may never happen. This is why "legalese", despite the bad reputation it gets from the public, is actually really important and exists at all. Broad language used by normal people is not precise enough to allow for clear limits on activity or rules. I am disappointed with the direction microsoft has taken regarding minecraft. They are dismantling the very things that allowed minecraft to grow and flourish back in the early 2010s. A relaxed, lasseiz faire approach to rules and user content allows the maximum amount of freedom for all ages. It will lead to extremes, but it will also mean a stronger community overall.
This is why I love the Catechism of the Catholic church. It is precise while using common language.

Edit: Damn 500 likes for a comment I never thought would be interesting. There are some points to consider regarding Microsoft and Mojang. They are both part of the same cooperation and therefore with the new account rules due to migration follow the same guidelines. Their management and cooperate identity management has become bloated and doesn't allow progress and innovation. I wish I could have attended the early Minecon conventions myself but I was too young at that time to travel by myself. Minecraft Earth is rubbish and doesn't target the whole community. They are trying to focus on the younger demographic too hard. They themselves should know that some people grow with the game and therefore should also go with time.

I remember shortly before the MUG ToS got updated a friend of mine was an active player on a WW2 factions server and Mojang kept repeatedly delisting it due to "usage of violence". Troublemakers and bigots were banned without hesitation, but Mojang didn't trust it enough and repeatedly kept trying to blacklist it. The server owners were still able to keep up the IP and circumvent Mojang's takedown attempts, but after the server was done and the event was over, Microsoft quite literally shadow banned everyone including my friend. They were permanently locked out of their Microsoft accounts and contacting support resulted in a "sorry but we can't help you", causing them to not only make new Microsoft accounts but to rebuy Minecraft. It was absolutely BS and honestly all of these updates feel like retaliation over that server/those users and what happened with it all.

I've never considered Minecraft to be a kid's game. It certainly wasn't kids who made it the monster brand that it has become. I am in my 60s now and have been playing it since Beta. I have played Bedrock because Microsoft/Mojang gave Bedrock to Java players for free. I was thoroughly under-awed and am disappointed that Java seems to be getting slowly phased out

Louis Rossmann has drafted a new term I think needs to be used more often, he calls it "EULA Roofying." And that is essentially what this is. Hidden deep within the EULA, is clauses basically saying "We can take anything any everything even remotely related to us in any way shape or form any time for any reason we want and you cannot sue us for it." People don't have time to read the long as hell EULA, so while Mojang and Microsoft *technically* got consent from you via EULA you agree to by playing the game, they did it in the least moral way possible.

I don’t know the exact law or wording but for example you can bury in legalese jargon in a EULA a clause that says “if you use our product on tuesdays we can arbitrarily take money from your bank account because you agree we own your bank account”
If this was ever taken to court the argument is that the average person does not speak legalese jargon and no reasonable person would ever agree to this if they knew it was in there

The goal is pretty clear to me. They want to set the actionable level so low that they can just action anyone at any time for any reason. Everything will continue on as normal but they will descend to smite those not following the secret rules they kept to themselves and which might actually just be the will of whatever capricious CEO that controls the strings of this feels.

What I've gathered from this is that Mojang doesn't want you doing anything with the game except playing the vanilla version by yourself or with a small group of friends. They don't want you doing anything with the game that made it so unique in the first place.
Mojang is essentially trying to kill the Minecraft we knew.
They want to own the community that we built.
They also want people on bedrock edition and buying all the microtransactions

You know I think we are entering a new age of company policies. It's not just Mojang doing this. We have seen the same with Unity, Wizards of the cost, Games workshop, Amazon, etc. Companies keep changing policies to say they can now have enough customers to do as they please.
Money talks. If people stop showing up, stop buying things, etc. from big corporations and put their funds into local and family/employee owned companies and services, the big guys will crash... It's not a matter of if, it's when.

