Lesser known fact: Double decker buses in the UK - run by the Deutsche Bahn. Arriva is a 100% daughter company of the German Railway.

I think the lack of trash comes down to the bluntness of Germans. If we see someone dropping trash, we will probably call them out. Germans generally say what they think in comparison to people from the UK or US. They would probably mind their business. Following the rules is just part of the German mindset.

The reason why Germany seems to look in every place consistently nice/bad is because of federal politics. Taxes from rich cities are used to keep up the living standard in areas that aren't that rich. You might say that this sounds unfair for the rich parts of the country, but it's also in their interest. If we would have only good living standards in the cities, they would collapse under the pressure created by the people who would move out of their poor villages. This would result in unbearable traffic and astronomical rent prices. (Yes there are already cities like Munich, Stuttgart and Frankfurt, who suffer under high prices and traffic but for other reasons)

    • @imrehundertwasser7094

The problem is that this is overdone, and sometimes, after they had to pay the subsidies, the "rich" states have less money to spend per capita than the "poor" states. There's also almost no incentive for the "poor" states to try to raise more taxes of their own. Also, the "rich" states sometimes don't bother to go after company tax fraud as hard as they could, because the additional taxes they could raise would mostly benefit not them, but the "poor" states. So that system is not without its problems.

@@imrehundertwasser7094 Wrong. Former interior minister Scheuble re-assiged task of tax crime from the financial authorities to customs authorities ( to facilitate tax fraud? ) who suffer from insufficient personell. So, our politicians "help" criminals by neglecting penalties on white washing money from criminal activities.

    • @imrehundertwasser7094
      @imrehundertwasser7094 5 років тому +1

@@Miwosanur423 Customs (Zollfahndungsdienst) are only responsible to look after tax fraud if federal taxes are concerned. For everything else (most of the taxes), the states have their "Steuerfahndung". The federal interior minister cannot simply "re-assign" this, laws would have to be changed with the consent of the states. Apart from that, states sometimes deliberately impede tax investigations too. Look up the "Steuerfahnder-Affäre" in Hesse several years ago.

    • @wudruffwildcard252

Well there wouldn't even be a reason of distributing taxes from (not) rich cities (rather) big cities to other cities or states if the corporate taxes were fairly distributed. In Germany most corporate taxes go to where the HQs of companys are. So even if there are big factories in other parts in Germany where the real work is done, the taxes go mostly to the city where the headquarters are situated.
And of course big companies prefer their headquarters in representitive locations, so big cities in the city center where everybody can see the corporate neon sign flickering in the night! So poor cities go to work and big cities collect the money and the poor cities have to beg to get their self earned money back!

Pudding in the UK and Pudding in Germany are two different things though.
In germany it's a sweet dish made from milk, usually with chocolate or vanilla. Sometimes fruits. It has a jelly-type consistency and is popular among kids.
But it's a common cultural shock for german speaking people when they learn that pudding in the UK is made from pigs blood. Not that that's a bad thing, personally I think blood is delicious, but if you are expecting something sweet with chocolate or vanilla and you get blood instead, it's usually not a welcome surprise.

I never liked "Kehrwoche" while living in Germany, but now that I moved to the UK I wish we could bring it here. Cleaning the streats would help a lot to make the cities look nicer. I have to agree, it is shockingly dirty here, even in nicer parts of the citities, which is a shame because the UK is actually a lovely place to be.

We do have ugly places too tho... just look at some east german soviet style cities (well that might be up to taste), many places where the industry has either died out or moved away i.e. in Northrhine Westphalia and many less nice neighberhoods especially (but not exclusively) cheaper areas were many immigrant families (especially turkish ones) tend to aggregate. But thanks your positive words:) I always love to see foreigners/immigrants enjoying it here.

The problem is with the UK and I say this as a Brit, we seem to be the least European country of them all and don't seem to share in a lot of the benefits of what other European countries have.
It's a shame really because much of the system is in place to allow it unlike in the US.
In any case, there are good and bad places in almost all countries but having traveled a lot, I perfer European countries the most, more so once you get past the culture shock, now if only us Brits in the UK realise how much better things could be if we was willing to learn from our European friends.

