Since forming Deftones in late '80s Sacramento, Stephen Carpenter has traveled the world over, slinging churning riffs and atmospheric textures with the help of a slew of extended-range guitars and evolving amp rigs. We got the chance to hang out with Steph in a southern California studio to talk Deftones, gear simplicity and his love for heavy music.

I love deftones. Stephen isn't the best guitar player ever, but he writes extremely efficient music that has stuck with me for most of my entire life.
Steph is signature though, not just another guitar player that ya cant tell apart from others.......when ya here his riffs, ya know its his.
your comment makes me so mad. its BECAUSE he writes music that has stuck with you for most of your life the makes him one of the best guitar players. not everything has to be a calculus problem. you SHOULD see him as one of the greats, because he is one of the greats.

Man I love this guy. He recently sent me his latest pick or whoever runs his facebook (which has hash oil (dabs) on the front and his signature on the back.) I have been trying to meet these guys since I was 15 and smoke a blunt with them. The one night I was supposed to meet Steph in Seattle, it fucking rained during the whole show and I made my ex girlfriend wait out back of the venue with me and They took off before I could meet them. I just want to smoke and bullshit about guitar tone with Steph.

He very well may know and just choose not to use them still. The man is an enigma and his gear lineup is as ever shifting as the desert sands.