It's ironic how things are changing. Minecraft was always the more mature platform I played as a kid, and roblox was a kids platform when I was smaller. Now that I'm older now, an early adult, roblox is allowing/embracing 17+ games and communities and encouraging them to get more creative, while minecraft is buckling down on becoming the more kid friendly platform. I've said it before and I'll say it again. These changes are the final straw for me. I quit minecraft. I don't expect others to do the same, but when I can find games that do exactly what minecraft does better, for cheaper, without dumb rules and policies, I fail to see why I'd stick around with minecraft for anything other than nostalgia. And boy, those rose tinted glasses are doing a lot of the heavy lifting in hiding red flags.

I would strongly recommend that you watch the recent video going over the full text of the EULA by the channel "Moon Channel," in which he (an actual lawyer) goes over the new EULA and compares it to previous versions and similar games' EULAs.
To summarize, basically every single thing being complained about with the new EULA was present in the previous EULAs, but just not clarified and written with muddy language. The previous EULAs having less clarification doesn't mean they gave more freedom, it's just that now you can more easily see "the line in the sand" before you trip over it.
Not to say that all of the criticism isn’t warranted, but it seems the real problem isn’t any new changes but rather the incredibly overly-complicated and outdated US IP law. EULAs are most often put in place just to prevent potential legal liability on the hands of the company, and they haven’t enforced many of the points in the past.

Make your demands, find a stream of income they care about, and boycott until your standards are met. Do not yield.
The people who care have already given their money away. And kids who badger their parents to buy Minecraft do not have the capacity to care anyway. Mojang/Microsoft knows this, that's why they cater primarily to minors, where they can get away with pretty much anything.
You should definitely do a crossover video about this heavy subject with LegalEagle, one of the biggest UA-cam law experts. He would be able to decipher the "legal jargon" that Mojang is using in that traitorous new rulebook.

Cant play locally without EVERYONE having a microsoft account and then the hard push to do it in realms is frustrating. What used to take literal minutes too setup and get people playing took over 3 hours

The youtubers really kickstarted minecraft. The first videos they made made people join, and then make more videos, then more people. We the community rose up the game, and we could easily take it down.

I wouldn't be surprised if this turns into Mojang hosting their own Minecraft servers, and eventually pulling support for custom servers, alongside the Java edition entirely.
I feel like, because of the way Java Edition servers work, Mojang literally cannot get rid of them as they are now. They’ve already released the .jar files to make the servers, and quite a bit more than dozens of Java Edition versions that connect to multiplayer this way. They could try to remove every previous version of Java Edition from the Launcher and make the latest version the only one you can launch, but the official Launcher is not the only launcher that there is.
TLDR: If I can just up and make brand new server on whatever version of Java Edition I want, I don’t think Mojang can get rid of Java Edition multiplayer as it is now.

I keep saying that this is all an overly elaborate means to try force people to use Realms instead of their own private Java-edition servers, and I keep getting proven right. Let's see what we're at so far:
.) They tried to add an automoderator to the ingame chat with a rather baffling list of "banned words", with the consequence for being banned by this automod being that you were locked out of multiplayer entirely for a time, if not permanently. There was no way to disable this feature on a Java server, but a Realm owner could turn it off for their Realm. However, modders managed to thwart this by creating mods that rendered this feature useless.
.) They are trying to remove mods that they deem to be "harmful to Minecraft's image" (or whatever schlock they used to word it) which we all know damn well means "we're going to find a reason to get rid of all the popular Java edition mods". Without all those fun mods, there wouldn't be much point to have a Java server over a Realm.
.) They're clearly trying to find a way to go after content creators who use all those fun Java edition mods. After all, if people keep seeing all those fun mods that can only be played on Java servers being played by content creators, they're not going to bother getting a Realm (those can't be modded, after all), but rather will either play on a modded Java server or pay a third party to host their own. And MicroJang doesn't make any money off of that. I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that content creators who use modded Java servers are going to be held to much stricter standards than content creators who use a Realm.
whenever I hear that a dev is going after mods for their game, I immediately view that as a red flag
like sure cheating is a problem, but content mods? ones that don't just give you an unfair advantage but instead add content to the game that the people using said mod would like to see? why go after those?
this is especially worrying in a singleplayer/mostly singleplayer game, where there is no "harmful" mod since its entirely user-driven