Interesting. I'm from Germany, and have been on vacation several times in England and Scotland.
I think, Germany lives more here and now, whereas England lives in the past. Many british still think they are an empire, like 1900. They still haven't understood that these times are over.
Nevertheless, if you are interested in history, i recommend a trip to England. There are probably only a few countries in the world, with such an eventful history, that has been preserved to this day, and can be visited. Not to forget all the artifacts, stolen from all sorts of countries ^^
Scotland is an ideal country to relax, and gather new strength.

Pudding is "Black Pudding" used in a full breakfast (what you described)
Pudding in general is the course you have after dinner (= desert).
Pudding is generally ready, heavy, stodgy.
    However enjoyed the video.
Re weight issues, the UK is following the US down the path of junk/processed food more quickly than other European nations though it is a problem which is slowly spreading.
The ideal diet (in a general sense) - look back to before the 70's when big commerce got into the game.

The accents thing is really interesting to me. Just fascinating how much a language can differ. But you have that in all languages and countries: Even a normal German has difficulties understanding an thick Bavarian accent and if someone speaking that accent meets some "Platt"-speaking German from the north, I guess communication is almost impossible. I've noticed that in India too. There was even a situation a local told me about another one: "He speaks my language, but I don't understand him at all". The local was from the north and the speaker was from the south of India.

I live in a small-ish town near London and it's generally clean and tidy with some areas being better off than others. As for London, it is an overcrowded city and is not a great representation of what the rest of the UK is like. Also, you're more likely to come across a foreign person in London than a British one, it's just incredibly diverse and so un-British in many ways which I am not saying is a good or a bad thing, it's just how it is.

    • @liquidminds
      @liquidminds 6 років тому

I feel like that's the case in many countries. In rural areas, you often get into troubles with your neighbours if you let your home look like crap. They want to live in an area that is looking nice and if you don't comply, they usually let you know. In larger cities, the anonymity of the city often stops that. People tend to think if they throw their garbage on the street someone will come and pick it up. It's annoying and disgusting, but it's not really a national thing, but rather a thing between rural areas and towns. At least in my experience.

Justine - unfortunately England is just dirty and filled with litter even outside of London, even in market towns, smaller cities, up north, many continental Europeans from various countries notice it. Go up north and you see the same thing, even in homogeneous more ethnically English places.

UK, London, well, if you're living in the north of London you'll probably have difficulties understanding someone from the southwest. It's like a little country in the country. I liked it when i lived over there.
As long as you don't start talking about football people are friendly and upfront.
Dirty, yes, but cuddly and cosy on the inside. If you can make it out to the countryside you'll find old houses, not like in Germany, but made of stones. The North - i didn't go, but went to Ireland, another beautyfull place to be.
    Dublin is worth a visit.
Someone mentioned France: also the countryside is very nice, very old houses, a lot of green, the bigger cities (Marseille, Bodeaux) have a medieval center, very nice. But, yes, you have to learn french, not many english speakers over there.
My suggestion, as you are "based" in Wuppertal: The Netherlands, someone else also mentioned it. Dont go to Amsterdam, too many tourists (I bet you'll go anyway)! It's crowded, expensive and there are other cities in NL to visit like Leeuwarden or Groningen. Visit the coastal region, the "Wattenmeer". From there go northwest back to Germany, enjoy a frisian tea, eventually visit one of the holms (Halligen), very impressive.
    Enjoy!
Oh, and nice to see and hear you again.

Was it Silas Nacita or Connor Sullivan, one of them said in a video that small town Germany is the modern day Shire. And who does not want to live in the Shire?
In other terms, any comparison between the neat smaller German cities and London is a bit unfair. Comparing Berlin with London would be more appropriate because all the big cities have similar problems.
And about all the Germans being nice: Didn't you have a different experience with that lady calling the police on you without any apparent reason? Did this incident finally resolve?

