What is a Physiatrist?
Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to people with physical impairments or disabilities.
What training is required to become a physiatrist?
In the United States, residency training for physical medicine and rehabilitation is four years long, including an intern year of general medical training. There are 83 programs in the United States accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, in 28 states. Specifics of training differs from program to program but all residents must obtain the same fundamental skills. Residents are trained in the inpatient setting to take care of multiple types of rehabilitation including: spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, orthopedic injuries, cancer, cerebral palsy, burn, pediatric rehab, and other disabling injuries. The residents are also trained in the outpatient setting to know how to take care of the chronic conditions patients have following their inpatient stay. During training, residents are instructed on how to properly perform several diagnostic procedures which include electromyography, nerve conduction studies and also procedures such as joint injections and trigger point injections.
Who is Dr. Sheena Bhuva?
Sheena Bhuva, M.D. is a Board Certified Physiatrist who completed her Interventional Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship at Desert Spine and Sports Physicians in Phoenix, Arizona. She earned her Doctorate of Medicine at Texas A & M Health Science Center College of Medicine, Bryan and Dallas, TX in 2013. She completed her Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency, where she was Chief Resident at Baylor University Medical Center, Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation, Dallas, TX.
Her recent Honors include the Arnold P. Gold Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award (1 of 3 PM&R residents who have won this award from 2004-2016), the American Academy of Neurology Medical Student Prize for Excellence in Neurology, and The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago Sarah Baskin Award for Excellence in Research.
She is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Spine Intervention Society, the North American Spine Society, and The Texas Medical Association.
Dr. Bhuva enjoys spending time with her family and friends playing board games and trying new restaurants. She also loves to travel and stay active by playing basketball and hiking. She has a second degree black belt in USA Martial Arts.

Nice video Dr. Bhuva and Dr. Webb. I work with spine specialists and occasionally with spine surgeons. We do a lot of C-ESI, TF-ESI, IL-ESI, and MBBs. In addition to that, we also see patients for IAFs and SI injections. What do you think about RFAs? Most patients we have get benefits from it, typically about 6 months relief., but sometimes longer. However, some of our doctors have strong opinions about RFAs. If possible, would you able to explain why other physiatrist tends to shy away from RFAs?

Can you do this exact profession out of anesthesia? I know they do interventional pain procedures so I assume this is the same.
Hi Dr Webb, I'm nearly done with med school and I'm planning on also doing spine, however many of the surgeons (even the orthopods) I meet on my rotations and scrub in with recommend to go into Neurosurgery over Orthopedic for spine . I'm not sure if they're saying this based on them knowing a bit about me or whether in fact Neurosurgery is a 'better' path to spine. Could you possibly please elaborate a bit on this?