The fact that my server should be banned just because I decided it will be more realistic in dialogues and actions, and because I have NPC talking about murders, stealing or other stuff that might be very, very not OK to kids... that makes me sick. I made a good lore with shady decisions, shady characters and I even have a warning that it might not be ok to minors.

I am so glad to see a content creator speak out against Mojang. It seems like a lot of content creators are afraid to disagree with Mojang.
I would also like to point out that political messaging is strictly prohibited unless you have Mojang's consent. This seems like an easy way for Mojang to push political messaging onto the playerbase.
And again, as I do whenever I see a video about Mojang's dystopian power fantasy, I must point out the reason: competition. If any other game were to do something this shitty to its community, the community would just leave and play a different game. But because there are no sandbox games remotely close to Minecraft, the community can't do that, and so we are stuck either not playing Minecraft or dealing with a corrupt company.

There is Terraria, which is close enough that people could reasonably make the switch, but it's limited just enough that by itself it can't compete against the Blocky Juggernaught.
They arguably already do try to push political messaging - not in a significant manner, but some of the splash texts now shouldn't be anywhere near a game generally played by a very young audience

You guys did a great job with the video, I’m really getting sick and tired of all the new guidelines coming from all these companies like Minecraft and most online games as well as certain social media platforms. I can’t even type simple sentences on signs or in chat boxes anymore because it either gets censored or I get a warning message I’ve never even used any offensive or bad words I like to write stories in book and quills in Minecraft I typed an entire page and it deleted the entire page because I used the word Night I mean Really!?!?, I’m trying to get my UA-cam channel off the ground and I’m really worried how this could affect my new Minecraft comedy series. I’m also concerned this could lead to several old Minecraft series or videos being taken off UA-cam and other platforms eventually and that we wouldn’t be able to rewatch them anymore and that would be a very sad day for me and so many others.
So sad, Minecraft used to be a place where everyone could be themselves and do whatever they want and now they’re saying they get to decide what is unique and what isn’t, the whole point of Minecraft is every world, every player, every mob and every build is unique and different stop trying to control us and let us do what we want again.
As someone who really, deeply, genuinely loves Minecraft as a game, it suuuper sucks to see all this happen. Given how vague and poorly laid-out these rules are, I'd question how enforcible a lot of the EULA and MUG even is. To me, it looks like Mojang didn’t even bother to hire a lawyer to help them write this, which is exceptionally stupid, especially when you consider that a legal document would probably be easier to understand.

They're basically saying "We don't want to bother making any rules, so we'll just decide for you if what you are doing is OK", which is a recipe for disaster

Yeah this whole thing is non-legal documents being interpreted by by non-lawyers and its a recipe for disaster. There's also the funny bit of if you don't have to physically declare your agreement to this trashfire until they've already got your money, you can wipe your ass with the entire "contract" anyway because it's post-hoc and automatically invalid.

One thing that has pissed me off for a while is how about half of the Mojang supported server on Bedrock edition are pay to win and probably break a ton of other rules that are fair like gambling but are not only ignored but shown to everyone who owns a copy of Bedrock edition and it makes sense why since you buy stuff in Minecoins so Mojang/Microsoft are making money from it unlike Java
YES!! As somebody who owns and mostly plays Minecraft on the Switch, I agree. The only servers we can even have are those Pay to Win ones, and I rarely ever play on them because of it. Let's not even talk about Mineville, you can't even do anything without purchasing a gamepass for it. Other servers are a tiny bit better (not Galaxite), but they still have SO MUCH they have that are locked behind paywalls.
You can actually add servers on switch you just have to go through the effort of messing with the settings in a weird way. You can probably find it if you look it up but that still doesn’t make it any better

It's genuinely nauseating to see this fall from grace. To see that Mojang now seems to actively hate it's community that worked so hard to build this game.
I think it should now be illegal for mega corporations like microsoft and mojang to protect the integrity of their brand by taking down content.
Mojang should not "reserve the right" to do any of this crap.
Corporations should have no rights at all.