It is wonderful for you to expand your horizons... Differences exist all over this planet... The same is true in the USA. There are parts of this country where if you ask for a "water fountain" none of the younger locals will have a clue what you are referring to. If you need to drink water, you need the bubbler ... Then there is "soda" vs "pop" vs "coke"(then you must tell what flavor.) I spent two months in a small town in Southern Sweden, where I had to walk everywhere, and near the end learned that I was risking my safety passing through a ghetto every day. The area was clean, well kept and no signs of urban/rural blight but "bad people" lived there. I once stayed at a three star hotel outside of Toronto that happened to be situated in the middle of a large public housing complex and again, it looked like rather nice apartments. I later learned that the authorities in Ontario do not tolerate the trashiness and other signs of urban blight which we have in the USA. It is great for you to document what you are experiencing and if you are there long enough, you will pick up on some of the sounds and expressions. The locals will help you.

  • @hannes3d

The funny thing is that in London many streets that look like a ghetto are owned bye really really rich investors but nobody lives inside these houses ..so nobody cleans anything or so the investors wait to make a move and build something else and then everything will be fine again in germany the owner gets a fine if the building is dirty and waste is in your garden ...
Germans are the most overweight people in europ yes germany is cleaner but London is a very special place in the world you have huge ghettos but noboy lives there and the owners wait to build expensive buildings and such ...and ther are ghettos in germany as well ... but the people that clean the streets are really good best example is Karneval after the street parade it looks like a junkyard all over ... and the next morning everything is clean again .

It's true that Germany is cleaner (in the cities) than english cities, generally speaking. Although if you visit other places in the UK, like Cornish towns for example , you'll see it's very different from London or Manchester. I think your experience was a bit limited to big, known capital cities, which never truly represent a country and its people.
I feel like everything you mentioned just had to do with 'outward' things, concerning the looks.
I have lived in Germany for 30 years and live in England now, in Brighton. English people are so much friendlier than Germans, especially in talking to strangers (which hardly anyone in Germany does), it's so easy to meet people! And there is so much more internationality here, diversity, even in food! The amount of different food places we have in Brighton alone is INSANE. And London too. It's really hard to find a bad food place in London?! I would love to know where you found them , if you explored more than just malls and central London, but also the amazing neighbourhood in the East, West, North of London? They are bursting with unique restaurants and not chain restaurants.
And I have definitely seen more overweight people in the US than in the UK, LOL :)
I hope you'll have a nicer experience living here and moving forward, than what you've had so far! xxx

Germany has some advantages and disadvantages compared to other European countries, but is a good compromise. The two biggest downsides of the UK for me are the health system and the railway network. In the UK you do not get certain treatments if you are "too old". The number of hospital rooms is much too small. The railway network was privatized and is in a very bad shape. Train tickets at some lines can be more expensive than taking a taxi, which is quite insane.
I wish Germany had a city like London though. Berlin comes close in some aspects, but there it has very bad flight connections for example and is not an economically important city at all. Berlin's slogan is "poor but sexy".
Some smaller countries (population wise) in Europe even have a better quality of life than Germany. Sweden for example and Switzerland. The Netherlands are also a very nice place. I like the dutch people very much.
I must admit that the cities and villages in France generally are so much more beautiful than the German ones. They often have very strict building codes and often still look like 500 years ago. That makes them look like an open air museum, but a beautiful one.

You get a good overview of many regions in France and those nice villages if you watch the famous bike tour "Tour de France" on television. It begins July 3rd and during the tour they often show helicopter shots of the villages along the route. Personally I did not visit many cities and villages in France yet. The famoust one I have seen so far is Riquewihr near the German border, but that one looks more like a German village, as that area was part of Germany in the past.
There are certainly some villages that look more French. Those for example:

well if you are in Britain I suggest to visit Scotland just for the language experience you would make there...you said that the "yorkshire" way of speaking is "kind a special" so to say ...than you should definitively go to Scotland...They have the funniest way of speaking english regarding to their accent, their specific phrases they use, and their "language melody" so to say as well...I simply love it...(I´m a native german-speaker by the way so my perspective is the perspective of an outsider comparing the different types of english of course)
Or Liverpool because their "scouse-accent" is also very local specific and also very funny to hear...

