  • Those who follow me on Instagram know I recently visited Solingen and got to see my FIRST CASTLE 😁. It was tons of fun! Checking out the Wuppertal Zoo was another amazing experience, and the Schwebebahn... hahaha the Schwebebahn. Only one death in 100 years!

    The "wired bus" is actually called a trolleybus in English. In German we call it an Oberleitungsbus (O-Bus for short) or Trolleybus although these are not very common any more. Nowadays there are experiments with wired trucks (Oberleitungs-Lkw). Some cities also have wired city/suburban/regional trains called Strassenbahn (Straba for short). And of course we have the normal wired trains powered by Elloks/E-Loks (Eletrische Lokomotiven; electrical lokomotives), ICE's (Inter City Express) or wired ET's (Elektro-Triebwagen).
    When it comes to castles, Burg Hohenzollern is also worth a visit. When you go to Neuschwanstein, don't forget about Hohenschwangau which is located just on the adjacent mountain. There Bavarian fairy tale prince Ludwig II. was born and raised before he commissioned the construction of Neuschwanstein. If you have a chance you can also check out Haut Koenigsbourg/
    Hochkönigsburg near Strassbourg, the capital of Alsace region in France, just near the German border.

    I've been to this castle more times than I can count on visits to my wife's hometown (Solingen). What we really like is to have a nice Bergisch waffel with homemade ice cream in Café Voigt on the premises, or at Kalkum Cafe next door. Depending on the time of year, with a spiced wine or a coffee.

    It's one of the best castles in Germany, because it's old (12th century) and was build for the actualy role of being a fortress, unlike Neuschwanstein, which was just a fancy gaudy building ...
    So yeah, it's a real castle. Another very cool old castle is Burg Eltz which is not too extremely far away. Halfway to that is Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz, which is more like a fortress.

    If I remember correctly that one person died only some years ago. Until then they claimed that no one was ever hurt. So they had to switch to "only one person died".

      Wasn't it a construction worker? So sad, and the elephant story is just plain craziness.

      A construction worker forgot to remove a mounting clamp from the rail.
      This informative video has all accidents between minutes 4 and 5.

      The accident was in 1999, five passengers died. There were a few injuries caused by other accidents, but none of them was fatal.

      I was with real live Germans this time so no issues 😅. Incidents only happen when I'm left alone apparently.

    Are you aware we have nearly 500 castles in Germany?
    Please come to Frankfurt and visit our world famous zoo 😁
    Whenever you have the chance travel Germany by car. This small country is just beautiful with amazing landscape.
    You could also take a cruise on the river Rhein.
    Actually after travelling the world for decades I do explore my choosen homecountry nowadays.
    I decided for 3 routes:
    From Sylt( all up north, Nordsee) to drive the utmost western part of Germany going south to Bodensee, most along river Rhein, incl Schwarzwald and Elsass.
    No 2: from Hamburg driving the middle part down south til Algäu.
    No 3: from Kiel direction (Ostseeküste) and than down south til München. To enjoy the eatern part of Germany.
    All on my one.
    With my german BMW cabrio.
    And going home to beloved Frankfurt in between.
    Oh, I choosed to become german recently...
    Anyway, enjoy our great country!

    For all people who think the picture with the elephant was edited... It's NOT!
    My mom was born in this (ugly AF) city and this accident did actually happen a couple of decades ago!

    As for the Zoos, you should maybe consider a trip to the Netherlands and see Burger Zoo. Check it out, it's amazing. If you ever come to Hamburg and you find the time to check our Zoo (which is called Tierpark here), make sure to visit the Aquarium - it's not just about fish!

    Regarding castles I would like to recommend Burg Eltz, it is less grand than Neuschwanstein but it is still a really big castle with a very unique hogwartsy/thrown together look. I really liked it personally.

    The Castle is really nice, especially with the half timberd parts. Since you are so impressed with the zoo, i hope you will have the Chance to visit the zoo Berlin and Wilhelma in Stuttgart.
    Good that you did spend time with germans. This way you can improve your language skill. Being in a country and talking with the natives. One night i did watch Tom Crewther learning dutch in 20 days. Interesting and entertaining.

    With public transportation Schloss Burg is hard to reach. And is in fact in many ways a 19.-century-reconstruction. Altena is truely big, good to reach by train and more classical looking. But easy to reach from Düsseldorf is also Burg Linn in Krefeld. It is a big water-castle, 15 minutes footway from the Station Krefeld-Linn. Of course, there are lots of other Castles, just most are much smaller. Just ask, if you want to learn more! (I am both a historian and reenacter.) ... And you started with the Schwebebahn in Vohwinkel, right? Are you aware that from there also go busses for the german blade Museum? (Maybe that is for Special interests...) Museums... have you been to the Neanderthal-Museum yet? (It also has ist own station just 30 minutes or so from Düsseldorf.)

    You should take a trip to Hamburg. Esp. during the biggest harbour feast in the world - Hafengeburtstag. Tons of food, music, fun and more than 1million people from all around the world. May 10th - 13th this year. You can also visit the oldest and nicest zoo in Germany (Hagenbeck). Check out the videos on UA-cam.

    "Schloss" = "castle"
    "Burg" = "castle".
    It's literally called "castle castle"?

    • @eichzoernchen
      @eichzoernchen 5 років тому

      Yes. It's called "Schloss Burg"... There's a difference between those words in Germany. "Burg" is a medieval knight's military fortress, "Schloss" means a palace for living...

      google "Burg Altena Aufzug" for more Pictures.
      translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fschloss-hohenlimburg.de%2Fbesucherinformationen%2F&edit-text=&act=url
      Its in Altena, a few miles north-east to Wuppertal.
      When you look at a map look for the next big town to the north - it should be Hagen.... Hohenlimburg is a suburban of Hagen btw so travel expenses by train is almost nothing. I think 3,50 € (Zusatz Ticket) if you got a ticket 2000 or familiar already, if not it's "Preisstufe" B or C.
      From Hohenlimburg to Altena you have to leave the VRR area, which means you have to buy an extra ticket for i think 8€.
      The ticket for the castle is another 10€ so the whole trip could be done for 25€ (at least when you take the S8 and the Abellio instead of the ICE) ;o)

    Almost nothing from this castle is built before the 19th century. Even the keep is situated a few meters away from the place it used to be in medieval times.
