This might be long winded, but bare with me: these videos are SO helpful. We I started my podcast, I used a bunch of your tips. I didn't make a lot of mistakes other people have because of your tips. We're just under 2 years into our podcast and we just hit 100,000 listens yesterday. I do not believe that would've happened without your help. We launched the UA-cam aspect of our show earlier this year. It's slow going but again, many of your tips have yielded results. We'll hit 1000 subs sooner than later and again, it will be because of many of your tips. Live streaming isn't in our plan just yet, but when we brach out, I will be revisiting videos like this to use as my guide. In short: thank you for all the help!
I saw you are knowledgeable on this subject the moment you explained that AUDIO is the most important part of a video. Images touch the brain, but audio touches the heart.
Met you on Kevin BFM Stream this year and became a subscriber to you INSTANTLY :) you are so flippin Good. I am so glad you went full time YT, been learning so much from your experiences that you share, Thank you VERY much for what you do.
Good stuff. One problem I ran into was not retesting my setup after one of the apps I'm using gets an update. There's nothing like speed reading patch notes right before you go live.
SkaterBoi2020 here - that video was FIRE LIT! 🔥 💡 Seriously - good reminders and items to consider for livestream. I really needed to hear the one about purpose - I've leaned into the Q&A in my livestreams, and will work on more topic driven ones in the future. Stream on!
Q&A is great! I love it and there's nothing wrong with it as long as that's what everyone expects going in. If the streams says, "How to Set Up Your Rodecaster" and then spends 45 minutes answering unrelated questions- not so great.
Appreciate these tips! We never thought about putting the camera to the side of our screen before. Agreed on having an outline/purpose to a stream, they keep you on track for sure than without one. You inspired us to think of doing at least one new thing for our next stream. Is your gopro attached to a power source of some sort? I tried using it as another angle but for whatever reason, Streamyard doesn't recognize it as a camera.
Yep, I have the GoPro connected to USB power so it can just run all day. It's running through a capture card and shows up right away- I've never tried connected directly via USB 🤔 I'd be super interested to know your guys' tips on streaming since I think you might have done more streams in total than pretty much anyone I know!
Thanks Tom for another informative video! I really appreciate you sharing mistake #5. As most people have a finite amount of time in a day, especially time to watch UA-cam videos/livestreams, it can be really frustrating when you watch a livestream that is supposed to be in depth on a device or topic, and there actually is only 10 minutes worth of real content surrounded by 50 minutes of banter and fluff. While sometimes the banter can be really enjoyable, speaking for myself with that finite time, it can be hard to justify wanting to sit down for an hour to get a bite sized (email example) piece of information. Super important! Thanks again!!! 👊🏼
Agreed! There's a reason TV shows (and streaming) are 30 minutes or an hour. Movie are longer, and much more of a time commitment, so better be extra special.
It's all about balance. I love watching and doing "banter-based" streams, but as long as that's what the purpose was supposed to be. If something promises to deliver, it better deliver. 😬
Tom have you thought about getting some puns going during your video? boom boom.... You are great. You compile efficacious content and deliver it with absolute love! Thank you. Ned
I don't have that specific video, but Caleb Pike does on DSLR Video Shooter. A lot of it involves positioning your light a bit higher than normal, but he wears glasses and really knows how to handle reflections 👍