Pudding is not just fried pigs blood, that is black pudding, the name comes from the colour and the mixer of different stuffs. As for the generic pudding, yes you are right , it is something sweet, custard and pudding, etc, cream and apple pie would be classed as a pudding. As for the dirt i agree, but a lot of local councils have had their funds cut, so no government money . Germany got rebuilt after the war, so everything is looks new and is renew constantly. As for the Disney feeling of the place i got this same feeling while living in Holland. Every thing is new or designed like a Disney setting, again due to ww2 Uk is generally dirtier though. lack of education etc but its getting better, but remember its older as well. As for typical English food there is one called crumpets, lovely food, mainly eaten at breakfast or late night snack. You toast them en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crumpet, at one time people only put butter on them, now they you can have anything you want, butter, cheese, jam (jelly for you) chocolate etc, its region dependent, as again my kids do not buy them where they live in midlands, ie their mother does not buy them, so when they come to Manchester to visits, the first thing they ask me is there any crumpets or Yorkshire puddings lol

Black pudding is a northern English dish en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pudding. I live in Bury as the article says, you can get it quite easily. Despite the name and ingredient is is quite nice though. It is very filling and as a spice edge to it. I do not buy it now, due other reasons. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pudding. So do not assume because your american your wrong and besides if your unsure you can always ask, they cannot force you to it east it or buy lol . Also there is another pudding called Yorkshire pudding, its just a pastry shaped like a pudding hence the name. You can have it on a main dinner with potatoes gravy and meat etc My kid love it any they live in Wolverhampton in the midlands, it is not made or sold there. There are a lot of foods that are still sold here in the uk due to the war, custom and affordability, though people do not like eat it much, mainly the older generation. For example my mother would eat tripe, which to me is disgusting, looks and takes like but in the 30s and wars years et al people eat what they could.

As for food, and its similarity with america, do not forget the British and the Americans share a basic culture, same language etc, there are difference, food translates well here etc. Your right about the amount of food, but do not forget with have a fast pace society, so a lot of people find it hard to work, go home and cook, it takes time, every one is working, distances to work are a lot shorter than america, so people used cars for everything here and public transport. Still the shops sell a lot of cheap rubbish, ie chocolates and sweet stuff, cakes, candy. I think this was due to rationing on our national psyche, it did not end till about 1953 in the UK. So pre-made food have a lot of fats in them, lots of sugar and salts. There is a massive decline in homemade food, where the food would have a lot less of the above in them. Also people do not exercise more, again not much time, too tired, etc. Job security in the UK is very poor, so one has to constantly work hard to keep your jobs, some people have more than one job etc. So in combination of poor food in shops which are cheaper, lots of takeaways food shops, long work hours, lots high salt/ sugar content with no exercise-result bigger people . Also wages are lower so not many can join gyms, too expensive. I remember in the 80s my dutch friend would come over to the UK and tell us the would have chocolate for breakfast on bread , or what we call smarties ie, candy cover chocolate. We thought that was very strange and disgusting, no my children and i have would have it i bought some chocolate spread. Once i was in Amsterdam and my friend had a fish, on bread roll, yuk it was very rare, and all i saw was the tail and head moving as if it was alive. It was not of course but i was mortified lol,

I will warn you though. going to Rome for me was like you described going to England, it was sooooo dirty, I've never seen that much trash. I went there about 1 and a half years ago, there were literal mountains of trash next to the big trash bins on the streets everywhere and on all street corners and so much trash in the parks too and the colloseum was just so overcrowded with people and you couldn't even walk around in most parts of it. There were some cool things in Rome, but I have never seen that much trash. Maybe they have it under control now though. I did some googling and found an article about how the trash everywhere in Rome was somehow related to the Mafia, I'm not joking :'D

    • @BremerFischkoop
      @BremerFischkoop 6 років тому +1

Don't visit the trash. Go for circus maximus, caracalla thermen, the original Roman bridge to the river island, the old roman theatre which is coverd with apartment buildings. Oh sorry, I read it as a question ("Can you compare ...")
Actually I'm pretty sure that 90% of the european food has the same roots and just changed regionally depending on what spices, meat, vegetable they had there.
P.S.: veganism ... well ... I wouldn't call it a disease, but I'm pretty sure the amount of vegans 150 years ago was nearly zero - today we have the possibilities to be vegan, but back in the "old days" they wouldn't have survived very long without eating anything that comes from an animal :)

The US, the UK and Germany are all capitalistic countries, but Germany is more regulated.
Certainly the sugar industry knows how to manipulate German politicians as well, it is certainly worse in the US and the UK.
Just have a look in how many foods there is sugar included, even in canned peas and baby food, to get them addicted from early on. Those kids find that natural food is kind of boring. And then the soft drinks, oh dear, oh dear. They will compare any other food with their childhood experience for the rest of their lives.
Why the UK can`t keep their streets clean is beyond me.
After Brexit all this will get worse.

