I've watched a lot of dry bake videos but this one really caught my eye! No fuss baking on the Tran, WOW. Doesn't get better than that! Right color and texture too. You have a real easy WINNER there. Will try it for sure!
Thank you for the kind words. I've used this method several times since I made this video. The only problem with this method is you need to be prepared to share. 8-)
Another use for that little piece of carbon felt in the woods... I've seen someone on UA-cam use a piece about that size under his Trangia when sitting it on a cold surface (snow or ice) to keep it burning faster... not so essential if you take that stand along, obviously, but for those of us that don't have that stand. It would still be available for baking since we don't need the Trangia to put full heat out when baking.
I can't remember which UA-cam video it was but I saw one where they used several small rolled up aluminium foil balls to lift a pan off of the base of the Trangia to bake. It worked equally as well as your carbon felt. It's good to know as it is easier to come by & I often have backpacking food wrapped in it so I can use that 😉👍🍞🔥
Thanks for the video and ideas Hiram, you show there are various ways to dry bake. If you wanted a fresh warm muffin instead of baking a batch of them this is the way to go, great for on the trail to.
Well Jarhead you sure make one heck of a pancake.I just signed up, not to the Corps but to your channel and I am looking forward to more good ideas and videos. That carbon felt idea is a winner and I think it helped in not burning the bottom because it dissipated the heat around the pan and made for more even heating. Keep up the good stuff because I'll be checking you out maggot. Lol Jim ;-JJD
the felt will pack inside of nesting sets better also. dang it after I just got the fan covers all set up :) they were salvage from my pile of spare parts so it wasnt an actual cost to me. great video glad to see you back here somewhere.
That was really good info Hiram, thanks for sharing. That turned out really good looking...OK now I'm hungry....LOL. You can find some really interesting and useful stuff at goodwill. I'll have to keep an eye out for some little tart pans like those, when I go again....LOL. I'll also need to find some of that carbon felt. Take Care :-))
many people misspeak when describing chrome plate. The silver is nickle plate covered with chromium, which is a clear finish. After watching a previous video about carbon felt, I did an Amazon search and found I can buy a piece four times as large as the one you bought at HD, for $18. Thought I would let you know.
The BBQ grills I have and have used have chromium grills. I saw a warning about washing your hands well after handling carbon felt. That makes me think the chromium grill might be safer than the carbon felt.
Some say to use gravel in the bottom for more uniform heating and cooking. Others say to use steel ball bearings. Btw Hiram, you are prohibited from dying for at least the next 50 years! Your devoted fans want you around doing these videos for a loooooonngg time to come! Also, an idea. Take some stainless steel screening/mesh and put it over the flame to act as a mantle/catalizer of sorts. Theory is no soot...
Hey when you say carbon felt, is that like a welding blanket? There's a company called velvet shield that makes a carbon fiber welding blanket. I was just wondering if its the same thing.
You might be able to use a small Silicone Baking Cup directly on the pan and skip the pad. Since they are squishy they will fit anywhere - and they could be used as a pot holder. You can get them at places that sell baking supplies (and probably Wal*Mart - they're not uncommon anymore). They are probably cupcake sized but there could be other sizes too. Since they are food grade silicone you wouldn't have to worry about anything.
i probably missed it, but is this a safe Product? in food? As a chef with 30 years of baking experience i will try my skills to this. and report to you all ;) I will try to do same but exclude carbonfiber. First tip frome chef is Stainless steel is realy bad for cooking. se you soon.

Thanks for posting another great vid, this is the second thing you've taught me about carbon felt. Thanks again

My pleasure. Glad I could help.

I got that at Home Depot in the plumbing department. I did an earlier video on the carbon felt if you need more info.
Thanks and Merry Chrisrmas, --- Clark

Gravel, a ring of sand, or ceramic tiles work great for the bottom of the pan to stabilize the heat.
didnt know that you changed channels. it took 2 weeks to relocate your videos. it is all good
Yes it is the same as the stuff I got at Home Depot, but much, much cheaper.
if you search All Electronics in CA they have alot of goodys like fan guards and fans etc.
I just did this the other day and it turned out well.but i like your carbon felt idea better, where can u get carbon felt ??
Great find!
Yes it is, or at least I hope it is because I've ordered one.
What is it that makes this 'dry' baking? Do you 'wet' bake? Looks like good ol outdoor baking to me.
WHy don't you just place the cake a little off center so the crescent hits the middle of it? Is it so it doesnt burn?
Wow... Outstanding!!
I ordered some chunks of carbon fiber cloth 6 x 12 inches off EBay. They were just odd pieces so they were dirt cheap.
I grew up with lard and im still here

my oven has chrome plated shelves so I doubt very much there is an issue with it
Carbon Felt, can you use it as an insulator to keep things warm or cold?
Jason Miller yes
great job
It looked like you were milking a swollen, distended teat on an old cow when you were pouring the batter into the pan.
That smell good !
u didnt pre-heat?
@MrHiramCook
Thanks!!!
I grew up using lard and im still alive and kicking