You cna totally use a lav for streaming, and it can be a really great option if you move around a lot or don't want a mic cluttering up your shot. 👍 As for the audio levels, I try to output everything at -16, but UA-cam also runs its own processing/EQ.
Great video as usual Tom! Sorry to do this off a video that’s decidedly not about gear, but I’m about to buy a cage for my EOS R and the and one you have on yours looks interesting! What brand is that? 😊
I have the SmallRig cage with the wooden side handle and metal top handle. I have the same one for my Sony and I really like it. Makes it much more secure for mounting peripherals.
Skaterboi2002 enters the chat…Great tips. The one I see a lot is definitely bad audio. These are going to be helpful when I finally start doing live streams again in a few months.
Tom, I know you put a lot of time into your thumbnail designs and I just want you to know that the one for this video is REALLY great. Thumbs up for your hard work and hope your channel continues to grow, wide and deep!
I don't know man, this is like the 3rd or 4th video of yours I watch. I really like how you say things even if I am not particularly interested in the content. You are good at this. I bet you would make a good teacher.
This was Fire lit! loll good advice Tom, I always get nervous during an attempt to go live, I never know the purpose of going live lol so I just stick to doing pre recorded videos, so more live stream tips are definitely helpful! thanks!
First minute into the video, I would say I watch his videos 50% because of his great puns! And 50% because of how amazing and informative he is. No serious, i love this guy’s puns! Hahahaha
Question. I have a C920 i can mount on the wall for the room shot but I also have an adroid Galaxy phone I no longer use. Can I use that on a desk mount for another cam? Do I need a Cam Link for each cam I hook up?
Depending on your software, the webcam should show up as its own source via usb. If you’re using Ecamm Live then you can use something called NDI to bring in your phone as a wireless source.
hi Tom, just wondering if you have any experience with the Rode Wireless Go connected to the Rode VXLR Pro adapter to the Rode Rodecaster Pro if it worked without issues? Been wanting to use that mic for another purpose but seems like most people use other mics but none of the wireless ones. Thanks. 😊
Weird question perhaps, but how did you eliminate the echo from the drum set? Mine causes quite some echo. I already put some wooly blankets inside the biggest drum, but it doesn't eliminate all of it. I was wondering how you solved it.
The short answer is that I didn’t 😬 I think being in a carpeted room filled with a whole bunch of stuff helps, but the drums themselves definitely cause reverb. Pillow in the bass drum did make a difference though 👍
Hey, I've been enjoying your videos a lot since I found you and you explain things in a very nice way! I was wondering if you had some guidelines for stream settings for the rode podmic that uses a scarlet solo (or better yet a video I haven't got to yet), I've watched quite a few videos by now but people make it seem like they just connected the podmic to a mixer (no mention of phantom power etc) and they're speaking super normal and clear, or sometimes it's just vague recommendations that don't go in depth with stream settings or filters etc. Keep up the great videos!
You've pretty much got it all correct! The PodMic is a dynamic mic, so you won't need any sort of Phantom Power (that's usually only needed for condenser mics). The Scarlett is pretty much plug and play, so it'll show up as a selectable audio source as soon as it's connected. After that, you'll just need to experiment a bit to get the levels that you want and then you're all set. If you find that the mic isn't loud enough or there's too much hiss I the signal, you can add a booster like a FetHead or the more affordable Klark Teknik CT-1. Good luck!
@@tombuck thank you! yes there is a little hiss sometimes but its not noticeable with like game audio playing as well, but I think I'll try to get the Fethead when I have a little spending money :) keep up the great content!

do you recommend any virtual mixer to control and edit my microphone. I already have an interface but since im using a condenser microphone, audio is quite flat. I’m very confused on how to route virtual mixers to outputs😅
Ok, I had my Sony a6100 just above one of my monitors but now moved it more at eye level in between my two monitors. Looks better so thanks for the tip. In keeping with your bad jokes I love, does deck size matter🤣. I've seen stream deck mini for a lot more than the steam deck. Why is that?
Now this is my kind of video! Being a streamer I LOVED seeing this...Especially that intro haha! I agree with the audio being first. Many of us listen in on a stream compared to watch due to multitasking so audio is SUPER essential. Lighting is key too with any camera to make things look well. The chat is where it's at! I agree. Last night I got hit with some really bad trolls in my chat but I have an awesome community that helped and mods that got rid of that quick. Fire lit ? Really Tom ? Hahah thank you for this. Very cool video Tom, Thanks to Mr. Covid, I’m running (and participating) to a lot of streams those days and some could really be… an email 😀 so I will surely pass that video on 😉👍
Hey Tom. Great advice again! Do you post process your audio or basically always nail it right during recording? I’m curious as to what’s your audio level range on your camera, like -12 to -6 using the VideoMic NTG? On a separate note, I got the Maono based on your previous video and used GarageBand for the first time to record. I tried to get the audio levels to peak just before the yellow marks on GB. And somehow I still get distortion at times. I did post process though cos felt the audio levels were too Low. Always struggling with the distortion and driving me crazy
If you have time, maybe you could have a quick listen to my video here ua-cam.com/video/m5W9EP5vNAI/v-deo.html and hear the distortion for yourself. And nope I’m not trying to get views or spamming but just so you could give some quick advice if you have the time. If not I fully understand. Thanks! Spencer from Singapore
I usually keep the Sony’s level to 10 and the Video ic around 9. I can always bumps it up or down a bit in Final Cut if needed. Sometimes I’ll use the parametric EQ to get rid of funky frequencies, but I also often end up just making things worse that way. For video and podcasts I try and level everything to -16 on the meters. 👍
@@tombuck thanks Tom! You mean you level it off at -16 for the video? No wonder I have been getting distortion. I thought I should keep it at the -6 to 0 range on the camera or even for the GB levels. Think will do it like what you say and experiment for myself. I really hate the distortion
@@TechnicalRookie to my ears and on my monitors your audio sounds FANTASTIC. It's really easy to listen to and the levels seem perfect. I say keep doing what you're doing 👍

