The dichotomy between Stephen and Chino fascinates me so much. It's amazing how despite their differences in taste, writing habits, collaborative approaches how they're generally always butting heads, this band remains one of the most impactful, influential, innovative, relevant bands today and they've been working together since the 80s.
no fight no battle = no epic band :)
It's not despite of those factors, it's because of those factors.
Deftones definitely one of the best music in era of crap
I mean, this era was one of their final tests to see if they'd stay for a way longer time. They weren't happy, fighting, email parts, changing producer, personal life shit, etc. SNW was the result of all that. They literally almost broke up and had to sit down and decide if they were gonna continue or not. Thank god they did.
Their final test, imo was Chi's accident. We're they gonna give up? When he passed, was THAT the end? It's tough. They kept saying they couldn't wait for him to hopefully play again one day.... He was getting better then... Gone. One of the saddest days of my life and I didn't even know him personally. One love, Chi. RIP.
For all of the people saying that Steph sucks, or is a noise maker, he is actually EXTREMELY underrated. Literally one of the most creative guitarists ever, and he doesn't play over the top "face melting" solos, or lead licks. Just because he's not the most technically skilled player, doesn't make him good. He definitely has an ear for dissonance. Not only that, Him and Deftones are total pioneers in the Alternative Metal genre. I have no doubt in my mind that without them, a lot of bands wouldn't even exist. They are very influential to many of the worlds greatest Rock bands and musicians.
He is a humble genius!!! I remember in Barcelona during the White Pony he did a very sort solo stage appearance before an encore, I mean no shredding solo type, it started dynamically soft beautiful, weird arpeggios in a non repetitive phrase increasing the gain by just picking, he was improvising and flowing, probably something of his own he just developed on stage. Jaw dropping, full of GRACE. Unheard.
And the craziest is Deftones Is a heavily guitar driven band. No doubt underrated. Heavily creative. A definite pioneer.
Agree
Deftones is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE BAND but! Steph is good and writes Great Riffs but player wise? I dunno. Tosin?
The grooves he has written over the years are amazing. It is funny to hear him talk about guitar sometimes because he's just kind of like "I don't know what it is I just like the way it sounds" but who cares... it's awesome!
Stefs riffs are Eerie yet beautiful
Yes they are they remind me of sexy female vampires dancing in a cage... lol but that's just me...
dafuk dude hahahaha
Sour Diesel Smells Like Urine They do now that I think about it!
Yosemite Sam "Shove It" and Kate Beckinsale coming down from the ceiling...
= Deftones
(And yes, I did just make a reference to the T-Pain song)"I'm in Love With a Stripper" Let's call it the Sexy Vampire remix.. lol
It's beautiful because it's wierd.
This guy makes SIMPLICITY sound OUTSTANDING!!... now i love technical metal, deathcore, Djent metal, metalcore, all sub generes for metal and hard rock..... but its not always about fast playing... its also ABOUT THE FEEL!!!
No one can know how much this 3 minute 34 second video is so compelling and deeply satisfying in the hugest kind of way for me...Like some people geek out on like Starwars or Harry Potter. It's always been Deftones for me. It's actually a lonely existence. There aren't Deftones heads on every street and shit, and if there were there's no big way to be able to tell they're into that.
Jesse Allan Friend Guitar LOL nice, this is nice
true, my circle of friends never listen to Deftones, I hardly find Deftones fans in my town
I do relate to this
LOL fuckin nice
I relate so much to this comment
i think stephen came up with a good starting point, and chino added some strong creative changes to the sound that made it better. the combination of their contributions made for the best song.
I love Stef in Deftones, but I don't know if I'd want to listen to him do a solo or side project. I think everyone in that band needs each other, and that's what makes them so special.
Song writing at is best here,no flashy riffs not too many solos, just a good composition,Steph and Deftones the best!
love the riff Steph but those little additions Chino made made that riff even doper
Well that's what make Deftones good, trying to reconcile their differences is what creates and delivers their awesome sound.
I used to hate the Deftones back when I was younger, more immature, and into all things technical. Luckily, I grew up and learned to appreciate good songwriting over ridiculous solo's. Anybody can construct a very technically proficient song. However, it takes someone with true songwriting talent to write a memorable song. That is what Carpenter excels at and that is why I appreciate the man. He can shred, he just doesn't care too.
The way Steph tells a story makes it funny even if its not really funny.
That riff is sick...
Love this song and the entire SNW album. A lot of people don't like it but I absolutely love it.