Lux, Brexit is a very complicated matter, 40 years of collaboration come to an end. The UK entered the EU as the sick man of Europe and has become the 5th largest economy on this planet (Oh, evil EU ;-D Brexit simply means a recession will hit the UK, who is suffering under austerity already. Especially the poor will feel the pain. The UK will generate less tax, therefor there will less to be spend.
The UK`s holy cow the NHS is already suffering as it is underfunded. The poorer north will have to take the hardest blow.
All the brexshitters have got are fairytale promises. The country is divided already and it won`t get better, once recession shoes it`s really ugly face.
The EU will suffer as well, but for us it will be a bumper in the road, for the UK it could be a frontal crash into a concrete wall.
Next year we will know more.
Britain has become the laughing stock of the world.

Those nice war movies are needed to forget the reality.
Bentley and Rolly Royce as Mini are german brands, german engineering and same for Austin Martin, cause that was saved by a german CEO and former Porsche/BMW executive and Daimler ...
Operation Sealion - the invasion of britain - seem to be not successfull, but it was far more successfull if you consider what would happen if Churchill would awake and see the british car industry owned and operated by german companies, right.
But germany even conquered the hearts cause the biggest tank festival of the world is held each year in Bovington and that is celebrating the Churchill, Chromwell, Mathilda days or the Tiger Days ?
Of cause the tiger days, the famous german tank, a british museum is using a devils tank to bring masses into the museum.
    Churchill would go crazy.
So, Porsches Tiger tank did not make it to britain except as masterpieces that should be investigated (Churchills wish) ... but Porsche Cars are selling pretty well over the UK.
    So, isn't it ironic ...
in Germany no one would visit a tank festival called Mathilda days or these would be misled visitors expecting a flower called Mathillda ... but Tiger Days stands for a deep desire, a successfull landing in the hearts ... the second after the german tribes Angeln and Saxons conquered Britain hundreds of years ago and brought the language basics to Britain that are now spoken across the world ...
    ship is Schiff ...
    boat is Boot,
    beer is Bier same pronounciation
Always funny to get the invitation for the Tiger Fest ... from Bovington reminding us that the Tiger tanks were a far more successfull ambassador that anyone might have thought, cause Tiger had been developed by Professor Ferry Porsche, the later founder of the Porsche Car maker ... inventor of the VW Käfer ... and Porsche Cars made it to the UK very early after the market introduction.
And the real Blitz, not the war of movement, made it too, but is not called Opel with its Blitz emblem / lightning strike cause these are called in the UK Vauxhall and not Opel, cars made by the Opel brand, a former bike and sewing machine maker before the family sold their company in 1930 to GM ...
Can not wait for the 2021 Tiger day invitation..

Younger Brits tend to like Germans (a lot more than French people that’s for sure). German immigrants in London and elsewhere in England have no problems, they’re welcomed.

So after that video, I suppose you will not visit The UK in the near future? Good, because they will not let you in ;) It is hard to find a country in Europe so clean as Germany. But we germans are a bit ashamed about that. All we have is boring cleaness.

When you talk about the beautiful places in Germany, you only consider cities, that have not been heavily bombarded in the second world war. There are also very ugly cities, which were rebuilt in the 50's and 60's which mostly show a completely different look from those fairytale cities (Bamberg, Schwäbisch Hall, Regensburg, Marburg, ...) you are referring to. There are also cities like Hagen, Kassel (my hometown) or Berlin, which have a rough look, nothing like a fairytale. More industrial, "modern" in the sense of the 60's and plain ugly at some spots. So be careful in over-stylizing Germany ;)

Yes we have the problem in England too. Birmingham/Coventry were bombed by Germans and we have 60's concrete everywhere now that is slowly being replaced.

What do you expect in Londonstan. You never stepped foot in England in the first place.

Oh please, even in ethnically English homogeneous cities and towns you see litter and dirt. We have a lot of problems in England which we need to sort out, we can learn a lot from continental European countries.