Great vid. I have yet to do any livestreaming... but man _"The Stream That Should’ve Been a Prerecorded Video"_ is so trendy right now! People just don't want to do the editing. 😅
Hey Tom, question: Is it intentional in this video that constantly when you're in frontal view, the camera pans and pans very slowly from left to right, or vice versa, while you're viewing and talking? This irritates very much and partly hurts in the eyes. I have not seen so far in your other videos or is not to be seen. Intentional in this video?
If you're using Ecamm you can share your interview link. If you're using something else like Discord or WhatsApp, you can try to select the application as an audio source in your streaming software.
This man has enough cameras to create bullet time shots, lmao. Loving the dad jokes, Tom!
Haha, I'd love to do bullet time with the hodge podge mix of cameras I have. Certain frames would be 4K and others would be analog 8mm 😅

@@tombuck Thanks! My mods did a great job fixing things and I had slow mode on which helped. Appreciate the reply!
Thanks for the video. I actually thought the clip in the dark kinda looked cool. Ha ha 😂
Haha, me too 🤷🏻♂️
Very cool video Tom, Thanks to Mr. Covid, I’m running (and participating) to a lot of streams those days and some could really be… an email 😀 so I will surely pass that video on 😉👍
Oh boy, and I bet have of those emails could've been a though that someone kept to themselves 😁
@@tombuck hahahaha, very true that
Super helpful, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi @Tom Buck, love this vid! Good info
Hey Caleb! Thank you!
Thanks for the content and encouragement, Tom! I really appreciate it. P.S. The jokes are on point 😂
I'm glad it was encouraging! Liking the jokes is a bonus too 😁
Soooooo Good bro!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥
Thank you sir! 🙏
Great tips! This video was fire lit!
🔥🔥🔥
This video motivated me and I sent you a Tweet! Thanks Agian!
So you know, I connected my Rodecaster pro to my car output and it worked....I need to have a podcast set up in the car to serve as a power bank.
Haha I love that!
LMAO!!! Literally! Your PUNS!
oh please say FIRE Lit ONE more time?
i'll DIE.
love how you give us that dramatic pause after your funny puns.
i hope everyone appreciates them as much as I giggle Every.Single.Time

oh yeah -- one last thought... the pink ... was #Fire #Lit
😜😋😝
Great vid. I have yet to do any livestreaming... but man _"The Stream That Should’ve Been a Prerecorded Video"_ is so trendy right now! People just don't want to do the editing. 😅
Yep, but it's so important! Please don't make me go through a 45 minute stream for the answer to a 3 minute question 😬
5:58 Great advice for getting views on a live stream!
Glad you found it helpful!
Preach it @TomBuck Audio rules!
I thought you'd appreciate that 😁
@@tombuck Your right!
Dude...teacher jokes. I feel your pain.
They keep me going 😬
Perfect video intro!
Yes, we rehearsed it a lot to make it seem real 😉
Tom Buck, you are too funny, great tips and right on point!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate the kind words!
I like the sometimes have the camera in a slider. I’m sorry it hurt your eyes, but I quite enjoy it.
@@tombuck All good. Thanks for the quick reply! I just have to get used to it ;-)
tom can u do a fifine t669 review please?

The second I read the title, I knew that the vegas stream was going to make some sort of appearance
It had to. The world needs to see it, especially now that my head is healed.
I have no interest in doing live streams, I'm just here for the puns 😂 subbed
This video was fire lit!!!

Everyone is talking about the information!, can we appreciate the puns! Such a punny guy, lol
Do you have any idea how to get calls from people is watching?
Call through Whats app , viber and other apps
If you're using Ecamm you can share your interview link. If you're using something else like Discord or WhatsApp, you can try to select the application as an audio source in your streaming software.
ur videos are soooooo good
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that!
I just locked down the domain for Fire Lit
Right? It just might become a thing...

Ironically, with Christmas trees and holiday fires, it's actually sort of related to your channel 😁
sk8erboi???? 😂🤣 jeez I hadn’t heard that phrase in like 15 years 😆

As the kids say.
It would certainly be helpful for doing a Q&A to have a few Q’s! 😉 More peeps equals more opportunities for Q’s.
Q’s are a vital part of the Q&A indeed!
Also if you do something that can be a pre recorded video ask chat hey what do you want me to show about the stream deck
Absolutely great idea! Livestreams can be great ways to figure out upcoming prerecorded videos.
Dad puns were out of control today 🤣
Do you know when a regular pun becomes a dad pun? When it's apparent.