The Deftones have truly changed my life. The music is so beautiful and intricate. Every song is like taking a Bath is sound
You mean taking a Digital Bath in sound
I prefer Stef's version. So much unused material from that album. The Bob Erzin demos luckily leaked ages ago. Finger of Death is one I wish would've made it. Stef's riff is fucking KILLER! Makes me wanna punch a baby and throw it at a grandma to make her trip!
hahah funny Stephen as always... love how natural his description of the relationship is
Beautiful band and music!!
Who else just started singing
"I've looked...outside(side,side) but I...never wandered out...
He is such a huge inspiration to me even though they're not my favorite band in part of his being humble is the reason he's such a huge inspiration to me
2:30 kind of sounds like "Bloody Cape" on self-titled.
Is this "Mein"? Must be, sounds familiar
+Eric Loranger It is.
Eric Loranger it is
Yea
It is Sir
i could listen to this all day..
Deftones = Stephtones + Chinotes
RIP CHI...
Drake Davis lol xd 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Drake Davis chinotes! Hahahah
Don't diss Abe!
I am going with Chino on this one. What great riffs though as always, man I love the tones!
such a wholesome guy and a creative guitar player
steph is always so stoned in his interviews i love it.
steph's always so chill in interviews lol
Stephen and Chino ---Magic-when it's all said and done!
You my friend know what the definition of good music, its all in the sound. It's not about how easy or hard it is too play, its all about making something that people enjoy.
His guitar and technique remind me of Syd Barrett. Like a painter creating vivid surreal landscapes over a distorted canvas.
This made me happy 🔥
MEIN🔥I wonder if this is all the conflict I heard about during the recording of SNW?? Either way, I gotta say it came out sooo fkn good one it’s of my favorite albums ever
Some of the best bands base there whole sound using simple chords just look at Nirvana or The Ramones. being able to strip the music down and not overcomplicating parts gives more room for it to breath which is such an important element to the Deftones sound and a lot of other bands out there
Well there is no "best" because you cannot accurately "score" anything that is purely based off of opinions. With that being said artists that write songs that are poppy and have a groove to them are always simplistic. Many would argue with you about Tool or Rush because of the thought and time devoted to the songs and how complex they are. They are, generally they are not "poppy" which is what lots of people end up defining as "good" because it's pleasant to listen to, move to, and sing along to.
Amen to what you said bro. His music touches the soul and that's the whole point.
He is one of my most favorite guitar players.
One day Stephen will be shredding on an album...one day lol
That's what Adrenaline is. Thrash meets hip-hop.
@@reevesreeves6862 that’s just what nu metal is
Steph does explore his music abilities, he has changed the tuning along with different guitars over the past 20 years. Always trying something different for each album and has accomplished a lot so it doesn't matter what is said about the guy. Plain simple fact, he is great guitarist and song writer and has proved it through the years.
I remember the first time my friend said the word deftones I couldn’t get the word out of my head we where just casually talking about music and I asked what he was listening to and he said “ deftones dude you gotta listen to deftones.” It’s weird because I was only 14 at the time and just listening to pop punk and some metal this shit changed so much for me as far as music goes. Love this band love this guitarist such good music!
Amazing Writer, I love this Guitar Player one of the most talented players out there he creates a sound not copies
It's a good thing there are drums & bass to come in and settle the vocals vs guitar disputes with some gluey-tones
Beautiful
i love this man
HBD MR STEPH !!!MORE STRINGS, MORE DEFTONES, MORE YEARS, MORE WEED
@1:25 I feel like maybe the reason why Chino chops up the takes is because he thinks like a beatmaker. being that he grew up on hip-hop it makes sense since rappers are always tweaking instrumental arrangements to fit a specific take that they probably have in their mind
Underrated comment. Said it all
this is hilarious how much they back and forth yet still make killer songs
This man is one of the rhythm gods
that constant battling between steph and chino would create alot of tension in other bands that would probably lead to breaking up .
Brother fights. Love the both of them.
the guy's all about having fun =) and i love it
It had a Blackgaze feels to it
Haha, love Stephen. He's a heck of a character. I would love to smoke a bowl with this dude.
@TheCold16 depends what kinda guitar ya play on. If it's 6 string, tune A half a step down and drop the D string to get the closest result, on a 7 string (on which Stephen plays it) G#,C#,F#,B,E,G#,C#.... Aaight? Good luck with it. Most things that SC plays is in sharp.
