    Thanks for your take - I read this article the other week! I was really interested in seeing how students can become MUCH more efficient and specific in applying to residency based on scores, honors and pubs. Wish there was a better system in place...Difference between thousands of dollars for med students!!!

    Orthos love me!!!! I’ve had well over 50 plus knee surgeries. I’m 45 and have had both knees replaced. Sports kills your body but ortho has always been fascinating for me.

    I'm interested to see the whether there was a correlation between matching into ortho and non-academic attributes, such as physical appearance (height, build/physique, former college athlete/military) and social media presence (Instagram, UA-cam).

Ortho surgery is one of my options for surgery. the usa process is very different from brazil and it scares me a little. what advice would you give to an international student (who is in the second year - equivalent to the end of the second year of you guys from med school- and intends to do step 1 in 2021? here are 6 years of medicine, 2 of basic materials, 2 of medical and practical materials 2. I intend to do step 1 at the beginning of the 3rd year.)

  • @margodphd

    The US system seems over-complicated, yet sensible at the same time, seemingly lowering chances of any nepotism and favourism, besides of course the constant financial bias. It's even more complicated in Poland,and don't even get me started on attempting to transfer..
    But damn, I thought it would be enough to do one handed push ups and bring the senior a gift-wrapped super fancy kettlebells to ace an interview? 😂 Or at most, demonstrate my proficiency with various saws and hammers, ability to hold a leg for 8 hours and enough strength to set a joint 😶😊
    (Or,as it is what many ortho bro's do out of kindness in my primary training hospital - lusted after by a large amount of female staff for their combination of muscle,brain and compassion - ability to gently transfer even the most frail - or heavy - patients. )
    One of the orthopedic surgeons made me believe in love at first sight long before I decided to change careers and pursue medicine when, while finishing writing consult notes in the ER for my shattered foot, he ran out to effortlessly pick up an elderly lady who has fallen in the corridor and despite her confusing him with her son and soiling herself, he treated her with not only dignity (which unfortunately is a rare case for Polish ER'S especially for older patients and those that display psychiatric or neurological symptoms 😞) but also immense empathy and kindness, going out of his way to provide her with a safe and private place to lie down (there was barely any sitting room..) and female nurse's assistance with cleaning up and change of clothes (without yelling trough entire corridor,like other doctors did and still do ...) - it wasn't his patient,or anyone's patient yet. He helped my mother with getting treatment after,in the same hospital, a too tight cast damaged her nerves, admitting that his senior colleague made a mistake.
    If only he didn't have a wife 😂 I wonder how often do female patients hit on their doctors!
    I'm glad there's more and more importance placed upon patient communication,ethics and more training regarding patient comfort and dignity.
    Thanks for the insight and advice, Doc! We appreciate it 🙏

      ParsleY it’s likely that he enjoys it and likes it, what’s wrong with him getting into it if he’s in it for the compensation? Dr. Webb is clearly competent, good surgeon, and worked his ass off to get there

    • @rhui6631
      @rhui6631 4 роки тому

      ParsleY the interviewers know that the lifestyle and pay for ortho. It's a competitive field for more reasons than that but ignoring those two things is setting you up to come across as disingenuous. I think his transparency about that stuff is very reassuring, because while salary and lifestyle aren't the main things I'm looking for in a specialty they are there and when I think about it, it does add.
      Also prestige is a big part of specialty selection for some people. I respect that.
