Raymond Shulman (8 December 1949 - 30 March 2023) was a Scottish musician, and the youngest of three brothers in progressive rock band Gentle Giant.[Shulman was born in Portsmouth. His father was a trumpet player in a jazz band, and that was the first instrument he learned to play. He went on to learn violin and guitar and was primed for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, but his brother Derek convinced him to join his band Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, which later evolved into Gentle Giant.
During Shulman's recording days in the band as a bass guitarist, his virtuosity often compared to popular players such as Yes's Chris Squire.[citation needed] Shulman was quite adept at other instruments as well, sometimes doubling on violin, recorder, trumpet, acoustic and electric guitars. Shulman and keyboardist-bandmate Kerry Minnear composed or co-wrote much of the music for Gentle Giant.
Shulman was in Gentle Giant from the beginning in 1970 to the last tour in 1980. He went on to become a record producer in the late 1980s and 1990s, working with the Sugarcubes, the Sundays, the Trash Can Sinatras, and Ian McCulloch, The Defects among others. He also created music for several video games, such as Privateer 2: The Darkening and Azrael's Tear and released two trance-EPs under pseudonym Head-Doctor.
Shulman passed away in London after battling a long illness, on March 30 2023. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Tanner, and his two elder brothers Derek and Phil Shulman. His passing was announced via Gentle Giant's social media on 1 April 2023.[2]

One of the most amazing bassist I've ever seen and heard in my life. We will truly miss you here on Earth!!! RIP Ray.
Truly sad day. An amazing musician. Thank you for so many astounding songs
Ray was an epic musician/composer. One of the most innovative bassist I have ever heard. A genius in his own right. I am so grateful to have listened to this stellar band of the 1970s during my college and post college years. They are my favorite band. PERIOD!
Possibly the most underappreciated band in history. Ray was immensely talented and fun to watch perform. He will be sorely missed.
Didn't know Ray was a fisherman.
😂
Really sad. But the musician at 0:24 is Gary Green. Not Ray.
And the AI voice keeps saying "bass" like a fish, instead of "bass" like a guitar...
RIP Ray 😢 Thanks for all the music
Wrong dates, age, and number of studio releases. Sad loss, but false info is just unnerving.
And even a wrong picture.
I have a feeling this was made by ai, which is a bit creepy. The thumbnail has the circle around his throat, and there is another video with a similar title with an arrow pointing to his throat, for some reason. Seems like ai incorrectly made these videos
And a computer generated voice.
Still trying to figure out which bass he played...small mouth or large mouth. The CG voice never said. Still amazed that a fish could be utilized as a musical instrument.
This tribute would have been more sincere and meaningful if they hadn't used a stupid insulting robot voice. And the get out clause at the end renders it pointless.
His technique was absolutely incredible, but what amazed me the most was his feeling playing bass.
Great guy and amazing player.
RIP Ray. Loved every minute. Great Memories of Old Days!
😓😓😓😓
RIP Ray... Great musician !!! Thanks for all your magic!!!
Dear Ray….rest in peace. Next time “you” pass Ray’s place of rest. Please lay down a flower from me.
According to his brother Derek, Ray died on March 30th at age 73. (Why do even have the existence of such dumb shyte 'reporting' as this mindless robo-report?)
Ray was great, amazingly talented musician and composer. He and Gentle Giant deserved so much more success than they had!
I appreciate the announcement of this musical great's passing but mister robot the word is bass (rhymes with BASE) and NOT bass as in Ass. Ray Shulman did not make music playing a fish.
Pretty sure the voice in text to speech. Not an actual human.
A part of my youth is dead ,Ray ,but you're still living in my heart, in my brain, in my ears ,and I'll always keep the memories of old days in my soul....good by Ray, see you later in paradise of musicians
Riposa in pace Ray! Sei stato un grande musicista!
R I P , DUDE , LEGEND
Bem que o tempo não poderia passar para certos mestres...
i didn't know Ray played a fish with Gentle Giant. sorry to see him go.
I thought he played trout.
The first picture is incorrect, that´s Gary Green the main guitar player from the band, anyways... all FANS knows that ;) I appreciate this video, we all have Ray shulman and His family in our hearts. RIP to one of the giants from Prog music!
Riposa in pace grande uomo
Still a giant .
Very sad, what a band Gentle Giant were, so under appreciated :(
RIP RAY.... GG woke my musical interests...! And these guy's had something in the water because the talent of their collective contributions as brothers is incredible.
Boy, you guys didn´t do your homework properly. You say that Ray died and put of picture of Gary. Then you mention he formed GG with his brother Phil and don´t mention the lead singer of the band, Derek.
Unique , to say the least.Fantastic musician.
very sad...☹
Shows a picture of Gary Green...🙄
Kind of an ironic affront to have an AI voice doing the narration. It hasn't quite grasped the nuance of human language...as spoken, Ray was not a "bass player" (short A), but a "base player" (long A). Same with "bassist" and "baseist". If you Artificial Intelligence bots plan on taking over you have to get little things like this correctly.
Or, what am l talking about? I just came from a job interview and the interviewer couldn't spell 'adaptable'. Maybe AI should take over.
This is not the last Ray video. This video of him is super old.
Baruch Dayan Emes
How’s he doing?
Bassist? Like the fish?
Eeek. Artificial narrator. Ughh
He played a fish called a "bass".
He knew all the scales!
Get rid of the computer generated voice. Hire a real person.