Somehow I get the impression that all the people who were joking about all the terrible things that would be done to the game following the acquisition by Microsoft weren't expecting to see things like this being introduced.

@explodoboyv2 they probably wanted to wait until a significant amount of the players from that era moved on so they could make their changes with less community resistance. I gave up on them at 1.9 after realizing it wasn't gonna get better. As soon as bedrock edition was made, it was pretty clear this is their chosen direction.

Legally speaking this could be a bit messy for them considering they’re providing contradictory information about their EULA and MUG to different groups of players. With the addition of a ‘gag order’ not to tell people or show anyone what they said within those private messages.
Also considering things like sharing screenshots a commercial act, especially when sharing content with others is a core aspect of the user experience, could be seen as overly restrictive. Like, their EULA even states
“Your local law may give you rights that this EULA cannot change; if so, this EULA applies as far as the law allows”
So I’m a US citizen, we have Fair Use laws and them considering the act of sharing content like a screenshot would be directly infringing on those.
This is the big lie of a lot of these contracts. Most of them aren’t legal but people assume they are and they might as well be as long aa no one takes it to court
As someone who makes minecraft maps under a brand, I can’t tell you how terrifying the new rules are. It’s a shame that I can’t quit Minecraft in protest as long as I’m actively updating these maps.

Remember how the European Union strongarmed Apple into using USB-C instead of their garbage proprietary cable? Here's hoping the Brussels Effect comes for Minecraft soon and forces them to change these stupid TOS as well

Most of what's said here is already illegal in the EU, the point is to scare people into following the rules by threatening everyone with expensive lawsuits. Companies have been doing this for ages.

Minecraft's issues like these you describe are only going to get worse, which is unfortunate because servers and online multiplayer were a massive part of what has made this game survive as long as it has while being as popular as it is.

There is a great video from a lawyer " A Lawyer Explains the New Minecraft EULA ". There he describes how the new Minecraft EULA did not get any stricter but in fact made the rules more transparent by clearly defining what was already there.

It really is ironic that an update to the EULA that was only supposed to make things clearer ended up creating a disaster where misinformation spread like wildfire.
Except that isn't even true.
Keep in mind that the last time Mojang did an overhaul in the EULA back in 2014, they started enforcing their rules.
In 2014, Mojang changed the EULA so that servers can't give ANY advantages for paying users. This was a bad idea. However, before the change, it was actually prohibited to monetize ANYTHING related to Minecraft! So the change was good, right? Making the rules more accessible for server owners, they at least can give cosmetics and non-gameplay advantageous features!
After the change, they started enforcing, and banning, servers that broke the EULA, which caused a lot of big servers to shutdown because monetizing things based on only cosmetics is hard. Whereas before the changes no server was punished for breaking the EULA.
I guess this may happen again with these new changes.

I think their commercial use guidelines might actually be unenforceable. Fair use is a thing and if they decide to try to enforce that they may actually not be able to do so.

@@TheFuckingKrayz the document says it's limited by such laws. That means it doesn't have much teeth in either country (unless someone simply let's it happen to them) but it will affect players in other countries

Similar crackdowns happened to D&D when Wizards of the Coast decided to and revole their OLG 1.0 which allowed content creators to use their rule set to create their own content. Wizards tried to revoke this to increase their profits by charging absurd royalties and heavily restricting what content creators could make. The backlash was so bad and the company lost so much money in cancelled D&DBeyond subscriptions and other products that the company released a bunch of content into Creative Commons and cancelled the release of 6th edition to try and appease their fan base
