+Mortiganto I can imagine my 6 year old self constantly being there, and getting myself involved with his projects, while my mother would constantly yell, that I should go away from the crazy neighbor xD
+John Ridley Our house is at a place, where the ground water level is one metre above. So if I dig a hole, I will find ground water pretty fast. Wouldn't be good to build a bunker down there...
***** Nice planning... but that's how people's mind work. We have a basement at least but the side effect is that the ground water cools the house. It never reaches over 22°C (~70°F), even in the hottest summers. In the winter, it cools down as well, so heating up the house is really difficult in cold winters. And yeah, you can't build bunkers in the garden, lol.
awesome project! don't forget some automatic showering systems, overpowered sandwich maker, and a wayy too overpowered airconditioner! you'll also need a good closet of snacks, and some fireworks in case the cat pisses in your favorite corner. good luck! i'll be following along!
I saw the calculations he did on the board, he's definitely an engineer. He does pretty much what an engineer does, the only thing is that he doesn't have official education in engineering, but that does not mean that he didn't read books and learn what he needed to make things that he made.
+The Atheist Hammer He shouldn't forget about drainage, too. Also really good HEPAs (High-efficiency particulate arrestance). You need at least 2 separate air intakes. The bunker should also be covered by at least 1m of compacted soil. That's against the fallout. If you want some blast protection, you should go for at least 10m-12m. That should make you survive a blast from 2miles away. Not the radiation blast, tho. The air intakes need protection against too high pressures and should be able to be cleaned of with water before opening them again. The bunker needs air and water for at least 1 week, better 2. Do not forget about sewage. Also do not forget about water filters. A well might be necessary, too. For excellent protection against radiation, built you bunker very deep into very wet soil, that's also why good drainage is so important. A second escape tunnel is also very important, when the first becomes unusable. Also good tools for forcing the entrance open if necessary. Power tools AND manual tools. A second blast door right before the main-bunker. The first blast door at the top is very likely to break, the second keeps you save. An independent energy source. Diesel generators do a good job. Electricity and oxygen independent light sources. A good source of entertainment, that will work without electricity. HEPA mask. Medicine and First Aid Kit. Especially sealed antibiotics and disinfection tools. Fresh food. The bunker should have a round structure for optimal stability. (search for "bunker 42" for some really good bunker building examples) Communication tools. NBC protection suit with mask. A shower for keeping yourself nice and clean and that way avoiding infections in the first place. Camera on the outside, Geiger counter on the outside. Also a portable Geiger counter, A map, a compass, money and trading goods. Very valuable are also a vacuum flask, portable solar panels, a folding bike, a good backpack, good cloths, sharp and strong knifes, a LOT of ropes, and general tools. Very underestimated is also a neoprene semi-dry suit. Most times a wet suit will do, too. . And always remember everything should be redundant if possible. There should even be a second, very durable structure in your bunker, that you can save yourself to if your bunker is collapsing for some reason. That structure should be directly connected to the escape routes. Like a strong desk you get below during a heavy earthquake.
steini19o4 I was going to build one in my back garden for my children to play in as a den/playroom, and of course in case there happens to be a crisis but by the time I finished with all the necessary storage space as it needs to be comfortable as possible, as you may be down there a long time and mental health is also important, also designed an extendable air lock just in case there is a flood everything was designed Byron be locked off to be air tight, anyway by the time I finished the design it was twice the size of my garden so I redesigned it as two floors, I was then told by the local council I couldn't dig that deep 20ft, I've saved the plans for when I win the lottery or become rich.
I kind of like that idea, I want to dig down like 10 ft then 8ftx20ft hole and then have the shipping container with the hatch under a shed with a ladder.
All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Town Hall for some time, so there's no need to fuss about it now.
+colinfurze Sweet! I've had the urge to build a bumpercar and using the motor and powered wheels out of a golfcart or one of those elderly scooters, to keep it looking as normal as possible. Can't wait to see what you come up with!
+The Indie Station (Psst... **whispers** I'm not actually one of the Mythbusters... Just a fan of the show, which is where I got my nickname I use for everything...)
You don't *really* have to seek planning permission until challenged, in which case you have to take it down. With it being underground you won't have any complaints provided work doesn't take ages, therefore it's pretty flexible. I'm sure the law changes if its a residence or workplace though.
He got retroactive planning permission. So basically, you need planning permission. But he did it without it. Fortunately they gave him permission once it was done.

