This is not our coffee. We use the regular one, like you use too in America. You just bought pads. Why? You need a special machine for it.

According to statistics, the proportion of smokers in 2015 was 11.4% in the USA and 20.9% in Germany. To say in the USA *nobody* smokes and in Germany *everyone* seems a little exaggerated even if it is clearly more in Germany.😃

It is just - In the US smoking is not allowed in so many places most people just do not smoke in public anymore here you can smoke where ever you like I guess that leads to misconception

#7 There are sometimes special stores called "Spirituosenhandel" or "Spirituosen- & Weinhandel". There you can get more brands or they can order them for you. Also there are special stores for catering supplies where restaurants/pubs/bars/hotels/etc. buy their supplies, they have often a wider variety of brands.

If you want a certain Whisky and you can wait a day just order it on amazon.de. It is also cheaper than in the most stores. Until today I never had a broken bottle.

Missi, about the coffee pads. They are everywhere in Germany because it is easy make a coffee in a coffee pad machine. But they still have the other coffee types too whole and grounded coffee beans. Just read or if it feels heavy and compact it is the ground coffee... I bet you could feel it. Just use your senses Missi. In case of an emergency you can just dump the coffee pad in your cup and poor the hot water over it (4-5min) like a tea bag... not perfect but works. LIFE IS TO SHORT FOR BAD COFFEE!

You picked coffee pads which are ment to be used for coffee machines like Philips Senseo. There should be normal coffee as well. The wending machine for cigarettes is usually only for cigarettes but sometimes they also sell condoms. You need to present either your ID or your bank card for age verification otherwise you cannot use them. Kids are not allowed to smoke or to buy cigarettes till they are 16. Buying alcohol is is the same. Cashier at the grocery store are supposed to check your age when selling alcohol or tabac.

    • @JakobFischer60
      @JakobFischer60 6 років тому +1

Yeah, but there is no age restriction for buying condoms ;)

The age for smoking in public was raised from 16 to 18 in 2007.
This also means that parents could allow smoking at home.

Those cigarette machines (Zigarettenautomaten) are in fact what you think they are. They were quite common everywhere till smoking got more banned and seen unhealthy about 20 years ago. Before that, you simply put some coins in and get a packet. Nowadays, you need your ID card (they have a slot for it) or other ways to proof your age (18) to get the cigarettes. As ads for cigarettes are also kinda banned now, you now see them in more or less hidden places (like toilettes as you already noticed).

If you want water without bubbles you gotta pay attention to what it says on the bottle. if it say "Still" or "Stilles Wasser" then its without bubbles.

  • @thydan3579
    @thydan3579 6 років тому

point 2 .. select water with "still" in the meaning of beeing quiet, so you get water without bubbles, for the Coffee pads ... you nedd a "Senseo" or a copy of that ... Aldi i.e. sell their own copy of senseo at the stores ... or you go to "media Markt",or a " Saturn" storer and ask for a " Senseo" Copy, . You also can buy the original " Senseo" but it is a bit more expansive.

about the smoking: Not everyone smokes, I'm 23 and actually there aren't any smokers in my closer group of friends either (not even weed for the most part, even though I go to an art school lol)
However quite a lot of people do smoke. I definitely know plenty of them. I've never understood why anyone would want to start smoking...I think it's gross but oh well.
I guess it was cool with the "oh so cool kids" back in highschool :'D
The coffee pads you showed are meant to used for a specific kind of coffee machine, I guess they are popular here, we also have normal loose coffee though, then there's another type of machine which uses coffee capsules.
Sparkly water is just very normal and standard in German, it's not considered special here at all, When you order a glass of water somewhere, make sure to say you want stilles Wasser if you don't want sparkly water.

Smoking vendors are exactly what you think they are - the only items they sell in addition to cigarettes are lighters. The reason for those machines is that - as you pointed out - they are everywhere, so people have short distances to stock up - coupled with the old shopping times in Germany when shops were open from like 08:00 am to 7 pm on weekdays and 8 am to 3 pm on Saturday. On Sunday most shops are closed - except for gas stations (which also sell other things people might need on a Sunday in a hurry) and shometimes shops in train station malls as well as shops at airports. The machines allowed (and still do) smokers to stock up when they couldn't otherwise.

please, please - really, absolutely NO OFFENSE intended !!!! - where are you from ? So “naive“ - I think it is so great you made it to Germany. There is so much to learn, like: you can get carbonated water everywhere in the USA . Aldi Süd has over 1000 Aldi US stores in the USA and Aldi Nord is owner of Trader Joe's. Why does the US even have liquor stores not first place.
Last not and not surprising, you can get almost anything “American“ in Germany just like you can find almost anything “German“ in the USA.

It's funny, I have some friends from different countries who used to live in germany for some time. At the beginning sparkling water seems strange to them. After some time the got used to it. Now, that they moved to their home country again, they really miss it and taken any chance to get sparkling water they get. :)

In any bigger supermarket you get most likely any alcohol you want. If you are looking for some fancy or rare whisky for example you should find a "Spirituosenfachgeschäft" in your city. They will order your special brand for you. If you are too lazy for that you can order your hard stuff online. For example on whisky.de

Edit: OK, later on you remembered. I know the term from Futurama:
Bender: "Heyhey, a suicide booth! So long, suckers!"
Fry: "Err. Sorry Bender, that's just a phone booth."
    Bender: "Oh..."
Leela: "What were they used for?"
    Fry: "In New York? Bathrooms."
Leela: "Oh. I'll be out in a sec."

Cigarettes and smoking are a result of american occupation after world war ii.
The marlboro ads came into the cinema and lived there for 60 years ... but the smoking rate is depending a lot on education level. The higher the education the higher the likelihood for nonsmokers. Smoking is no longer allowed in restaurants and pubs and companies like before until 2008. People have to smoke outside

    re: smoking
Since Germany raised the legel age for smoking from 16 to 18, it has become more attractive to children.
There is a German proverb, "Was verboten ist macht uns an". (We get hot about what's forbidden.)

I only clicked this because of the toilet paper issue you promised in part 1.
I have some personal statistics for you from Germany, it's not representative nor in any way scientific.
98% of public train or bus stations hold a reservoir of 1-layer toilet paper.
About 70% of tourist towns have 2 or more public toilets, with 2- or 3-layer paper.
In Germany, the way to the nearest public toilet is usually marked by a "WC" sign, in white print on blue ground. WC means "water closet". -- Mind that the signs are not a legal requirement, every community can decide on their own whether to put them up.
I never encountered scented paper on a public loo, but maybe it's because I'm a man, and I tend rather not to defecate on a toilet bowl I don't own.

Searching for mineral water without bubbles you can find it everywhere. But you have to look at the bottle when you are grocery-shopping - there are 3 kinds of labels
    1. "prickelnd" which means "sparkling" = with bubbles
    2. "mild" which has less and smaller bubbles than the "prickelnd" one
    3. "still" which literally means "silent" = without bubbles
And the size of the bottle is no issue if the water is sparkling or not.
You just have to take a closer look.
And in a restaurant/pub/gym/store what ever you have to order "stilles Mineralwasser" than you will get mineral water without bubbles.
    Just a tip

no we stare compared to Americans or the British and Irish. It is really no utter BS. I have lived in Ireland and me normally looking at people was considered staring.
But it is not only us same in the Netherlands, Poland, Scandinavia it seems we just look longer at people as the normal north american and we still look if they look back that makes them uncomfortable and it is what they call staring.

The bad part of sparkling water is the gas making it more difficult to drink