Music isn't a competition. Stef is amazing songwriter. He admits it himself that he is not a shredder but he is a one hell of a composer.
Cmon people. This is why guitar and metal is awesome! You can have insanely technical stuff from bands like Obscura, then groove along to shit like Deftones. They way he plays fits his BAND perfectly! So what if he doesn't shred or can do insane sweeps everywhere? He compliments his band as an entire unit perfectly.
MEIN! Glad I got hear it back in 2006 :)
no need to argue on that,it is hard work to write a good song, but at the end it is worth it,good song becomes something that never can be forgotten.
You have to play guitar before you can comment on his work. If you never learned any of his songs or don't know how to play guitar in general, you can't appreciate the work. Needles and Pins all day :) one of my favorite riffs, go Steph!
LOVE
Some say to this day, Steph is still learning those licks.
Mein, off of Saturday Night Wrist. Amazing song of an amazing album.
the coolest guy
Not sure how anyone can listen to their latest album and call that luck. It is a masterpiece. Pure and simple, talent.
I fucking love His seven string Tele. But even though Steph and Chino fight alot during production. They always stick together at the end of the day. Which is really cool..
I do not know what this is a reply too, but I will agree with that statement 100%
mein it is peeps, "I've looked... outside, but I..." you know the rest
@Bludhoundz8 it's not meant to be showy. the guitar for deftones just creates a texture. which is good sometimes.
It's funny....if I just looked at Stephen, I would (unfairly) conclude he wouldn't write music I'd be into listening to. When it comes to the guitar, I prefer stuff like My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground...really psychedelic shoe-gaze sounding drones and riffs. _But_....I fucking love Deftones...and Stephen's playing. He's a metal guy at heart...but his songwriting has MUCH more of an idiosyncratic pathos edge to it than your standard "nu-metal" band. Deftones are one of the few bands who are still making truly creative music within the "hard rock" genre.
dude! my bloody valentine are fucking awesome!
haha love this
Oh yeah
I love you
Saturday night wrist nearly broke up deftones they couldn't stand eachother
❤
The extra chord at the end of that riff would have clashed with the last note of chinos vocal line...which is way cooler than that last chord.. end of
He said that he likes how it is now, but originally it was the simpler version of the riff that he plays later.
He's a cool dude!
You guys can argue all you want. The fact that he's making a living out of his guitar playing and you're not is testament enough to his songwriting skills. If it's so easy/simple, let's see YOU do it.
Would love to jam with this guy.
Mmmmmm Mein is one of my absolute favourites.
fuck yeah!!! i second this motion
He's playin mein... Classic tones riff, I have to admit I like what chino changed lol
i always liked the deftones BECAUSE of their simplicity....and im pretty sure they could do hard stuff if they wanted to,but thats what i love about them, theyre not changing....unlike slipknot who started playing crazy solos and crazy fast shit....i liked slipknot more when they played simple stuff, like the first 2 albums
Song :" Mein "
fucking awesome ! he is my new riff god
I really hope he one day switches to 9 stringed guitars. Fuuuuck I can only imagine the riffs he comes up with.
Are there any more videos of Stephens?
featuring guest vocalist Serj Tankian from System Of A Down, might I add! : D
OMG MEIN ITS MEIN love the sound the riff song is so underated
Unless I'm crazy, the entire song is one guitar. Chino plays on certain tracks but every Mein tab I've seen only shows the one part. Might be Frank in the background, not 100% sure.
Talent is natural ability. Anyone can reach the same status with the correct work ethic.
Thardus616, well obviously there is a heavy distortion pedal in use
i fucking agree!
What song is that? Im just getting into them. Love that opening chord progression.
Mein
What song is he playing in the beggining? its so sick, but beautiful
Master song writer nuff said
yes they do.
MEIN THE BEST RIFFS POWER FULL
Wait a minute......that's Mein from Saturday Night Wrist!
Part 2 were is it?
You can still learn alot by listen to music thats hard to play. as a musician ive learned a huge amount by listen to technical songs. but i like how you think! Music should be enjoyed first and foremost.
Fuckkk the original version was PERFECT
the song is Mein off of Saturday Night Wrist, hope that helps!
You can't say They are lucky, they're really talented and work so hard to get what they have and not enough what they deserve there are shitty bands out there that have more recognition than them...maybe Steph isn't the fastest guitarrist but He can do the most originals riffs ever
Their songwriting is what sets them apart form most other bands, that is why they are successful.