The only point in planning permission is to avoid people building things which might be ugly and obtrusive. An underground bunker obviously isn't going to affect the neighborhood's view.

Hi Colin, fellow plumber... Here’s the plan, I have a 30’s house.. it has a garage but it’s not big enough so I need to knock it down and build a bigger better one!!! Soooo while I have a digger ... why not dog a hole and put a container in it!!!??? I need advice, if your willing to give it!!! Man cave ahoy!!

Have you been living under a rock???
I think this is going to come in handy given the current situation.
I think your neighbours already hate you from the noise that those pulse jets make... Nuclear bunker building is a whole new level. Good work Colin.
+Mortiganto I can imagine my 6 year old self constantly being there, and getting myself involved with his projects, while my mother would constantly yell, that I should go away from the crazy neighbor xD
+George Cochrane I would love to be his neighbor, being a inventor/maker myself. But the noise would just be terrible- it's a trade off.

Goofy joke but I love this
First time I've ever seen him wearing a helment.
Mario Palencia Gutiérrez first time I saw someone spell it "helment"
speaking from 3 years later I'm pretty sure he's immortal so his only reason for wearing a hemet is comedic effect
Seriously intelligent, knowledgeable, and creative, yet ridiculously happy about anything and everything. Whatever he's taking, I want some.
first helmet I've seen you wear... and it's while making plans. that's some intense planning.

I like how Colin is able to convince companies to pay for his landscaping.

Whoever gets that house after him is going to be lucky af
His house is boring. The shed is what you want.
The shed comes with the house, so I'm gonna stick with my statement
Nah, his death wish to his mechanical son will be to blow up the house with their toy giant robot.
Hopefully he doesn't sell it.

This project aged really well.
here in 'merica we just dig a hole and drop in a 40 ft shipping container. I'm pretty sure most all of us have one. probably.
@Do One it was a very obvious joke also it’s a 5 year old comment
I kind of like that idea, I want to dig down like 10 ft then 8ftx20ft hole and then have the shipping container with the hatch under a shed with a ladder.
Exactly
Ye
why do you alll have one
I live in the uk, just wondering, did you need planning permission for this?
You would at least need to call the UK's version of Miss Utility, so you don't go busting water/gas/electric lines.
No way, it's your own private property. You may want to double check that you don't run into any utility wires/pipes.
Bailey Harrison you still need planning permission if you want to do stuff on your own land like an extension or something
All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Town Hall for some time, so there's no need to fuss about it now.
I think they just check if its his number and automatically say yes in advance.
Your kid will love you for this when they're older.

5 years later Corona virus is here and no one is laughing at Colin's bunker....
haha
Right up until you need to use the toilet then you're fucked.
Bunkers are overrated! In Switzerland everybody has them in their houses. Real bunkers BTW.
I literally came here to write this xD
I have my box, best bunker ever
Your backyard has changed a lot! Good job Colin :).
5 years later you realize you actually need it.
Honestly, he doesn't even need an apocalypse bunker. He's got enough vehicles and weaponry to single handedly make mad Max
Well, now the table has turned you never know
@@KarolWojciechowski18 true

Your smart, high energy and get things done in stead of complaining why not to do something. Like you a lot.
Wait, do you have super relaxed zoning laws where you live, or do you just know some people?
If you change your house you need planning permission but the bunker isn’t attached, counts as a shed probably.
Called planning permission mate
You don't *really* have to seek planning permission until challenged, in which case you have to take it down.

so funny to look back at this and how it all started! I remember seeing it life (on my old channel granted haha)

little did he know at the time it was a little thing and that worse was to come in the months following
That view you used to have from your house was so beautiful. Now it’s all houses.
I wonder what his missus' take on this project was.

"Have fun, darling."
