I made mine where my carbon felt was only as high as the wide body of the stove and it bloomed. By having your wick all the way to the top keeps the flame too high and keeps the heat to far away from the main body not allowing the alcohol to heat up and vaporize. Also soaks way to much alcohol lowering the amount of alcohol allowed to seep to outside wall of the stove for vaporizing. Not only does it help simmering control it gives a lot longer burn times. Think someone I talked to said he got like over an hour on 2 oz of fuel. I use it for baking and keeping my coffee pot warm, hate cold coffee, lol. Thanks for your video's, you do a great job.
Spring for the carbon felt. There is so much you can do with it from dry baking to using as pot insulator, even as a wind screen if you're so inclined.8-) Get the bigger welding blanket like in digitizer101's video. It's much, much cheaper than the little pieces I was buying at the big box store. Now I don't mind using it to try out ideas like wawhiker's. Glad I did!
Thanks for all your tests, and having them be scientific. What does it matter if the jets don't bloom as long as you have a usable flame? What don't I know about that? The nice feature of the Trangia is the simmer/extinguisher ring. With cat food cans, it looks like you just have to let them burn out, blowing out seems not to work, at least not safely.
watched hiram's & wawhiker's viedo on the carbon felt. i cut 3 circles the size of the open area. the circles are 1/4 inch thick. so the felt only came up to the support brim / ring. then pour in 45ml of fuel. put the cap on the burner an let it sit 20 hrs. so i got max saturation on the burners wick. got a bloom in 30 secs. when i lit the burner. got a burn time of 15 minutes. the question to be answered is how long does it take for saturation to occur.
Hello Hiram Happy New Year to you in this the roaring 20s again I wanted to ask you I use the toilet roll method but if I was to put some cover trout around the toilet roll would that enable the flame how to last longer
Since the carbon felt is an insulator, it might stand to reason that it might not be suitable in cold weather. Trangia and similar need the heat to vaporize the alcohol. I do wonder where you got that 3 foot piece of carbon felt in your other video. You didn't post the name or link to it.
Hiram, Take another look at Fancy Feast alcohol stove. Try using it with a Sterno Oven. 2 cups of fast boiling water in 5 minutes. Also Turn a New Sterno unopened can into a penny alcohol stove. Just add more alcohol into the top hole, when empty Let me know the results you get. Review some pot supports for Alcohol stoves.
This (Chinese upgrade) kit for Trangia combines carbon fiber, steel wool an steel mesh. ua-cam.com/video/aMZa2UepLMM/v-deo.html With this wick the time to boil increase a minute, but the fuel last almost the double of time.
Just cut your carbon felt width so that it comes about 3/4 inch from the top and you'll be just fine .....I don't make videos ..... I'll let you make the videos

Exactly
Only make the carbon ½ the height of the spirit area and it works great!

Yes your idea of presoaking the tangias on board wicking before inserting the extra carbon felt is a great solution
You put steel wool in the bottom half, this helps the fuel have a space to bloom. The the felt on the top 50%
Thank you for letting me try out your ideas. I'm still planning to try your external fuel port idea. Just have to find the parts.

Maybe you can also try cutting the carbon felt shorter and let it burn inside the trangia core so that it will heat the stove itself.
Sadly the carbonfelt blankets are at a much higher price point wallhiker was able to get it at
Without a camera our surprised reactions arent mistaken as a panic attack… lol
The felt is too tall. It won't let the alcohol evaporate close enough to the bloom holes.
Hiram,
Take another look at Fancy Feast alcohol stove.

This phone has a mind of it's own it's nothing to do with trouts it's to do with mixing toilet roll with carbon felt to prolong the flame of ethanol

It's not an upgrade. It's just interferes with the process.
LOL 8-)
